Howard Lee Johnson Sr.

Howard Lee Johnson Sr., 78, of Bailey Ridge, passed away Thursday, September 9, 2004, at his home following a long illness.

He was born January 31, 1926, in Buckhannon the son of the late Charles and Josie Bailey Johnson.

His wife, Christine Adams Johnson, of Bailey Ridge, survives him.

In addition to his wife, two sons: Howard Johnson Jr. and wife Maxine and Keith Johnson and wife Judy, all of Buckhannon, also survive him.

One stepson, Terry Mullins and wife Chris, of Milton, W.Va. survives him as well.

Three daughters: Helen Baisden and husband David, of Houston, Texas, Bonnie Hoover, of Morgantown, and Mary Inman and husband Howie, of Houston, Texas, survive Mr. Johnson.

Three brothers: William Johnson, of Deepwater, Mo., Russell Johnson, of Rosemont, W.Va., and Robert Johnson, of Buckhannon, also survive him.

Two sisters: Virginia Tharp, of New Jersey, and Margaret McGee, of Hillman, Mich., survive him.

Sixteen grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren also survive him.

In addition to his parents, a son, Larry Johnson, preceded him in death.

Mr. Johnson was a coal miner and a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge No. 598 in Buckhannon.

Friends will be received today, Friday, September 10 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Tomblyn Whitescarver Funeral Chapel.

The funeral service will be held Saturday, September 11 at 2 p.m. at the funeral chapel. Interment will take place at the Bailey Cemetery.

Tomblyn Whitescarver Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Morris Tenney

Morris Tenney, 73, of Maryville, Tenn., passed away Monday, September 13, 2004, at Blount Memorial Hospital in Maryville.

He was born February 9, 1931, the son of the late Gay Tenney and Dele DeBarr Tenney.

His wife, Frances Tenney, of Maryville, survives him.

In addition to his wife, two sons: David and wife Teresa Tenney, of Maryville, and Greg and wife Jean Tenney, of Ohio, survive him as well.

Two sisters: Margaret Revelet, of Akron, Ohio, and Pamela Buchanon, of Seymour, Tenn, also survive him.

Seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive him.

A brother-in-law, Ronnie and wife Diana DeBarr, of Canton, Ohio, survive him.

In addition to his father and mother, a sister, Merle Tenney, preceded him in death, as did two brothers: Jerle Tenney and Robert Tenney.

The funeral service will be held Thursday, September 16, 2004, at the Tenmile Baptist Church at 1 p.m.

The Rev. George Freeman will be officiating.

Burial will take place at the Tenmile Baptist Cemetery.

Flora Katherine Riggs

Flora Katherine Riggs, 97, of Tallmansville, died Saturday, October 2, 2004, at St. Joseph?s Hospital. She was born March 8, 1907, in Upshur County, the daughter of the late Samuel B. Tenney and Nora Ann Butcher Tenney. She was united in marriage on April 1, 1928, to the late William A. Riggs, who preceded her in death on Feb. 24, 1963. In addition to her parents and husband, also preceding her in death were a son James A. Riggs, and brother Rev. Lloyd Tenney.

Surviving are two daughters: Patricia and Walter Strader of Buckhannon and Inez and Sherman, Jr. Wilfong of Tallmansville; son David L. and Kathy Riggs of Spokane, Washington; two sisters: Lelia Joy Ours of Tallmansville and Delphia Hilton Mason of Buckhannon; 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was a schoolteacher in Webster and Upshur counties, a member of the Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church, and also taught Sunday school for 50 years.

Friends will be received on Thursday, October 7, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Poling St. Clair Funeral Home Inc. The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 8, at the Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church with Karen Frazier, the Rev. John A. Mason and the Rev. Tom Holtsclaw officiating. The burial will follow at the Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Tallmansville. The Poling St. Clair Funeral Home Inc. of Buckhannon is in charge of the arrangements.

Paul Westfall

Paul Westfall, 87, of Buckhannon died Saturday, October 9, 2004, at Serenity Care in Buckhannon. He was born July 29, 1917, in Hampton, W.Va., the son of the late Eli Benjamin Westfall and Madge Warner Westfall. He was preceded in death by his parents and also a sister Elizabeth ?Si? Robinson and a brother Clifford Westfall.

Surviving are a sister Hilda Moore of Canal Fulton, Ohio; three nephews: Kenneth Robinson of Buckhannon, Larry Robinson of Akron, Ohio, and Gary Robinson of Buckhannon; and a niece Laura Fowler of Akron, Ohio.

Mr. Westfall was a railroad inspector at B&O; Railroad, served in the U.S. Army during WWII, a lifetime member Buckhannon VFW Post No. 3663, and a member of Hampton United Methodist Church.

Friends were received Tuesday, Oct. 12, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Poling St. Clair Funeral Home Inc. The funeral services will be held today, Oct. 13, at the funeral home with the Rev. Tristan Tenney officiating. The burial will follow at the Hampton Church Cemetery in Hampton. The Buckhannon VFW Post No. 3663, Frank B. Bartlett Post No. 7 American Legion and DAV Chapters 5 & 36 will conduct military honors at the graveside. The Poling St. Clair Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of the arrangements.

Obie Blain Zirkle Jr.

Obie Blain Zirkle Jr., 85, of Buckhannon, passed away Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at the Barbour County Good Samaritan Center.

He was born June 7, 1919. He was the son of the late Obie Blain Zirkle and Elma Gertrude Spencer Zirkle.

A son, Roger Zirkle, of Florida, survives him, as do several nieces and nephews.

Two grandchildren also survive him.

Mr. Zirkle served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Burial will take place Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, at 2 p.m. at the Buckhannon Veterans Cemetery.

The Rev. Mark Davis will be officiating.

The Buckhannon VFW Post No. 3663, the Frank B. Bartlett Post No. 7 of the American Legion and the DAV Chapters No. 5 and 36 will conduct military honors at graveside.

Scott P. Stein

Scott P. Stein, 22, of Allison Park, Pa., passed away Sunday, October 10, 2004.

He was the son of Raymond D. Stein and wife Renee and Nancy A. Zimmerman and husband Ed.

He was the grandson of Darrell and Mary Stein, Mildred Kobert, Albert and Shirley Kobert, Jean and Ray Sokolowski as well as Don and Edna Zimmerman.

Visitation will be today, Wednesday, October 13, 2004, and Thursday, October 14, 2004, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Neely Funeral Home located on 2208 Mt. Royal Blvd., Glenshaw, Pa., 15116.

The funeral service will be held Friday at Emmanuel Luthern Church in Etna, Pa.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the West Virginia Wesleyan College Football program, 59 College Ave., Buckhannon, WV 26201.

Mary Rose Atwell

Mary Rose Atwell, 57, of Buckhannon, passed away Monday, Oct. 11, 2004.

She was born August 22, 1947, the daughter of the late Alfred Earl Ruble and Dorothy Ruble.

Her husband, James Lee Atwell, survives her as does a daughter, Mary Lee Wagner and her husband James M., of Buckhannon.

A brother, William Earl Ruble, of Rock Cave, a sister, Dorothy Ruble, of Clarksburg, and a grandson, Justin Wagner, of Buckhannon, also survive her.

Three sisters-in-law: Rose and husband Steve Linger, Connie Kincaid and husband Donnie, and Elizabeth Browning and husband Dana, also survive her.

Two brothers-in-law: Roger Atwell and wife Janet, and Joe Atwell, survive her as well.

Ms. Ruble was a homemaker.

Friends were received Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home Inc.

The funeral will be held Friday, Oct. 15, 2004, at 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will take place at the Cow Run Cemetery in Arlington.

Robert ?Pops? Arnold

Robert ?Pops? Arnold, 79, of Marietta, Ga., died Saturday, October 9, 2004, at Well Stan Cobb Hospital in Marietta, Ga. He was born Feb. 27, 1925, in Eden, W.Va., the son of the late Clayton Milton Arnold and Rhoda Bennett Arnold. He was married to the late Joanne Belle Clark Arnold, who preceded him in death.

Surviving him are a son William J. Arnold of Montgomery, Ala.; a daughter Lou Ann Whitlock of Marietta, Ga.; two sisters: Ruth Sheppard of Marion, N.C., and Kathryn Hicks of Dailey, W.Va.; a step-brother Jim Simons of Salem, Ohio; nieces and nephews; and five grandchildren.

A West Virginia native, Mr. Arnold has been a resident of Smyrna for 30 years. He served in the Navy during WWII on the USS Marcus Island in the Pacific. He was a member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Mableton and a Mason.

Friends will be received today, Oct. 13, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Poling St. Clair Funeral Home Inc. The funeral services will be held Thursday, October 14, at the funeral home with Pastor Frank Spears officiating. The burial will follow at the Heavner Cemetery in Buckhannon. The Poling St. Clair Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of the arrangements.

Harriet Louise Spruance Ludlow

Harriet Louise Spruance Ludlow, of Buckhannon, died in her home on October 12, 2004. She was born June 23, 1907, in Smyrna, Del., daughter of Edgar and Lillian Evans Spruance.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Lott H. Ludlow. She was a resident of Felton, Del., for 45 years before moving to Buckhannon in 1982.

She is survived by her son Samuel S. Ludlow and wife Ann of Tallmansville, two daughters: Charlott S. Holck and husband Bert of Landenberg, Pa., and Nancy L. Seitz and husband Frank of Beachwood, New Jersey; six grandchildren: Bill, Robert, Lorinda, Frank, Cecilia, and Rachel; nine great-grandchildren, her nephews: Robert Schabinger of Buckhannon and Edward Schabinger of Middletown, Del.

Louise graduated from Chester County School of Nursing, West Chester, Pa., in 1929 and the Columbia School of Public Health, Columbia University, New York, New York in 1933.

She worked in Delaware for many years as a public health nurse and then as the Felton High School Librarian.

Since she moved to Buckhannon she was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Buckhannon, the Women?s Club of Buckhannon, the Upshur County Extension Homemakers, and a volunteer at the Upshur County Public Library.

She touched the lives of many people and will be missed by all that knew her.

Memorial services will be held at the First Methodist Church on Saturday, Oct. 23, at 1 p.m.

Donations may be made to the Upshur County Public Library or to the First United Methodist Church in lieu of flowers.

Ray J. ?Mac? Conrad

Ray J. ?Mac? Conrad, 79, of Century No. 1, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, at his home while in the care of Mountain Hospice in Belington.

He was born January 27, 1925, in Ellamore, the son of the late John B. and Antionette Naomi Gower Conrad.

He was united in marriage December 10, 1947, to Clara Furman Conrad, of Century, who survives.

In addition to his wife, three daughters: Joan Bragg and fiancé Bill Mumaw, of Martinsburg, W.Va., Elaine Alkire and husband Robert, of Marlinton, W.Va., and Maxine Haymond, of Century, survive him.

A son, Ray Richard Conrad and wife Belinda, of Hedgesville, also survive him.

Six grandchildren: Michael Todd Bragg and wife Brenda, of Inwood, W.Va., Michelle Travis and husband Daniel, of Martinsburg, W.Va., Robert Ray Alkire II and wife Teresa, of Marlinton, W.Va., Corey Alkire, of Charleston, W.Va., Jeffery Stum, of Hedgesville, and Shelton Conrad, of Hedgesville, survive him as well.

Four great-grandchildren: Michelle Brooke Bragg, Christopher Bragg, both of Inwood, W.Va., Kyleen Alkire and Chase Alkire, both of Marlinton, W.Va., also survive him.

A special buddy, Robert ?Bub? Riffle Jr., of Century, survives Mr. Conrad.

In addition to his father and mother, a son-in-law, Lynn Haymond, preceded him in death.

Mr. Conrad had been retired for 27 years from Bethlehem Mines, where he worked for 26 years.

He was a veteran of World War II, earning a Purple Heart for being wounded in combat.

He was a member of the VFW Post No. 3663.

He enjoyed woodworking and watching baseball. The Atlanta Braves were his favorite team.

He was a Methodist by faith.

Friends will be received today, Friday, Oct. 15, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Tomblyn Whitescarver Funeral Chapel.

The funeral will be Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at 2 p.m. at the funeral chapel. The Rev. Ed Lowther will be officiating.

Burial will take place at the Heavner Cemetery.

The VFW Post No. 3663, the Frank B. Bartlett Post No. 7 of the American Legion and the DAV chapters No. 5 and 36, will conduct a military service.

Tomblyn Whitescarver Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Linda Sue Clevenger

Linda Sue Clevenger, age 60, of Buckhannon, WV died Sunday, April 19, 2009 at her home under the care of St. Josephs Hospice.

She was born January 25, 1949 in Buckhannon, a daughter of the late Charles Edward Hollen and Mary Elizabeth (Johns) Hollen House.

On December 10, 1982 she married Ronald J. Clevenger who survives.

Also surviving are one son, James Chewning of Buckhannon and his children, James Chewning, Jr., Amber, Brittany and Faith Chewning all of Buckhannon and one daughter, Tonya Kennedy of Buckhannon and her children, Victoria Chewning of Buckhannon, Vanessa Chewning of Kesling Mill, Brandon Kennedy and Catalena Kennedy both of Buckhannon; two great-grandchildren, Jaiden Workman of Buckhannon and Colby Ball of Kesling Mill; one brother, Hartzel Hollen of Buckhannon and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Ronald Blaine Chewning; two brothers, Russell Chuck Hollen and Eddie Hollen and one sister, June Ours. Linda was a homemaker.

She attended Buckhannon Church of God and was a member and Secretary of The Modern Homettes CEOs. Friends will be received Thursday, April 23, 2009 from 5-9 PM at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held 2 PM Friday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Heavner Cemetery.

Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
