Opal Berneda Dowler Deem, 96, of Parkersburg,
passed away June 16, 2011, at Camden Clark
Medical Center-Memorial Campus.
She was born in Wood County June 17, 1914, a
daughter of the late Arthur E. and Pearl A.
Allen Dowler.
Opal was a longtime active member of Trinity
United MethodistChurch where she was a member
of the Goodwill Sunday School Class and the
Star of Hope Circle of the United Methodist
Women. She had worked at American Viscose for
20 years and she and her late husband had
owned and operated Pike Street Grocery for
over 10 years.
Opal was a former member of the Ft. Neal
Kiwanis Club, the Wood County Senior Citizens
and the Ren-Dor Bowling Leagues. She was
active with the Meals on Wheels Program and
the Gihon Food Pantry. She enjoyed bowling,
gardening and her pet cat "Bob".
Surviving is one sister, Vera Henry of Luling,
La.; two sisters-in-law, Marjorie Dowler of
Waterford, Ohio, and Anorine Herbert of
Plauchville, La., and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded
in death by her husband of 50 years, Ray C.
Deem in 1985; brothers, Lester, Richard,
Arthur, Harold, Bernard and Clarence Dowler;
sisters, Ruth Deem, Roberta Kesterson, Betty
Dowler and Norma Jean Acree and four nephews.
The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday
at Kimes Funeral Home, 521 Fifth Street,
Parkersburg. Pastor David Stilgenbauer will
officiate and burial will follow at Evergreen
South Cemetery. The visitation will be on
Saturday from 4-8 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity
United Methodist Church in memory of Opal.
Helen Elaine Brand Amos
Parkersburg, WV
Helen Elaine Brand Amos, 77, of Parkersburg,
passed away June 10, 2011, at her home.
She was born June 5, 1934 in Parkersburg, a
daughter of the late Clement and Annabelle
Pierce Brand. Helen was a homemaker and held to
the Methodist Faith.
She is survived by her husband, Ronald
E. "Gene" Amos of Parkersburg; two daughters,
Cheryl (Randall) Burrows and Joyce Amos, both
of Parkersburg; one grandson, Joe Burrows
(Leyla Paul) of Parkersburg; four great-
grandchildren, Joseph, Trystan, Shiloh and
Brody Burrows; two brothers, Cleston "Bing"
(Darlene) Brand of Lubeck and Joe Brand (Linda)
of Ripley; one sister, Oleta "Peach" (Greg)
Lyons of Grayson, Ga., and several nieces and
nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in
death by a sister, Patricia Lott.
There will be a private funeral service Sunday
at Kimes Funeral Home. There will be no public
visitation.
Polly Jean West Tanner
Parkersburg, WV
Polly Jean West Tanner, 62, of Parkersburg,
passed away May 19, 2011, at her home.
She was born July 27, 1948, at Belleville, a
daughter of the late Clarence Clinton and Elma
Miller West.
Polly had worked at Coldwater Creek and as a
child had attended Belleville United Methodist
Church. She was a NASCAR fan and enjoyed
motorcycle riding.
Surviving is her companion of 22 years, Harley
Bickerstaff; her daughter, Angela Waters (Neil
Morris) of Waverly; her granddaughter, Cayla
Waters of Waverly; two brothers, John West of
Parkersburg and Darrell West (Aleta Burdette)
of Belleville; four sisters, Connie (Gary)
Backus of Parkersburg, Elma "Sissy" Stalnaker
of Parkersburg, Diane (Gordon) Milhoan of
Parkersburg and Rene (Mike) Butcher of
Washington, W.Va.; and several nieces and
nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded
in death by a grandson, Tyler Dean Waters; two
brothers, Harold "Pete" West and Clarence West
(Jr.); and her pet schnauzer, "Annie."
The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at
Kimes Funeral Home, 521 Fifth St.,
Parkersburg. Pastor Jim Eakle will officiate
and burial will follow at Sunset Memory
Gardens. The visitation will be today from 4-8
p.m.
John David (John - John) Hostottle
Parkersburg, WV
John David (John-John) Hostottle, 42, of
Parkersburg, passed away May 19, 2011, after a
brief illness.
John was born June 28, 1968 in Parkersburg. He
was a 1988 graduate of Parkersburg South High
School.
There will be a memorial service, Monday at 6
p.m. at the Salvation Army Chapel, 534 Fifth
Street in Parkersburg.
Remembrances may be made in the form desired
by friends. A "John Hostottle Benefit" is
being held Saturday, May 28 4 p.m. at the
Fishbone Grill located at #1 17th Street,
Vienna.

Gary Eugene Chaffn
Parkersburg, WV
Gary Eugene Chaffin, 55, of Parkersburg,
passed away April 29, 2011, at the Willows
Nursing Home.
He was born April 24, 1956, in Parkersburg, a
son of the late Archie Austin and Jessie
Vernelle Boggs Chaffin.
Gary had worked as a concrete finisher, had
served four years in the U.S. Marines, was a
member of Pleasant View Baptist Church and was
a member of Disabled American Veterans.
He is survived by his son, Gary Wayne Taylor
of Florance, S.C.; daughter, Shelley Jean
Cottle Deem of Parkersburg; three
grandchildren, Brandon Stoops, Caleb Deem and
Shyla Tant; one great-granddaughter, Aubrey
Stoops; three brothers, Michael Chaffin, Roger
(Vera Bennett) Chaffin and Randy (Kay)
Chaffin, all of Parkersburg; his sister and
caregiver, Judy Tebay of Parkersburg;
stepsister, Shirley Smith of Parkersburg;
several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and
nephews; and his stepmother, Ethel R. Chaffin
of Parkersburg.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in
death by a brother, Kenneth Chaffin; and a
sister, Rose Villers.
The funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday at
Kimes Funeral Home, 521 Fifth St.,
Parkersburg, with Pastor Jerry Caplinger
officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset
Memory Gardens, with military rites provided
by American Legion Post 15. Visitation will be
from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today.
Hazel Ann Miller
Lakland, FL
Hazel Ann Miller, 87, of Lakeland, Fla., went
to be with the Lord on April 25, 2011, at
Lakeland Regional Medical Center.
She was born April 5, 1924, in McFarland,
W.Va., the daughter of the late Agatha
(Woodring) and Ray Michael.
Mrs. Miller was preceded in death by her
husband, Garnet Ray Miller; an infant child,
Carlean Marie Miller; a son, Gerald Ray
Miller; a brother, Holly Michael; a sister,
Ressie Quick; stepsons, Garney Ray Miller and
Charles Miller; stepdaughter, Martha Lemley;
and a grandson, Russell (Rusty) Miller.
She is survived by sons, Tim (Karin) Miller of
Lakeland, Fla., and Ed (Kathy) Miller of Elon,
N.C.; and stepdaughter, Susie (Jerry) Viers of
Louisville, Ky.
There will be no public visitation or
services. Burial will be at Evergreen South
Cemetery.
