Gary L. Smith

Gary Lee Smith, 54, of Route 1, Washington, WV died Saturday, July 16, 2005 at St. Joseph's Hospital.

He was born in Wood County, WV, a son of Eleanor Reeder Smith of Mineral Wells, WV and the late Glen R. Smith.

Gary attended Good Shepherd Episcopal Church and was an electrician at DuPont Washington Works. He was a member of the South Parkersburg Jaycees and was a 4-H leader with Lubeck Lucky Clovers. He was a 1969 Parkersburg South High School graduate and attended Hocking Technical College.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Ginger L. DeLancy Smith; a daughter, Brittany D. Smith, of Washington, WV; a son, Ty E. Smith and his fianc', Stefanie Smith, of Marietta, OH; a grandson, Demetrie Smith, of Marietta, OH; a stepgrandson, Celan O'Dell of Marietta, OH; a brother, Billy R. Smith of Parkersburg, WV; a sister, Betty J. Somerville and her husband, Carl E., of Mineral Wells, WV; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 20, 2005 at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church with the Reverend Arthur L. Bennett, III officiating. Interment will follow in Big Tygart Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 2333 Pike Street, south Parkersburg, WV.

Memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, Property Reserve Fund, 903 Charles Street, Parkersburg, WV 26101.

Hazel G. Rawlings

Hazel G. Rawlings, 90, of Senecaville, Ohio, formerly of Vienna, WV, passed away July 16, 2005, at Southeastern Ohio Regional Hospital in Cambridge, Ohio.

She was born in Jackson County, WV, a daughter of the late Jack S. and Clara Cooper Wilcox. She was retired from the American Viscose, a member of Cornerstone Gospel Church in Vienna, WV and was an Army veteran.

She is survived by two sons, Robert Rawlings of Cambridge, Ohio and S. Michael Rawlings and his wife, L. Jane, of Senecaville, Ohio; four grandchildren, Stephanie Rawlings of Columbus, Ohio, Angela Rawlings of Senecaville, Ohio, Megan Rawlings of Virginia and Miranda Richards of Vienna, WV; and numerous special nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert H. Rawlings; one son, Terence Rawlings; and one grandson, Terence, Jr.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, 1005 at the Cornerstone Gospel Church, Vienna, WV, with Pastor mark Wilding officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Parkersburg, WV. Friends may call from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 3005 Grand Central Ave. Vienna, WV, and one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.

Howard J. Carpenter, Jr.

Howard Junior Carpenter, Jr., 45, of Parkersburg, WV died July 12, 2005, at Eagle Pointe.

He was born in Parkersburg, a son of the late Howard J. and Ruth Ann Rhodes Carpenter.

He is survived by two sons, Christopher A. Carpenter and Jonathan H. Carpenter, both of Belpre, Ohio; a maternal grandmother, Jane Rhodes of Parkersburg, WV; a sister, Crystal Wattenberger; and a brother, Piper Larry Carpenter, both of Kentucky.

Memorial services will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, July 16, 2005 at Homeland Community Church, Camden Ave. Parkersburg, WV with the Rev. Ron Walker officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at the church.

Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 2333 Pike St. Parkersburg, WV is in charge of arrangements.

Eleanore M. Boyd

Eleanore Malinda Boyd, 83, of Parkersburg, WV, died Saturday, July 2, 2005, at The Willows Nursing Home.

She was the daughter of the late Randolph and Ella Mattics Ruble of Mineral Wells, WV. Mrs. Boyd had been a homemaker during the latter years of her life. She and her husband had previously lived in Mineral Wells, WV and Melbourne, Florida. They spent the remaining years of their lives in the Parkersburg, WV area.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband and best friend, John Raymond Boyd; sisters, Louise Goudy, Ruby Edgell and Hazel Roth; and brothers, Harry S. Ruble and Clifford Ruble. She was the last living sibling of her family.

She is survived by a daughter, Sharon (Joe) Craddock of Fairfax, S.C.; grandson, Peter (Missy) Craddock; great-grandson, Joseph of Isle of Psalm, S.C.; niece and caregiver, Janie (Dave) Gorrell of Parkersburg, WV and Jill Edgell of Mentor, Ohio; and nephews, Charles Michael (Judy) Ruble of Palm Bay, Florida, Paul Gene (Maxine) Ruble of Parkersburg, WV and Dennis (Christy)Edgell of Mentor, Ohio and Steve and Eric Boyd of Parkersburg, WV. Eleanore is also survived by her sister-in-law Esther Boyd; dear friends, Jean Little, Johnny and Pauline Bee; cousin, Norman (Helen) Ruble of Mineral Wells, WV; great-nieces, Beth Wigal and Kelli Lewis; and many other family members and friends.

As per her wishes, her body was donated to the Human Gift Registry at WVU in Morgantown.

Billy Joe "Chuck" Bennett

Billy Joe 'Chuck' Bennett, 79, of Vienna, WV passed away Thursday, July 7, 2005, at St. Joseph's Hospital after an extended illness.

He was born August 20, 1925, in Gilmer County, WV, a son of the late Samuel M. Bennett Jr. and Fluence M. Keister Bennett.

Chuck graduated from Tanner High School in Gilmer County. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943-46 during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He had been a Vienna resident since 1957. Chuck worked at Penn Metal Company for 14 years. He retired from Kardex Systems Inc. in 1990 after 17 years of service.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Carol S. Ross Bennett; a son, Stephen Bennett of Titusville, Florida; two daughters, Patricia Colangeli of Circleville, Ohio, and Angela Bennett of Vienna, WV; a sister, Hannah Taylor of Vienna, WV; three grandsons; and a granddaughter.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 9, 2005 at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 3005 Grand Central Ave. Vienna, WV, with the Rev. Gene Hutton officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen North Cemetery. Friends may call from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday.

Virginia Lee Cornell

Virginia Lee Cornell, 58, of Belpre, Ohio passed away at her residence, Wednesday July 6, 2005.

She was born July 4, 1947 in Washington, Missouri a daughter of the late Clifford and Hazel Mueller Wenkel. Virginia worked at G.E. Plastics for 25 years and was a member of The First Assembly of God in Parkersburg, WV.

She is survived by five daughters, Missy Cornell of Belpre, Ohio, Cindy Roush of Virginia, Amanda Cornell of Parkersburg, WV, Jessica Cornell of Vienna, WV and Melody Leonard of Ravenswood, WV; four sons, Jason Roush of North Carolina, Matt and Mike Cornell of Belpre, Ohio and Jeff Cornell of Kansas City, Missouri; and one sister, Donna Wenkel of Texas.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one brother.

Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 9, 2005 at The First Assembly of God on Marrtown Road in Parkersburg, WV with Rev. Shirlene Piggott, Pastor Tony Raffa and Pastor Bob Holland officiating. There will be no visitation. Tatman Funeral Home, 220 Main St. Belpre, Ohio is assisting the family with arrangements.

Alma A. Roberts

Alma Alfreda (Freda) Durst Roberts, formerly of Parkersburg, WV, died July 3, 2005, at Vermilion, Ohio, after a long bout with Alzheimer's disease.

The daughter of William and Mary Durst, she was born in Grantsville, WV on March 2, 1928. She had attended both Mount Hope Baptist Temple and Fifth Avenue Baptist Church in Huntington, WV.

She was a kind and gentle woman who loved her family and everyone around her, and she taught her children to care about others. She was an enthusiastic fan of football, baseball and professional wrestling, and an avid card player and reader. She was a teller of fine stories about growing up in the Great Depression in Calhoun County, WV.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe; her sister, Elesta Whipkey; and her brother, Simon Tuttle.

She will be forever remembered by her daughter, Beverly Jean Johnson; her son, Franklin D. Roberts; and their families, including son-in-law, Robert; daughter-in-law, Teresa; four grandchildren, Christopher, Aaron, Lindsay and Jonah; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 6, 2005 at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 2333 Pike St. Parkersburg, WV, with the Rev. Dana Gatewood officiating. Burial will follow in the Nobe Cemetery in Calhoun County, WV. Friends may call from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Irene Douglas

Irene Fankhouser Douglas, 90, a resident of Vienna, WV, passed away July 2, 2005, at The Arbors of Marietta.

She was born April 15, 1915, in Parkersburg, WV, to Albert and Elizabeth Coull Fankhouser. A graduate of Parkersburg High School in 1932, Irene worked at J.C. Penney for several years.

She formerly taught Sunday School classes at Wayside United Methodist Church and was a Girl Scout leader in her younger years. A devoted homemaker, Irene loved gardening and her flowers.

Left to mourn her passing are her daughter and son-in-law, Charles and Elizabeth Heath of Houston, Texas; seven nieces; and her loving caregivers, Vickie, Rochelle, Sue, Lucy and Nancy.

Preceding her in death were her husband of 65 years, Clarence Douglas; her brother, Paul Fankhouser; and sisters, Frances Fankhouser and Rhodora Demorest.

She will be remembered for her ready laugh, her sense of fun and cheerful disposition.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday, July 7, 2005 at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home 3005 Grand Central Ave. Vienna, WV, with the Rev. Nathan E. Williams officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Parkersburg. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Glen E. Chancellor

Glen Earl Chancellor, 65, of Vienna, WV, passed away Saturday, July 2, 2005, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Parkersburg, WV.

He was born January 13, 1940, in Williamstown, WV, a son of the late Giles Nelson and Leora Grace McFarland Chancellor. Glen worked at Brockway Demuth Glass and was a former vice president of the Flint Glass Workers Union. He was a graduate of Parkersburg High School.

Glen is survived by his wife, Sharon Young Chancellor; one daughter, Kelly Brookover of Parkersburg, WV; two sons, Doug Chancellor of Vienna, WV and Patrick Chancellor of Parkersburg, WV; three grandchildren, Joshua, Alyssa and Sierra Chancellor; and two brothers, William Chancellor of Larkmead, WV and Giles Nelson Chancellor, Jr. of Washington County, Ohio.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Williamson.

Funeral services will be 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 5, 2005 at Lambert-Tatman Funeral, 3005 Grand Central Ave. Vienna, WV, with Dr. Larry D. Hooper officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until time of services Tuesday at the funeral home.

Alice K. Mahaffey

Alice Kathleen Mahaffey, 86, of Parkersburg, WV, passed way Thursday, June 30, 2005, at her residence.

She was born April 2, 1919, in Belleville, WV, a daughter of the late David W. and Mary Sellers Sams. Alice was a homemaker, a member of the Gihon United Methodist Church and a Sunday School teacher. She was a Red Cross volunteer for over 25 years and a member for over 50 years of the CEOS.

She is survived by her husband, Robert L. Mahaffey of Parkersburg, WV; two sons, Robert L. Mahaffey, Jr. of Spartanburg, S.C., and James B. Mahaffey of Parkersburg, WV; a daughter, Ruth Ann Shinn of Morgantown; four grandchildren, Joshua R. Shinn, Katy M. Shinn, Andrew D. Mahaffey and Erin E. Mahaffey; three sisters, Dorothy Smith, Lucille Mahaffey and Pauline Bolin; three brothers, Charles, Reynard and Clarence Sams.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mary Helen Mahaffey; brothers, Robert, Floyd, John Leonard, Richard and Blaine Sams.

Services will be 3:00 p.m. Saturday, July 2, 2005 at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home 2333 Pike St. Parkersburg, WV, with the Rev. Jim Eakle officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen South Cemetery. Friends may call from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday and one hour prior to service Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorial may be sent to Housecalls-Hospice or the Red Cross.

Earl R. Schott

Earl R. Schott, age 82, of Parkersburg, WV, passed away June 28, 2005 at the home of his daughter Jane Sims of Belpre, Ohio.

He was born April 5, 1923 in Kanawha County, WV, a son of the late Henry A. and Goldendene Hopkins Schott.

Earl graduated from Parkersburg High School and Mountain State College; was retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a clerk; and was a lifelong member of the North Parkersburg Baptist Church. He served in the United States Navy from 1941-1944 during WW II both in the Atlantic and Pacific areas. Earl was honorably discharged when he received disabling injuries in action.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth J. Price Schott; two sons, Daniel Schott of Parkersburg, WV and Edward Schott of Salisbury, MD; one daughter, Jane Sims of Belpre, Ohio; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren; four brothers, Henry Schott of Lubeck, WV, Carl, Jim and Bob Schott all of Vienna, WV; three sisters, Angelia O'Rear of Spartensburg, SC, Lois Shuman and Naomi Keller both of Vienna, WV; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and George Schott.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 1, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 3005 Grand Central Ave. Vienna, WV, with Rev. Don Loudermilk officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen North Cemetery, Parkersburg, WV. Friends may call home 6-8 p.m. on Thursday.
