Audra Pearl Kiger
Vienna, WV

Audra Pearl Kiger, 83, of Vienna, passed away
Jan. 3, 2011, at Camden-Clark Memorial
Hospital following a lengthy illness.

Audra was born March 26, 1927 in Gay, W.Va.,
the fifth child of Ernest William Parsons and
Etta Mae Allen Parsons. In addition to her
parents, Audra was preceded in death by her
husband of 46 years, John Wesley Kiger Sr.;
two sons, William E. "Bill" Kiger and John
Wesley Kiger Jr.; five brothers, Cyrus,
Delbert, Floyd "Buck", Wilbert "Tick" and
Herman "Hobe" Parsons; two sisters, Gracie I.
Parsons and Norma Allen.

She is survived by her two daughters, Dr. Anna
J. Kiger (husband Earl Benzenhafer) of Dallas,
Texas and Linda K. Kiger of Vienna; three
sisters, Goldie Rhodes of Ripley, Elvie
Stewart of Marietta, Ohio and Stella Leach of
Parkersburg; nine grandchildren, John P.
Kiger, Zachary A. Kiger, Timothy R. Kiger,
Grace Ann Nixon, Wesley R. Nixon, Rachel E.
Queen, Audra M. Cain, Joseph F. Kiger and
Whitney E. Kiger; one step-granddaughter,
Ashley E. Way; two daughters-in-law, Jan P.
Kiger and Denny M. Kiger; one son-in-law,
Michael E. Nixon of Morgantown; five great-
grandchildren; and 31 nieces and nephews.

Audra moved to Parkersburg as a young woman in
1944 where she immediately found employment at
the Chancellor Hotel and later on as a floral
designer at Dudley's Florist on the corner of
Fifth and Juliana. She worked at the American
Viscose plant in the Coning and Beaming
Departments until the closure of the plant in
the early 1970s and eventually retired from
Union Insulator in the early 1980s.

Audra was a unique, inspiring and formidable
woman. Although she spent many years in the
workforce, she considered her most important
work to be children and family. She was
extremely proud of her children and their
professional accomplishments. One of her
greatest joys was the time she spent with her
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Everyone's favorite day was "going to
Granny's." Her home was always full of
children and laughter, and yes, all of the
mayhem that comes with a houseful of friends
and family.

No matter the size of the crowd or the number
of pets involved, Audra seemed to relish every
minute. It seemed she was never without a
smiling grandchild on her lap. When she was
not busy with family, Audra enjoyed many
activities. She was an avid quilter and
gardener, often quilting with her sisters and
exchanging plant clippings with them. She
could name every flower in her garden and
regale the listener with the origin of the
planting. Never lacking for a story, she was
quick of wit and spirited in discussion. Audra
was truly the grand matriarch of the Kiger
family. A woman of great faith and indomitable
spirit, she will be fondly remembered and
greatly missed by all who knew her.

The funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m.
Thursday at Kimes Funeral Home, 521 5th
Street, Parkersburg, with the Rev. Dr. Patrick
Kerr officiating. Burial will follow at
Parkersburg Memorial Gardens. Visitation is 5-
8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the donor's
charity of choice in memory of Audra P. Kiger
