Garfield Allen 'Tom' Smith
Garfield Allen 'Tom' Smith, age 63, of Buckhannon, WV Hodgesville community, died Monday, January 11, 2010 at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, WV. He was born August 17, 1946 in Upshur County, WV a son of the late Hoy Hershel and Madaline Virginia Shreve Smith. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by three daughters, Vicky Landers and twin daughters Jenny and Penny Smith; one grandson, Thomas Smith; one great grandson, Thomas Andrew Smith; one brother, Ernest Smith; and one sister, Frances Harris. On August 23, 1968 he married Helen Roby who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Ellen Tenney of Sand Run, WV and Madaline Bowman and husband Darren Bowman II of Buckhannon; three grandsons, Howard Joseph Landers II and Gilbert and Garrett Tenney all of Buckhannon; four granddaughters, Karen Smith, Joanna Nottingham and husband Jacob and, Elacia and Vicky Bowman all of Buckhannon; four brothers, Frank Smith of Buckhannon, Roger Smith of Roanoke, WV, Melvin and Gilbert Smith both of Buckhannon; five sisters, Judy Smith of Buckhannon, Christene Lipps of Buckhannon, Phyllis Owens of Portage, WI, Priscilla Heckler of Largo, FL and Alice Simpson of Weston, WV. Mr. Smith was a truck driver for GNC and was a Christian by faith. Friends will be received at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home on Thursday, January 14, 2010 from 4-8 PM. Funeral services will be held 2 PM Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Wease Day officiating. Burial will follow in the Simpson Cemetery in Roanoke, WV. On line Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Ernest 'Ernie' Samples
Ernest 'Ernie' Samples, age 59, of Buckhannon, WV died Thursday, January 21, 2010 at United Hospital Center in Clarksburg, WV. He was born October 9, 1950 in Alton, WV, a son of Carrie Ellen Tenney Samples of Buckhannon and the late Jay A. Samples. On June 9, 1976 he married Tammy Jane Hinchman who survives. In addition to his mother and wife he is survived by one son, Ernest R. Ernie Samples, II and companion Liza of Buckhannon; one daughter, Jenny Samples of Buckhannon; three brothers, Kenneth Jay Samples and wife Hester of Marlington, WV, Jimmy G. Jim Samples and wife JoAnn of French Creek, WV and Brian Fay Samples and wife Theresa of Hinkleville, WV; two sisters, Levera Gillum and husband Keith and Lavonda Samples all of Buckhannon and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews. Ernie was a Care Giver. He attended the Independent United Brethren Church and was a volunteer at the Clothes Closet. Friends will be received Saturday, January 23, 2010 from 6-8 PM at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 2 PM Sunday at the funeral home with the Rev. Junior Harris and the Rev. Bill Lanham officiating. Burial will follow in the Upshur County Memorial Park in Tennerton, WV. Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Alicia Jane Smith
Alicia Jane Smith, age 77, of Buckhannon, WV died Saturday, January 23, 2010 at Holbrooks Nursing Home in Buckhannon. She was born May 3, 1932 in Detroit, MI, a daughter of the late William Lomas, Sr. and Celina Fielding Lomas. On June 17, 1967 she married Charles Augustus Smith who preceded her in death on June 16, 2007. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one aunt, Agnes Clara Smith Haddix; one uncle Atha Haddix; three brothers, Everett Lomas, Fred Fielding Lomas and William Lomas, Jr.; one sister, Betty Lou Lomas Kerns and one nephew, Roy Reinsmith. She is survived by one brother, Harold Lomas of Wallace, MI; special cousin, Jim and Joann Bennett and their children of Buckhannon; many nieces, nephews and cousins and many friends. Mrs. Smith was a homemaker. She was a Baptist by Faith. She also liked to walk, watch TV and spend time with her friends and neighbors. A Special Thanks to St. Joseph's Hospice, Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center of Morgantown and Holbrooks Nursing Home. Friends will be received at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 26, 2010 from 1-2 PM the funeral hour with Pastor Jerry Murrell officiating. Burial will follow in the Bethel Church Cemetery at Audra, WV. Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Gary Marion Samples
Gary Marion Samples, age 58, of Rock Cave, WV died Sunday, April 18, 2010 at his home. He was born June 9, 1951 in Buckhannon, WV, a son of the late Marion and Edna Burnside Samples. On December 27, 1986 he married Sally Ann Swiger, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Travis Scott Samples of Rock Cave and Gary Wayne Samples and wife Trina of Medina, OH and two granddaughters, Kayla and Daisy Samples, both of Medina. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Cecil and Glenn Samples. Mr. Samples was a Christian by faith. Friends will be received at the Salem Ridge United Methodist Church on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 from 12 Noon until 2 PM the funeral hour with the Revs. Dan and Sue Lowther officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the family to help with the funeral expenses. Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

John Frederick Scott
John Frederick Scott, age 67, of Buckhannon, West Virginia died on May 31, 2010, at the Louis A. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center in Clarksburg, West Virginia. He was born in Buckhannon on October 26, 1942, the son of the late Minnie Esther Scott and Charles Frederick Lemon. At the end of World War II, his parents divorced, and he was adopted and raised by his maternal grandparents, the late John Bogue Scott and Blanche Kerr Scott of Buckhannon. John was a 1960 graduate of Buckhannon-Upshur High School, and a 1967 graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in political science. He also attended Rutgers-Newark College and West Virginia University. John enlisted in the United States Army following his freshman year at Wesleyan, serving as an information specialist, and participated with the First Armored Division during the Cuban Missile Crisis. All tolled, John amassed more than 45 years in journalistic communications. His professional career included employment with The Republican Delta during high school and college, beat reporter for the Morgantown Dominion News, state capitol and political reporter for the Charleston Daily Mail, state capitol reporter for United Press International, and editor-in-chief of the Record Delta. His professional experience further included seven years of service as executive director for the West Virginia Republican State Committee, communications director for Kanawha County schools, and assistant executive secretary for the West Virginia School Boards Association. John returned to his hometown in 1990, where he continued his labor of love for his alma mater, West Virginia Wesleyan College, serving as the Colleges Director of News Services for nearly five years. A gifted writer, John was hired by the Record Delta in 1995, becoming the newspapers editor-in-chief. John earned numerous press awards from the WV Press Association during his many years with the Delta. John was honored in 2002 by the West Virginia Division of Culture and History with the West Virginia History Heroes Award, that recognizes the dedication and labor of those going beyond the call of duty to ensure the success of local history, genealogy, preservation and museum organizations. He retired from the Delta in 2003, but remained very active working for Wesleyan on many projects and becoming involved in a number of civic projects and local political campaigns. John loaned his wordsmith skills to the 2015 Plan assisting the Planning Commission in realizing the community plan currently being considered for adoption by the Buckhannon City Council. On May 17, 2010, John became the first recipient of the Buckhannon-Upshur Chamber of Commerces Unsung Hero Award for his behind-the-scene contributions to his hometown. He served as a member of the City of Buckhannons Planning Commission and Animal Care and Control Commission. Johns unique writing style and bubbly personality endeared him to many. He is survived by his brother, Michael Saggese, of Caldwell, New Jersey, cousin Sonja Scott Bayless of Mt. Claire, West Virginia, and former wives, Tina Holmes of Charleston, and Ann Powell of Martinsburg. In addition to his parents and grandparents, he was preceded in death by his uncle David Scott, and his step-father, John Saggese of Paducah, Kentucky. In lieu of flowers, John Scott requested that friends make contributions in his memory to the John Frederick Scott Liberal Arts Scholarship Fund at West Virginia Wesleyan College. Friends will be received at the West Meditation Chapel in the West Virginia Wesleyan College Martin Religious Center on Wednesday, June 2, from 1-4 and 6-9 PM. Services will be conducted in Wesley Chapel on Thursday, June 3, at 11:00 a.m., with Wesleyans Dean of the Chapel, the Reverend Angela Gay Kinkead presiding. Interment will follow in Heavner Cemetery. Buckhannon VFW # 3663, Frank B. Bartlett Post # 7 American Legion, DAV Chapters # 5 & # 36 will conduct military honors at the graveside. Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Shirley Ann Scott
Shirley Ann Scott, age 73, of Buckhannon, WV died Saturday, July 10, 2010 at her home under the care of St. Joseph's Hospice. She was born August 24, 1936 in Buckhannon, a daughter of the late Hughey and Lula Cochran Westfall. On July 14, 1955 she married Daniel R. Scott who preceded her in death on February 5, 2000. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Gary Scott; one grandson, Gregory Stephen Scott; two sisters, Lucille Anderson and Juanita Cline and one brother, Woodford Westfall. She is survived by one sister, Ima Gean Brake and husband Loren of Wilmington, DE; several nieces, nephews and cousins and long time friend, Lois Cutright of Buckhannon. Mrs. Scott was a homemaker and a Christian by faith. Graveside services will be held 11 AM Saturday, July 17, 2010 at the Heavner Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Joseph M. Shreve officiating. Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Fred 'Butch' Brooks Wood
Fred 'Butch' Brooks Wood, age 72, of Buckhannon, WV died Sunday, July 04, 2010 at the Louis A. Johnson V.A. Medical Center in Clarksburg, WV. He was born March 4, 1938 in Century, WV a son of the late Fred and Audrey Green Wood. On December 9, 1968 he married Leona J. Walter who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Matthew Wood and wife Michelle and Stanley A. Wood all of Buckhannon; one daughter Rosemarie Sinclair and husband Bryan of Buckhannon; eight grandchildren; two sisters Madeline Russell and husband Garnet of Ellamore, WV and Judith Heavner and husband George of Canton, OH; three brothers, Max Wood and wife Sandra, Richard Wood and wife Carol all of PA and Barry Wood and Jennifer of WV. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Jim Wood and three sisters, Ruby Simons, Faye Wood and Mary Shock. Mr. Wood was a coal miner for the Badger Coal Co., served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the Faith Tabernacle Church. He loved hunting, fishing and gardening and was a devout Christian. Friends will be received Tuesday, July 6, 2010 from 12 to 1 PM at the Faith Tabernacle Church. Funeral Services will be held at 1 PM on Tuesday at the Church with the Rev. Jimmy Russell, Rev. Lester Boylen and Rev. Roger Beckner officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery in Philippi, WV. VFW Post #3663, Frank B. Bartlett Post # 7 American Legion and DAV Chapters #5 and #36 will conduct military honors at the graveside. Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Herbert L. Sharp
Herbert L. Sharp, age 89, of Buckhannon, WV died, Saturday, October 2, 2010 at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, WV. He was born on July 20, 1921 in Cairo, WV a son of the late Harl and Carrie Shields Sharp. On August 20, 1950 he married Mabelle Grace Cokeley who preceded him in death on August 25, 2005. Mr. Sharp is survived by three sons Kevin Sharp and wife Vicki of Buckhannon, Gary Sharp and wife Jamie of Charles Town, WV and Steve Sharp and wife Kathy of Poolsville, MD; two daughters, Norrine Scherler and husband Bill of Somerset, NJ and Cathy Sharp of Queens, NY; three grandsons, David Scherler of Washington, D.C., Adam and Austin Sharp of Charles Town, WV; four granddaughters Allison Sharp of Martinsburg, WV, Alicia Sharp of Fairmont, WV, Laura Scherler of Alexandria, VA. and Kate Scherler of Somerset, NJ; one sister Clara June Wyatt of Urbandale, IA and good friend and companion Lucille Warner of Buckhannon. In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by one brother Arthur Sharp. Mr. Sharp served in the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant during WWII and received a Purple Heart. He was a life long member of Rotary International and a Past District Governor serving in 1977. After WWII he graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College. He returned to WVWC and worked as a fundraisor for the College from 1967 to 1988. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was a Sunday school teacher for 28 years and a lay leader. He was an active volunteer in the St. Joseph's Hospital Auxiliary and served as the first male president in the Auxiliarys history. He was an avid supporter for all WVWC athletics enjoying all sporting events. Mr. Sharp was dedicated to his family, the church, WVWC and the community. Friends will be received Tuesday, October 5, 2010 form 2-8 PM at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held 1 PM Wednesday, at the First United Methodist Church in Buckhannon with the Rev. Steven Meadows officiating. Burial will follow in the Buckhannon Veterans Cemetery. Buckhannon VFW Post #3663, Frank B. Bartlett Post #7 American Legion, DAV Chapters #5 & #36 will conduct military honors at the graveside. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Herbert L. Linda Margaret Bland Smith
Linda Margaret Bland Smith, age 66, of Buckhannon, WV the Excelsior Community died Saturday, October 23, 2010 at her home. She was born May 9, 1944 in Wetzel Co. a daughter of the late John and Edna Burton Bland. On December 24, 1999 she married Allen K. Slick Smith who survives. In addition to her husband she is survived by one daughter, Jodi Stoffel and husband Gregory of Beallsville, OH; one son Dean Fitzsimmons and wife Kim of St. Marys WV; two step sons, James Smith of Miami, FL and Brian Smith and wife Peggy of Bemis, WV; 9 grandchildren; one brother, Larry Bland of Holbrook, PA and one sister, Erma Pfender of Shreveport, LA. She was the owner and operator of Lindas Rustic Corner. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Friends will be received Monday, October 25, 2010 from 5-9 PM at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held 2:30 PM on Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Tim Lewis officiating. Burial will follow at the Sand Run Baptist Church Cemetery. Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Ida Skarya
Ida Skarya, age 76, of Volga, WV died Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at home. She was born November 28, 1933 in Pursglove, WV, a daughter of the late Paul and Natalia Zeni Endrizzi. On October 23, 1952 she married Albert D. Skarya who preceded her in death on August 18, 1984. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Joseph Skarya, two sisters, Theresa Giles and Norma Travinski. She is survived by one daughter, Linda Skarya Rice her husband Jeff, children and grandchildren of Volga, WV; three sons, Albert Skarya, Jr. his wife Connie, children and grandchildren of Philippi, WV, John Skarya of Volga, WV and Stephen Skarya of Jessup, MD; one granddaughter, Michelle Rukavina, great grandson, Angelo Mitchell and his father Bryan Mitchell of Volga, one grandson, Matt Rukavina, his wife Adriana and great granddaughter, Isabel Rukavina of Las Vegas, NV. Mrs. Skarya was a homemaker and a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Friends will be received at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home Thursday, November 11, 2010 from 4-9 PM with a prayer service at 6 PM. Mass Of Christian Burial will be held 10 AM Friday at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church with Father Ronald Nikodem as Celebrant. Burial will follow in the Heavner Cemetery. Betty Jo Sandy
Betty Jo Sandy, age 78, of Buckhannon, WV died Wednesday, November 24, 2010 at her home. She was born December 29, 1931 at Evergreen, WV a daughter of the late Albert and Nina Tenney Morrison. On August 7, 1948 she married James H. Sandy who preceded her in death on March 27, 1984. She is survived by two daughters, Angelina Carpenter and husband Freeman of Buckhannon and Linda Szuchy and husband Frank of Ambridge, PA; one son, Gary Lee Sandy and wife Janet of French Creek, WV; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and one brother Charles Morrison and wife Ruth of Parkersburg, WV. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one son James C. Sandy, and seven brothers and sisters. Mrs. Sandy was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Friends will be received Sunday, November 28, 2010 from 6-8 PM at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held 2 PM on Monday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Pleasant Dale Church Cemetery at Selbyville, WV.
