James T. Shannon

James T. Shannon, 84, of Parkersburg, W.Va., passed away on May 17, 2010 at Camden Clark Memorial Hospital.

He was born September 27, 1925, in Pittsburgh, Pa., a son of the late Edwin L. and Eleanor Garner Shannon.

James was an account executive with Alcoa Aluminum Company in Pittsburgh and formerly worked at Falghren and Associates of Parkersburg. He was a United States Marine Corp veteran serving in World War II in the South Pacific. He was a member of the Elks Club of Parkersburg.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marjorie Peters Shannon; three daughters, Jacqulyn Peck of Las Vegas, Nev., Nancy Strimer (Rich) of Parkersburg, W.Va., and Jamie Farley (Mark) of Boynton Beach, Fla.; one sister, Dr. Marjorie King of Johnson City, Tenn.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a special friend and caregiver, Bertie Lemley.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-father, Lon Colborn; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Martha and Scotty Timms; and a niece Diana Sellins.

A memorial service will be 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home 2333 Pike St. Parkersburg, W.Va. with Pastor John Strimer officiating. Visitation will be 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of choice.

Ada Ruth Balsley

Ada Ruth Balsley, 80, of Washington, W.Va., passed away on May 15, 2010 at Parkersburg Care and Rehabilitation Center in Parkersburg, W.Va.

She was born June 25, 1929, in New England, W.Va, a daughter of the late Robert Brooks and Mildred Wigal Lieber.

Ada was retired after 26 years of service from the A&P; Grocery Company and she was a member of the Lubeck Church of Christ.

She is survived by two sisters, Roberta Boone of Parkersburg and Janice Dotson of Williamstown, W.Va.; a step-daughter, Pam Deem of Parkersburg; three special friends, Paul and Frances Hofmann of Washington, and Harold Stanley of Mineral Wells, W.Va.; several nieces and nephews; and a great-nephew.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold C. Balsley in 2000; one sister, Kathryn Seaman in 2008; and two nephews.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 19, at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Pike St., south Parkersburg with Steve Fuchs officiating. Interment will follow at the Hopewell Cemetery. Visitation from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 18, and two hours prior to the services on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Arthur C. Joy, Sr.

Arthur C. Joy, Sr., age 81, of Parkersburg, passed away Friday, May 14, 2010 at the Ohio Valley Health Care Center. He was born March 1, 1929 in Wirt County, WV, the son of the late Floyd E. and Cynthia Bishop Joy.

He was a graduate of Wirt County High School, US Army Korean War veteran, Baptist by faith and retired boilermaker of Local Union #667.

Arthur is survived by two sons, Camden F. Joy of Lubeck and Arthur C. Joy, Jr. of Rockport, one granddaughter, Nicole Joy of West Union, West Virginia, several step-grandchildren, three sisters, Myrtle Younglove of Tampa, Florida, Rosella Nutter of Culloden, West Virginia and Ina Harmsworth of Fair Field, California, one brother, Cecil Joy of New England, WV, one stepdaughter, two stepsons, several nieces and nephews, and special caregiver Ruth Ann Walker.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Imogene Longwell Joy, four brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m., Monday, May 17, 2010 at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home 2333 Pike Street, Parkersburg, West Virginia, with Pastor Dean Ash officiating. Burial will follow at Lubeck Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post 15 of Parkersburg. Visitation will be 2-4 & 6-8 Sunday at the Funeral Home.

Grace L. Smith Robinson

Grace L. Smith Robinson 85, of Oldsmar, FL, passed away May 14, 2010. She is survived by her children, James D. Smith (Susan) and Timothy E. Smith (Mary); her grandchildren, Shad Smith (Joanna), Priscilla Smith and Denise Besson; and two great-grandchildren, Caleb and Adelina Smith.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday May 20, 2010 at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home 3005 Grand Central Ave Vienna with Tom Butterfield officiating. Alara Burnice Deever

A Burnice Deever

Alara Burnice Deever, 89, formally of Vienna, died May 13, 2010 at the Parkersburg Care and Rehab Center in Parkersburg.

Burnice was born July 22, 1920 in Dawes, WV the daughter of the late Howard and Belle Haught Deever. Her parents, natives of Wirt County, returned to this area while she was a young child.

Graduating from Parkersburg High School in the class of January, 1938, she began working at the local telephone company. Burnice then became employed by Brodias, Stone and Thomas, on Market Street in Parkersburg (now Elder Beerman), retiring after 34 years.

Burnice joined the Vienna Baptist Church in 1930. She was very active in church life as a Sunday school teacher, choir member, church treasurer and as an 'advisor' with the traveling ViBaChu youth choir. The Church dedicated the nursery in her name as an honor for her 30 years of love and nurture of babies from several generations. She was active in the Baptist Women's Ministries serving on the State Board and also volunteered at the West Virginia Baptist Convention office for ten years.

Her family will greatly miss her at gatherings where she always shared stories that were very intriguing. Burnice shared that one of her most fond memories was roaming the Wirt County hills with her cousin, Bill Deever, to trace the family history. With her passing, that generation of history is now quiet.

Burnice is survived by her sister in law, Gussie Deever of Parkersburg; niece Pat & Garry Hess of Mineral Wells; sister in law, Jo Ellen Deever of Minneapolis; nephews Howard & Kathy Deever of Omaha; David & Lisa Deever of Minneapolis; nieces Nancy Deever of Santa Fe, New Mexico; Margaret & Robert Van Why of St. Paul; and Mary Deever of White Bear Lake, Minnesota and close cousin Amy Deever Harris (Jack) of Parkersburg; and six great nieces and nephews

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers Howard 'June' Deever and Russell R. 'Babe' Deever; nephew Bryan Deever and close cousin William R. Deever.

The family thanks the staff of Colonial House and the Parkersburg Care & Rehab Center, Dr. Cramer and Dr. Hamirani for their love, care and support of Burnice.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday May 15, 2010 at the Vienna Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Brown, Dennis Pratt officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 on Friday at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home 3005 Grand Central Ave Vienna and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Charles Albert Tanner

Charles Albert (Chuck) Tanner, 82, of Parkersburg, W.Va., passed away on May 11, 2010, at the Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital in Parkersburg.

Charles was born Sept. 9, 1927, in Parkersburg, W.Va. a son of the late Ralph T. Tanner and Sylvia P. Richards Tanner.

He retired from E.I. DuPont, was a member of the Vienna Masonic Lodge #172, Ben Bay Grotto, Scottish Rite, and the American Legion Post 15. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in WWII.

Charles is survived by two sons, David P. Tanner and wife, Patricia of Williamstown, W.Va., and Daniel S. Tanner and wife, Moni of Mineral Wells, W.Va.; three grandchildren, Jason Tanner and Jeremy Tanner, both of Williamstown, W.Va. and John Tanner and fiancée, Lindsey of Louisville, Ky.; several nieces and nephews and many friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Page Tanner in 2008; one brother, Wilbur Tanner; and one sister, Grace Modesitt.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Nik Shah for the care he gave to Charles.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 15, 2010 at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home 1305 Washington Blvd. Belpre, Ohio with Pastor Tom Leasure officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen North Cemetery in Parkersburg with Masonic Rites by Vienna Lodge 172.

Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Friday and two hours prior to the services on Saturday at the funeral home.

Ruby Irene Montgomery

Ruby Irene Montgomery, 75, of Vienna, W.Va., passed away on Mother's Day, May 9, 2010, at the Arbors Rehabilitation Center in Marietta, Ohio.

She was born in Parkersburg, W.Va. August 6, 1934, the daughter of the late Elma Lockhart and William Hissam.

She was a homemaker and devoted her life to her family and the community of Vienna. She will be greatly missed. She was a member of St. John United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and volunteered in the community of Vienna for many years in a variety of roles.

She was a Girl Scout/Brownie Leader, active with UNICEF, volunteered her time for the Mid-Ohio Valley Immunization Clinics, coordinated the Vienna Newsletter and was a member of the Vienna Women's Club for many years. She served on the Vienna City Council for 20 years as city recorder and council woman where the beautification of the City of Vienna was one of her most rewarding roles.

She enjoyed bowling on the King/Queen League at Emerson Bowling Lanes; she was an avid sports fan attending all her grandchildren's sporting events around the community. She loved playing Bunco with her friends and most of all spending time with her family.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brothers, Alvadore Hissam, Robert Hissam and Forest Lockhart; her two sisters, Viola Ankrom and Reba Kesterson; and her oldest son, Harold William Montgomery Jr. (Bill).

She is survived by her husband, Harold Montgomery Sr.; her children, Mary Montgomery and companion, Randy Moss, of Davisville, W.Va., Vicky Wagner and companion, Jeff King, of Mineral Wells, W.Va., Kimberly and Craig Lowe of Parkersburg, W.Va., and Harry and Melissa Montgomery of Vienna, W.Va.; six grandchildren, Mark and Christopher Wagner, Harry Jr., and Andrea Montgomery, Zachary and Billy Lowe; and one great-granddaughter, Morgan Wagner.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday, May 13, 2010 at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 3005 Grand Central Ave., Vienna, W.Va. with the Rev. Danny McVey officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. until time of service.

Harold W. Bell

Harold W. Bell, 96, of Parkersburg, passed away Saturday, May 8, 2010 at Eagle Pointe.

He was born May 29, 1913 in Wirt County, W.Va. a son of the late James W. and Lelia Ruble Bell. He served in the U.S. Navy as a hospital corpsman during WWII and the Korean War. He was retired from the W.Va. Dept. of Highways as an inspector; was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and American Legion Post 15.

Harold is survived by two sons, Lewis Bell of Pittsburg, PA, and Jaime Bell of Belpre, Ohio; two brothers, Torrence R. Bell and his wife, Gladeline of Walker, W.Va., and Jefferson W. Bell and his wife, Juanita of Parkersburg, W.Va.; three grandchildren, Matthew Bell and Darli Walker of Pittsburg, PA., and Jordan Bell of Parkersburg, W.Va.; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Bakely Bell and Luke Bell; and his former wife, Evelyn.

Services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, May 10, 2010 at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home 400 Green St., Parkersburg, W.Va. with Pastor Daniel Morikone officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Visitation will be 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Stella Mae Thompson

Stella Mae Thompson, 80, of Parkersburg, W.Va., passed away on her birthday, May 7, 2010, at St. Josephs Hospital.

She was born in Parkersburg, W.Va., a daughter of the late Charles and Sylvia Latimer Brown.

Not only did Stella raise six boys, she was also formerly self-employed in housekeeping. She loved to cook, watching Nascar, and especially enjoyed watching baseball, her favorite team being the Atlanta Braves.

Surviving are five sons, Terry M. and Teddy D. Anderson, both of Parkersburg, W.Va., Eddie J. Anderson of Bradenton, FL., Robert D. Anderson of Williamstown, W.Va., and James E. Anderson, also of Parkersburg, W.Va.; one brother, Sonny J. Jones of Mineral Wells, W.Va.; twelve grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; ten nieces and nephews; her ex-husband, Edward Thompson; and her former step-children, whom she loved as her own, Rachel, Eddie, and Mary Thompson.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one son, Lonnie Anderson; one sister, Vera Anthony; and one brother, Holley Jones.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30PM Tuesday May 11, 2010, at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, south Parkersburg, with Rev. Rod Blanchard officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8PM on Monday May 10, 2010, at the funeral home.

Linda Lou Deems Myers

Linda Lou Deems Myers, 68, of Vienna, W.Va., passed away May 7, 2010 at her son's residence, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born June 17, 1941, in Wood Co., W.Va., a daughter of the late Thomas and Edna Hill McVey.

Linda was a homemaker and most of all loved The Lord. She enjoyed going to church, singing, and shopping. She loved life and lived hers to the fullest. She was a longtime member of the First Lutheran Church of Parkersburg.

Surviving is one daughter, Kelli Deems of Parkersburg, W.Va.; three sons, Scott Deems and wife Dawn of Parkersburg, W.Va., Billy Deems of Florida, and Jamie Deems and wife Amanda of Vienna, W.Va.; two sisters, Margie McVey of Little Hocking, OH, and Ethel Parsons of Parkersburg, W.Va.; eight grandchildren, Michael A. Corbin, Brandy N. and Ryan W. Mossburg, and Adam B., Tyler A., Brandon W., Olivia F., and Eden C. Deems; one great-grandson, Ezra J. Mossburg-Wartes; her niece and also a good friend, Belinda Butcher of Parkersburg, W.Va.; her former husband, Paul Kenneth Myers; and a host of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband, William Edward Deems; two sisters, Eleanor Burner and Anna Evans; two brothers, Eugene and Gordon McVey; several nephews; and one niece.

Memorial services will be conducted at 2PM Tuesday, May 11, 2010, at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 3005 Grand Central Ave., Vienna, W.Va. The family will receive friends from 12-noon until time of services on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Margaret Valerie Maguire Corbitt

Margaret Valerie Maguire Corbitt died May 5, 2010, at the age of 92 surrounded by her family. Margaret was a loving wife and mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, a model of grace and loveliness and will be remembered for her wit and wisdom by all who were touched by her life.

She grew up in Baltimore, Md., the daughter of the late Eva and Michael Maguire and was a graduate of Mount Saint Agnes Academy and the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Dr. Richard Wylie Corbitt, a son, Robert Emmett Corbitt; and a grandson, Joseph Wylie Corbitt.

Throughout her life she served her family, her church and her community. Margaret was a faithful member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. As a patron of the arts she served as president of the Parkersburg Art Center and was a member of the National Society of Arts and Letters.

Surviving are her daughters, Charlotte Corbitt of Parkersburg, W.Va., Mrs. Jack Grimm (Sheila) of Charleston, W.Va., Mrs. George Wilson (Marcia) of Springfield, Va., Mrs. Les Miller (Margaret) of Alexandria, Va., Mrs. Michael Powell (Mary) of Parkland, Fla.; sons, Terrence Corbitt (Anita) of Omaha, Neb., and Richard Corbitt Jr. (Terri) of Houston, Texas; 19 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

The family lovingly thanks Jean Vincent for her beautiful care of their mother.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon Saturday, May 8, 2010 at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church with Father Joseph Peterson as Celebrant. Burial will follow in Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday 10:30 a.m. until time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to Matthew 25 at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 2500 Dudley Ave., Parkersburg, WV 26101 or the charity of your choice.
