Joe Baisden

Joe S. Baisden, 93, of Dingess, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at his home.

Born Nov. 24, 1907, at Kermit, he was a son of the late John Smith Baisden and Matildia (Ferrell) Baisden.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Albert, Moses and Robert Baisden; three sisters, Lou Baisden, Eliza (Baisden) Moore and Elizabeth Baisden; two sons, Pinky and Daniel Baisden; one granddaughter, Teresa Lynn May; one son-in-law, John Wesley (Toby) Tomblin; two daughters-in-law, Naomi (Harris) Baisden and Karen (Harris) Baisden.

He was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his wife, Beatrice (Hannah) Baisden; three sons, Carles (Rosa) Baisden of Delbarton, Curtiss Baisden of Arcadia, K.S. Kenneth (Donetta) Baisden of Dingess; seven daughters, Tildia (Arthur) May of Breeden, Thelma (Donald) Tennant of Villa Park, Ill., Eliza (Gid) Vance of Dingess, Joan Baisden of Radcliffe, Ky., Elma Lou (Hank) Czyzewski of West Chicago, Ill., Edna Biggerstaff of Verdunville, Adella Gail (Harry) Runyon of Dingess; nineteen grandchildren, Regina (Rick) Browning of Breeden, April Tennant of Gilbert, Ariz., Jeffery Tennent of Addison Ill., Beatrice Babs (Mike) Altizer of Hardy, Ky., Joey (Glenda) Baisden of Mathews, N.C., Curtiss Ray (Shelia) Baisden of Richfield, Minn., Melissa (Wendell) Moore of Dunlow, Donna (Jason) Booth of Dingess, Paula (Joe) Harris of Radcliffe, Ky., Kenny Baisden, Bruce Vance, Doug (Sally) Vance, all of Dingess, Dwayne Williamson of Columbus, Ohio, Michael Williamson of Wadsworth, Ohio, Becky (Rusty) Jordan of Radcliffe, Gerald D. Biggerstaff of Cleveland, Ohio, Jason Biggerstaff, Teresa and Glen Dale Runyon, all of Dingess; 21 great-grandchildren, Timmy, Anthony and Patrick Browning of Breeden, Nicole Most of Gilbert, Ariz., Michelle and Chris Altizer of Hardy, Ky., Allie Baisden of Mathews, N.C., Deanna, Crystal and Max Baisden of Richfield, Minn., Jason, Jr. and Kara Dawn Booth, Michael and Ashley Baisden, Melissa Dawn Baisden, Shane and Fancie Dempsey, all of Dingess, Katelyn and Kristyn Harris, Mattie Bryant, Zach Jordan, Hunter Jordan, all of Radcliffe; and a host of neices and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 1, at Mount Hope Freewill Baptist Church at Dingess, with the Reverands Curtiss Booth and James Ed Baisden officiating.

Burial will follow at the May Cemetery at Marrowbone, Kermit.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Tennant, Joey Baisden, Kenny Baisden, Jerry and Jason Biggerstaff, Dwayne and Michael Williamson, Bruce and Doug Vance, Curtiss Ray Baisden, Timmy Browning and Glenn Dale Runyon. Honorary pallbearers will be Arthur May, Don Tennant, Gid Vance, Harry Runyon, Hank Czyzewski, Rick Browning, Wendell Moore, Mile Altizer, Joe Harris, Rusty Jordan, Jason Booth, Don Williams, Emmet Williamson and Wesley Biggerstaff.

Visitation will be held after 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31, at the church.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home.

James Bono

James Arthur Bono, 68, of Borderland, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at Williamson Memorial Hospital.

Born Dec. 12, 1933, in Williamson, he was the son of the late Steve and Pearl Tincher Bono.

He was retired from the W.V. Department of Highways.

He is survived by hi wife Pat Parsley Bono; daughter Sandra (Crayton) Runyon of Borderland; brothers Walter Bono of Turkey Creek and Robert Bono of Williamson; sister Martha Venturino of Williamson; grandson Shane Runyon; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001, at the Weaver Mortuary Chapel will Revs. Allen Shouse and Wesley Wickard officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. View Memory Garden, Huddy, Ky.

Visitation will be Wednesday evening, Oct. 31, 2001, from 6 - 9 in the Weaver Mortuary Chapel.

Pallbearers will be Mark Bono, Brad Bono, Bob Chapman, Kenneth Neal, Kenneth Neal II, Kevin Hackney, Gary Venturino.

Hascal Clay

Hascal Clay, 80, of Robinette, died after a long illness on Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, at Williamson Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 1, 1921, in Wayne County, he was a son of the late Frances German and Viola Finley Clay.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Stewart Clay; four brothers, Boyd Ancil, Gentry and George Clay; and three sisters, Sally Adkins, Fredis Sanders and Verlie Perry Baker.

He was a retired coal miner, formerly employed with Buffalo Mining Company and Pittston Coal Company for 43 years, and a member of the United Mine Workers of America, local 8454.

He is survived by one son, Michael Clay of Lundale; two brothers, Elmer and Hubert Clay of Wayne County; six grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001, at Krantz-McNeely Funeral Home Chapel in Man, with the Rev. Denver McClellan, Jr. officiating.

Burial will follow in Clay-Fraley Cemetery in Wayne County.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. on Wednesday, and one hour prior to time of service on Thursday, Oct. 31, at the funeral home.

Robert Phillips

Robert "Buddy" Lawrence Phillips, Sr., of Cincinnati, Ohio, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, at Christ Hospital.

Born September 10, 1943, in Cinderella, he was the son of the late Isom Sr. and Marie Obey Phillips.

An all-around outstanding football, basketball and baseball player at Liberty High School, he graduated in 1962, and attended Bluefield State College on a football and basketball scholarship. He was a member of the Mt. Sinai Baptist Church and worked for Cincinnati Milacron for 31 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Earnest Ray Phillips, Sr., niece Deborah Washington and nephew Vincent Starling.

He is survived by his wife Ruth J. Phillips; son Robert Phillips, Jr., daughter Marie E. Phillips, all of Cincinnati, Ohio; sisters Mollie Starling (Charles Sr.) of Long Island, N.Y., Arlet (Craig) Eldrige of Williamson; brothers Ison Phillips Jr. of Cleveland, Norman (Mary) and Jackie (Sheila) Phillips, both of Williamson, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 7 p.m. Nov. 2, 2001 at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, Cincinnati with the Rev. R. Nathaniel Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow at Spring Grove Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Pallbearers will be Charles Starling, Doug Starling, Victor Starling, Kirk Phillips, Jackie Lee Phillips, Jr., Ray Phillips III, Eric Brown, Orlando Jackson, and Robert W. Phillips.

The funeral is under the direction of Jamison & Jamison JR., Inc., Funeral Directors.

Benjamin Pack
Benjamin "Bennie" Pack, 72, of Michigan, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2001.

Born in Lovely, Ky., on Oct. 26, 1929, he was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.

He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company after 31 1/2 years of service.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Alma; a son, Benjamin (Nancy) Pack; two daughters, Beth Ann (Jose) Lora and Theresa (Merlin) May; six grandchildren, Aisleen, Gus and Ben Pack, Nicole Lora, Corrin and Trisha May; three brothers, Jack, Ked and Jim Pack; two sisters, Ruth Chafin and Wilma Dean James, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Mass was held on Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, at St. John Catholic Church in Jackson, Mich., with Rev. James Shaver officiating. Burial followed at St. John Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to St. John Church or the American Heart Association would be appreciated.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Desnoyer Funeral Home.

Maywood Williams
Maywood Williams, 74, of South Charleston, died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at his home after a long illness.

He was a certified life underwriter and was a retired district sales manager for Nationwide Insurance Company. He was an Air Force veteran of WWII and was a member of the Dunbar Church of the Nazarene. He had been a resident of South Charleston for 40 years.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Midkiff Williams; a son, Darrell Keith Williams of South Charleston; a daughter, Sheila Gay (Ed) Mucklow; a brother, Keith (Connie) Whitten of Cross Lanes; a sister, Sue Sizemore of Michigan, and grandchildren Susan and Steven Hooper of Huntington.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at the Dunbar Church of the Nazarene with the Revs. Philip Bowles and Franklin W. Goff officiating.

Burial will follow in Cunningham Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.

Richard Holbrook
Richard Holbrook, 79, of Oak Hill, Ohio formerly of Yolyn, WV, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001 in Logan General Hospital, Logan, WV.

Born Oct. 12, 1928, in Elliott County, KY, he was the son of the late Lan and Myrtle Fields Holbrook. He was also preceded in death by a son, Richard Herman Holbrook and great granddaughter Ashlee Lorraine Glandon.

He was a retired coal miner for Amherest Coal Company and a deacon in the Yoln Community Church.

He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Barley Holbrook, Oak Hill; son, Lan Morris (Jennie) Bolbrook, Man, WV; two daughters, Lilly (David) Collins, Commerice Township, Mich. and Lois (David) Sluss, Yolyn; sister Catherine (Mason) Glenn, Greenville, WV; 11 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, two nieces and one nephew.

Active pallbearers will be Johnny Ray Owsley, Eddie Ferrell, Bill Stevens, Larry Mauk, Ricky Lowe and Hubert "Skeeter" Lowe.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Wed., Jan. 2, 2002, at Mounts Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John McClung officiating. Burial will be at Holbrook Family Cemetery, Gilbert.

Visitation will be at the Mounts Funeral Home Chapel, Gilbert, Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Mounts Funeral Home of Gilbert, WV is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Edna Vinson
Edna "Granny" Curry Vinson, 95, of Elk Creek, in Delbarton, passed away Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, in the Logan General Hospital.

Born March 30, 1906, in Bias, W. Va., she was the daughter of the late Floyd and Lucinda Curry.

She was also preceded in death by her stepmother, Sarah Carey Curry.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Leck Vinson and son Evert Vinson; brothers, Lloyd, Boyd and Monroe Curry; sisters, Jane Murphy and Lucinda Blankenship; half-brothers, Wilburn, Ance, Woodrow, Grover and Virgil Curry; half-sisters Annie Runyon and Fannie Sipple.

She was a loving mother and granny to all who knew her. She operated a small country store on Elk Creek for more than 40 years. She loved and was loved by all who knew her. She was a member of the Sardis Old Regular Baptist Church of Delbarton.

She is survived by her son Floyd Curry Vinson of Elk Creek; daughters, Flossie Irene Estep of Chattaroy and Lucy Helen Aliff of Garrettsville, Ohio; special grandson, William (Kimberly) Vinson of Elk Creek; granddaughter, Beauta Degenero of Ohio, and Barbara Mullins of North Carolina; special niece, Lillian Campbell of Varney; and 26 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren, and 20 great-great grandchildren.

Nieces, nephews and special friends along the way during her life, they were special to her.

Funeral services will be held at the Sardis Old Regular Baptist Church on Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at noon with Elder Billy Brumfield officiating.

Burial will follow in the Curry/Farley Cemetery at Elk Creek.

Pallbearers will be friends and family. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Visitation will be held at the Chafin Funeral Home at Delbarton from 6-9 p.m. Monday with special services starting at 7 p.m.

Woodrow May
Woodrow Buster May, 85, of Thacker, died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at the Appalachian Regional Hospital in South Williamson, Ky.

Born Sept. 23, 1916, he was a son of the late James Harvey and Mary Elizabeth May.

He was a retired coal miner, a member of the Lynn Freewill Baptist Church and a member of the local 8840.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Harris May; two sons, Clarence and Michael Alexander May; four sisters; and two brothers.

Survivors include five sons, Lyle Terry (Judy) May of Huntington, Roger Lee (Ruby) May, Carl David (Shirley) May, Timothy Dean (Janie) May, John Harvey (Ruth) May, all of Thacker; five daughters, Mary Elizabeth Stapleton of Huntington, Helen Prscilla Murphy of Thacker, Jancis Sue Wallen of Lick Creek, Sherri (Dewey) Spencer of Phelps, Ky. and Ella Louise May of Thacker; one brother, Grady May of Sparks, Nev.; one sister, Rhonda Hatfield of Delbarton; 18 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at noon on Saturday, Dec. 15, at the Lynn Freewill Baptist Church with Bro. Bill Mosley and Bro. Lonnie Francis officiating.

Burial will follow in the Harris Cemetery at Thacker #11 Hollow.

Pallbearers will be Lyle Terry, Roger Lee, Carl David, Timothy Dean, John Harvey May and Dewey Spencer.

Visitation will begin at noon on Thursday, Dec. 13 at the church.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Phelps Funeral Services of Phelps, Ky.
