Gilbert Edward Thomason

Gilbert Edward Thomason, 82, of Tallmansville died Sunday, December 3, 2006, at his home in Queens. He was born April 12, 1924, in Long Run, W.Va., a son of the late Edgar Poling and Pearl Thomason Zickefoose. He was united in marriage July 3, 1953, to Arabelle R. Chewning Thomason, who survives.

Surviving is a son Gary Edward Thomason of Belington; four daughters: Anita Wright and husband John of Queens, Susie Perkins and husband Virgil of Ivy, Twiggy Tapscott of Queens, and Bobbi Lynn Thomason of Queens; five brothers: Alex Poling of Maryland, Roger Poling of Buckhannon, Darrel Zickefoose of Ohio, Carrol Zickefoose of Ohio and Harold Zickefoose of French Creek; 11 sisters: Virginia Kyle of French Creek, Mary Wilson of Rock Cave, Deloris Madden of Ohio, Hilda Hanifan of Queens, Betty Miller of Buckhannon, Gereta Cutright of Ohio, Ilene Arbogast of Maryland, Betty Phillips of North Carolina, Dot French of Maryland, Ellen Ketchom of Maryland and Genellia Yoakum of Ellamore.

In addition to his parents, one son Gilbert Eugene ?Snoop? Thomason; two brothers: Lairl and Lonzo Poling; and four sisters: Juanita VanDevender, Maude Flores, Icie Chewning and Doreen Poling, also preceded him in death.

Mr. Thomason was an oil well driller at Union Drilling and Sam Jack & Fox. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a Baptist by faith. Friends were received Tuesday, December 5, 2006 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. today, December 6, 2006 at the funeral home. The burial will follow at the Lanham Cemetery in Queens. The Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Garnet Wayne Montgomery

Garnet Wayne Montgomery, 81, of Ridgewood Avenue, Ashtabula, Ohio, died Sunday, December 3, 2006 at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home. He was born April 15, 1925, in Kedron, W.Va., a son of Hobert and Lottie (Simmons) Montgomery and had been an area resident since 1950.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II before being honorably discharged. Prior to his retirement, he worked for the Ashtabula Bow Socket. After retiring, he helped as groundskeeper for Village Green Golf Course in North Kingsville. A member of the First Church of God in Ashtabula, he loved golfing, bowling, fishing and most of all, his family.

Survivors included his wife of 58 years Margaret (Deal), whom he married April 20, 1948; four children: Linda (Bruce) Pepple, Sandra (Brian) Hubbard, and David Montgomery, all of Ashtabula, and Vivian (Ken) Green of Conneaut; seven grandchildren: Ricky, Jason, Kristi, Cory, Brandi, Katrina, and Steven; two great-grandchildren: Zachary and Tegan; and two sisters: Violet DeBarr of West Milford and Janet Black of Buckhannon.

He was preceded in death by his brother Claude Montgomery in 2005; two sisters in infancy; and his parents.

Services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, December 6, 2006 at the Ducro Funeral Services and Crematory, 4524 Elm Avenue, Ashtabula with Pastor Harold Morgan of the First Church of God officiating. The burial will follow at Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville. Calling hours were held at the funeral home on Tuesday, December 5 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and today, December 6 from noon to 1 p.m., the funeral hour. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Church of God, PO Box 648, Ashtabula, Ohio 44005.

Clara Grace Detamore Holcomb Bendel

Clara Grace Detamore Holcomb Bendel, 64, of Spencer, Ohio, died Tuesday, August 17, 2004, at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital in Weston. She was born October 27, 1939, at Centralia, Braxton County, a daughter of the late James Marcellus and Letha Frame Detamore.

She is survived by her first husband, Roy Holcomb Jr., and preceded in death by her second husband, Cecil Bendel.

She is survived by four daughters, Dora Yvonne Lee of Alexandria, Va., Katy Lucille Butcher of French Creek, Julie Ann Grubb of Sutton, and Lynn Thomas of Gassaway; two grandchildren, Cara Elaine Neel of Bridgeport and Sgt. Rusty Wayne Page of San Diego, Calif.; three step grandchildren: Bridget Butcher, Amanda Butcher, and Eric Butcher; two step great-grandchildren, Drew Michael Heatherly and Morgan Elizabeth Heatherly and one great-grandchild on the way; three brothers, Jim Detamore of West Milford, Lawrence Detamore of Alton, Richard Detamore of Napels, Fla.; and one sister, Sylvia Price of Nova, Ohio.

In addition to her parents and second husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, John, George and Harley Detamore, and seven sisters, Helen Davis, Lucille White, Virginia Hosey, Ruth Wightman, Juanita Carpenter, Arlene Grice and Carol Ann Huffman.

Clara was a Baptist by faith.

Friends will be received Thursday, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel. A funeral service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the funeral chapel with Pastor David Jessie officiating. Burial will follow in the Rock Cave Cemetery.

Charles Daniel Hammond

Charles Daniel Hammond, 18, of Philippi, passed away suddenly early Monday morning, August 16, 2004, at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital in Weston due to injuries that were sustained in an automobile accident while driving to work.

He was born October 1, 1985, in Monongalia County, a son of Charles C. Hammond and step-mother, Cecelia Vassar, of Philippi, and his mother, Debbie Dennis and her husband, David Mann, of Jackson?s Mill.

In addition to his parents, he is also survived by his paternal grandparents, Bill and Rita Hammond of Quiet Dell, and his maternal grandparents, Mack and Ina Dennis of Bruceton Mills; three sisters: Ann Hammond of Quiet Dell, Caroline King of Raleigh, N.C., and Andrea King of London, England; several uncles and aunts, as well as several cousins, including two special cousins: Jessica Hammond and Tommy Aichie both of Clarksburg.

Daniel grew up in Preston, Monongalia, Lewis, Harrison and Barbour Counties and was a 2004 graduate of Philip-Barbour High School.

He was working at Stonewall Jackson Resort as a service representative. Daniel was interested in snowboarding, drums, guitar and music in general. He was an avid hunter, and he enjoyed computers. Daniel was a beloved son, grandson, brother, and friend who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Friends were received at Burnside Funeral Home in Bridgeport from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, where a funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Thursday with the Rev. Joy Butcher-Winfree presiding.

Burial followed at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Quiet Dell.

Burnside Funeral Home on 607 S. Virginia Ave., in Bridgeport, is assisting the family of Charles Daniel Hammond with his funeral arrangements.

Patty Joann Davis

Patty Joann Davis, 71, of Virginia Beach, Va., passed away Tuesday, August 17, 2004, at Virginia Beach.

She was born in 1933 in Gould, W.Va., the daughter of the late Arnold D. and Letha Paulina Howes Phillips.

She was married for 43 years to her loving husband, Richard L. Davis, of Virginia Beach, who survives.

In addition to her husband, a daughter, Denise A. Davis-Shanks, of Virginia Beach, survives her.

A son, Kevin L. Davis, of Chesapeake, Va., also survives her.

Three brothers: John L. Phillips, of French Creek, Charles G. Phillips, of Aliquippa, Pa., and Howard E. Phillips, of Sewickley, Pa, survive her as well.

Three sisters: Betty S. Harris, of Glendale, Ariz., Linda L. Lester, of Baden, Pa., and Martha J. Reed, of Tallmansville, survive Mrs. Davis.

In addition to her mother and father, two brothers, Arnold D. Phillips, and Dwight L. Phillips, as well as a sister, Mary Lou Ware, preceded her in death.

Mrs. Davis was a homemaker and a member of the Carolanne Farms Garden Club and the Hummel Club.

She attended the First Baptist Church in Norfolk, Va.

Friends will be received today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Tomblyn Whitescarver Funeral Chapel.

A funeral service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the funeral chapel, with the Rev. James Johnson officiating.

Burial will follow at the Hinkleville Cemetery.

Memorial donation may be made to the American Heart Association.

Tomblyn Whitescarver Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Josephine Smith Reed

Josephine Smith Reed, 81, of Adrian died Monday, August 16, 2004, at her home in Buckhannon.

She was born June 4, 1923, in Upshur County, the daughter of the late William Ervin Smith and Mollie Morrison Smith.

She was united in marriage on May 3, 1946, to Raymond O. ?Coke? Reed, who survives.

In addition to her husband, surviving are two daughters: Elnora and Clarence ?Buddy? Bowles of Hopewell, Va., and Mary Lou and Frank Hyre of Rock Cave; a son, Ronald and Debbie Reed of Westerville, Ohio; three granddaughters: Lorna Raburn of Prince George, Va., Tina Tanner of Chester, Va., and Kathy Bowles of Colonial Heights, Va.; two grandsons: Jason Cogar of Selbyville, and Joshua Reed of Buckhannon; three step-granddaughters: Jaime Plymale of Buckhannon, Cara DeGarmo of Westerville, Ohio, and Tina Harman of Elkins; two step-grandsons: Mitch Hyre of Raleigh, N.C., and Anthony Hyre of Charleston; eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Robert Reed, a brother, Fred Smith, eight sisters: Emma Hosaflook, Bertha Smith, Edna Smith, Rosetta Smith, Reka Chaney, Virgia Gillis, Daisy DeBarr, and Vesta Kriner, and one granddaughter, Ann Znidarsic.

She was an inspector at Reidbord Brothers and was a Pentacostal by faith.

Friends were received Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Poling St. Clair Funeral Home.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. today, August 20, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Wease Day officiating. Burial will follow at the Buckhannon Veterans Cemetery in Buckhannon.

Mary R. Hull

Mary R. Hull, 70, a 43 year resident of Aberdeen, Wash., died at Grays Harbor Health and Rehabilitation Center in Aberdeen Tuesday, August 17, 2004.

She was born in Pickens, November 21, 1933, the daughter of Preston Lockard Smith and Wanda (Williams) Smith, granddaughter of Bessie Gould and Amy Williams Corder.

She was raised in Pickens and graduated from high school there in 1950. She married Charles C. ?Buck? Hull in Fairmont, September 7, 1957, and continued to live there and then in Baltimore, Md. before coming to Aberdeen in 1961. In Fairmont, Mrs. Hull worked at a dry-cleaning company. After coming to Aberdeen, she was a teacher?s aid at Robert Gray Elementary School from 1971-95.

Mrs. Hull was a member of the Aberdeen Footprinters, Eagles and Veterans of Foreign Wars, and was also active behind the scenes at the Driftwood Players Theater.

She enjoyed reading, canning, gardening, cross-stitch, and enjoyed her folk dancing group in West Virginia. She enjoyed being with her children and grandchildren, never forgetting a birthday. As she was the oldest of her own siblings she had been a great influence in the lives of her younger brothers and sisters.

Besides her husband of the family home in Aberdeen, Mrs. Hull is survived by two sons: Phillip, of Aberdeen and Bill, of Puyallup; a daughter: Beverly Standstipher, of Hoquiam; two brothers: David Smith, of Aberdeen and Mike Bennett, of Cosmopolis; four sisters: Shirley Carter, of Montesano, Pricilla Tuning, in Maryland, Charlotte, living in Texas and Dolores Wise, of Romeney, West Virginia. There are also 12 grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 21 in the chapel at Fern Hill Funeral Home, Aberdeen.

A private inurnment was held in the Fern Hill Cemetery.

Bobby Ray McCartney

Bobby Ray McCartney, 76, of Buckhannon died Friday, August 20, 2004, at St. Joseph?s Hospital.

He was born May 9, 1928, in Pursglove, W.Va., the son of the late Laben Jackson McCartney and Lelah Pearl Armstrong McCartney.

He was united in marriage on March 24, 1952, to Lenna Mae Myers McCartney, who survives.

Surviving in addition to his wife, two daughters: Cynthia Kay and Richard Ewing of Buckhannon, Deborah Raye McCartney of Ventura, Calif.; sister Helen and Don Craig of Buckhannon; brother Laben J. and Bette McCartney of Huntington, Md.; granddaughter Erin Albaugh Boyd of Buckhannon; grandson Joel Beckwith Ewing of Buckhannon; special friends: Ron and Sandy Murphy of Buckhannon, and Jim and Reta Long of Buckhannon.

Preceded in death by his parents and one brother Jackson F. McCartney.

He was an auto parts manager, served in the U.S. Navy as a Chief Petty Officer retiring after 13 1/2 years with a medical discharge. He served on USS Forrestal Aircraft Carrier and several others during his career.

He was a member of Buckhannon VFW Post No. 3663 and Frank B. Bartlett Post No. 7 American Legion, and a member of the Wayside So. Baptist Church.

Friends will be received today, August 23 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Wayside So. Baptist Church on the Brushy Fork Rd., in Buckhannon.

The funeral service will be held 10 a.m. at the Wayside So. Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Knotts officiating.

The burial will follow at the Buckhannon Veterans Cemetery with the Buckhannon VFW Post No. 3663, Frank B. Bartlett Post No. 7 American Legion and French Creek Chapter No. 36 DAV will conducting military honors at the graveside.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Wayside So. Baptist Church, the American Cancer Society or the Gideon?s International.

Ancil Burton Cutlip

Ancil Burton Cutlip, 83, of Vienna, W.Va., passed away Sunday, August 22, 2004 following a brief illness.

He was born August 29, 1920, in Sutton, W.Va. the son of the late William Henry and Nelia Hurst Cutlip.

His wife of 54 years, Mary Helen Reed Cutlip, whom he married on August 4, 1950, survives him.

Two daughters: Rebecca Lynn and her husband Rev. Daniel Taylor, of Newark, Ohio, and Joyce Ann and her husband Marvin ?Skip? Hawley, of Williamstown, W.Va. survive him.

Four grandchildren: Keren and Mary Beth Hawley, as well as Jacob and Sarah Taylor, also survive him.

Three step-grandchildren: Mike and Mark Hawley and Kelly Hawley Klaustermeyer, along with one step-great-grandson, Matt Ryan, survive Mr. Cutlip as well. Several nieces and nephews also survive him.

In addition to his parents, a brother, George Lester Cutlip, and two sisters: Opel and Flossie Cutlip preceded him in death.

Mr. Cutlip attended the one-room Bond School on Cutlip?s Fork in Braxton County. He then graduated from Sutton High School.

He served in the European Theater of Operations during World War II with the 519th Ordinance Company FA. After the war, he attended WVU, where he received a B.S. degree in agricultural science. He later received a master?s degree.

Mr. Cutlip retired from the W.Va. Extension Service in 1981, after serving in Lewis County as the Rural Area Development Agent, in Upshur County as a 4-H agent, and in Pleasants County as county agriculture agent.

Prior to his work in extension, Mr. Cutlip had worked in advertising for Case Farm Machinery in Racine, Wis. Prior to that he was a vocational-agriculture teacher at Normantown High School in Gilmer County.

After his retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Cutlip moved to Glenville, where he was active with the W.Va. Folk Festival and the Glenville Country Store. For nearly 20 years, he operated the steam engine to grind corn meal at the Mountain State Art and Craft Fair at Cedar Lakes and at the W.Va. Folk Festival.

He and his family enjoyed several trips, including visits to the Greenbrier Resort and Washington D.C. as a result of their participation in heritage crafts.

At the age of 13, he made a profession of faith in Jesus Christ and was baptized in the Elk River in March 1934. He has served as Sunday School superintendent and deacon in American Baptist Churches in the communities where he lived. Since moving to Vienna, he has been a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church.

His body had been donated to the Human Gift registry at WVU. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Parkersburg. The Rev. Dr. Kurt Busiek and the Rev. David Carpenter officiating. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Baptist International Ministries, PO Box 851, Valley Forge, PA 19482-0851 or the Wood County Christian School, 113 W. Ninth St. Williamstown, WV 26187.
