Ceola Kay Cantley

Ceola Kay Cantley, 59, of Vienna, W.Va., passed away December 8, 2009, at her residence following a sudden illness.

She was born May 25, 1950, in Parkersburg, W.Va., a daughter of the late Lloyd Elmore Welch and Dorothy Pearl Hoover Welch of Davisville, W.Va.

Mrs. Cantley was a class of 1969 graduate of Parkersburg High School. She was a homemaker and also a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church of Vienna.

She is survived by her husband, Norman Cantley; one sister, Mona Rae Jenkins and husband Robert of Vienna, W.Va.; two brothers, Kenneth Wayne Welch and wife Sharon of Walker, W.Va., and Danny K. Welch of Clarksburg, W.Va.; two nieces and nephews; two grand-nieces; and four grand-nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11AM Friday, December 11, 2009, at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 3005 Grand Central Ave., Vienna, W.Va., with Pastor Jon Lands officiating. Interment will follow at the Evergreen North Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8PM on Thursday, December 10, 2009, at the funeral home.

Richard L. "Dick" Morgan

Richard L. 'Dick' Morgan, 69, of Marietta, Ohio, formerly of Waterford, Ohio passed away December 7, 2009 at OSU Medical Center after an extended illness.

He was born February 14, 1940 at Little Hocking, Ohio, a son of the late Doris Morgan Newhart.

Dick was a 1958 graduate of Marietta High School. He was a harness race horse trainer and driver, racing horses in Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

He is survived by two sons, Steve Morgan and wife, Becky, of South Holland, Illinois and David Morgan and wife, Amy, of Marietta, Ohio; the mother of his children, Anne Bolin Morgan of Marietta, Ohio; one brother, Rodney Newhart and wife, Anita, of Marietta, Ohio; one sister, Rhonda Newhart of Williamstown, W.Va.; and four grandchildren, Nathan, Collin, Haylee and Justin.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a son, Paul R. Morgan; his second wife, Sedonia Spencer Morgan; and one brother, Ron Newhart.

Honoring his wishes, his body was donated to the Ohio University Willed Body Program. There will be no services or visitation. A private gathering of remembrance will be held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements entrusted to the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 1305 Washington Boulevard, Belpre, Ohio.

Brian E. Starkey

Brian E. Starkey, 58, of Vienna, W.Va., went to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 5, 2009, after a long and very courageous battle with cancer.

Brian was born in Parkersburg, W.Va., a son of the late Charles F. Starkey Jr. and Maxine Heinselman Starkey.

He was a 1974 graduate of the WVU School of Journalism with a BS degree. After graduation, he followed his father in the family business, Starkey Soft Water, Inc., where he worked until his illness. Church was a big part of Brian's life. He was a past deacon at the 36th Street Church of Christ of Vienna, W.Va., where he was loved by all and did many good works.

He is survived by his loving family, including his wife, Barbara C. 'Babs' Starkey; two daughters, Shelley Starkey and Shannon Starkey-Emrick; one grandson, Caleb Emrick; step-mother, Helen Starkey Sweeney; many cousins, aunts, and uncles; and a host of friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his infant son, Sean Michael Starkey; and one brother, Fred Starkey III.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11AM Wednesday, December 9, 2009, at the 36th Street Church of Christ, Vienna, W.Va., with Minister Tom Butterfield, Mark Mason, and Chris Mullins officiating. Interment will follow at the Evergreen North Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-8PM on Tuesday, December 8, 2009, at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 3006 Grand Central Ave., Vienna, W.Va.

The family would like to extend a thank you to all who had a part in his care and were wonderful at a very difficult time in their lives, those including; Dr. Nik Shah and staff, the oncology nurses of Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, and Brian's caregivers and family friends, Jody Boone and Martha Peters.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Pro-Life Women's Solutions Center. Envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.

Bernice L. Sparks

Bernice Louise Sparks, 81, of Waverly, W.Va., passed away Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, at St. Joseph's Hospital.

She was born June 16, 1928, in Pleasants County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Grover Cleveland and Flossie Adaline Cronin Sparks.

Bernice had previously worked for Yonkers Manufacturing and retired from Hills Department Store. She was a member of the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church; a member of the Pleasant Hill CEOS; and enjoyed reading and quilting.

She is survived by her daughter, Karen Patterson and husband, Victor, of Waverly, W.Va.; two grandchildren, Tony Patterson of Parkersburg, W.Va. and Vicki Patterson of Waverly, W.Va.; three great-grandchildren, Gabriel and Heaven Clay and Hunter Greathouse; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Angela Patterson Greathouse; three brothers, Clifford, Cecil and Clayton Sparks; and one sister, Katherine Underwood.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 400 Green Street, Parkersburg, W.Va., with the Rev. Tom McQuain, the Rev. Doug Guinn and the Rev. Lisa Taylor officiating. Interment will follow at the German Lutheran Cemetery, Deerwalk, W.Va.. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, at the funeral home.

Jackie Harp Monroe

Jackie Harp Monroe, 86, of Parkersburg, W.Va., passed away on Friday, December 4, 2009, at St. Joseph's Hospital.

She was born July 16, 1923, in Parkersburg, a daughter of the late Benjamen Franklin and Emma Alice Morris Tavenner.

Jackie was a crossing guard and a waitress at South Hills Golf Course. She was an avid bingo player and enjoyed playing poker with her friends. She attended Trinity United Methodist Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Jackie 'Inky' Barnett and husband Al, of Parkersburg, and Becky Anderson of Mineral Wells, W.Va.; two sons, Donald Morehead and wife Diana of Parkersburg, and Andy 'Stoney' Rawson and wife Connie, of Reedsville, Ohio; fourteen grandchildren; twenty two great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her former husband of 42 years, William E. Harp; three sisters; and one brother.

Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, December 7, at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Pike St., south Parkersburg, with Pastor Lester Morgan officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.

Gladys I. Moore

Gladys I. Moore, 77, of Parkersburg passed away on Dec. 2, 2009, at Summit Acres Nursing Home in Caldwell, Ohio.

There will be no visitation or services.

Cremation has been entrusted to Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Pike St., south Parkersburg, with burial in New England Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Viola "Vi" Garland

Viola 'Vi' Garland, 87, of Parkersburg, W.Va., died Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at Parkersburg Care and Rehab Center with friends and family by her side.

She was born March 12, 1922, in Castle Gate, Utah, daughter of the late George and Eva Psathas, of Charleston, W.Va.

She attended All Saints Parochial School in Weirton, W.Va and Charleston School of Commerce in Charleston, W.Va. She was employed by Stone & Thomas in the Credit Department and The Charleston Gazette in the Accounting Department before moving to Parkersburg in 1977. She was a member of The Lakeview Estates Social Club and Parkersburg Women's Club. She was a member of the St. John Greek Orthodox Church, Charleston, W.Va.

Vi enjoyed cooking and sharing her tasty baked dishes and special desserts with friends and family. She also remembered her friends and family with cards on their special occasions and was known by all for her thoughtfulness and generosity.

She is survived by her daughter, Eve Bradford and husband, Charles, of Parkersburg, W.Va.; three sons, George Manis and wife, Barbara, of Layton, Utah, David H. Garland of Hurricane, W.Va., and Daniel H. Garland of Las Vegas, Nev.; three step-children, T. Ben Garland, Jr. and wife, Sylvia, of Vienna, W.Va., Jo Ann Philpott and husband, Charles, of Philpott, Va., and Earl Garland of Bluefield, Va.; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Tanner B. Garland; a sister, Ethel Collias; and two brothers, John and Gus Psathas of Calif.

Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5, at Tyler Mountain Memory Chapel, Cross Lanes, W.Va. with Father Louis Scoulas officiating. Burial will follow. Visitation will be from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 4, at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Pike St., south Parkersburg and one hour prior to service at the Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens Chapel, Cross Lanes, W.Va.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John Greek Orthodox Church, 3512 McCorkle Ave., SE, Charleston, WV 25304.

Doris T. Nedeff

Doris Travis Nedeff, 78, of Parkersburg, W.Va., died November 29, 2009, at Muskingum Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation.

She was born in Blandville, W.Va., a daughter of the late Robert L. and Ollie G. Sutton Travis.

She was a 1949 graduate of Doddridge County High School. She was a homemaker, and also spent many hours working in the family business; C & D Jewelry and Loan. To all that knew her, she was a kind woman with a heart of gold, who was devoted to her husband and family.

Surviving are her daughters, Stacey Ottosi (Gary) of Valley Cottage, New York, and Mica Davis (Steve) of Parkersburg, W.Va.; her son, Charles Nedeff Jr. (Kelly), also of Parkersburg, W.Va.; nine grandchildren, Bryan, Chaz, Michael, Thomas, Carley, and Ashley Nedeff, Courtney Ottosi, Sheri Csapo (Tom), and Maigen Milanese; eight great-grandchildren, Shyanne, Madison, Travis, Roman, Nevaeh, Cole, Evelyn, and Faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles M. Nedeff Sr.; one granddaughter, Brittany Ottosi; and two brothers, Duane and Donald Travis.

Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10AM, Thursday, December 3, 2009, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church with Rev. Doug Ondeck as celebrant. Burial will follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8PM on Wednesday, December 2, 2009, at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 400 Green St., Parkersburg, with a Christian Wake Service at 7PM.

Lelen Blake

Lelen B. Blake, 73, of Mineral Wells, W.Va., passed away on November 26, 2009 at his home after a battle with cancer.

He was born on November 23, 1936, in Salem, W.Va., a son of the late Clarence and Opal Edgel Blake.

Lelen was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He worked 50 years at Clarksburg Casket Company providing for his family. He loved hunting, fishing and relaxing with his coffee, newspaper and pipe. He loved spending time visiting with his family and his grandchildren.

He is survived by his children; three sons, Rick Blake of West Union, W.Va., Jeff Blake of Rockport, W.Va., and Tim Blake of Davisville, W.Va.; three daughters, Teresa Titus, Mineral Wells, W.Va., Cathy Sirk of Davisville, W.Va. and Shannon Jolly of Elizabeth, W.Va.; and fourteen grandchildren, Timmy, Jamie and Andy Blake, Michael and Brittany Sirk, Justin Titus, Sierra, Kaeli and Francesca Jolly, Tessa, Destiny, Neleh, Lily and Maggie Blake; and four brothers.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Blake; a grandson, Jeffery Blake; and a sister, Ninabelle.

A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Flowers and cards will be accepted at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Pike St., south Parkersburg.

Daniel E. Kniska

Daniel E. Kniska, 76, of Parkersburg, W.Va. went to be with our Lord on November 27, 2009 in Morgantown, W.Va.

He was born October 31, 1933 in Clarksburg, W.Va., a son of the late Andrew and Elizabeth Sotak Kniska.

Dan was a graduate of Roosevelt Wilson High School, Clarksburg, W.Va. and an industrial engineer graduate of WVU. His professional career began at Mead Paper Co. He was a former owner and operator of Gooley Distributing Company in Parkersburg and more recently a real estate developer for McPherson-Kniska Contracting. He was a member of WVU Industrial Engineering Advisory Board, Knights of Columbus, Rotary, Moose, and a past president of the Int'l Pulp and Paper Industry Board. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church.

His love of life was his faith in God, his family and everything about West Virginia and WVU. He enjoyed golfing with his buddies, fishing with his sons and playing with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Tania Nicolai Kniska; a daughter, Alexia Marie Kniska and husband, Paul Smith, of Sante Fe, New Mexico; two sons, Daniel A. Kniska and wife, Lorena Ballester, of Morgantown, W.Va. and Gregory M. Kniska and wife, Kimberly, of Tega Cay, South Carolina; two sisters, Mary Diamond and Cecil Davish, both of Bridgeport, W.Va.; two brothers, Nicholas Kniska and wife, Helene, of Bethesda, Maryland and Thomas Kniska and wife, Sandy, of Bucyrus, Ohio; five grandchildren, David and Hannah Gresham and Carmelo, Lucas and Marcos Kniska; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Furbee and four brothers, Andrew, William, Michael and Joseph Kniska.

A Celebration of Life Service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church with Father Joseph L. Peterson as Celebrant. Services will conclude with burial at Mt. Carmel Cemetery with full military graveside rites by American Legion Post 15, Parkersburg. Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. Tuesday with a Christian Wake Service at 8 p.m. at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 400 Green Street, Parkersburg, W.Va.

Memorials are preferred to the American Heart Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Boyd R. Baker

Boyd Randal Baker, 73, of Parkersburg, passed away November 25, 2009 at Camden Clark Memorial Hospital.

He was born November 19, 1936 in Ritchie County, W.V., a son of the late James A. and Lena A. Layfield Baker.

Boyd was a graduate of Harrisville High School, served in the U.S. Army for six years, a lifetime member of the DAV Chapter 32, a member of the Carpenter's Local for 15 years and retired from the Wood County Board of Education as a Carpenter. He loved farming, fishing, his church, coffee with friends and spending time with his family. He was a long time member and trustee of the South Parkersburg United Methodist Church where he enjoyed volunteering along with many other volunteer projects around town.

He is survived by two daughters, Lora L. (Steve) Bumgarner of Milton, W.V. and Marianne E. (Thom) Williams of Albany, Ohio; two sons, Christopher Boyd (Beth) Baker of Washington, W.V. and Gregory J. (Susan) Baker of Coolville, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Michelle, Stephanie and Rachel Bumgarner, Breanne Baker, Katelyn and Austin Baker and Collin and Rylee Williams; one sister Lorna Kay (Robert) Burwell of Walker, W.V.; and four brothers, James Owen (Jean) Baker of Millersburg, Ohio, Edward Ray (Patricia) Baker of Washington, W.V., Carrel Leon (Loretta) Baker of Harrisville, W.V. and Oren Wesley (Thelma) Baker of Marietta, Ohio.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 30, at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, South Parkersburg with Pastor Rick Brown officiating. Interment will follow at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Harrisville, W.V. The family will receive friends from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 29 and on Monday from 9:00 a.m. until time of service, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the South Parkersburg United Methodist Church 1813 Rayon Drive Parkersburg W.V. 26101 or the American Cancer Society P.O. Box 4451 Parkersburg, WV 26104.
