Virginia Nester
Virginia F. Nester, of Gilbert, went to be with Lord on May 19, 2002, in Sevierville, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy B. Nester; father Craig T. Hatfield; mother Helen Belle Hatfield; brothers Robert H. Hatfield, John T. Hatfield, Ewell Hatfield and Tennis Hatfield; and sisters, Lula M. Hatfield, Marie Murphy, Muriel Murphy and Maxine Bordelon.

Survivors include a son, Dr. Michael R. (Clare) Nester, Forest Hills, Ky.; granddaughter Shawana (Michael) Brown of Belfry, Ky.; brother Henry D. Hatfield of Ocala, Fla.; one sister, Norma Varney of Huntington; and a special friend, I.J. Miller of Gilbert.

She was a retired schoolteacher, having taught at Ben Creek Grade for 37 years, as well as a member of the First Missionary Baptist Church, Gilbert.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at the Mounts Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Mason Perry, Ronald Lester and Carl Wolford officiating.

Entombment will be at Highland Memory Gardens, Godby Heights, Pecksmill, W. Va.

Active pallbearers will be Carey Cline, Roger Hatfield, John T. Hatfield, Howard Cooper, Charles Ellis Jr. and Charles Murphy.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jr. Chapman, Leo Browning, Lonny Maynor, Glenn Riggs, Edward Clay, Rush Fields, Ralph Simpson, Rev. Ronald Lester and William Wolford.

Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 6-9 p.m. at Mounts Funeral Home Chapel.

Arrangements are being handled by Mounts Funeral Home of Gilbert.

Sam Browning
Sam Browning, 76, of Williamson, passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2002 in Appalachian Regional Hospital, South Williamson, Ky.

Born Feb. 23, 1926 in Taylorville, he was a son of the late Thomas and Melinda (Justice) Browning.

He was also preceded in death by brothers, David and Lum Browning and Bill Justice; and sisters, Bessie Stafford and Clara Mae Earl.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in the Korean War.

Mr. Browning was of the Church of God faith.

Survivors include brothers, Herbert and Hobart Browning, both of Williamson.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, May 3, 2002 at Chafin Funeral Home with the Rev. Josh Hall officiating.

Burial will follow in the Justice-Tiller Cemetery, Taylorville.

Visitation will be at the funeral home from 6-9 p.m. Thursday evening.

Pallbearers will be friends and family.

Graveside rites will be conducted by the DAV Chapter 141 of Belfry, Ky.

Chafin Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Kenneth Jarrell
Kenneth Jarrell, 84, of Borderland, W. Va., beloved husband and father, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, May 11, 2002, at the Williamson Memorial Hospital.

Born May 14, 1917, at Inez, Ky., he was the son of the late George and Lena Copley Jarrell.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, George Jarrell, Jr., and three sisters, Ruby Farris, Gertrude Endicott and Helen Crum.

Mr. Jarrell was a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA, having worked in area mines for more than 33 years. He lived for many years at Nolan, W. Va., moving to Columbus, Ohio in 1975 and remaining until May of 2001, when he returned to the area to live at Borderland, W. Va. He was a faithful member of the South Columbus Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include his devoted wife of 61 years, Dollie Hensley Jarrell; son, Robert K. Jarrell and wife, Adela, of Columbus, Ohio; daughters, Patricia Brewer and husband, William G., of Ona, W. Va., Thelma Tackett and husband, Joe, of Borderland, W. Va., Lena Fletcher and husband, Tommy, of Borderland, W. Va., and Bonnie Runyon and husband, Rev. Haskel, Jr., of Borderland, W.Va; 12 grandchildren, Pamelay (Gary) Smith and Robert (Kathy) Jarrell of Columbus, Ohio, Chris Brewer of Dayton, Ohio, Brian Brewer of Chesapeake, Va., Joe Tackett of Chattaroy, W. Va., Kenny (Kim) Hensley, James Hensley and Matthew Hensley of Borderland, W. Va., and Matthew Hensley of Borderland, W. Va., and Susie (John) Baisden of Dover, Tenn.; seven great-grandchildren, Haille Smith and Austin Smith of Columbus, Ohio, Morgan Tackett of Bean Station, Tenn., Breanna Baisden of Dover, Tenn., Steven and Johnathan Skinner of Columbus, Ohio, and a new great-granddaughter due to be born in July; two brothers, Clyde Jarrell of Columbus, Ohio and James Ray Jarrell of Fort Gay, W. Va., and three sisters, Glenedith Jarrell of Warfield, Ky., Leona Ratcliff of Crum, W. Va., and Mae Smith of Virginia Beach, Virginia

He is also survived by an extended family, the sons and daughters of the late Cobb and Maxie Hensley of Hatfield, Ky., with whom he spent many of his early years; a special niece, Debbie Sammons, dedicated caregiver, Brenda Neal; and many special friends and family members.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at Bethel Temple Church at Nolan, W. Va. with the Revs. Richard Hensley and Haskell Runyon, Jr. officiating.

Burial will follow at Mountain View Memory Gardens at Maher, W. Va. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held Monday, May 13, 2002, at Weaver Morturary from 6:00 to 9:00. Visitation will then be held Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at Bethel Temple Church, Nolan, W. Va. any time after 5:00 p.m. with special services beginning at 7:00 p.m. with speakers Revs. Ray Taylor and Earl White.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Weaver Mortuary, Williamson, W. Va.

Clarence Bown
CLareance Brown 83, of Lavalette, W. Va., beloved husband of Georgie Scott Brown, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, May 11, 2002, at his residence.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Reger Funeral Chapel by his nephew, Minister John Brown. He will be laid to rest at White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville, W. Va.

He was born November 26, 1918 at Crum, W. Va., a son of the late Elder John Brown and Sarah Varney Brown.

He was a graduate of Belfry High School in Pike County, Kentucky. He entered the U.S. Army Air Corps where he was a tail gunner on the B-17 "Flying Fortress" and while attempting to complete a mission in action he and his crew met with tragedy. He was listed as missing in action. Later becoming captured as a German POW. Following an honorable discharge after WWII, he worked for the N & W Raiload as a brakeman and attended barber college in Richmond, Va. He was self-employed, owning barber shops in Williamson and Huntington. The last barber shop he worked before retiring was King's Row Barber Shop of Eastern Heights, Huntington.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 93 of Kenova, VFW Post 1064 of Huntington, the Huntington Kiwanis Club and was a former Boy Scout Master.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his only son, David Clarence Brown, a son-in-law, James C. Maynard, a prematurely born great-granddaughter, Whitlee Brooke Terrill, a step great-grandson, Jeremy Maynard, an identical twin brother, Lawrence Brown, and brothers, Elmer, Alfred, Claude, Clinton and Clifford Brown.

In addition to his loving wife of 55 years, survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Patty Maynard of Huntington, Ginny Blankenship and her husband Richard of Wayne, W. Va.; two granddaughters, Pamela Williams of Huntington and Deborah Terrill and her husband Ramey of Milton; two grandsons, Adam Blankenship and Austin Blankenship, both of Wayne; four great-grandchildren, Chris and Courtney Nelson, Brandon Elliott, all of Huntington, and Alexis Terrill of Milton; three step grandchildren, Jeff Maynard of Lavalette, Sharon Maynard of South Point, Ohio, and Darrell Maynard of Wayne; two step great-grandchildren and J. C. Maynard, both of Lavalette; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Clyde Brown and his wife, Fern, of Ceredo, W. Va., Alvis Brown, and his wife, Leona, of Bardstown, Ky., and a sister, Muriel Salyers of Ceredo, W. Va.

Friends may call from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday at the Reger Funeral Home in Huntington.

He was an inspiration to his family and friends and those whose paths he crossed in God's planb for life.

Bessie Williamson
Bessie Williamson of Grey Eagle died Sunday, May 12, 2002, at her home.

Visitation will be conducted after 6 p.m. Monday at the Warfield Chapel of Richmond-Callaham Funeral, Warfield, Ky.

Funeral services are planned for 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Warfield Chapel.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

Marlian Jones
Marlian Kent Jones, 55, of 221 Linden Circle, Pulaski, Va., died Monday, May 20, 2002 at his residence.

He was born Jan. 25, 1947 in Charlestown, and was the son of the late Henry Bert Jones. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy where he served aboard the Carrier USS Ranger. After his military service, he returned to Southwest Virginia and attended New River Community College.

He received a master's degree at Radford University. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Pulaski. He was a draftsman at TP Parker and Sons, Roanoke.

Surviving include his mother, Goldia Lewis Jones, Pulaski.

Funeral service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. from Stevens Funeral Chapel with Dr. Hugh Springer officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. Visiting will be Thursday evening at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m.

Arrangements are by Stevens Funeral Home, Pulaski.

Martha Blankenship
Martha Blankenship, 83, of Honolulu, Hawaii, formerly of Gilbert, died Monday, May 20, 2002 in Honolulu.

Born June 26, 1918 in Pikeville, Ky., she was a daughter of the late Lofey and Zonnie Walker Trent.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Nanthial Trent, Bollie Trent, Mathias Trent and Fleming Trent; and two sisters, Liddie Davis and Mandy Morgan.

Mrs. Blankenship was a homemaker and member of the Church of God faith.

Survivors include two daughters, Helen Trent and June Wood, both of Honolulu; a son, Adam Blankenship of Anaheim, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; and two sisters, Stella Trent of Florida and Vellvie Griffen of Oceana.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 25, at Tamcliffe Tabernacle Church, Tamcliffe, with the Revs. Barry Brooks and David Browning officiating.

Burial will follow in the Hatfield Cemetery, Sharon Heights, Hampden.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call at Tamcliffe Tabernacle Church at Tamcliffe (Gilbert) after 6 p.m. Friday.

Russell Elkins
Russell Elkins, age 68, of LaFollette, formerly of Williamson, passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2002 at his home. Preceded in death by daughter, Authula Mae Elkins; mother Authula Maynard; step-father Charles Maynard; and sister Garnett Hall.

Russell is survived by wife, Alena Ann Elkins; stepsons Chuck Sensabaugh and wife Peggy of Ellenwood, Ga., and J.A. Sensabaugh of Dayton, Ohio; ex-wife, Martha Morgan of West Lafayette, Ohio; sons, Russ K. Elkins of West Lafayette, Ohio, Richard Elkins of Newark, Ohio, and Todd Elkins; a daughter, Vickie Dragovich of Warsaw, Ohio; grandchildren, Jennifer and husband Curt Wintrode of St. Louis, Mo., Hotrod (Tony) Davis of Ellenwood, GaDanielle and Derrick Dragovich of Warsaw, Ohio, Jesse and Joshua Elkins of West LaFayette, Ohio, Wyatt Elkins of Newark, Ohio; great granddaughter, Gloria Hope Wintrode of St. Louis, Mo.; brothers, William Elkins of Grove City, Ohio, and Irvin Hensley of Williamson; sisters, Marie Scurlock of Grove City, Ohio, and Juanita Mitchell of Yorkville, Ohio.

The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday, May 23, at Cross Funeral Home.

Friday the body of Russell Elkins will be taken to Weavers Mortuary in Williamson. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, May 24, at Weavers.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Weavers Mortuary with the Rev. Robert Elkins officiating. Interment will be in Mt. View Memory Gardens, Maher.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made in Russell's name to M D L Scholarship Fund, c/o Concord College Foundation, P.O. Box 1000, Athens, W. Va., 24712.

Cleve Porter
Cleve McClellan Porter, 63, of North Spring, has gone home to be with Jesus on Thursday, May 2, 2002 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center, Bluefield.

Born June 4, 1938 in North Spring, he was a son of the late Charlie and Tessie Thornsbury Porter.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Cleve McClellan Porter Jr.

Mr. Porter was a retired coal miner and member of the Spratsville Freewill Baptist Church at Spratsville, Gilbert.

Survivors include his wife, Alma Trent Porter of North Spring; one son, Frank (Carmella) Porter of Verner; three daughters, Julia (Rex) Hatfield of Coal Mountain, Kathy (Jeffery) Walls of Verner, and Pamela (Leon) Cline of Brenton; six brothers, Steve (Robin) Porter of Brenton, Charles Jr. (Mary) Porter of Woodbridge, Va., Douglas (Janet) Porter, Edgar (Donna) Porter, Joey Porter and Timmy Dean Porter, all of Vermillion, Ohio; three sisters, Juanita Trent of Vermillion, Ellamae (Hassel) Lester of Hanover and Barbara Shupe of Florida; eight grandchildren, Heather Rose, Cindy Hatfield, Katie Brown, Tabitha Walls, Courtney Porter, Trevor Porter, Alexandra Cline and Austin Cline; and one great-grandchild, Blake Brown.

Active pallbearers will be David Porter, Ben Huff, David Toler, Mark Lester, Hassel Lester Jr., Tommy Shupe, Nathan Porter, Tyson Porter, Luke Porter and Daniel Porter.

Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. Sunday, May 5, at the Spratsville Freewill Baptist Church with the Revs. James Ellis and Walter Grimmett officiating.

Burial will follow in the Cline Cemetery, North Spring.

Friends may call at Spratsville Freewill Baptist Church from 6-11 p.m. Saturday.

Lee Hatfield
Lee Hatfield, 76 years old, of the Spice Creek section of Verner, West Virginia, went to be with the Lord at 6:50 p.m. on Friday, May 10, 2002, at Logan General Hospital, Logan, W. Va.

Lee was born August 6, 1925 in the Canebreak section of Gilbert, West Virginia. He was the son of the late George and Evie Carter Hatfield.

Lee was of the Baptist Faith, a member of The New Sounds of Praise Gospel Group, and a disabled truck driver for the West Virginia Department of Highways.

In addition to his parents, Lee was preceded in death by his wife, Lula Ellis Hatfield; one daughter, Phyllis Ruth; seven brothers, Willis, Doc, Lewis, Ballard, Wayne, Joe and Tennis Hatfield; four sisters, Mona Belcher, Vicie Hatfield, Ella Christian and Delia Brooks; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Survivors include one daughter, Dianna (Johnny) Dean of Verner, West Virginia; two sons, Leonard (Mandy) Browning of Verner, West Virginia, and Charles (Judy) Ellis of North Carolina; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Also surviving, one sister, Mrs. Willard (Fannie) Ball of Prichard, West Virginia, and a host of family and friends.

Funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, May 14th, at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Mounts Funeral Home, Gilbert, West Virginia, conducted by the Rev. Robert Walker, Rev. Diamond Carter and Rev. Johnny Shelton.

Visitation will be Monday, May 13th, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Mounts Funeral Home Chapel with special services conducted at 7:30 p.m. by Rev. Sammy Lester, Rev. Garfield Hatfield, Rev. Michael Browning and Rev. Diamond Carter.

Active pallbearers: John Hatfield, Danny Hatfield, Farron Hatfield, Homer Blankenship, Johnny Ball and Lonnie Ball.

Honorary pallbearers: Larry Charles Ellis Jr., Steven Browning, John Stiltner, Jeff Cline, David Lively, Okey Hatfield, James Brooks, Willard Ball, Omer Reisinger, Louie Grimmett and Michael Gillispie.

Burial will be at the Memory Gardens Cemetery at Madison, West Virginia.
