Prentus Evans, Jr.
Prentus Evans, Jr., 72, of Delbarton, passed away Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, in the Appalachian Regional Hospital in South Williamson, Ky.

Born April 14, 1929, in Delbarton, he was a son of the late George and Bertha Evans Martin.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers.

He was a disabled coal miner and a veteran of the United States Army, having served in the Korean conflict.

Survivors include seven sons, George, Prentus, Ronnie, Larry and Rocky Evans of Delbarton, Eddie Evans of Ragland and Michael Evans of Atlanta, Ga.; one daughter, Marsha Morrison of Delbarton; one sister, Patsy Tickle of Cambridge, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be conducted at noon on Thursday, Dec. 13, at the Sardis Old Regular Baptist Church, with the elders of the church officiating.

Burial will follow in the Evans Cemetery at Delbarton.

Sons will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 12, at the Chafin Funeral Home in Delbarton, with special services at 7 p.m.

Veterans Rites will be performed by DAV Chapter 141 at the cemetery.

Melvin Messer, Jr.
Melvin Messer, Jr., 51, of Crum, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at Three Rivers Medical Center.

Born Sept. 22, 1950, in Mingo County, he was a son of Melvin and Lexie Messer.

He was a retired construction worker for Mountain Enterprise.

Survivors include three daughters, Patricia Lynn, Mary Lou and Virginia Ann Messer, all of Marion, Ohio; two sisters, Patricia Wimer of Columbus, Ohio, and Janice Black; two brothers, Charles Ray Clevin and Carl Messer, and two grandsons, Cody Ray and Davidson Keith Messer.

Funeral services will be conducted at noon on Saturday, Dec. 15, at Old Jennies Creek United Baptist Church with Freddie Messer, Jr. officiating.

Burial will follow in the Hodge Cemetery at Kermit.

Visitation began at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 13, at the church.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home.

Eugene Daniels
Eugene Keith Daniels, 25, of Delbarton, died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at Varney.

Born Sept. 18, 1976, at Williamson, he was a son of Burgess Eugene Daniels and Darleen Prater.

He was employed as a construction worker.

Survivors include his fiancee, Carla Bradford; one son, Bryan Keith Daniels of Varney; two brothers, Travis Daniels and Ronnie Lee Prater, and three sisters, Leanne Prater of Delbarton, Legenia Daniels of Varney and Cecilia Prater.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 16, at the Woodman Community Church with the Reverends Otis Blankenship, Ron Pruitt and DeWitt Furrow officiating.

Burial will follow in the Woodman Cemetery.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 14, at the church. A special service will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Phelps Funeral Services of Phelps, Ky.

Shannon Tackett, Sr.
Shannon Tackett, Sr., 80 of Mooresville, N.C., formerly of the Delbarton area, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, in the Lake Norman Regional Hospital in Mooresville.

Born Feb. 27, 1921, at Laurel Creek, he was a son of the late John and Sarah Runyon Tackett.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Joe, Ford and Russell Tackett.

He was a retired coal miner and a veteran of the United States Airforce.

Survivors include two sons, Lenorad Tackett and Shannon Tackett, both of Statesville, N.C.; two stepsons, Preston Berry and Lester Berry, Jr., both of Mooresville; four daughters, Cordia K. Tabor and Trula Varney, both of Mooresville, Belina Estepp of Delbarton and Effie Dingess of Williamson; two stepdaughters, Judy Runyon of Delbarton and Devonda Blevins of Belo; 25 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, at the Chafin Funeral Home, with the Rev. Paul Ray Davis officiating.

Burial will follow in the Gap Hollow Cemetery at Laurel Creek.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 14, at the funeral home.

Eugene Adams
Eugene Scott Adams, 50, of Charleston, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at his residence.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Mounts Funeral Home of Gilbert.

Dana Daniels
Dana Laura Daniels, 73, of Blackberry City, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, in Saint Mary's Hospital in Huntington.

Born March 31, 1928, in Freeburn, Ky., she was a daughter of the late Ferrell Coleman and Helen Frances Marcum.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Randy Daniels, and two grandsons, Douglas Allen and Blaine Kamalli.

She was a homemaker, a wonder wife and mother, and was of the Holiness faith.

Survivors include one son, David Daniels of Honolulu, Hawaii; four daughters, Helen Edwards of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Kathy Wolford, Rhonda Simpkins and Teresa Allen, all of Huntington; one sister, Della Ray Maynard of Tennessee; a cousin, Sandra Keaton of Columbus, Ohio; 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 7, at the Chambers Funeral Home in Matewan, with ministers Johnny Gooslin and Ronnie Wolford officiating.

Burial will follow in the Mountain View Memory Gardens at Huddy, Ky.

Grandsons and sons-in-law will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 6, with special services at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Elizabeth Hall
Elizabeth Marie Hall, 64, of Bristol, Tenn., formerly of North Spring, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at the Bristol Regional Medical Center.

Born March 21, 1937, in Lyburn, she was a daughter of the late Newman (Moon) and Mattie Davis Grant.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her ex-husband, Harrison J. Hall, and two stepsons, Elmer Ray Hatfield and Charles Matthew Warren.

She was a member of the Church of God faith.

Survivors include five sons, James Richard Rowe of Bristol, Billy (Gail) Hall of North Spring, James Douglas (Sherry) Hall of Gallipolis, Ohio, Harrison Jr. (Rena) Hall of Bristol and Thomas Maynard of Lorado; nine daughters, Karen Kay Englehardt of Woodstock, Ill., Ernestine May of Wharncliffe, Patricia Louise Rowe of Bristol, Mary Ann Harrison of Mallory, Ida Marie Wingler of Bristol, Juanita Marie Hall of Lavonia, Mich., and Michelle Ellen Hall, Mary Elizabeth Rowe and Anna Marie Green, all of Bristol; two sisters, Janice Sheppard of Mishawaka, Ind., and Donna Sue Davis of Williamson; two brothers, William Donald Grant of Smithville and Raymond Grant of Mallory; 33 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 6, at the Mounts Funeral Home Chapel in Gilbert, with the Rev. Danny May officiating.

Burial will follow in the Hall Family Cemetery at North Spring.

Active pallbearers will be Billy Ray May, Michael Lee Hall, Tippy Potter, Thomas Maynard, Jose Rangel and Dustin Hall. Honorary pallbearers will be Everett Grant and Michael Cox.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 5, at the funeral home.

George Phillips, Jr.
Mr. George Phillips, Jr., 81, of Raleigh, N.C., died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, in the Wellington Nursing Center in Knightdale, N.C.

Mr. Phillips was born in McDowell County, on July 22, 1920, the son of the late George and Sarah White Phillips. He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Altice Phillips.

Mr. Phillips was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Navy and was also a member of the Crabtree Valley Baptist Church. In his later years, Mr. Phillips spent a lot of time helping out at Carolina Sofa of Raleigh.

Surviving are one daughter, Deborah Sasser and husband Dave of Raleigh; one grandson, George Bradford Sasser; one brother, Elwood Phillips of Rogersville, Ala.; four sisters, Mary Payne of Indianapolis, Ind., Alberta Day of Welch, Greta Roper of Midlothian, Ill., and Loretta Rose of Kimball.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, in the Crabtree Valley Baptist Church with the Rev. Brad Ferguson officiating.

Interment will follow in Raleigh Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 5, at the Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh, N.C.

Eugene Smith
Eugene B. Smith, 76, of Lexington, husband of Virginia "Ginny" L. Smith, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at Saint Joseph's Hospital.

A native of Belfry, Ky., he was a son of the late marvin and Mary Keesee Smith.

He was a retired salesman for Ford Motor Company.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Terry E. Smith of Michigan; a daughter, Melissa Smith of Tennessee; two step-children, Mark Geoghegan and his wife, Susan, and Keith Geoghegan and his wife, Jill; seven grandchildren, Michelle McCombie, Tracy Zeestratton, Roxanne Sprow, Wendy Johnson, Ashley Smith, Brian Geoghegan and Mallory Geoghegan; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Debbie Ireson and her husband, Bill of Belfry and Lois Fain and her husband, Bill, of Florida; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Steve and Mark Smith.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 6, at Christ Centered Church, 2275 Eastland Parkway, Lexington, with Pastor Tommy Howard officiating.

Burial was held in the Lexington Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Ken Zeestratton, Kevin Smith, Michael Mohon, Charley Oliver, George Urfer and Eddie Smith.

Honorary pallbearers were Roger Jayne, Kenneth Jayne, Terry Etherton, Charles (Fuzzy) Keesee, Lawson King and Harry Sizemore.

In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to Christ Centered Church Building Fund, 2275 Eastland Parkway, Lexington, Ky., 40505.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Kerr Brothers Funeral Home of Lexington.
