R. Augusta "Peg" Pyles
Slate, WV
R. Augusta “Peg” Pyles, 88, of Slate, W.Va.,
passed away Nov. 23, 2007, at St. Joseph’s
Hospital.
She was born Jan. 17, 1919, in Wirt County, a
daughter of the late James M. Lyons and Mary
Belle Allman Lyons Wine.
Peg was a member of the Big Tygart United
Methodist Church and a charter member of the
United Methodist Women of the church. She
taught Sunday school class for the junior and
youth classes and had worked in Bible School
for many years. In the last few years, she had
been attending the Elizabeth Baptist Church.
She was a homemaker and mother of Carolyn King
and her husband, Earl, of Slate; grandmother
of Angela and Brad McCue of Elizabeth and
Vicki and Pat Burrows of Huntington; and great-
grandmother of Brittany McCue of Dumfries,
Va., Daniel McCue, Seth Burrows and Grant
Burrows.
Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Edna
Pyles and Beatrice Melrose, and several nieces
and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 49
years, Floyd D. Pyles on April 20, 1988; two
sisters, Goldie Leach and Viola Deem; four
brothers, the Rev. James Lyons, Okey Lyons,
F.T. “Ted” Lyons and Walter “Bud” Lyons; a
stepsister, Nellie Denniewitz; three
stepbrothers; and her stepfather, Charley M.
Wine.
The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at
the Big Tygart United Methodist Church. The
Reverends Mark McCloy and Jeff Mayfield will
officiate. Burial will follow at Merrills
Chapel Cemetery on Route 14. The visitation
will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today at Kimes
Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service
Monday at the church.
Barbara C Hewitt Rogers
Williamstown, WV
Barbara C. Hewitt Rogers, 74, of Williamstown
passed away Nov. 15, 2007, at her home.
She was born Sept. 16, 1933, at Williamson,
W.Va., a daughter of the late Clifford E. and
Hilda G. Mead Hewitt. Barbara was a 1951
graduate of Parkersburg High School. She
retired from Bell Atlantic with more than 41
years of service; was an active member of the
Telephone Pioneers and the Red Hat Society of
Parkersburg; and was a long time member of the
First Lutheran Church.
Surviving is her daughter, Judith Ann Bonnell
of Licking Creek, Mo.; a brother, Henry M.
Hewitt and his wife, Agnes, of Parkersburg; a
sister, Patsy J. Boso of Williamstown; five
grandchildren, Edward P. Bonnell, Jessica
Thomas, Victoria Bonnell, Kelly Bonnell and
Grace Bonnell; a great-grandson, Heyden
Thomas; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded
in death by her husband, Edward R. Rogers.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the
First Lutheran Church, with the Rev. James
Kinsler officiating. Burial will follow at Mt.
Olivet Cemetery. There will be visitation from
2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at Kimes Funeral Home,
521 Fifth St., Parkersburg. There will be no
visitation on Monday.
Barbara Mae Reeder
Parkersburg, WV
Barbara Mae Reeder, 74, of Parkersburg passed
away Nov. 5, 2007, at the Willows Nursing
Home, where she has been a resident the past
four years.
She was born June 11, 1933, in Parkersburg, a
daughter of the late Ernest and Ollie Mae
Hicks Flinn. Barbara was of the Protestant
faith and had at one time worked at A&W
Rootbeer Drive In.
Surviving are three sons, David L. Reeder of
Elizabeth, Harry A. (JR) Reeder Jr. of Boaz
and Mike Reeder of Parkersburg; one stepson,
William G. Reeder; two stepdaughters, Rochella
Batten and Donna Walters, all of Parkersburg;
six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded
in death by her husband, Harry A. Reeder Sr.
in 1953.
The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday
at Kimes Funeral Home, 521 Fifth St.,
Parkersburg, with Pastor Brian Harrell
officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen
South Cemetery. The visitation will be from 2-
4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Harry C. Hartleben Jr.
Parkersburg, WV
Harry C. Hartleben Jr., 85, of Parkersburg
went home to be with his Lord on Nov. 3, 2007,
from Worthington Manor Nursing Home, where he
had been a resident for the past four years.
He was born Feb. 15, 1922, in Parkersburg, a
son of the late Harry Clyde and Arena Riddle
Hartleben.
Harry was a 1940 graduate of Parkersburg High
School. He served as a staff sergeant in the
Army Air Corps during World War II and the
Korean War. After his discharge, he returned
to Parkersburg and studied accounting at
Mountain State College. Harry retired in 1983
from Dravo Corporation in Marietta as a
contract administrator.
He was a lifelong Christian and member of the
First Christian Church of Parkersburg, where
he had served as a deacon and sang in the
choir. He had also served as troop leader for
the Boy Scout Troop No. 10.
Harry was a devoted husband, father and
grandfather, and he enjoyed Big Red and
Mountaineer football games. All who knew him
will miss his warm smile and sense of humor.
Surviving is his wife, Mary Louise Turner Sims
Hartleben; his grandson, Andrew P. Hartleben
of Parkersburg; and his granddaughter, Kerri
Hartleben Holcomb and her husband, Joshua
Holcomb, of Jane Lew, W.Va.; three
stepdaughters, Becky Dodd of Parkersburg,
Susan (Steve) Ball of Morgantown, W.Va., and
Judy (Don) Faulkner of Vienna; one stepson,
Greg (Pamela) Sims of Vienna; two sisters,
Mary Belle O’Brien and Ruth Ann (Seldon)
Wigal, all of Parkersburg. Also surviving are
several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in
death by his first wife of 49 years, Sara
Braswell Hartleben; his son, Harry Clyde
Hartleben III; and two sisters, Betty Kirk and
Grace Enoch.
The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday
at Kimes Funeral Home, 521 Fifth St.,
Parkersburg, with the Rev. Sanford Downs and
Father David Huffman officiating. Burial will
follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery with military
rites conducted by the American Legion Post
15. The visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8
p.m. Tuesday.
