Shirley Marie Coates West, 65, of Parkersburg
passed away July 2, 2009, at Camden-Clark
Memorial Hospital.
She was born Dec. 3, 1943, at Xenia, Ohio,
daughter of the late Paul Edward Coats and
Charlette Marie Johnson Wilson and
stepdaughter of the late Flavis Wilson.
Shirley was a former employee of the Guard
Cleaners and was a homemaker.
Surviving is her son, Carl E. West II of
Parkersburg; two daughters, Debra Ann Freeman
and Theresa Midcap (Paul Jr.), all of
Parkersburg; five grandchildren, Priscilla
(Rusty) Blosser, Paul (Andrea) Midcap, Ricky
Freeman, Carl West III and James (Leisah)
Bailey; three brothers, Arlen Wilson in North
Carolina, Anthony Wilson of Parkersburg and
Clayton Wilson in California; and several
aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl
E. West Sr.; a daughter, Carla Jean West; a
brother, Texas Wilson; and a great-grandson,
Michael (Mikey) Midcap.
The funeral service for Shirley will be 2 p.m.
Tuesday at Kimes Funeral Home, 521 Fifth St.,
Parkersburg, with Pastor Jerry Caplinger
officiating. Burial will follow at Mt.
Pleasant Cemetery at Mineral Wells. The
visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time
of service Tuesday at the funeral home.
Lloyd Leo Rawson
Cavin Fork, Murraysville, WV
Lloyd Leo Rawson, 70, of Cavin Fork,
Murraysville, W.Va., passed away unexpectedly
on Thursday, July 2, 2009, at his home.
He was born Aug. 23, 1938, in Belleville, a
son of Margie Nohe Rawson of Murraysville and
the late Lloyd Lewis Rawson.
Leo retired with Gas Transport with 26 years
of service, had served in Germany with the
U.S. Army, was a member of the
Ravenswood/Ripley FFA for 25 years, was a
former member of the Pond Creek Volunteer Fire
Department and attended the Christian Life
Center of Parkersburg.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by
his wife, Ruth Moore Rawson; two sons, Randy
Rawson (Regenia) of Murraysville and Kevin
Rawson (Amanda) of Ravenswood; five
grandchildren, Pheobe and Sammy Rawson and
Travis, Ethan and Cameron Rawson; a
stepgranddaughter, Crissy Raines; two
brothers, Roger Rawson (Karen) of Belleville
and Andy Rawson (Pat) of Murraysville; and
several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for Leo will be 2 p.m.
Sunday at Kimes Funeral Home, 521 Fifth St.,
Parkersburg, with Pastor Delton Smith
officiating. Burial will follow at the Mt.
Zion Cemetery at Belleville. The visitation
will be from 2-8 p.m. today at the funeral
home.
Richard Lee "Dick" Rader I
Parkersburg, WV
Richard Lee "Dick" Rader I passed away to be
with the Lord on June 27, 2009, at his home in
Parkersburg at the age of 63.
He was born Nov. 30, 1945, in Parkersburg, a
son of the late Daniel W. Rader and the late
Alma J. Bostic York. He attended Parkersburg
High School, was a U.S. Navy veteran and
attended the Boaz Baptist Church. He owned and
operated his own business, The Day By Night
Janitorial and Lawn Service.
Dick was a supportive Parkersburg High School
fan throughout the years and loved watching
PHS football and baseball. He was an active
member of the American Legion of Parkersburg
and was a minister. He was a loving and caring
husband, father and grandfather.
Surviving is his wife, Linda Midcap Rader; two
sons, Richard L. II (Carol) Rader of Vienna
and Randall A. Rader of Parkersburg; two
daughters, Missy D. Rader Davis (Brian) of
Belpre and Rebecca A. Rader Gibson (Alonzo) of
Walker; one stepson, Greg Midcap (Lisa) of
Vienna; eight grandchildren, Michael,
Samantha, Brittany, Chelsie, Tyee, Raygan,
Lindsey and Megan; six brothers and sisters,
James Miller of Belpre, Jane Sparks of
Florida, Okey Rader of Parkersburg, Garren
Rader of Florida, Mary Katherine Cowan of
Harrisville and Eric Rader of Utah; and
several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his mother and father, he was
preceded in death by a brother, Frederick
Rader; and a sister, Patsy Rader.
Dick will be deeply missed by all who were
acquainted with him.
The funeral service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday
at Kimes Funeral Home, 521 Fifth St.,
Parkersburg, with Pastor Bob Alfred
officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet
Cemetery with military rites provided by the
American Legion Post 15 of Parkersburg. The
visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.
Tuesday at the funeral home.
Earl Raymond Smitherman
Parkersburg, WV
Earl Raymond Smitherman, 85, of Parkersburg,
departed this life at St. Joseph's Hospital
surrounded by his family, on Father's Day,
June 21, 2009, to be with his Heavenly Father.
Earl was born Feb. 2, 1924, at Peoria, in the
Beaver Dam Township of Watauga County, N.C., a
son of the late Harve Martin and Burlie L.
Millsaps Smitherman formerly of Sugar Grove,
N.C.
He retired from the American Viscose with 30
years of service and G.E. Plastics with 10
years of service. He was a U.S. Navy veteran
of World War II, having served on the U.S.S.
Liddle, a Destroyer Escort in the Pacific. He
was a former member of the VFW, the American
Legion and the Woodmen of the World. He also
served as a volunteer fireman at Camden Avenue
in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
Earl loved life and all of God's creations;
the mountains, rivers, oceans, beaches, all of
the outdoors, boating, fishing, hiking and
camping. He loved working in the garden and
yard with hard working hands now put to rest.
Surviving is his wife of 48 years, Beulah
Wines Smitherman; three sons, Bobby R. (Janet)
Smitherman of Gastonia, N.C., Michael D.
(Karen) Smitherman of Smith Mountain Lake,
Va., and Joseph Mark (Kelta) Smitherman of
Belleville, W.Va.; stepchildren, Butch (Nancy)
Brandt of Vincent, Ohio, Charles (Melanie)
Brandt of Marietta and Sue (Tom) Eden of
Vienna; 19 grandchildren, Randall Smitherman,
Michelle Matthews, Kristie McMillen, Courtney
McLain, Francie Smitherman, Lisa Perkins, Mick
Wenmoth, Todd Wenmoth, Lori Wenmoth, Savannah
Abbott, Tom Brandt, Samantha Stealey, Debora
Deem, Tonda Deem, Tim Eden, Tom Eden, Charmel
Wesel, Christopher Brandt and Chad Brandt; 33
great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-
grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in
death by his brother, Wiley James Smitherman;
his sister, Margaret Kathleen Childress; and
two grandchildren, Shari Smith and
William "Buddy" Brandt.
The funeral service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday
at Kimes Funeral Home, 521 Fifth Street,
Parkersburg. Pastor Ryan Brooks will officiate
and burial will follow at Sunset Memory
Gardens with military rites provided by the
American Legion Post 15 of Parkersburg.
The visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at
the funeral home.
Paul Marshall Cochran
Parkersburg, WV
Paul Marshall Cochran, 84, of Parkersburg
passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at his
son's residence in Parkersburg.
He was born May 4, 1925, at College Hill Road
in the Harris District of Wood County, the son
of the late Hubert E. and Alma Fankhouser
Cochran.
Paul was a graduate of Parkersburg High School
and attended Mountain State College. He served
with the United States Marines, having been a
veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He
retired from the Parkersburg Fire Department
in 1978 and retired from the Parkersburg
Sanitary Board in 1989. He was also the owner
and manager of the Edgelawn RV Park since 1972.
Paul was also a land surveyor and was a
charter member and past president of the
Little Kanawha Association of Land Surveyors,
member of the Parkersburg Elks Lodge 198,
lifetime member of the Disabled American
Veterans, lifetime member of the Veterans of
Foreign Wars, lifetime member of the
Parkersburg American Legion Post 15, lifetime
member of the Parkersburg Moose Lodge 1118,
lifetime member of the AmVets and member of
the NCO Club.
Surviving is his wife, Betty Hedge Cochran;
two sons, Philip Cochran of Tampa, Fla., and
Paul William Cochran and his wife, Kimberly,
of Parkersburg; five grandchildren, Justin
Cochran, Marisa Cochran and Evan Cochran, all
of Parkersburg, Paxton Cochran of California
and Summer Cochran of Morgantown; four
stepgrandchildren, Thomas Smith of Rockport,
Jessica and David Petty and Matthew Smith of
Parkersburg; four great-grandchildren, Aurora
Cochran of California and Anthony, Arianna and
Aiden Petty of Parkersburg; one sister, Mary
Lou Horner and her husband, Jack, of Veto,
Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in
death by a sister, Doris Boone; and an infant
son in 1956.
The funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at
Kimes Funeral Home, 521 Fifth St.,
Parkersburg, with the Rev. Rufus Hoalcraft
officiating. Entombment will follow at Sunset
Memory Gardens with military rites provided by
the American Legion Post 15. The visitation
will be from 4-8 p.m. today at the funeral
home, where the Moose Lodge will conduct a
memorial service at 7:30 p.m.
