James Leslie Barnett
James Leslie “Jim” Barnett, 85, of St. Albans, passed away March 4, 2006, at Thomas Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
He was born in Petersburg, Virginia, and moved to the Charleston area in his youth. He graduated from Charleston High School prior to entering the Army in World War II. He was proud to have served as a member of the 9th Armored Division, 14th Tank Battalion, in Europe, where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was part of the force that made the first land invasion into Germany at the bridge at Remagen. After the war, he worked for Union Carbide Corporation where he met his love, Marge Graham, who preceded him in death. He also worked for Claude Henson Associates, Emmons & Hawkins Hardware and The Logan Corporation before retiring and enjoying more of his other love, golf. Jim, a charter member of Sleepy Hollow Golf Club, treasured the game of golf and his friends at the club. He was truly proud to have been granted an “Honorary Life Membership” by the club members.
He will be missed by his immediate family, stepdaughter, Sandy Foster, and granddaughters and husbands, Kim and Jeff Goode and Erin and Mike Rudge of St. Albans; cousins, Patti Kalin of Aiken, South Carolina, Bill Mulcaha of Cornelius, North Carolina, Stephanie Ranson of St. Albans, David and Carole Shortt of Teays Valley, and all of their children. He will be also missed by his “other family,” his golfing friends at Sleepy Hollow.
Services were held Wednesday, March 8, at Casdorph & Curry Funeral Home, St. Albans. Entombment in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Lillian Joyce McClain
Lillian Joyce McClain, 95, of Scott Depot, passed away March 4, 2006, at Regency Place, Scott Depot, with her beloved sons at her side.
Born July 20, 1910, a daughter of the late Arnold A. and Sarah Evaline Burton Joyce, she was also preceded in death 33 years ago by her husband, Robert Bentley McClain; her sisters, Madeline Joyce, Elizabeth Robertson and Inez Eggleton; and her brothers, Wilson, Lyman and Robert Joyce.
She was a lifelong resident of Scott Depot and was a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church, Hurricane. She was a dedicated homemaker and loved gardening, quilting and the John Henson Senior Citizens Center.
Surviving are her sons, R. Gary McClain and his wife, Dolly, and E. W. “Dub” McClain and his wife, Shirley, all of Scott Depot; her daughter, Norma Hurt and her husband, Ronald, of St. Leonard, Md.; her sisters, Alice Eggleton, Colleen Byrnside and Ruth Pauley, all of Scott Depot, Jean Briscoe of Luling, La., Arlene Wells of Winfield; and her brother, Hobert L. Joyce of Scott Depot. She was a beloved grandmother to Robert McClain and his wife, Tina, Todd Hurt and his wife, Sandra, Mary Elizabeth Hensley and her husband, Gary, Brian McClain and his wife, Michele, Maria Weaver and her husband, Kevin, Diana Burgess and her husband, Shawn and Ryan Hurt. Also surviving are 11 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 8, 2006 at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane with Dr. Jeffrey Johnson, the Rev. Lee White and the Rev. E. Ted Wall officiating. Burial in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Rhoda Jane Carter Adkins
Rhoda Jane Carter Adkins, 91, of Salt Rock, W.Va., formerly of Harts, W.Va., widow of Tilman Adkins, went home to be with the Lord on March 4, 2006. She was born February 23, 1915, in Logan County, West Virginia, the daughter of the late James and Evaline (Bryant) Carter. She was preceded in death by a son and daughter-in-law, Jackie and Virginia Adkins, one granddaughter, Sabrina Rose Adkins, and 19 brothers and sisters. She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Albert Kendall and Anna Adkins of Waco, Ky., David and Bonnie Adkins of Florida, and Samuel and Dee Adkins of Salt Rock; four daughters and sons-in-law, Leah Rae and Charlie Gill of Salt Rock, Mary Lou and Raymond Cazad of Barboursville, Helen Ruth and Jim Gill of Salt Rock, and Sheila Ann Adkins of Salt Rock; 25 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was a member Enon Baptist Church at Harts, W.Va. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by Elder Thomas Vance. Burial in Gill Cemetery, Salt Rock. Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Keith Carl Hollister
Keith Carl Hollister, 67, of Barboursville, passed away Sunday, March 5, 2006, at Huntington Health and Rehab. Graveside services were conducted Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at the Milton Cemetery by Pastor Phil Wilson. He was the son of the late Carl Robinson Hollister and Pearl Hollister Walker. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He is survived by one daughter, Linda Hollister; one son, Michael Hollister; and one grandson, James Hollister. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was charge of arrangements.

Ruby Lee Rowley
Ruby Lee Rowley, 86, of Huntington, W.Va., died March 4, 2006, in St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, March 9, 2006, at Henson Mortuary by the Dr. Tim Yates. Interment in Ridgelawn Memorial Park, Huntington. She was born June 24, 1919, at Neola, W.Va., daughter of the late Frank and Frances Kincaid Sexton. She is survived by her husband, Walter Rowley; two daughters, Donna Rowley of Huntington and Barbara Adkins of Layton, Utah; grandchildren Debbie and her husband Garry Smith of San Diego, Calif., Denise Adkins of Ogden Utah and Kip Adkins of Anaheim, Calif.; and two great-grandchildren, Hannah Smith and Madalyn Adkins.

Lew Edward Scruggs
Lew Edward Scruggs, 85, of Barboursville passed away Monday, March 6, 2006, at Heritage Center. Services were conducted Thursday, March 9, 2006, at White Chapel Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Barboursville, by Brother Norris Chaney. He was born May 28, 1920, in Greenbrier County, W.Va., a son of the late Eddie and Ufah Robinson Scruggs. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Shaffer Scruggs and two brothers, Eldon and Preston Scruggs. He was a mechanic by trade, a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army and was a former member of the Barboursville Volunteer Fire Department. He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Tim Cooke of Barboursville, Stephanie and Robert Gibson of Ona; one son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Kris Scruggs and their son Brandon of Barboursville; three grandchildren, Heather Berry and her husband Chris of Flatwoods, Ky., Manda Gibson and Jenna Gibson, both of Ona; one great-grandson, Treyton Berry of Flatwoods; and several nieces and nephews. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements. The family would like to thank the staff of Heritage Center and Hospice of Huntington for the wonderful care they provided for Lew.

Joe H. Burford
Joe H. Burford, 76, of St. Albans, passed away March 6, 2006, in Nitro, of an apparent heart attack.
He was the owner of Valley Cash Feed Store in Nitro and a member of the American Legion. Joe was one of the organizers for the Rock Branch Community Bank. He was an Army veteran. He loved gardening.
He is survived by his wife, Yvonne, daughters and sons-in-law, June and Pat Cipoletti of Wellsburg, and Patrice and Dave Banker of Hurricane; son and daughter-in-law, Benji and Kristi Burford of Hurricane; sister, June Geick of Texas ; brother, Ben Burford of Charleston; grandchildren, Jessica and Cassie Cipoletti, Emily Hobson, Nikki, Craig, and David Banker, and Peyton and Jacob Burford.
Casdorph & Curry Funeral Home, St. Albans, was in charge of arrangements.
Honoring Joe’s wishes, he was cremated.

Mary Terry McCallister
Mrs. Mary Terry McCallister, 90, of Scott Depot, went home to the Lord on Monday, March 6, 2006, after a long illness.
Mary was a lifelong resident of Putnam County, a member of Judson Baptist Church, Winfield, and a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, P W. “Pete” McCallister.
Mary is survived by her daughters, Carol L. Sanford of Scott Depot, Connie Straughan of Hampstead, N.C.; sons, Thomas E. McCallister Sr. and his wife, Carolyn of Scott Depot, and Terry E. McCallister of St. Albans.
Mary’s grandchildren are James A. Straughan of Hampstead, N.C., Mary D. Rose and her husband, Scott, of Nitro, Thomas E. McCallister Jr. and his wife, Sherry, of Hurricane, and Ryan E. McCallister of St. Albans. Mary was blessed with three great-grandchildren, Jarred S. “Scottie” McCallister of Nitro, Tanner Wyatt McCallister, and Tory Layne McCallister, both of Hurricane. .
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, March 9, 2006 at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. H.B. White and the Rev. Fred McCallister officiating. Burial in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Berneda Bell Legg
Mrs. Berneda Bell Legg, 85, of Bentree, Nicholas County, passed away Monday, March 6, 2006, at Teays Valley Center, Hurricane, after an extended illness.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Vaughan Baptist Church. She was born Feb. 8, 1921, at Vaughan. She was preceded in death by her late husband, Porter Scott Legg; two sons, Lloyd Lee and Carl Ray Legg; parents, Arnal and Mabel Brown Legg; and two brothers, Harold and Nenferd Neal.
She is survived by her daughter, Cathy Rynearson of Youngstown, Fla.; sons, Henry Legg of Mexico Beach, Fla.; Wando “Bud” Legg of Nokesville, Va.; Lewis Legg of Ashford, and Fred Legg and Jerry Legg, both of Red House; sisters, Lydia Neal of Tad; Carol Norman of Mill Creek; Doris Kinder of Tad; Clarrice Shore of Saranac Lake, N.Y, and Ellouise Holcomb of Richmond, Va.; brothers, Wando Neal of Clover, S.C., and Frank Neal of Lockwood; 12 grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
Services were conducted Thursday, March 9, 2006 at Vaughan Baptist Church, Vaughan, with the Rev. Delmer Sizemore officiating. Interment in Montgomery Memorial Park, London. Pennington Funeral Home Chapel, Gauley Bridge, was in charge of arrangements.

Wiilliam Frederick Webb
William Frederick “Fred” Webb of Turkey Creek, died March 7, 2006, at CAMC after a short illness. He was an organ donor. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Willadine Webb of Richwood.
Surviving are his long-term companion, Marsha McClung; her three children, Erik Cobb, Kevin Boothe, and Jeremy McClung, and three grandchildren; sisters, Alicia Webb and Lois Burkholder; niece, Chaste Barclay; and nephew, Quentin Truman,
There was no service or visitation.

Zachary Shawn Burdine
Zachary Shawn Burdine, 47, of Huntington, passed away March 9, 2006, in Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, March 13, 2006, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, by the Rev. Donnie McCloud. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. He was born Sept. 30, 1958, in Huntington, a son of the late Clyde William and Rebecca Louise Reynolds Burdine. He was preceded in death by one brother, Dennis Burdine. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Hensley Burdine; two daughters, Tiffany Dawn Burdine Bailey and Chassity Nicole Burdine; three sons, Kaleb Nicholas Burdine, Zachary Shawn Burdine, Jr., and Dennis Scott Burdine; one sister, Wanda Blair; one brother, Curtis Burdine; five grandchildren, Alexia, Madison, Michaela, Isabella and Issac Vaughan Burdine; special nieces, Tonya and Angela Burdine; a very special nephew, Curtis Burdine, Jr.; very special brother-in-law, Bobby Hensley and very special son-in-law, Sam Bailey. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

Welba June Ward Cullum
Welba June Ward Cullum, of Huntington, passed away Thursday, March 9, 2006, in St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral. services were conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, 2006, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by Pastor Bill Adkins. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. She was born May 23, 1934, in Huntington, a daughter of the late Lindsay Lorne and Inez Marie Ward. She was a former employee of White Way Cleaners. She was preceded in death by her husband, George R. Cullum, Sr.; daughter-in-law, Kellee J. McComas; great-granddaughter, Adrian N. Black. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Georgeanna L. and Elmer ‘Buckie” Black of Huntington; three sons and daughters-in-law George “Rich” Cullum, Jr., and Milana of Barboursville, William “Danny” and Shelia Cullum of Rome, Ohio, and Gary M. Cullum of Wayne; sister, Mary Ellen Combs and her husband, Robert Combs of Huntington; Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Joy Hinkle, Killeen, Texas , and Phyllis Hayes of Rutland, Ohio and many brothers and sisters in Christ; eight grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren and one on the way. Family wishes to extend their sincere thanks and. appreciation to the medical staff, 3rd and 5th, floors of St. Mary’s Medical Center and Hospice of Huntington. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.
