Charles J. Zgonce

Charles J. Zgonce, 75, of Englewood, died April 18, 2006. He was born March 29, 1931, in Niagara Falls, N.Y., and came to Englewood 15 years ago from the Chicago area. He served in the Army during the Korean War. In 1991 he retired as director of purchasing for Moore North America. He was employed by Moore for 41 years, and served as manager of two Moore printing plants before joining the headquarters group in Chicago.

He was an officer in several civic organizations, including Rotary International, the Lions Club and was president of the Buckhannon West Virginia Chamber of Commerce. He was active in the Blinded Veteran?s Association and served as Director of the Southwest Florida region. For five years he was a support group leader for the Manasota Lighthouse for the Blind.

Survivors include his wife Sandra; two sisters: Carol Tasson of Norwood, Ont., and Shirley DePonceau of Lewiston, N.Y.; two daughters: Linda De La Pena of Miami, Fla., and Amy Moore of Raleigh, N.C.; two step-sons: Kent Gadell and Scott Ballagh of Dallas, Texas and one step-daughter Ann Park of Florida.

A mass will be held on April 2 at 10 a.m. at St. Raphae Catholic Church in Englewood. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Blinded Veterans Association, c/o Dr. George Stocking, 3801 Coco Grove Avenue, Miami, Fla. 33133.

Leonard L. 'Tuck' Williams

Leonard L. 'Tuck' Williams passed away on Friday, April 28, 2006 after a brief illness. He was born the third child of nine to Cary and Nellie Williams on May 10, 1923.

In the span of his life, he was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1939 to 1941, served our country for 22 years 7 months and 6 days through the North African and Italian campaigns during World War II, flew on supply routes over the Artic Circle in Korea, and in Cameron Bay supplying soldiers during the Vietnam War. After retiring from the Air Force, he worked for the W.Va. Department of Highways as a bridge crew foreman and then as a welder and equipment operator in the oil and gas industries.

After retiring from the working world, Williams enjoyed his hobbies of fishing, hunting, tending his garden, building outdoor grills and spending time with family.

Mr. Williams was a husband of 57 years, a father of four, grandfather of 13, a great-grandfather of nine, a man of his word, a friend, a mentor, respected and loved by all that knew him. His presence will be sorely missed.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the WWII Veterans Memorial Fund, Washington D.C. in his name.

June Elner Simmons

June Elner Simmons, 80, of Hacker Valley died Sunday, April 30, 2006 at the Barbour Co. Good Samaritan Center in Belington after an extended illness. He was born June 12, 1925, in Webster Co., W.Va., a son of the late Elza Simmons and Alice Roena (Cowger) Simmons. Also preceding him in death were four sisters and four brothers.

Surviving are his wife Bertha Pearl (Carpenter) Simmons of Hacker Valley; seven daughters: Joan Sue (Carl) Williams of Buckhannon, Janice (Ernest Jr.) Lower of Buckhannon, Linda (Henry) Cochran of Wellington, Ohio, Charlene (Ernie) Johnston of Buckhannon, Doris (Robert) Neenan of Wellington, Ohio, Zelda (Rick) Bender of Hacker Valley, and Jill (Donald) Stemple of Buckhannon; four sons: Gary (Barbara) Simmons, Noah (Diane) Simmons, all of Lodi, Ohio, Virgil Joey (Sylvia) Simmons of Hacker Valley, and Shelby (Hilda) Simmons of Hacker Valley; grandchildren: Douglas, Shelley, Diane, Laticia, Debbie, Brian, Carrie, Eric, Nicholas, Teal, Melissa, Clarissa, Catlin, Kara, and Shelbie Lynn; great-grandchildren: Trevor, Tiffany, Jennifer and Kiara; and brother Harvey Simmons of Cowen.

Mr. Simmons was a woodsman, a veteran of the Navy in World War II, and a Christian by faith.

Friends will be received today, May 3, 2006 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Dodd & Reed Funeral Home, 155 McGraw Ave., Webster Springs, W.Va. The funeral will be held 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 4, 2006 at the funeral home with the Rev. Edward McDaniels officiating. The burial will follow in the Ware Cemetery in Hacker Valley. The Dodd & Reed Funeral Home of Webster Springs is in charge of the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial contributions to Hospice Care, 7 Harmon Center, Suite 203, Grafton, WV 26354.

Roy Junior Thomason

Roy Junior Thomason, 66, of Clarksburg died Tuesday, May 2, 2006 at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. He was born July 26, 1939 in Randolph County, a son of the late Roy W. Thomason and Lenora J. Shockey, Thomason, who survives in Buckhannon. He was united in marriage May 11, 1963, to Elizabeth (Betty) Ware Thomason, who survives in Clarksburg.

He is also survived by one son, Martin L. and wife Karen (Grega) Thomason of Clarksburg, and one daughter, Debra K. and husband Donnie Bonner of Adrian.

He is also survived by six grandchildren: Seth, Logan and Brittany Bonner of Adrian, and Jordan, Ashton and Brayden Thomason, all of Clarksburg; one brother, Charles and wife Sheila Thomason of Buckhannon; one sister, Katie and husband Clyde Howes of Buckhannon; two nephews; five great-nieces and nephews; two aunts, Pauline (Shockey) Grayson and husband Jim of Edgewater, Fla., and Dorothy Thomason of Mabie; one uncle, Ray Thomason of Holbrook Nursing Home; and his mother-in-law, Florence Ware of Adrian.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Albert L. Ware.

Mr. Thomason was a member of the IBEW Local 17 of Detroit, Mich., and a lifetime member of the NRA. He was also a NASCAR fan.

Friends will be received at the Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel today from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 1 p.m. at the funeral chapel with the Rev. Ralph Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Union Cemetery.

Johanna M. Riffle

Johanna M. Riffle, 74, of Cocoa Beach, Fla. and formerly of Buckhannon, died Sunday, April 30, 2006 at her home in Cocoa Beach, Fla. She was born October 7, 1931 in Ivanhoe, W.Va., the daughter of the late Jesse Cecil and Eula Mae Eskew Starkey.

She was married to the late James William Riffle who passed away June 2, 1983.

Surviving are four daughters: Shirley Radabaugh and husband Blaine of Buckhannon; Shelia Becker and husband Frank of Buckhannon; Tenna Thorne and husband Dale of Buckhannon; and Tonja Zehfuss and husband Matthias of Lawton, Okla.; one son: James W. Riffle II and wife Terecia of Buckhannon; 22 grandchildren: J.W., Ryan and Dustin Radabaugh, Angie Riffle and B.J. Becker, J. Michael Baldwin, Kelley and Cason Thorne, Brandi Elam, Jenna and Lori Jackson, Jessie Zchfuss, James W. Riffle III, Shelley, Jeremy, Joe, LaDawn, Leslie Lacy, Legend, Jesse and Lilly Riffle; 12 great-grandchildren and one sister: Nila Rosemarie Samter of Mt. Airy, N.C.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers: Olin, Jesse, Clifton and Dick Starkey.

Mrs. Riffle was a homemaker and Methodist by faith. She enjoyed helping people in need and loved children and her Mt. Hope Church. She will be greatly missed by her friends and family in West Virginia and her extended family in Cocoa Beach, Fla.

The viewing will be held 5-9 p.m. Thursday, May 4, at Tomblyn-Whitescarver Funeral Chapel. The service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, May 5 at the funeral chapel with Rev. William C. Eskew, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Upshur County Memorial Park.

Guy H. Phillips

Guy H. Phillips, 79, of Buckhannon died Wednesday, May 3, 2006, at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center. He was born April 20, 1927, in Mabie, W.Va., a son of the late Peter T. Phillips and Bertha Jack Phillips. He was united in marriage on May 27, 1950, to Joan V. McPherson Phillips, who survives. Also surviving are three sons: Rick Phillips of Fremont, Mich., Dan Phillips and wife Janet of Buckhannon and Craig Phillips; sister Deloris Marlowe of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son Michael Phillips; four sisters: Georgia, Audell, Freda, and Ava Marie; and four brothers: Dexter, Glenn, Lester, and Pete.

Mr. Phillips was a truck driver, lifetime member of the Buckhannon VFW Post No. 3663 and a Methodist by faith.

Friends will be received Saturday, May 6, 2006 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Gary Phillips officiating.

The burial will follow at the Sand Run Baptist Church Cemetery. The Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Vera Chipps

Vera Chipps, 83, of Walkersville, W.Va. died Thursday, May 10, 2007 at Crestview Manor Nursing Home in Jane Lew. She was born June 17, 1923, in Walkersville, a daughter of the late Lawrence L. and Opal Rolyson Hull. She was united in marriage to the late Lambert L. Chipps, who preceded her in death. In addition to her parents and husband, two brothers, three sisters and one great-grandson also preceded her in death.

Surviving are three sons: David Chipps and wife Maxine, Charles L. Chipps and Terry Chipps all of Walkersville; two daughters: Wanda Chipps of Beckley and Loretta Ashcraft and husband Randall of Weston; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Chipps was a homemaker, and a member of the Mission Independent Church of Walkersville.

Friends were received on Sunday, May 13, 2007 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Alkire Funeral Chapel. The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. today, May 14, 2007 at the funeral chapel. The burial will follow at the McCutchan Chapel Cemetery.

The Alkire Funeral Chapel of Ireland is in charge of the arrangements.

Pearl M. Delauder

Pearl M. Delauder, 83, of Buckhannon, the Hodgesville community in Buckhannon died Thursday, May 10, 2007 at her home. She was born March 8, 1924, in Flemington, W.Va., a daughter of the late Dorsey Marple and Maggie Weekly Marple.

She was united in marriage June 4, 1949, to the late William G. Delauder, who preceded her in death October 8, 1993.

In addition to her parents and husband, two brothers and one sister also preceded her in death.

Surviving are son William B. Delauder and wife Mary of Buckhannon; daughter Maggie Margaret Stobert and husband Richard of Amesville, Ohio; daughter Emma Lee McKibbon of Cleveland, Ohio; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Delauder was a homemaker.

Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. today, May 14, 2007 at the Grafton National Cemetery with the Rev. Gary Stackpole officiating.

The Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Alice Marie Westfall

Alice Marie Westfall, 69, of Morgantown died Thursday, May 10, 2007 at Monongalia General Hospital in Morgantown. She was born January 5, 1938, in Beckley, W.Va., a daughter of the late Hubert James Smith and Twila Pettrey Smith. She was united in marriage June 20, 1980, to Bennie H. Westfall, who survives. In addition to her parents, two sons: Darrell ?Butch? Hawkins and Jimmy Hawkins, one sister Margaret Kahler, and one niece Amber Canter, also preceded her in death.

Surviving in addition to her husband, are one daughter Andrea Lynn Drapela and husband Larry of Leechburg, Pa.; three step sons: Rev. Mike Westfall and wife Libby of Buckhannon, Mark Westfall and wife Theresa of Buckhannon, and Brad Westfall and wife Jodie of Grafton; five granddaughters: Whitney Westfall of Buckhannon, Jenna and Sidney Westfall both of Grafton, Jennifer and Jaeneka Westfall both of Buckhannon; four grandsons: Jason, Josh, Jordon and Dalton Westfall all of Buckhannon; two sisters: Jane Canter and husband Jim of Buckhannon and Mary Stalnaker and husband Barrett of North Carolina; brother-in-law Chuck Kahler of Port Charlotte, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Westfall was a nursing home administrator for Heartland Nursing Home. She was a member of the Pierpoint Church of The Nazerene.

Friends were received on Saturday, May 12, 2007 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. The funeral service was held 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 13, 2007 at the funeral home with the Rev. Tommy Thompson officiating. The burial followed in the Buckhannon Memorial Park in Buckhannon. The Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Raymond W. Kiser

Raymond W. Kiser, 88, of Buckhannon died Wednesday, May 9, 2007 at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. He was born July 31, 1918, in Franklin, W.Va., a son of the late William Hampton Kiser and Margaret Johnson Kee Kiser. He was united in marriage November 8, 1941, to Bula Brady Kiser, who survives. In addition to his parents, three brothers: Rush, Pendleton ?Tony? and Watson Kiser, and three sisters: Sue Smith, Eunice Bible and Martha Lee Varner, also preceded him in death.

Surviving is wife Bula (Brady) Kiser of Buckhannon; three daughters: Sandra Kiser of Spartanburg, S.C., Suzanne Haas of Buckhannon and Cheryl (Kiser) Brown of Pulaski, Tenn.; two sons: William ?Bill? Kiser Jr. and wife Ruth of Keyser and Robert ?Bob? Kiser of Buckhannon; three granddaughters: Susan Cobault of Indianapolis, Ind., Johanna Haas and husband Shae Davidson of Bloomington, Ill., and Summer Kiser of Buckhannon; seven grandsons: William ?Matt? Haas of Portland, Ore., Jeremiah and Matthew Kiser both of Keyser, Michael Kiser and wife April of Keyser, Robert Kiser and wife Ona of Buckhannon, Ted Brown and wife Stephanie of Hoover, Ala., and Tyler Brown of Pulaski, Tenn.; three great-grandsons: Trevor Kiser of Buckhannon, Gabriel Kiser of Keyser and William Michael Brown of Hoover, Ala.; great-granddaughter Alaina Kiser of Keyser; three sisters: Marie Simpson of Clarksburg, Virginia Weaver of Richmond, Va., and Rachel Ruddle and husband Billy of Arlington, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Kiser was a director of Admission and Financial ?W.Va. Wesleyan College. He was a Veteran of World War II, U.S. Naval Aviation 5 years, served on the Battleship the USS Washington and received an air medal and distinguished Flying Cross. He attended the First United Methodist Church.

Friends will be received on Saturday, May 12, 2007 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 13, 2007 at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Damon Rhodes officiating. The burial will follow in the Heavner Cemetery in Buckhannon. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the scholarship fund at the First United Methodist Church. The Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Genevieve M. Bunner

Genevieve M. Bunner, 92, of Rock Cave died Wednesday, May 9, 2007, 7:40 a.m., at her home. She was born September 20, 1914, in Alexander, W.Va., a daughter of the late Emery Reger and Cordie Phipps Reger. She was united in marriage December 28, 1936, to the late Wilbur F. Bunner, who preceded her in death October 3, 1998. In addition to her parents and husband, granddaughter Karen Bunner, and three brothers: Waldo, Ernie and Orvil Reger, also preceded her in death.

Surviving are three daughters: Marilyn Carpenter and husband Steven of French Creek, Vera Gregory and husband Roscoe of Rock Cave and Faye Taylor and husband Nick of Tampa. Fla.; three sons: Fred Bunner and wife Ginny of Tampa, Fla., Steve Bunner and wife Caryl of Tampa, Fla., and Tom Bunner and wife Helen of Rock Cave; two brothers: Guy Bernell Reger and wife Oneita of Mansfield, Ohio, and Loyal Reger and wife Tressie of Queen Anne, Md.; four sisters: Maxine Sayre of Rock Cave, Madeline Hosaflook of Buckhannon, Goldie Tinsley of Scott Depot, and Ada Tenney and husband Paul of Canal Fulton, Ohio; two sisters-in-law: Mavedell Reger of Buckhannon and Leverne Reger of Rock Cave; several nieces and nephews; 17 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Mrs. Bunner was a homemaker and attended the Pleasant Dale United Methodist Church in Selbyville, W.Va. Her greatest passion was to serve the Lord. She received much pleasure from making quilts.

Friends will be received today, May 11, 2007 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. She will lie in state on Saturday, May 12, 2007 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., the funeral hour at the Pleasant Dale United Methodist Church with the Rev. Conrad Tenney and the Rev. William C. Eskew Jr. officiating. The burial will follow in the Pleasant Dale Church Cemetery in Selbyville, W.Va. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Pleasant Dale UMC Building Fund c/o Vera Gregory, treasurer, HC 78, Box 120, Rock Cave, WV 26234.

The Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
