Eddie A. Starr
Eddie A. Starr, 57, of Williamson, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, in Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital.

Born June 3, 1944, in Williamson, he was a son of the late Arnold Jackson Starr and Velma Damron Starr.

He was a salesman for Stowers Fire and Safety and a member of the Williamson Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Survivors include his wife, JoAnn Stowers Starr; two sons, Jason Starr of Winder, Ga., and Brian Starr of Williamson; two daughters, Donna Michelle Starr of Denver, Colo., and Kay Thaxton of Williamson; five brothers, Paul Starr, Bobby Starr, Dwayne Starr and Dana Starr, all of Williamson, and Carlton Starr of Charleston; two sisters, Loretta Steele of Williamson and Brenda Bean of Ft. Gay, and three grandchildren, David, Amber and Matthew Thaxton, all of Williamson.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at Weaver Mortuary Chapel in Williamson, with Pastor Daniel Morikone officiating.

Burial will follow in Mt. View Memory Gardens at Maher.

Brothers will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Williamson Seventh Day Adventist Church at 1110 Midland Ave., Williamson, WV 25661.

Lizzie Messer
Lizzie "Sue" Messer, 74, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, in Grant Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio.

She was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by sisters and brothers, Ida Bowens, Polly Rainbolt, Don Estepp, Wilbur Estepp and Emily Estepp.

Survivors include her husband of 42 years, Willie Messer; children, Escum "Bud" (Eileen) Messer, Gail (Oscar) Perry, Peggy Douglas, Glen (Debbie) Messer, Paul David (Lucy) Messer; grandchildren, Tabitha (Mark) Fry, Mary Jane Messer, Vickie (Bret) Scythes, Adam Perry, Kimmie (Greg) Highfield, Kevin Douglas, Brandy (John) Rolinette, Tracey (Chris) Burlingame, Courtney Messer, Alex Messer, Gennifer Messer and McKenzie Messer; great-grandchildren, Andy, Cory, Austin, Montgomery, Terry, Austin, Kacey and Christopher; sisters, Georgie Hodge, Rosie (Bill) Reeder and Noretta (Jerry) Lowe, and brother, John (Helen) Estepp.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at Evans Funeral Home at 4171 E. Livingston Ave. in Columbus, with the Rev. Russell Messer and Pastor John Adams officiating.

Interment will follow in Glen Rest Cemetery in Reynoldsburg, Ohio.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at the funeral home.

Myrtle Parlsey
Myrtle M. Parsley, 97, passed away Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002 at Whetstone Care Center.

She was a retired executive housekeeper for Childrens Hospital, and member of Heritage Freewill Baptist Church.

Mrs. Parsley was preceded in death by husband, Lloyd; and sisters, Mae Hensley and Virginia Hannah.

Survivors include daughters, June I. (James S.) Marcum of Goldsboro, N.C., and Connie (Lee) Botkin of Worthington, Ohio; grandson, Reverend Jim (Vicki) Marcum; granddaughter, Michelle Lee Botkin; great granddaughters, Melissa and Sarah Marcum; sisters, Edna Rummel and Polly Baker; nieces and nephews.

Friends may call Woodyard East Chapel, 2300 E. Livingston Ave., on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.

Funeral service will be held at The Heritage Freewill Baptist Church, 575 Obetz Rd., on Monday at 11 a.m. with the Revs. Tim Stout and Jim Marcum officiating. Interment will follow at Central Cemetery, Westerville, Ohio.

Clifford Blankenship
Clifford Eugene Blankenship, 72, of Bull Creek (Mohawk) died at 10 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at Bluefield Regional Hospital, Bluefield, W. Va.

A retired coal miner, Mr. Blankenship was a member of the UMWA and of the Freewill Baptist faith.

Born May 18, 1929 in Argo, Ky., he was a son of the late Harve and Lonnie (Hurley) Blankenship.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two infant daughters; four brothers, Troy Blankenship, Clarence Blankenship, Charlie Blankenship and Everette Blankenship; and two sisters, Alma Blankenship and Mae Sanson.

Survivors include wife, Maggie Hunt Blankenship of Bull Creek; three sons, Eugene (Penny) Blankenship Jr. of Bucyrus, Ohio, Clee (Ernestine) Blankenship of Argo, Ky. and Adam Blankenship of Bull Creek; two daughters, Brenda Asby of North Wilksberg, N.C., and Rachael Blankenship of Bull Creek; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and two brothers, Neil Blankenship of Panther and Rutherford Blankenship of Bucyrus, Ohio.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at the Mt. Zion Old Regular Baptist Church at Bull Creek with the Revs. Larry Riffe, Hassel Riffe, Michael Casey, Willie Coleman and Delbert Hurley officiating. Burial will follow in the Hunt Family Cemetery on Briar Branch, Bull Creek.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call at Mt. Zion Old Regular Baptist Church, Bull Creek, after 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Mounts Funeral Home of Gilbert is in charge of the arrangements.

Mary Patterson

Mary Alice Dye Patterson, 91, of Williamson, West Virginia, went to be with the Lord February 10, 2002 at the Appalachian Regional Hospital, South Williamson, Ky.

She was a homemaker and member of the Leckieville Freewill Baptist Church since February 18, 1952.

Born March 31, 1910 at Williamson, West Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Keene and Ella (Canada) Dye.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Clarence Patterson; sisters, Mabel Ratcliff, Jeanette Dye, Doris Dye; brothers, Carl Dye, Carlos Dye and Burgess Dye.

Survivors include one daughter, Dolores Ann and husband George H. Stanley of Williamson, W. Va.; grandson and granddaughter, Mitchell Lee and Deloros A. Stanley of Williamson, W. Va.; one sister, Elizabeth Dye of Williamson, W. Va.; two brothers, Homer Dye of Williamson, W. Va. and Clifford Dye of Ocean Springs, Miss.; along with nieces and nephews, Betty Jo (Homer) Justice, Bellevue, Ohio, Kay (Edwin) Sefton of St. Leonard, Md., Linda (Charlie) Wolfe of Quinlan, TX, Carol Dye of Austin, TX, Bruce Dye of Ocean Springs, Miss.

She was an employee of J.C. Penney in Williamson for a number of years working in alterations.

She leaves behind a legacy of love, faith and strength to the church, loved ones, friends and neighbors and she was a Sunday School teacher for many years.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002 at 1 p.m. at the Weaver Mortuary in West Williamson with Lonnie Francis officiating. Burial will follow in the McCoy Cemetery at Burnwell, Ky.

Visitation will be Tuesday, Feb. 12, 6-9 p.m. at Weaver Mortuary in West Williamson. Pallbearers will be members of the church and friends.

Polly Kirk
Polly Mae Marcum-Kirk, age 92, born and raised on Jenny's Creek, W. Va., lived in Columbus, Ohio, 37 years and was a resident of Williamsburg, Va., since 1990, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002.

Mrs. Kirk will be remembered for her good and kind heart. She nurtured her child, grandchild, nieces, nephews, brothers, sisters, a foster child and neighborhood children. She demonstrated unconditional love and generosity for her family and community. Her door was always open to those in need.

She was the daughter of Lee and Sallie Marcum and a direct descendant of Josiah Markham-Marcum, Revolutionary War soldier; Elias Williamson II, Confederate soldier; Jenny Sellards-Wiley, Indian captive and folk heroine. Mrs. Kirk continued a life-long demonstration of the indomitable spirit of her forbearers.

She was a successful bowler who traveled the eastern United States. She was active in political life and a 70-year member of the Eastern Star. She launched her daughter into small-business ownership and saw her grandson through Harvard Law School.

She is survived by her daughter Priscilla Shea; grandson Antony Petrilla; and dozens of nieces and nephews. She will be deeply missed by all.

A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at the Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home, Warfield (Ky.) Chapel. Visitation at the chapel starts at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Interment at the Williamson Cemetery with a short graveside service will be at 12 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002.

Gary Hatfield
Gary Bruce Hatfield, 45, of Newtown, W. Va., beloved son, husband and father, slipped into eternity surrounded by his loved ones on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002.

He was a coal miner and member of the Full Gospel Church at Matewan.

Born March 18, 1956 in Pike County, Ky., he was a son of Jake and Margaret (Coleman) Hatfield of Newtown.

Mr. Hatfield was preceded in death by one brother, Larry Hatfield; one daughter, Christina; paternal grandparents, Joe and Mary Hatfield; step-grandfather, Eli Sullivan; and maternal grandparents, John and Mazie Coleman.

Survivors include wife, Betty Hammond Hatfield of the home; three sons, Kevin Bruce Hatfield of Winston-Salem, N.C., Isaiah Daniel Hatfield of Mooreville, N.C., and Matthew Lee Hammond of N.C.; one daughter, Marlene Runyon of Delbarton; four sisters, Mazie (Ellis) McCoy of Belfry, Ky., Barbara (Johnny) Fry of Matewan, Nancy (Butch) Collins and Estalene (David) Lester, both of Newtown; and one grandchild, Justin Bruce Hatfield.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at the Full Gospel Church at Matewan with Fred Taylor, Chris Casey and Mary Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Hatfield Cemetery, Blackberry, Ky.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Chambers Funeral Home Inc., Matewan.

Flossie Bradshaw
Flossie Farley Bradshaw, 77, of Waldorf, Md., formerly of Newtown, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C.

She was retired from the accounting industry, most recently working at Embassy Dairy.

Mrs. Bradshaw was a member of the Calvary Gospel Church.

Born Dec. 14, 1924 in Newtown, she was a daughter of the late Carl Farley and Inez Chafin Hatfield.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, Rober C. Bradshaw; and a brother, Fred Farley.

Survivors include one sister, Annie Dotson of Waldorf, Md.; four nieces, Evellyn J. Dotson of Arlington, Va., Deborah Dotson of Waldorf, Md., Carol Farley of Laplata, Md., and Janet Sanders of California, Md.; one nephew, John Farley of Florida; six grandnephews, Fred, Christopher and John Sanders, Jimmy and Chuck Epp, and Robert Thurber; one great grandniece, Jessica Sanders; and one great grandnephew, Daniel Sanders.

Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at Calvary Gospel Church in Waldorf, Md., with the Rev. Hugh Canter officiating. Burial followed in the Trinity Memorial Gardens in Waldorf, Md.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Eberwein Funeral Home.

Arrangements directed by Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler, Ky.

Elmer Dotson
Elmer Lee Dotson, 40, of Elk Creek, Emmett, W. Va., died at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, at his home.

He was a general laborer and of the Protestant faith.

Born Feb. 25, 1961 in Logan County, he was a son of the late Garland and Julia Patrick Dotson.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Dotson was preceded in death by two brothers, Garland William Dotson and Keyster Dotson; three sisters, Linda Sue Dotson, Wanda Jean Dotson and Geraldine Dotson.

Survivors include three brothers, Eugene Fuller of Wharncliffe, Frank Delno Dotson of Gilbert, and Paul Edward Dotson of Bushnell, Fla.; and five sisters, Doris Sammons and Lorraine Grimmett, both of Gilbert, Lucille Blevins of Chicago, Ill., Diane Ellison and Wanda Cline, both of Man.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, at Mounts Funeral Home Chapel, Gilbert, with the Revs. Diamond Carter and Eddie Compton officiating. Burial will follow in the Carter Cemetery, Browning Fork of Gilbert.

Friends may call the Mounts Funeral Home Chapel in Gilbert on Wednesday evening from 6 to 9 p.m.

Mounts Funeral Home of Gilbert is in charge of the arrangements.

Sammy Spano
Sammy Spano, 59, of Chattaroy, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002 in the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio.

Born April 28, 1942, in Chattaroy, he was the son of the late Sam V. and Frances Gattuso Spano.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, a lifetime member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, the Elks Lodge and the Mountain Club. He was a barber who owned and operated the West End Barber Shop for 38 years.

He is survived by his wife, June Woolum Spano; a daughter, Susan Spano (Mike) Elswick of Vinton, Va., three sisters, Mica Lego of Hampton, Va., Margaret Spano of Charleston and Linda (Ronnie) Leonard of New Haven, Ind.; a granddaughter, Allison Elswick of Vinton, Va. and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Harry Dunn officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. View Memory Gardens in Maher.

Visitation will be from 5 - 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at Weaver Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 110 West 4th Avenue, Williamson, WV 25661.

Nephews and cousins will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Sam Kapourales, George Ritchie, Ronnie Leonard, Don Hatfield, Jack Hubbard, Jack Scott, Rudolph Slater, Nick Marodus and Sam Olive.

Estel Mahon
Estel Mahon, 77, of Newtown, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at the Appalachian Regional Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit.

Born June 25, 1924, in O'Keefe, he was the son of the late John L. and Mary Cisco Mahon.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Simpkins Mahon and several brothers and sisters.

He was a retired coal miner and a member of the North Matewan Church of Christ, the UMWA and was a Army veteran of World War II, having received the Purple Heart.

He is survived by his wife, Ferbie Catherine Mahon of Naugatuck; three strep-sons, Donald, Harold and Tommy Mullins, all of Naugatuck; daughter Sandy Steele of Tennessee; two step-daughters, Susan Willis of Mansfield, Ohio and Patricia Elkins of Naugatuck; a brother, Garnet Mahon; two grandchildren, Kelly and Alice Steele; nine step-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at Chambers Funeral Home with Rev. Josh Hall officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. View Memory Gardens at Maher. D.A.V. Rites will be performed by the Belfry Chapter #141.

Visitation will be held from 6 - 9 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
