Deloris M. Nichols

Deloris M. "Toots" Nichols, 77, of Cape Coral, Fla., formally of Vienna, W.Va., passed away Feb. 2, 2009, at the Cape Coral Hospital.

She was born Oct. 28, 1931, in Parkersburg, W.Va., a daughter of the late Harry B. and Mina Godfrey Tallhamer. Deloris had previously worked for Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Parkersburg for 20 years. She attended the Broadway Baptist Church and enjoyed ceramics and cooking.

Surviving is her husband, Frank D. Nichols; one son and his wife, Mark J. and Teresa Nichols of Cape Coral, Fla.; two brothers and their wives, Landis and Janet Tallhamer of Parkersburg, W.Va., and Gerald and Carol Tallhamer of Washington, W.Va.; two sisters, Mary Walton of Davisville, W.Va., and Judith Bassett of Knightdale, N.C.; her mother-in-law, Mollie Nichols of Cape Coral, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Deloris was preceded in death by one sister, Norma Fox.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, Feb. 6, 2009 at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home 3005 Grand Central Ave. Vienna, W.Va., with Pastor Scott Sears officiating. Interment will follow at the Sunset Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Dorothy L. Tucker

Dorothy Louise Fought Tucker, 85, of Parkersburg, passed away on Feb. 3, 2009 at Camden Clark Memorial Hospital.

She was born Jan. 29, 1924, a daughter of the late Willie and Ruby L. Owens Fought, in Newark, W.Va.

Dorothy retired after 35 years of service from O'Ames in the Assembly Dept., after retirement she worked at Dils Department Store until it closed, she volunteered for Meals On Wheels and attended every Thursday night at the high rise to listen to her brother Ray play music. She enjoyed needlepoint and loved spending time with her twin great-niece and nephew. She was a member of the South Parkersburg Baptist Church where she spent many hours volunteering.

She is survived by two brothers, Ray E. (Donna J.) Fought and Floyd (Betty L.) Fought, both of Parkersburg; five nephews, Mark W. Fought of Blacksburg, VA, David L. Fought of Parkersburg, Michael J. Fought of West Grove, PA, Robert L. Fought Jr. of Parkersburg, Rick L. Fought of Conway, AZ; three nieces, Linda J. Anderson of Galatin, TN, Sue Ellen Ashwood, of Reynoldsburg, OH and Terry Taylor of Parkersburg.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jessie J. Tucker; two brothers Robert L. Fought and Earl W. Fought.

Funeral service will be on Friday, Feb.6, at 1:00 p.m. at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Pike St., south Parkersburg with Pastor Joe Busch and Seth officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen South Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5, at the funeral home.

Robert D. Shoup

Robert D. 'Bob' Shoup, 79 of Parkersburg, W.Va., passed away January 31, 2009 at his residence.

He was born June 14, 1929 in Butler Township, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Harley and Mabel Irene Bowser Shoup. Bob was retired from LTV Corp., steel mill in Cleveland, Ohio where he was a crane operator.

He is survived by his three daughters, Pat Kostura of Maple Heights, Ohio, Jenny Murnahan of Parkersburg, W.Va. and Penny Zarobski of Maple Heights, Ohio; five grandchildren, Tina Pierces, Bob Williams, Walter Zarobski, Cindy Starcher, and Jason Zarobski; and six great-grandchildren, Siera, Stephanie, Jessica, Tiffany, Destiny, and Brooke.

In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Shoup; four brothers; and two sisters.

Cremation arrangements have been entrusted with the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 400 Green St. Parkersburg, W.Va.

Garnett Hinton Harpold Wilson

Garnett Hinton Harpold Wilson, Belpre, Ohio, left us on Feb. 2, 2009, to go home to be with the Lord and reunited with her family, some she never met.

She was born Nov. 26, 1929, in Constitution, Ohio, to the late Harry and Flora Cassidy Hinton.

Garnett lived most of her life in Belpre, Ohio and worked at the Blue Moon Restaurant, Vera's Lunch and the Crystal Soda Shoppe. But her true love was babysitting, which she did for more than 60 years.

Surviving are her children, Florena 'Flo' Harpold; Rocky Harpold and his wife, Sandy, and Bill 'B.J.' Harpold and his wife, Cathy, all of Belpre, Ohio; two grandchildren, Miracle Lockhart and her husband, Jonah and Bryan Harpold and his wife, Cari of Belpre, Ohio; four great-grandchildren, Tristen, Jaiton and Paige Lockhart and Trista Harpold all of Belpre, Ohio. She is also survived by two 'adopted' daughters, Polly Teets of Elkhart, Ind., and Loretta Matheny of Belpre, Ohio; and Garnett's first husband, James Harpold of Florida.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by seven brothers; five sisters; and her second husband, William Wilson in 1991.

Services will be 7:00 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009 at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 1305 Washington Blvd. Belpre, Ohio, with Rev. Paul McGuire officiating. The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation or the Belpre Volunteer Fire Dept. Envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.

Robert L. Hysell Sr.

Robert L. Hysell Sr., 77, of Parkersburg, passed away Jan. 30, 2009, at the Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.

He was born Oct. 16, 1931, in Wayne Co., WV, a son of the late William R. and Lula Mae Jarrell Hysell.

Robert was formerly employed with Grissell Packing and enjoyed auctions. He was a very decorated US Army veteran, receiving two Purple Hearts, The Presidential Korean Service Medal, and also eight Medal Battle Stars, throughout his military career from the years of 1948 until 1954.

He is survived by his wife, Janet R. Newlon Hysell of Parkersburg; two daughters, Jacqueline L. Harggest of Huntington and Briana R. Hysell of Parkersburg; three sons, Donald J., Brian C. (Carol), and Robert J. Hysell Jr. (Christina), all of Parkersburg; two stepdaughters, April Williams and Lowedda Bartimus, both of Parkersburg; one stepson, David Fields, also of Parkersburg; one sister, Evelyn Jean Hogsett of Barboursville WV; five brothers, Russell Hysell of Barboursville WV, Kenny and Lawrence Hysell, both of South Point OH, and Ralph and Johnny Hysell, both of Huntington; a host of neices, nephews, and grandchildren; and one great-grandson, Jordan K. Fields of Parkersburg.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded by one sister, Virginia Mae Barrett; and one son, Jason B. Hysell.

Funeral services will be 1PM Monday, February 2, 2009, at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 2333 Pike St., south Parkersburg, with Mr. Jim Lynch officiating and full military rites conducted by American Legion Post 15 of Parkersburg. Private interment will follow at Evergreen South Cemetery. The family will recieve friends from 11AM until time of services on Monday at the funeral home.

Keith A. Summers

Keith A. Summers, 85, of Belpre, Ohio, passed away Jan. 25, 2009, at his residence.

He was born May 7, 1923, in Satanta, Kan., a son of Albert and Cenith Summers. He was a World War II veteran of the Army Air Corps and a member of the VFW John S. Stewart Post 1, Denver, Colo., for over 40 years. He retired from Ashland Oil as a plant manager, was a rock collector and loved to yard sale.

He is survived by two daughters, Marcia Reid of Trenton, Mo., and Phyllis Harmon of Sunbury, N.C.; two brothers, Evan (Charlotte) Summers of Phoenix, Ariz., and Ross (Betty Lou) Summers of Fort Washington, Md.; five grandchildren, Karen (Tom) Harding of Ridgeway, Mo., Kimberly Cottrell of Trenton, Mo., Bernard N. (Faye) Harmon Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va., Susan Harmon of Harrisonburg, Va., and Justin Harmon of Sunbury, N.C.; three great-grandchildren, Jacob, Monica and Jessica; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews, Frank and Mark Summers, Alan Cathcart, Patty Purvis and Denise Segreti.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Summers in December 2008; a sister, Ruth Cathcart; a brother, Frank Summers; and one great-great-grandson, Quinlan Cottrell.

Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home 1305 Washington Blvd. Belpre, Ohio.

Jane Marshall

Jane Marshall, 59, of Belpre, Ohio passed away on Jan. 25, 2009, at Marietta Memorial Hospital.

Jane was born on March 10, 1949, in Philippi, W.Va., a daughter of the late Robert and Ethel Martini Newman.

She was a homemaker, a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in Marietta and a member of the Lighthouse Temple Church in Belpre.

She is survived by two daughters, Tracey Wilhelm (Greg) of Belpre, Ohio and Terry Miller of Florida; three sons, Clayton Hunt (Melissa), and Gary Miller (Angie) all of Belpre, Ohio and Robert Miller of Reno, Ohio; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Tammy Austin of Bellington, W.Va.; one brother, Stanley Newman of Philippi, W.Va.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her longtime companion, Larry L. Taylor Sr.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009 at the Barnett Ridge Church near Belpre with the Rev. Vernon Reams officiating. Burial will be at the Barnett Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 1305 Washington Boulevard, Belpre, Ohio and one hour prior to the services Thursday at the church.

Jerry Graham Jr.

Jerry Graham Jr., 77, of Parkersburg, W.Va., passed away on January 26, 2009 at the Willows Center, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

He was born December 19, 1931, a son of Jerry Robert Graham Sr. and Clara Snyder Graham in Millwood, W.Va.

Jerry retired from Union Carbide/Elkem Metals after 33 years of service. He then started his second career as a Head Start Bus Driver and Security Guard. He enjoyed basketball, camping, bowling, hunting, practical jokes and coached baseball. He volunteered for Camden Clark Memorial Hospital for several years. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was very involved. He also supported Red Cross as often as he could.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Lu M. Bollinger Graham; four daughters, Robin (Randy) Hewitt of Kanawha, W.Va., Cheryl (Freddy) Curry of Myrtle Beach, SC, Kayla Graham of Parkersburg, and Karen Anne (Michael) Schmidt of Pasadena, MD; four sons, Keith (Eileen) Graham of Palm Beach, FL, Shawn Graham and fiancé Angie Helmick, Doug (Jamie) Graham, and Chad (Jacqueline Siers) Graham all of Parkersburg; two brothers, Doug (Lannie) Graham of Lapine, AL, and Alan (Kay) Graham of Syracuse, OH; 19 grandchildren; and 6 great-great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Eileen Goodwin Graham, two brothers, John E. and Homer Robert Graham; one sister, Ora Mae 'Sis' Bacon; two infant sisters, Elizabeth and Udell; one infant brother, Raymond Graham; two great-granddaughters, Breanna Faith Hewitt and Amber Leann Hutchinson.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 30, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 2515 Capitol Dr, south Parkersburg, with Bishop Mark Long officiating and Jim Robrecht conducting.. Interment will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens. Family will receive friends from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 29 at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Pike St., south Parkersburg, and from 9:00 a.m. until time of service on Friday at the church.

Dr. William Joseph Swearingen

William Joseph Swearingen, 81, of Little Hocking Ohio, passed away on January 25, 2009, at the Eagle Pointe Nursing Facility.

Bill was born on August 13, 1927, in Walker, W.Va., to Beryl Spurgeon and W.A. (Andy) Swearingen. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh Dental School and practiced dentistry in Parkersburg for fifty-one years. He served as President of the Blennerhassett Dental Society and was also a local representative to the Executive Council of the West Virginia State Dental Association.

Dr. Swearingen also served as the President of the Board of Wood County Crippled Children and Adults and was a member of the West Virginia Board of Crippled Children and Adults.

His love of horses led him to serve as the President of the Ohio Arabian Horse Association. His duties for the association included managing the Annual Buckeye All Arabian Horse Show in Columbus, Ohio, which was the third largest Arabian Horse Show in the country. Bill also served as manager of the National Arabian Horse Show in Louisville, Kentucky. He was involved at the state and local level as a horse show judge and served as member of the Barlow Fair Board and was also a Washington county 4-H Club Advisor, also having served as a scoutmaster for Troop 10 of Parkersburg.

Bill was a member of the Warren Local School Board, also serving as the organizations President. He was on the Board of Directors of the Historic Smoot Theatre and also the co-founder and first president of the Jazz Arts Group of the Mid-Ohio Valley.

He was also a veteran of the US Navy, and was a member and former lay reader of the Trinity Episcopal Church.

Surviving is one son, Doug Swearingen and wife, Diane of Vienna, W.Va; two daughters, Libby Arnold and husband, Tom of Little Hocking, Ohio and Sally Thomas, also of Little Hocking, Ohio; six grandchildren, Jason Swearingen and wife, Alicia, Joey Swearingen, Kyle Thomas, and Casey, Sam, and Drew Arnold; two brothers, Andy Swearingen (Laura Jean) of Parkersburg, W.Va. and Jim Swearingen (Suzanne) of Vienna, W.Va.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by wife, Anne Douglass Swearingen in 2008; and one son, William Joseph Swearingen, Jr.

The family has honored Bill's requests to be cremated and would like to invite family and friends to a memorial service, Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009 at 2:00 p.m., at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 1305 Washington Blvd. Belpre, Ohio, with The Rev. Arthur L. Bennett III officiating. An invitation is extended to you by the family to attend the reception for a time of fellowship at the Lambert-Tatman Family Center at the funeral home. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Historic Smoot Theatre, 213 Fifth Street, Parkersburg, WV, 26101, or the Little Hocking Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 213, Little Hocking, OH, 45742.

Ruth Louise Deem

Ruth Louise Deem, 83, of Parkersburg, W.Va., passed away Jan. 25, 2009, at St. Joseph's Hospital.

She was born Nov. 7, 1925, in Deerwalk, W.Va., a daughter of the late Ralph Parker and Helen Shaffer Reese. Ruth was a homemaker and formerly worked at Johns Manville in Vienna, W.Va. She was a member of The First Church of The Nazarene in Parkersburg. Ruth loved and was very devoted to her family. She enjoyed reading, baking, gardening and watching the birds.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Ray Deem; two sons, David Deem (Fran) and the Rev. Daniel Deem (Judy), all of Parkersburg, W.Va.; four daughters, Debbie Fouse (Charlie), Marilyn Wine (John) and Darlene Willis (Gary), all of Walker, W.Va., and Carolyn Jacobson (Terry) of Parkersburg, W.Va.; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gladys Marshall of Parkersburg, W.Va. and Bessie Beckner (Paul) of Walker; W.Va., a half-sister, Connie Armistead (Charles) of Elkview, W.Va.; one brother, Jim Reese (Marilyn) of Parkersburg, W.Va.; a daughter-in-law, Terry Deem of Murphytown, W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Dale and Darrell Deem; four sisters, Ethel Reese, Mildred Goldsmith, Thelma McCaleb and Opal Reese; one half-sister, Jackie Morehead; a brother, Lewis (Dick) Reese; and a sister-in-law, Loretta Reese.

Funeral services for Mrs. Deem will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesda, Jan. 28, 2009 at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 2333Pike Street, Parkersburg, W.Va., with the Rev. Keith Hostutler officiating. Burial will follow in the Deem-Wilson Cemetery at Goose Creek. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Harley J. Shuck

Harley J. Shuck, 84, passed away Jan. 25, 2009, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.

He was a veteran, having proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was retired from the Army Corps of Engineers following 34 years of service. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and was an active member of several church groups including the United Methodist Men and Worship Team.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Jean Shuck; two daughters, Jane Somerville (Gary) of Williamstown, W.Va., and Deborah Mason of Cambridge, Ohio; one brother, Kelsey Shuck (Mildred) of Marietta, Ohio; two sisters, Peggy Pickrell (Charles) of Belleville, W.Va., and Eva Null of Parkersburg, W.Va.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; a mother-in-law; one brother-in-law; three sisters-in-law; and many, many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harley A. and Mary J. Reynolds Shuck; and four sisters, Sadie Valentine, Agnes Chevront, Audra Jonas and Veda Jean Maynard.

He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather and will be sadly missed by his family.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009 at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 2333 Pike St., Parkersburg, W.Va., with the Rev. Shari Stilgenbauer officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens with military graveside rites by American Legion Post 15 Parkersburg. Friends may call from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Kenneth D. Newton

Kenneth Dallas Newton, age 89, of Parkersburg and currently a resident of The Inn at Marietta, was called home to his Lord and Savior surrounded by his family January 23, 2009 at the Marietta Care and Rehab Center.

He was born April 23, 1919 in Morgan Co. near Chesterhill, Ohio, a son of the late Charles Wesley and Rosa Belle Mosier Newton. Kenneth attended Morgan Co. local schools and grew up in the hard depression times learning to hunt, fish, trap and live off the land along with his family on their Goshen Run Farm. He also grew to have a passion for mechanics and motorized vehicles that would carry him throughout his life.

He was called into service in October of 1941 into the U.S. Army and served in Europe and other areas during WW II. He was captured by General Rommel's forces in Tunisia, North Africa and was a Prisoner of War in three stalags and a work farm in Poland on the Baltic Sea for 26 months, returning home in August of 1945.

After his service years he had worked at the Parkersburg Rig and Reel, and also at Chittum Buick auto dealership, Parkersburg, as a mechanic and retired from the Wood Co. Board of Education Bus Garage. He was a member of the Baptist Temple Parkersburg.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Beulah 'Irene' Dimmick Newton; two sons Robert L. Newton of Parkersburg and Darryl E Newton and his wife Roberta of Parkersburg; two granddaughters, Mariah Caltrider and her husband, Mark, of Parkersburg, and Brooke Newton, of the Edmonds, WA; three sisters, Ola McInturf of Pataskala, Oh.; Ulda Woodyard of Stockport, Oh., and Wilda Davis and her husband, Charles, of Columbus, Oh.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers, George, Charles, and Earl Newton; and three sisters, Rhoda Newton, Sylvia Carney and Clara Howard, and one infant sibling.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, Jan. 26, at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 2333 Pike St., south Parkersburg with Pastor Larry Dale officiating. Burial will follow at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery with full military rites by American Legion Post 15. Visitation will be 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 25, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the American Red Cross, 220 - 8th St., Parkersburg, WV 26101.
