Christine 'Christy' Shaffer

Christine 'Christy' Shaffer, 24, of Pickerington, Ohio, died Friday, December 18, 2009 at Children's Hospital after a brief illness.

Christy was born in Austin, Tex. on January 6, 1985 to Becky (Turner) Shaffer and Tom Shaffer.

Christy was intellectually gifted and won multiple scholarships, receiving her undergraduate degree from Emory University in Atlanta. She was a founding member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority and also a member of Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity. In June 2009 she received her master's degree from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Behavioral Analysis and was ready to start her career in Savannah as a Behavior Analyst.

Christy had an incredible knack for getting through to people in need. Her compassion led her to devoting inexhaustible time and love to underprivileged and disable children that all else forgot. Her passion influenced her peers into action so effectively that she was awarded Emory Volunteer of the Year in 2004. Her heart was only matched by her mind, Christy saw the world through a different pair of eyes than the rest of the world. Her efficacy to solve unsolvable problems and to teach others an entirely different way to see the world was a gift to those around her. Christy led a pursuit for something more, more than this world readily offers. Her journey led her on adventures no one thought possible for her. She traveled across the country and even lived in Costa Rica for six months, never letting circumstances keep her down. Christy demanded more than what was handed to her and inspired us by proving she could do anything if she tried. Perhaps this world didn't have everything she desired, but now she's moved on to a place that does. She refused to be held down by the constrictions of society and accomplished so much because she did it her way.

She is survived by her father, Tom Shaffer of Worthington, Ohio; her mother, Becky Turner Shaffer of Pickerington, Ohio; two brothers, Jonathan Shaffer and Daniel Shaffer both of Pickerington, Ohio; several aunts and uncles including, Bobby Turner and children, Jennifer and Jason Turner all of Parkersburg; and a host of other cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Robert and Anna Turner who resided in Parkersburg.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 22 at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Pike St, south Parkersburg with Pastor J. D. Reed officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen North Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. on Monday, December 21, and from 10:00 a.m. until time of service on Tuesday, December 22, at the funeral home.
