Bill Kiger
Parkersburg, Wv
Bill Kiger was a kind and compassionate man
with an absolute and total love of life. He
cherished his friends and loved ones and above
all else, valued his privacy and desired a
calm and peaceful existence in his personal
life.
His public life, which consumed most of his
time, was devoted to his many clients and
played out in the arenas of the Magistrate and
Circuit Courts in Wood County and many
surrounding counties. He was admired and
respected not only by his family and friends
but by his clients as well as colleagues,
legal adversaries and judiciary in the
professional world. He was a brilliant mind,
exhaustively studying and interpreting the law
in order to ferret out the smallest detail
that might benefit his clients. Meticulous and
thorough in his work, he was sincere, honest
and compassionate and believed everyone
deserved his best efforts.
The deeply rooted love he had for his
children, John, Zak, Tim and Ashley, was the
driving force behind his zealous work ethic.
He aspired to show them by example the
benefits of dedication to principle and the
value of respect, honor and integrity in all
aspects of life.
His personal and quiet time was devoted to his
wife, best friend and constant companion,
Denny M. (Smith) Kiger. Together they strove
to create a haven of solitude and comfort away
from the chaos that was their professional and
public life. In a life full of complexities;
his personal mantra was simplicity in all
things.
Although a man of few hobbies, he had a zest
for those he did enjoy. His trademark smile
and laughter were never more evident than when
he was swapping stories with his friends,
enjoying a cold one by the side of the pool on
a sunny afternoon or boating with friends and
family on the river. He and his wife enjoyed
their many trips to Las Vegas as well as
family vacations on the beaches of Pawley’s
Island, S.C. He was an avid reader and student
of American History and could answer any
question regarding the development of our
Country and its wars and conflicts.
He was born in Parkersburg on Jan. 25, 1951,
to the late John Wesley Kiger Sr. and Audra
Pearl (Parsons) Kiger. He is survived by his
wife of 17 years, Denny M. (Smith) Kiger; his
mother, Audra P. Kiger; sons, John Paul Kiger
(and companion, Belinda Knight), Zachary Allen
Kiger, Timothy Ray Kiger and wife, Sarah; and
daughter, Ashley Elizabeth Way. His beloved in-
laws, Everett L. and Betty M. Smith, also
survive him.
In his immediate family he is also survived by
his brother, John W. Kiger Jr. and wife,
Barbara; sister, Anna J. (Kiger) Benzenhafer
and husband, Earl; and sister, Linda K. Kiger.
He leaves two grandchildren, Lindsey M. Kiger
and Emma Leanne Kiger; and eight nieces and
nephews.
He graduated from Parkersburg High School in
1968, West Virginia University in 1973, and
received his Juris Doctor from the West
Virginia College of Law in 1975. He was
admitted to the West Virginia State Bar in
1975; was a member of the Wood County Bar
Association, the West Virginia Bar
Association; the National Trial Lawyers
Association; and was licensed to practice in
the United States District Court for the
Southern District of West Virginia.
He spent his last months at home and enjoyed a
beautiful Saturday afternoon with two of his
dedicated sons in attendance before leaving
this world in the early morning of Sunday,
July 15, 2007, with his devoted wife and
partner and their loving daughter by his side.
Throughout his lengthy illness, he was the
epitome of grace and strength and regardless
of the daily struggle, maintained his sense of
compassion and concern for others. He will
forever be remembered for his genuine
acceptance of and appreciation for the beliefs
and rights of every individual.
