Pauline Virginia Shaw
Pauline Virginia Shaw, age 86, of Brooksville, FL, died Thursday, May 29, 2008 at Hernando Care Center in Brooksville. She was born May 11, 1922 in Selbysville, WV a daughter of the late Jason E. and Dessie England Huffman. She was preceded in death by her husband Ray Vernon Shaw, two brothers and seven sisters. She is survived by two daughters, Faye Hope of Brooksville and Joann Rohr of Buckhannon, WV; one brother, Arnold "Bud" Huffman of Buckhannon; four step grandchildren; three step great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews; and her friends, Al and Melissa Grissom and Christine and David Cook. Mrs. Shaw was a cook for 22 years at Maggies Restaurant in Buckhannon and a member of the Brooksville Assembly of God Church. She enjoyed embroidery, reading and listening to gospel music. Friends will be received at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home Monday, June 2, 2008 from 6-8 PM. Funeral services will be held 2 PM Tuesday at the Pleasant Dale United Methodist Church in Selbysville, where she will lie in state from 1 PM until 2 PM the funeral hour, with the Rev. Clifford Shaw officiating. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mary Alice Thurman
Mary Alice Thurman, age 89, of Buckhannon, WV died Monday, February 19, 2007 at her home. She was born October 18, 1917 in Buckhannon, WV, a daughter of the late Wilson Palmer and Alice Garrett Allen Barlow. On July 5, 1942 she married William Clark Thurman who preceded her in death on March 24, 1950. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one sister, Elizabeth Allen Barlow and one brother, Wilson Poundstone Barlow. She is survived by one son, William C. Thurman and wife Pamela J. of Buckhannon; one granddaughter, Sara Beth Posey of Morgantown, WV; one sister in law, Mary Lee (Rusmisell) Barlow of High Point, NC; two nephews, Andrew Allen Barlow of Raleigh, NC and Wilson Phillips Barlow of Hartford, CT and one niece, Mary Price Furr of High Point, NC. Mrs. Thurman was an English and Speech Teacher for the Upshur County Board of Education for 38 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, PEO Sisterhood for 60 + years, life member of St. Joseph's Hospital Aux., Emeritus Club at WVWC, Delta Kappa Gamma, Alpha Xi Delta, AAUW, Board Member of Gibson Library, United Methodist Women and the Upshur County Arts Alliance, and a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow. Friends will be received Thursday, February 22, 2007 from 11 AM-1 PM at the First United Methodist Church, with a memorial service at 1 PM at the church, with the Rev. Dr. Charles Godwin and the Rev. Damon Rhodes officiating. Burial will be in the Heavner Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in memory of Mary Alice to the Scholarship Fund at the First United Methodist Church. Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Betty Jo Williams
Betty Jo Williams, age 82 of Buckhannon, WV, died in her home on March 29, 2011 with two grandsons at her side. She was born July 16, 1928 in Beckley, WV the only daughter of the late Basil Clifford Cotton and Bertie Calloway. On April 16, 1971 she married Don Eugene Williams who preceded her in death on February 18, 2010. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one daughter, Vicki Lee Cole. She is survived by her daughter, Debra Moss and husband John of Buckhannon. Upon marrying Don, she inherited four additional children whom she raised along with her own; two daughters Barbara Howes and husband Michael of Sterling, VA and Becky Kittka and husband Joe of Round Hill, VA; two sons, Pat Williams and wife Peggy of Austin, TX and Mike Williams of Coudersport, PA. Also surviving are two granddaughters Lori Tafazoli and husband Dr. Mark Tafazoli of Cullman, AL and Jenny Eggleston and husband Connor of Ashburn, VA; seven grandsons, Chris Cole of Huntsville, AL, Alex Kittka of Round Hill, Jonathan Williams and wife Lindsey of Round Rock, TX, Roger Queen, JC Moss and Jeremy Moss and wife Tina, all of Buckhannon, Dustin Moss and wife Angel of Fort Stewart, GA and Daniel Williams; one son in law, John Paul Cole of Huntsville, AL; and eight great grandchildren. Always a leader and self-sacrificing, Betty Jo served as the editor of her high school yearbook and graduated as valedictorian of Woodrow Wilson High Schools class of 1946. Dependable beyond measure, Betty Jo was always involved in community service during her entire adult life. She actively served in her daughters elementary school PTA and as a Sunday school teacher at Beckleys Methodist Temple. In Buckhannon, she served in many leadership roles, most notably as financial secretary for 24 years at the First United Methodist Church, as president and other offices in American Association of University Women (AAUW) and as president of the Buckhannon Womens Club. Betty Jo, however, was first and foremost a mother. Her mothering style coupled a balanced routine with a direct approach that emphasized self-discipline and tenacity. Friends will be received Friday, April 1, 2011 from 6-8 PM at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Steve Meadows officiating. Burial will follow at the Heavner Cemetery beside her beloved Don in Buckhannon. Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Carl Ray Smith
Carl Ray Smith, age 23, of Ellamore, WV died Monday, June 30, 2008 at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH. He was born January 26, 1985 in Philippi, WV a son of Gladys Smith Riley of Crawford, WV. In addition to his mother he is survived by a step father, John Riley of Crawford; two brothers, Johnny and Charles Riley of Crawford; maternal grandmother, Iris Smith of Ellamore; step grandmother, Kay McCie of OH; several Aunts and Uncles and several Cousins. He had previously been a truck driver for Wendlings. Friends will be received Saturday, July 5, 2008 from 5 to 8 PM at the Poling- St.Clair Funeral Home. The funeral service will be 2 PM Sunday at the funeral home with the Rev. David Jesse officiating. Interment will follow in the Lanham Cemetery in Queens, WV. Sylvia Jean Wolford
Sylvia Jean Wolford, age 69, of Buckhannon, WV died Thursday, March 31, 2011 at her home. She was born August 22, 1941 in Buckhannon, a daughter of the late Robert and Clara Smith Beckner. On October 7, 1960 she married Thomas Wolford who survives. Also surviving are five sons, Robert Wolford and wife Densie, Terry Lynn Wolford and wife Pamela Dawn, Larry Wolford and wife Helen, Gary Wolford and Carroll Wolford and wife Betty all of Buckhannon; three daughters, Sylvia Wolford of Elkview, WV, Tanya Wolford of Buckhannon and Vinnie Ables and husband Donnie of Buckhannon; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; five brothers, Rev. Roger, Barry, Ronnie, Randy and Jackie Beckner all of Buckhannon and two sisters, Diane Thompson of Cleveland, OH and Anita Harris of Buckhannon. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Thomas Wolford, Jr.; two daughters, Patricia Ann Wolford and Debra Jean Wolford; two brothers, Robert Lee and Jerry Beckner and one sister, Susan Augustine. Mrs. Wolford was a homemaker. Friends will be received Sunday, April 3, 2011 from 4-9 PM at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 10 AM Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Roger Beckner officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Union Church Cemetery in Tallmansville, WV. Jean Avanell Wilson
Jean Avanell Wilson, age 90, of Buckhannon, WV and formerly of Weston, WV and Clarksburg, WV died Thursday, December 23, 2010 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Buckhannon. She was born November 17, 1920 in Sutton, WV, a daughter of the late Charles Paul and Myrtle M. McCoy Wilson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Justine Wilson Kidd. She is survived by one son, Jon Scott Wilson of Buckhannon; two brothers, Charles P. Wilson, Jr. and wife Marylee of Charleston, WV and Arden K. Doc Wilson and wife Jeannie of Washington, WV; several nieces, nephews and cousins and three special cousins, Mary F. McCoy of Massillon, OH, Barbara Hopkins of Paden City, WV and Sue Miles-Nichols of Morgantown, WV. Jean was a member of the Buckhannon Union Mission Church and also attended the South Buckhannon Mission Church. She was a born again Christian and an animal lover. She was a graduate from Washington Irving High School in 1940 and West Virginia Business College in 1941. She was a former secretary for DOH District # 7 Headquarters in Weston 21 years of service. Friends will be received Sunday, December 26, 2010 from 6-8 PM at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Monday at the funeral home with Evangelist Charles Morrison officiating. Burial will follow in the Long Point Cemetery at Walkersville, WV. Sumiko Ishikawa Smallridge
Sumiko Ishikawa Smallridge, age 76, of Buckhannon, WV died Saturday, July 5, 2008 at Heartland of Clarksburg. She was born July 18, 1931 in Formosa, Taiwan a daughter of the late Kyosuke and Toyoko Ishikawa . On August 13, 1954 she married Beryl Smallridge who preceded her in death May 22, 1961. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by two sisters, Michiko Sakio and Hiroko Mukaibo. Mrs. Smallridge is survived by a son, Robert Smallridge and wife Pamela of Buckhannon; two daughters, Jerry Kopelov and husband Glenn of Buckhannon and Shirley Tenney and husband Randy of Buckhannon; a brother, Giro Ishikawa of Japan; four grandsons, Bucky Murray of Salt Lake City, UT, R. J. Smallridge of Buckhannon, Drew Smallridge of Buckhannon and J. R. Tenney of Buckhannon; five granddaughters, Carla Peschel and husband Jeff of Hickory, NC, Harmony Kopelov of Lewisburg, WV, Christi Tenney of Morgantown, WV, Shaina Kopelov of Buckhannon and Liana Kopelov of Buckhannon and two great grandsons, Caleb and Connor Peschel of Hickory. She worked for West Virginia Wesleyan College, was a member of First United Methodist Church and belonged to the United Methodist Women. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and attending their various activities. She was an avid supporter of all the youth activities in the county. Friends will be received Wednesday, July 9, 2008 from 5 to 8 PM. A memorial service will follow at 8 PM with Dr. Damon Rhodes officiating. James J. Wiseman
James J. Wiseman, age 84, of Buckhannon, WV died Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at The Heritage in Bridgeport, WV. He was born August 16, 1926 in Taylor Co. WV a son of the late Dennis and Lula Breedlove Wiseman. On September 14, 1947 he married Mary Louise Wiseman who preceded him in death on December 31, 2008. In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by one son James Ray Wiseman. Mr. Wiseman is survived by two daughters, Patty Hewitt and husband Larry and Doretta June Plymale both of Buckhannon; one granddaughter, Kathy Rolenson and husband Joey of Buckhannon; four grandsons, Richard Paul Malcolm, II of Philippi, WV, Bernard Cox of Buckhannon and James and Michael Plymale both of Grafton; one great grandson Logan Paul Rolenson of Buckhannon; one brother, Eugene Wiseman and wife Diane of Philippi, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Wiseman was an auto mechanic and a member of the Church of Christ. During his stay at The Heritage his loving family surrounded him and he will be missed by his family and friends. Friends will be received Saturday, February 19, 2011 from 6-8 PM at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 2 PM on Sunday at the funeral home with Evangelist Darrell Toothman officiating. Burial will be in the WV National Cemetery at Grafton. James R. (Jimmy) Thompson
James R. (Jimmy) Thompson, age 66 of Buckhannon, WV died Sunday, May 25, 2008 at his home. He was born November 26, 1941 at Montgomery, WV, a son of the late George Elmer and Minnie Marie Ward Thompson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Michael Keith Thompson. On February 27, 1981 he married Brenda S. Skaggs who survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Georgia Melody Thompson of Beckley, WV; one son, James R. Thompson, II of Harmony, NC; one grandson, Ronin Jorel Copning-Thompson; best buddies, Frank Hoover and Dutch of Buckhannon and Leonard Lancaster of Hico, WV; one niece, Michelle Alvarez and family of Princeton, WV and one nephew, Michael Keith Thompson, II and family of Summersville, WV. He also has many extended family and friends throughout the United States. Many loving thanks to his caregivers, Tracy Van Norman and family, Roy Chapman, Juanita Andrews and Peoples Hospice. Mr. Thompson was a rock crusher for Stone Co., Inc. and a Catholic by faith. He served in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was a charter and life member of the Eugene Skaggs VFW Post #7695 of Ansted, WV, a 30 year member of the Ansted VFD, Deputy Fire Marshall for the State of WV, a registered EMT with fire and water rescue, a member of the ALERT team and a member of the Knights of Pythias. A memorial service will be held 1 PM, Saturday, June 7, 2008 at VFW Post #7695 in Ansted with Father Roy Gene Crist as celebrant. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be sent to the Eugene Skaggs VFW Post #7695, Main St., Ansted, WV25812. Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Norma A. Simon
Norma A. Simon, of Volga, WV formerly of Century, WV passed away on August 8, 2008 after an extended illness. She was born January 7, 1935 in Bergoo, WV, a daughter of the late Ernest Joe and Nellie McLain. She was married to Charles Chubb Simon on July 31, 1951. He preceded her in death in 2003. She is survived by their six children, Cathy Jody Streets of Buckhannon, WV, Charlene Hardman and husband Don of Vinton, VA, Cheryl Kilmer and companion Richard Shaffer with whom she made her home in Volga, Cindy Spotloe and husband Tim of Century, Charles Farley Simon of Volga and Caryn Simon of Buckhannon; son in law, Charles Streets of Volga; eight grandchildren, Charles Streets, Jr. of Buckhannon, Stephanie Bresette and husband Don of Dayton, OH, Christie Streets and companion Mike Wilson of Philippi, Heather Hardman and companion Billy Lloyd of Vinton, VA, Donald Hardman, II and wife Kristin of Vinton, Jai Kilmer of Volga, Timmy Spotloe of Century and Natacha Summers of Volga; three great-grandchildren, Garrett Streets, Logan Hardman and Jolie Wilson; two very special friends and caregivers, Irene Riffle and Ava Shaffer. In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by her brother Charles Little Joe McLain and her great-grandson, Donald Hardman, III. Norma was with the US Postal Service for 40 years, serving as the postmaster for Rangoon and Century before her retirement in 1992. She was a long standing member of the Century Community Church. Mrs. Simon will be cremated with graveside services to be held at Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery on August 16, 2008 at 1 PM with the Rev. Mildred Endrizzi officiating. In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Simon requests that donations be made in her name to the Century Community Church. Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

William R. Short
William R. Short, 84, of Buckhannon, WV passed away on the morning of Saturday, August 30, 2008 at Colonial Place in Elkins, WV. Bill was an influential and respected member of the Buckhannon Community. He was a former Buckhannon Mayor for 8 yrs., served on Buckhannon City Council for 15 yrs., was past president of WV Municipal League, was past Chairman of the WV Solid Waste Recovery Commission, served on the WV Hospital Board for 3 yrs. and served numerous years on the Buckhannon Water Board. He attended elementary and secondary schools in Upshur County until his junior year in high school when the family moved to Braxton County. He graduated from Gassaway High School in 1941. Bill graduated from WVU in 1948 with a B.S. Degree in Business Administration where he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity and Phi Battar Kappa mock fraternity. His college was interrupted for 3 years during WW II when he enlisted with the 3001st 123rd Signal Corp. of the US Army in 1942 and served 16 months in New Guinea and the Philippine Islands. He received the American Theater and Philippine Liberation Ribbons and one Bronze Star and the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Stars and the WW II Victory Medal. He was a past president of the Buckhannon Lions Club, past president of the Buckhannon Country Club, past Exalted Ruler of the BPOE # 1736, member of Franklin Lodge # 7 AF & AM and Shriners, member of the First United Methodist Church and past president of Buckhannon Chamber of Commerce. In 1978 he was named Buckhannon Citizen of the year. Bill was born December 8, 1923, a son of the late George and Merle DeBarr Short. In 1949 he married Dorothy Dutton and they established a home in Buckhannon where he owned and operated Short Cable and Supply Co. for thirty eight years. In addition to his wife he is survived by one son, Bartley Dutton Short and wife Sharon of Buckhannon; one granddaughter, Carrie Logan Short of Buckhannon and her mother, Becky Sharp of Mingo, WV; one step grandson, David L. Linger of Buckhannon; one step great grandson, Kody D. Linger of Buckhannon; one sister-in-law Elizabeth Betty Hornbeck VanKirk of Stewart, FL; two nephews, David D Hornbeck and wife Judy of Manteo, NC and William R. Hornbeck and wife Margaret of Leesburg, VA; one niece, Ann Hornbeck Taylor of Moss Beach, CA; and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews. Bill was pre-deceased by his son, William Bradford Short. In addition to being a loving husband and devoted father and family man, Bill was an avid skier and enjoyed golfing, dancing, boating, fishing, camping, hunting and other outdoor activities. He was committed to the welfare of Buckhannon and its' citizens; the Bill Short pavilion in the City Park is named in his honor. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to First United Methodist Church of Buckhannon or Hospice Care of Elkins. Friends will be received Monday, September 1, 2008 from 5-9 PM at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 2 PM Tuesday, at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Damon Rhodes and the Rev. Billee Scott Mick officiating. Burial will follow in the Heavner Cemetery. Buckhannon VFW Post # 3663, Frank B. Bartlett Post # 7 American Legion, DAV Chapters # 5 and # 36 will conduct Military Honors at the graveside. Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
