Marcella Jean Pierce Middleton
Parkersburg, WV
Marcella Jean Pierce Middleton, 72, of Market
Street, Parkersburg, passed away Aug. 9, 2008,
at her residence following an extended illness.
She was born July 4, 1936, in Parkersburg, a
daughter of the late Joseph Austin Pierce and
Mabel Irene Springston Pierce. Jean had
formerly attended the First Lutheran Church,
was a graduate of Parkersburg High School and
attended Mountain State College.
She was an instructor of Travel and Tourism.
She and her sister were co-owners and
operators of the Historic Virginia Apartments
on Market Street for many years. She loved to
travel and enjoyed crossword and jigsaw
puzzles.
Surviving are two sons, Joel A. Middleton of
Ravenswood and Jason A. Middleton of Belpre;
two daughters, Jael A. Fulton (Kenneth II) of
Parkersburg and Joy A. Cundiff (Mike) of
Vienna; six grandchildren, Jessica Waggoner,
Kenneth Fulton III, James Aaron Middleton,
Alison Cundiff, Bailey Cundiff and Brendan
Cundiff; three brothers, Austin E. "Bud"
Pierce of Virginia and Larry L. Pierce and
David R. "Rick" Pierce, both of Parkersburg;
her sister, A. Irene Walters of Parkersburg;
and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded
in death by a brother, Paul H. Pierce, and an
infant brother.
The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at
Kimes Funeral Home, 521 Fifth St.,
Parkersburg, with Pastor Don Yeager
officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset
Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 2-4
and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Sara Lou "Gum" Cumpston
Parkersburg, WV
Sara Lou "Gum" Cumpston, 67, of Parkersburg
passed away Monday, Aug. 4, 2008, at her home
following an extended illness.
She was born Aug. 28, 1940, at Salem, W.Va., a
daughter of the late James Blair and Zelma
Verde Davis Gum. Sara was of the Baptist
faith, was a graduate of Parkersburg High
School and worked at G.E. Plastics with nearly
20 years of service.
Surviving is her husband, Charles
Frederick "Fred" Cumpston; two sons, Charles
K. "Kenny" (Robin D.) Cumpston and Eric L.
(Kathleen) Cumpston, all of Parkersburg; a
daughter, Debra Cox (Brian) of Parkersburg;
seven grandchildren; three brothers, William
(Jeannie) Gum and Thomas Michael (Nancy) Gum,
all of Parkersburg, and James David (Rosie)
Gum of Weston, W.Va.; one sister,
Charlotte "Sue" Sommerville of Parkersburg;
and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three sisters,
Hettie Dennison, Blairanne Middleton and
Barbara Jean Hurst.
The funeral service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at
Kimes Funeral Home, 521 Fifth Street,
Parkersburg, with Pastor Wes Jones
officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen
North Cemetery. The visitation will be from 2-
4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
William Clayton "Bill" Carr
Parkersburg, WV
William Clayton "Bill" Carr, 52, of Lakeview
Estates, Parkersburg, passed away Aug. 2,
2008, at his residence.
He was born Oct. 30, 1955, in Haverty de
Grace, Md., a son of the late William Earl and
Mary M. Lawrence Carr. Bill was a graduate of
Parkersburg High School. He attended Grace
Gospel Church in Pettyville and had served in
the United States Navy for 13 years.
Survivors include his brother, David Earl Carr
and his wife, Beverly, of Lexington, Ky.; his
sister, Nancy Margaret Grosso of Vienna;
nephews, Jeffrey Hines and his wife, Rhonda,
David Carr and his wife, Sarah, and Jonathan
Carr and his fiancee, Molly Bushong; and two
great-nephews, Brandon Hines and Garrett Carr.
The funeral service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at
Kimes Funeral Home, 521 Fifth St. Parkersburg,
with Pastor Mike Allen officiating. Burial will be at King Knob Cemetery in Ritchie
County. The visitation will be from 4-7 p.m.
today at the funeral home. The American Legion
Post 15 of Parkersburg with perform military
rites.
Memorial donations may be directed to the
Alzheimers Foundation or the American Heart
Association.
Ernestine Evans
Parkersburg, WV
Ernestine Evans, 92, of Parkersburg, passed
away July 30, 2008, at Sunbridge Nursing
Center, where she had been a resident for the
past two years.
She was born at Leesburg, Va., a daughter of
the late John T. and Martha Belle McCauley
Evans.
Ernestine had attended Christ United Methodist
Church, was a seamstress and dress maker and
enjoyed quilting. She was a 1933 graduate of
PHS and attended Potomac State College.
Surviving is her nephews, George N. Evans of
Vienna and Charles Ray Evans of Hollywood,
Fla.; a great-nephew, Kyle Edward Evans of
Hurricane; and two great-nieces, Cassie Lynn
Evans of Grayson, Ky., and Betty Ann Evans in
Australia.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded
in death by a brother, Orville Lee Evans; and
a sister, Pauline Evans.
At the request of Ernestine, there will be no
service or public visitation. Burial will be
Friday at the Mt. Olive Cemetery in Roane
County.
Memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia
Foundation in her memory.

Marshall Benson Dye
Parkersburg, WV
Marshall Benson Dye, 70, of Parkersburg passed
away July 27, 2008, at home.
He was born in Barberton, Ohio, a son of the
late James Howard "Jimmy" Dye and Myrtle Mae
Curfman Dye.
Marshall had worked as a truck driver, was a
member of the Masonic Lodge, enjoyed
woodworking and spending time with his
grandchildren.
Surviving is his former wife, Barbara Sprouse
of Vienna; four sons, Kenneth J. Dye
(Michelle) of Washington, Steven M. Dye
(Denise) of Vienna, Paul A. Dye (Susan) of
North Carolina and Phillip E. Dye of
Parkersburg; three daughters, Cathy D. Mays
(Rick) of South Carolina, Cindy A. McCauley
(Patrick) of Mineral Wells and Jennifer B.
Reynolds of Parkersburg; 18 grandchildren;
eight great-grandchildren; one brother, David
Dye of Kentucky; a sister, Delores Buskirk of
Parkersburg; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Harold
Dye; and a grandson, Jesse Reynolds.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at
Kimes Funeral Home, 521 Fifth St.,
Parkersburg, with his brother, Pastor David
Dye, officiating. Burial will follow. The
visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.
Wednesday at the funeral home.
