Jerry Lee Starlin

Jerry Lee Starlin, 40, of Groveport, Ohio, formerly of Little Hocking, Ohio, passed away Oct. 15, 2008, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va.

He was born in Parkersburg, W.Va., on Sept. 12, 1968, a son of Harley K. and Betty J. Watson Starlin of Little Hocking.

Jerry was employed for over 10 years with the Eastland Career Center in Columbus, Ohio. He was a member of TKE Fraternity and the Porterfield Baptist Church. Jerry enjoyed the Ohio State Buckeyes, motorcycling, hunting, music, playing guitar and eating out "good food and friends."

In addition to his parents, he is survived by one sister, Jill Starlin and fiance, Joe Dennis, of Vincent, Ohio; one niece, Cassie Dennis of Vincent; Ohio, aunts and uncles, Jim and Francis Starlin, Mary and Andy Grayson, Sam and Sharon Watson, Mary Putnam and Toni Shutts; close friends, Dylan, Joe, Josh, Scott, Aaron, Craig and Melvin; and his second family, friends and co-workers.

He was preceded in death by his baby sister, Brenda Diane Starlin; and grandparents, Dwight and Delma Starlin and Melvin and Eleanor Watson.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008 at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 1305 Washington Blvd, Belpre, Ohio with Pastor Mark Eaton officiating. Burial will follow at the Rockland Cemetery in Belpre, Ohio. The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Friday and until time of services Saturday at the funeral home.

Nelma K. Byrd Stephens

Nelma K. Byrd Stephens, 88, of Vienna, W.Va., passed away Oct. 9, 2008, at the Arbors at Marietta, Ohio.

She was born Oct. 23, 1919 in Wood County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Robert and Martha Bartlett Byrd. Nelma had previously worked for the Wood County Board of Education with over 17 years of services and was a life long member of the Church of Christ and a member of the Camden Ave. Church of Christ.

She is survived by her four daughters, Martha Whited (Robert) of Vienna, W.Va., Barbara Davenport (Herman) of Tallahassee, Fla., Kathy Lovette of Knoxville, Tenn., and Debbie Smarr (Jerry) of Montgomery Hill, W.Va.; one son, Douglas Stephens (Connie) of Vienna, W.Va.; one sister, Ruth Fleming (Ernie) of Lubeck, W.Va.; two brothers, John Byrd of Rockport, W.Va. and Ray Byrd (Betty) of Ritchie County, W.Va.; 17 grandchildren, Johnny, Eric, Brian, and Lisa Stephens, Heather Mixson, Robin Strauss, Matthew Whited, David Thornburg and Carl Thornburg, Jr., Stephanie Grove, Christopher, Melissa, and Shana Lovette, Angie DeVore, Katie Smith and Mike and Farah Smarr; and 22 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde E. Stephens; one sister; and several brothers.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, 2008 at the Camden Ave. Church of Christ with Dana Slingluff officiating. Interment will follow at the Parkersburg Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Sunday at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 3005 Grand Central Ave., Vienna, W.Va. and Monday one hour prior to the services at the church.

Ruth Elmer Dehner

Ruth Elma Dehner, 70, of Belpre, Ohio passed away Wednesday, October 15, 2008.

She was born January 21, 1938 in Norwalk, Ohio, a daughter of the late Ira Albert and Evelyn Marie Horn Welch. Ruth was a homemaker and enjoyed quilting. She was a member of the Jehovah's Witness.

Surviving is her husband, James F. Dehner, Sr.; one son, Michael D. Kenney of Cutler, Ohio; three daughters, Linda (Susie) Heiss, Sarah F. Delong, and Cherie J. Wittekind all of Belpre, Ohio; three sisters, Jane Stump of Wellington, Ohio, Joan Leimeister of Huron, Ohio, and Rena Catlin of Newark, Ohio; sixteen grandchildren; and twenty-six great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Dick Welch.

There will be no visitation or services. Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 1305 Washington Blvd. Belpre, Ohio.

Hazel C. Carpenter

Hazel C. Carpenter, 83, of Parkersburg, W.Va., passed away October 13, 2008 at Camden Clark Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Jackson County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Elmas Rardin and Dola Milhoan. She worked at Terry's Dairy King, was a homemaker and enjoyed bowling, reading, animals and her family.

She is survived by two daughters, Judy Carpenter (Bud) McPherson of Washington, W.Va., Jo Ann (David) Gregg of Mineral Wells, W.Va.; 4 sons, Jay Carpenter of Parkersburg, W.Va., Jim (Carla) Carpenter of Little Hocking, Ohio, Charles 'Chuck' (Shiela) Carpenter of Bellville, W.Va., and Mike Carpenter of Beaufort, SC; two sisters, Mari Wallace of Vienna, W.Va. and Pam Stewart of Murraysville, W.Va.; six grandchildren, Chris Carpenter, Aubrie Carpenter, Cera Carpenter, Steven McPherson, Bryan McPherson and Desirae Gregg; two great-grandchildren, Christopher Carpenter and Justun Carpenter; special aunt, Gladys Melrose of Washington, W.Va; and her dogs, Pepper and Jasper.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, Orlando J. Carpenter in 1979, whom she married in 1950.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17, 2008 at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 2333 Pike St. Parkersburg, W.Va. with Pastor Bill Ahart officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens. Family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.on Friday at the funeral home.

H. R. "Pappy" Holbert

H. R. "Pappy" Holbert, 94, of Parkersburg, W.Va. passed away Oct. 14, 2008, at Eagle Pointe.

He was born in Nicholas County, W.Va., a son of the late Franklin N. and Sara A. Bollinger Holbert.

He retired from Union Carbide after 25 years of service, was a lifetime member of South Parkersburg United Methodist Church where he had taught Sunday School, served on the Board of Trustees and the Pastor Parish Committee. He was known by children and adults as the "Candy Man."

He is survived by one daughter, Beverly Adams and husband, Carman, of Parkersburg, W.Va.; one grandson, Mark A. Adams and wife, Valma; five great-grandchildren, Andrea and Brian Williams, Nikki and Mark Full, Mark Adams II, Rhonda and J.D. Reed, Michael and Keri Wilburn; nine great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Mildred Holbert; an infant son; three brothers; and two sisters.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008 at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 2333 Pike St. Parkersburg, W.Va., with the Rev. Rick Brown and the Rev. Phil Prunty officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen North Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Eagle Pointe nurses and staff during his short stay and two special nurses from Gentiva, Carla Farnsworth and Robin Wilson.

Hollis Clinton Summers

Hollis Clinton Summers, 76, of Parkersburg, W.Va., died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, at Eagle Pointe Nursing Facility from complications of Alzheimers Disease.

Hollis was born in Licking County, Ohio, on Feb. 27, 1932. He was the son of the late Frank and Esther Summers. He graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1950. Hollis served in the Air Force from July 1950 to April 1954. He retired after 35 years of service from DuPont. Hollis loved fishing, camping and gardening. He was a former member of the American Legion Post 15 of Parkersburg.

He was married to the late Mrs. Sue Summers in 1954. They had four children, Doug Summers and wife, Judy, of Walnut Cove, N.C., Diane Garvey and husband, Jeff, of Parkersburg, Steve Summers and wife, Tami, also of Parkersburg, and Sheri Summers and friend, Marsha Dotson, of Pennsboro, W.Va. They have 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his children and grandchildren; his brother, Delbert (Karen) Summers of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; three sisters, Carol Summers of Utica, Ohio, and Shirley Johnson and Betty Hempfield (Ron), both of Mt. Vernon, Ohio; two sisters-in-law, JoAnne Golden of Vienna, W.Va. and Barbara Bever of Chandler, Ariz.; and one aunt, Julia Jenkins of Florida.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years in 2003; one brother, Bob Summers; and one sister, Dorothy Goff.

At his request, his body has been donated to the W.Va. Gift Registry of Morgantown, W.Va. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 3005 Grand Central Ave., Vienna, with the Rev. Norman Butler officiating. Graveside services will be at a later date at the convenience of the family.

He spent the last three-and-a-half years on Augustas Cottage Alzheimers Unit at Eagle Pointe Nursing Facility.

Memorial contributions may be made to Augustas Cottage, 1600 27th St., Parkersburg, or the Alzheimers Association. Envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Augustas Cottage and Eagle Pointe for the love and care given to him during his stay.

Ross H. Mellinger

Ross H. Mellinger, 94, of Parkersburg, passed away October 12 2008.

He was born December 10 1913 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Enos and Mary (Barr) Mellinger. As a youngster, he and his family moved from their Mennonite community in rural Lancaster County to Philadelphia, where he attended public schools, graduating in 1931.

Ross was a Penn State University Forestry student and moved to West Virginia in 1934 to work with the Soil Erosion Service at Spencer. Shortly thereafter, he joined President Roosevelt's newly formed Civilian Conservation Corps. In announcing the formation of the Corps, FDR told the nation, 'I propose to create a Civilian Conservation Corps to be used in simple work; more important, however, than the material gains will be the moral and spiritual value of such work.' Ross' lessons and endeavors in the CCC camps set him on a course of faithful, distinguishable, honorable, and professional service to his state and country as he relentlessly pursued a career in Soil Conservation and Forestry.

He retired in 1969 from the United States Department of Agriculture as Woodland Conservationist for West Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware. Often times he credited the Civilian Conservation Corps with launching his career, Throughout his service, he received many awards, including: the Governor's Conservation Award for Forestry; the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Superior Service Award; Outstanding Performance Award and Photo Series Award. He was an accomplished writer and contributed to many state and national forestry publications throughout his career. He was a past board member of the West Virginia Board of Registration for Foresters and served as Secretary for five years. For several years following his retirement, he provided services as a consulting forester in the Parkersburg area. In 1997, Ross was inducted into the West Virginia Agriculture and Forestry Hall of Fame. His knowledge of the woods and fields was unsurpassed and admired by all who knew him. He inspired many to engage in similar work and he set the standard for professional service. His contributions will be forever known and remembered. Ross was an Eagle Scout, a member of Wetzel Lodge No. 39 Ancient Free and Accepted Masons in New Martinsville and a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason. He loved the outdoors and he loved West Virginia, but above all else, he loved his family. He will always be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

Surviving are his loving wife of seventy-three years, Madge; his children, Dorothy Jean Oliver of Parkersburg, Sharon Lee Colombo and husband Jimmy also of Parkersburg, and John Ross Mellinger and wife Carolyn of Millwood WV; nine grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lee.

Funeral services will be 1PM Wednesday October 15 2008 at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 400 Green St., Parkersburg, with Pastor Larry Dale officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery with Masonic graveside rites. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8PM on Tuesday October 14 2008 at the funeral home.

Diane L. Johnson

Diane L. Johnson, 59, of Mineral Wells WV, passed away Sunday October 12 2008 at her residence following an extended illness. She was born December 12 1948 in Wood County, WV, a daughter of the late Roy and Glenna Carpenter.

Diane was retired after owning and operating her own stores throughout her adult life. She was a member of the Roy Johnson American Legion Post 104, and also a member of the Celebration of Life Center.

She is survived by two sons; Bruce Johnson of Mineral Wells WV and Stacy Johnson of Los Angeles CA; one amazing niece, Toni Radloff of Fennville MI; one brother, Scott Amos; one sister, Donna Owens; and three grandchildren, Joshua Taylor Johnson and Alexis Johnson, and Camron Haverty.

There will be no visitation or services. Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Lambert-Tatman Funeral and Cremation Services, 2333 Pike St., south Parkersburg.

Lloyd P. 'Boone' Hall

Lloyd P. 'Boone' Hall, 65, of Parkersburg, died October 10, 2008 at his residence.

He was born at Slate, W.Va., a son of Melba Hall Allman of Parkersburg and the late Earl Hall.

Lloyd retired from Dupont after 32 years of service, loved to go hunting and fishing and enjoyed attending sporting and cheerleading events of his grandchildren Jakeb and Haley who meant the world to him. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles.

He is survived by his wife, Goldine, whom he married September 5, 1970; one son, Brian (Kathleen) Hall of Virginia; one daughter, Ramona (Mark, whom he thought of as a son) Snyder of Belleville, W.Va.; three grandchildren, Allison Hall, Jake Snyder and Haley Snyder; one brother, Herman (Mary) Hall of Mineral Wells, W.Va.; two sisters, Linda Brotosky of Buffalo, W.Va. and June (Brad) Yocum of Little Hocking, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank Dr. J.T. Conner and staff and Housecalls/Hospice.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by step-father, Hubert Allman; one sister, Freda Riel; one brother, Jack Hall; father-in-law, Charles Linch; two brothers-in-law, Roy Riel and Lou Brotosky; a fishing buddy, Willard Vance.

Funeral services will be at 1 PM on Monday at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 2333 Pike St., south Parkersburg with Carl Radcliff officiating. Interment will be at the Evergreen South Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 on Sunday at the funeral home.

Drexel Mowery

Drexel Monroe Mowery, 53, of Vincent, Ohio, passed away Oct. 4, 2008, at his residence.

He was born in Parkersburg, W.Va., a son of the late Drexel M. and Willa Grace Long Mowery. He had worked at Cramer Metals.

Drexel is survived by a sister, Shelly Blind of Vincent, Ohio; and a brother, Bill Mowery of Parkersburg, W.Va.

There will be no visitation or service.

Mamie Anne Knotts

Mamie Anne Thomas Knotts, 80, of Parkersburg, W.Va., died on the Feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, Oct. 7, 2008, at St. Joseph's Hospital.

She was born on Feb. 28, 1928, in Marietta, Ohio, a daughter of the late William Joseph Eide Thomas and Louise Mary Hebdo Thomas. Mamie attended and was an alumnus of DeSales Heights Academy, Parkersburg, and was a homemaker who specialized in delighting family and friends alike with her Lebanese cuisine. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church since the age of three, where she was a longtime Sacristan and served as a Eucharistic Minister for the sick and infirm. She was a member and past president and vice president of the Rosary Altar Society, a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and a past vice president of the Knights of Columbus Council 594 Ladies Auxiliary.

Surviving are her three children, Stanton C. "Chip" Knotts Jr. (Robin), William K. "Bill" Knotts and Constance L. "Connie" Knotts-Dowler (Brent); one grandson, William T. "Tank" Knotts; one granddaughter, Gretchen A. Dowler; and her special feline friend, "Harvey, " all of Parkersburg; seven very special nieces and nephews of her late sister-in-law, Helen Knotts Archer: Patti, Sue, Jane, Steve, Ann, Tim and Kim; and an extraordinary "son, " Roger D. Nedeff (Linda) of Vienna, W.Va.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Stanton C. "Stan" Knotts, who died on April 20, 1998; two sisters, Mildred M. Thomas and Elizabeth L. Thomas Hazelett; and an infant brother, William Joseph Thomas Jr.

Services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 11, 2008 at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Parkersburg, with the Rev. R. Eric Hall IV officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Carmel Cemetery. Friends may call from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. today and from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Friday at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 400 Green St., Parkersburg, W.Va., with a Rosary Service at 8:00 p.m. Friday.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 532 Market Street, Parkersburg, WV 26101.

Virginia M. Moss

Virginia Marie Moss, age 97, of Parkersburg, W.Va. passed away October 8, 2008 at the Worthington Manor Nursing Facility.

She was born July 26, 1911 in Elkins, W.Va., a daughter of the late Corder H. and Sarah Ellen Bennett Weese. Virginia had previously worked at the American Viscose and was a homemaker. She enjoyed playing cards, crafts, sewing and was a member of the First Christian Church.

She is survived by two sons, Jack M Moss and wife Betty of Parkersburg, W.Va. and James E. Moss and wife Ruth of Bonita Springs, Fla.; one daughter, Judith M. Airhart and husband Bill of Wingate, NC.; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and numerous cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John M. Moss in 1986; one daughter, Dixie Lee Sartor; and one brother, Virgil O. Weese.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 11, 2008 at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 400 Green St. Parkersburg, W.Va. with Rev. Sanford W. Downs officiating. Interment will follow at the Evergreen North Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services Saturday at the funeral home.
