Robert Hubbard
Mr. Robert H. Hubbard, of Huntington, formerly of Williamson, passed away Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002 in St. Mary's Hospital, Huntington.

The son of the late E.T. and Stella V. Hubbard, he was born at Matewan on July 22, 1932. He was a graduate of Williamson High School, National Business College of Roanoke, Va., and the General Motors Institute of Pontiac, Mich. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Hubbard was a retired automobile dealer in Williamson, where he owned and operated Hubbard Motor Co., which was founded by his late father. He became involved in this business at the early age of 10, and was one of the youngest dealers to be appointed as a dealer with General Motors.

He was founder and president of Hubbard Realty Co.; president of Jim-Bob Productions, which did the music for the Hatfield-McCoy movie done in the 1980s and was also involved in various other businesses in the surrounding area.

He was president of the Williamson Automobile Dealers Association from 1957 until 1982, serving on different dealer councils of various divisions of Nissan, Pontiac, Buick, Studebaker/Jeep and other franchises held during that time. He was named chairman of the Tug Valley Flood Control from 1957 until leaving the Williamson area in 1982. He was an active member of the local Chamber of Commerce, as well as holding a board office.

He received much recognition and awards from local, county, state and federal offices for the endless time and work he did for flood control on behalf of the Tug Valley area. He also received special awards from the Mingo County Commission, National Weather Service and the State of West Virginia for his constant watch guard throughout the devastating flood of 1977, in which there was no loss of lives.

Mr. Hubbard coached the Belfry (Ky.) High School golf team in 1975 and 1976, and was voted Citizen of the Month on three different occasions.

During his last few years, he has been working for his Lord and Savior, and with a special love for Lewis Memorial Baptist Church, his church family and a deep respect for Dr. David Lemming and church staff.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Katherine McCoy; and a brother, Corky Hubbard. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Judy E. Hubbard; three sons and daughters-in-law, E.T. and Kimberly Hubbard of Gilbert, Ariz., Joseph J. and Karen Hubbard of Ceredo, Robert H. and Sarah Hubbard II of Milton; and three beautiful granddaughters, Shawna, Melissa and Samantha; and a great grandson, Robert Ashton.

In lieu of flowers, you may donate to the Lewis Memorial Baptist Church Bus Ministry, 5325 W. Pea Ridge Road, Huntington, W. Va., 25705. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002 at Lewis Memorial Baptist Church with Dr. David Lemming officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy, Ky.

Friends may call at Chapman's Mortuary from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002, and after 10 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Woodrow New
Woodrow New, 81, of North Matewan, formerly of Majestic, Ky., died Friday, Aug. 16, 2002 at Appalachian Regional Hospital, South Williamson, Ky.

Born Nov. 14, 1920, he was a son of the late Willie New and Polly Prater New.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Ivory Maynard New; a son, Glenn New; brothers John and William New; and a sister, Lena Hardin.

A retired coal miner, Mr. New was a member of the Church of Christ faith. He was a disabled veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Eloise New; a son, Woodrow (Billie Jean) New of Majestic, Ky.; daughters, Earnestine (Wayne) Gentry of Cooksville, Tenn., Shirley (Dan) Clark, Claris (Don) Wilson and Betty (Dan) Buschur, all of Cincinnati, Ohio; stepchildren, Bradley (Debbie) Casey of Kimper, Ky., Willie (Margaret) Casey of Elkhorn City, Ky., Phyllis J. (Oliver) Harris of N. Matewan, Patricia Ann (Jessie) Dotson of Phelps, Ky., Danny Ray Casey of McCarr, Ky., and Randal (Penny) Casey of Freeburn, Ky.; 16 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19, at Chambers Funeral Home Chapel.

Burial will follow in the New Family Cemetery at Chapman Fork, Majestic, Ky.

DAV Chapter 141 will conduct military services at the gravesite.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Chambers Funeral Home Inc.

Hurston Dingess
Hurston Dingess, 75, of Lynn, W. Va., passed away Monday, Sept. 30, 2002 at his residence.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler, Ky.

Paul Pigman
Paul L. Pigman, 70, of Rawl, died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at Charleston Area Medical Center, Charleston.

He was born Feb. 5, 1932, a son of the late Paul G. and Martha Brown Pigman.

In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death by two brothers, Larry and William Pigman and one son, Michael Eugene Pigman.

A member of the Rawl Freewill Baptist Church, Paul retired from Norfolk and Southern Railroad and served in the U.S. Navy.

He is survived by his wife, Juanita Chapman Pigman; two sons, William C. "Skip" Pigman and Paul L. (Lenita) Pigman, Jr., both of Rawl; three brothers, Fred (Louise) Pigman and Terry (Tammy) Pigman, both of Ragland, and MacArthur (Edna) Pigman of Villa Grove, Ill.; one sister, Mary Ellen (Dom) Flores of Bensenville, Ill; one sister-in-law, Zella Pigman of Rawl; and three grandchildren, Stephen Pigman, Ryan Pigman and Paul Pigman III, all of Rawl.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, at the Rogers Funeral Home Chapel, Belfry, Ky.

Burial will follow in the Pigman Family Cemetery at Rawl.

Pallbearers will be Stephen Pigman, Paul Pigman III, Ryan Pigman, Mark Bono, David Anderson and Gene Chapman.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Sunday and anytime Monday at the funeral home.

Arrangements are under the direction of Rogers Funeral Home.

Bill Cline
Bill Bartley Cline, 75, of Baisden, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002 at his residence.
Born Jan. 8, 1927 in Baisden, he was a son of the late Johnson and Allie Cline Cline.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Magaline Cline Cline; two sons, Bill Tex and Gordon Cline; one grandson, Jarred Cline; two brothers, Roosevelt and Hoover Cline; and two sisters, Geneva Lester and Darkness Burney.
Bill was a retired coal miner and of the Protestant faith.
Survivors include one daughter, Josephine (husband Bobby) Rollyson of Gilbert; three sons, Nixon Cline, Larry (wife Orangie) Cline and Rex Allen (wife Selena) Cline, all of Baisden; 11 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and four sisters, Lona Blankenship of Hampden, Corena Riffe of Ikes Fork, Lula Bell Bailey and Chloe Burgess, both of Baisden.
Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002 at Mounts Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Jonas Trent and Jim Nagy officiating.
Burial will follow in Cline Cemetery, Baisden.
Active pallbearers will be Jamie Lester, Johnson Bailey, Carson Cline, Cody Cline, Rex Cline and Richard Smith.
Friends may call at Mounts Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m.
Mounts Funeral Home of Gilbert is in charge of arrangements.

Hurston Dingess
Hurston Dingess, 75, of Lynn, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002 at his residence.
Born Dec. 27, 1926 at War Eagle, he was a son of the late Bruce Dingess and Lina Cline Cox.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle Dingess; son Johnny Dingess; brother Burns Dingess; and sister Gloria Ford.
Mr. Dingess was a retired miner from Sovereign Coal Company and member of the UMWA. He was also a member of Bluesprings Freewill Baptist Church.
Survivors include sons Michael (Louise) Dingess of Matewan, Donnie (Wendy) Dingess of Taylorville, N.C., and Steven (Tina) Dingess of Beech Creek; daughters Phyllis Dingess of Lynn, Linda Cowdrey of Bokeelia, Fla., Josie Dingess of Freeburn, Ky., Elizabeth Smith of North Matewan, Cynthia (Archie) Blankenship of Beech Creek and Angela Scales of Red Jacket; brothers Hayes Dingess of Columbus, Ohio, Harold Cox of Lynn and Kenneth Cox of North Matewan; sisters Wanda Dean of Piqua, Ohio, Diane Collins of Maynardville, Tenn., and Dimple Mahon of Red Jacket; close friends and family, the Daughertys; also a host of friends and family; 14 grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.
Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, 2002 at Bluesprings Freewill Baptist Church with minister Curtis Wellman officiating.
Burial will follow in Varney Cemetery, Lynn.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Wednesday at the church with services at 7 p.m. with Darius Casey officiating and services at 7 p.m. Thursday with Mike Casey officiating.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler, Ky.

Orville Blankenship
Orville Blankenship, 83, of Campcreek, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002 at his residence.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Phelps Funeral Services.

Virginia Brumfield
Virginia M. Brumfield, 79, of Crum, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002.
Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 4, 2002 at Webb Freewill Baptist Church, Crum.
Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002.

James Smith
James Edward Smith, 79, passed away at his home on Monday, Sept. 30, 2002 after a long battle with cancer. He was born September 15, 1923 in Canada, Ky., to Willie and Alta Smith, who preceded him in death. He was the father to Raymond Edward Smith and the brother to Everette Smith, Myrtle Reed, Bessie West and Lois Rogue who also preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years Sarah Smith; daughter Shirley Pinson of Chickamauga, Ga.; and son James Carl Smith of Charlotte, N.C.; three grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. He is also survived by four brothers, William Smith of Belfry, Ky., Bobby Smith, Tunis Smith and Kenneth Smith of Canada, Ky.; five sisters, Sylvia Williamson of Belfry, Ky., Pricy Runyons of Jeffersonville, Ind., Josephine Williamson of Versailles, Ky., Ruth Mounts of Hardy, Ky., and Mable Stevens of Amanda, Ohio.
Sergeant James E. Smith served in World War II for three years, February 15, 1943 to October 17, 1945 in the Army Air Force Base Unit and in the Korean Conflict for four years from November 30, 1948 to May 28, 1952 in the 29th Infantry Regiment.
A funeral service to celebrate the life of James Edward Smith will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002 at McEwen Mint Hill Chapel with the Reverend Harold Hudson officiating. Interment will follow in Charlotte Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Arrangements by McEwen Funeral and Cremation Service, Mint Hill Chapel.

Julius Davis
Julius Davis, 79, of Hell Creek, W. Va., died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002 at the Veteran's Medical Center.

Born May 7, 1923 at Caney, W. Va., he was a son of the late Floyd and Lear (Starr) Davis.

He was also preceded in death by eight brothers, Randall, Jess, Frank, John, Cecil, Joe, Freeman and Freeland Davis, and one sister, Rebecca Stacy.

Survivors include one sister, Briza Starr, and a host of nephews and nieces.

He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in World War II.

Funeral services will be held at Chafin Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, 2002 with the Rev. Lewis Hall Jr. officiating.

Burial will follow at White Cemetery, Hell Creek, W. Va.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Visitation will be at the Chafin Funeral Home from 6-9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Chafin Funeral Home.

Barney Elliott
Barney Elliott, 74, of Matewan, W. Va., passed away October 1, 2002 at Williamson Memorial Hospital.

He was born November 12, 1927.

He was the son of the late Ira Elliott Sr. and Rose Elliott.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers Ira (Doc) Elliott (Jean), Elmer Elliott, Minnes Elliott, Elbert Elliott, Minyard Elliott and Arlie Elliot; and one sister, Thelma Elliott.

He was a graduate of Wayne High School and after graduating came to Matewan to work for Red Jacket Coal Company. He spent four years in the U.S. Air Force serving in the Korean Conflict. After the service he was employed by Kentucky Central Life Insurance. He along with business partner Dan R. Moore established Superior Electric Heating of Matewan where he served as president until his retirement in 1995. He was affiliated with The First Assembly of God of Matewan.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Iretha (George) Elliott; one son, Danny G. (Pamela) Elliott; and the two joys of his life, grandsons Brandon Tyler Elliott and Sean Parker Elliott. Other survivors are brothers Merideth Elliott (Jean) of Wayne, W. Va., and Bernie Elliott of Huntington, W. Va.; and many nephews, nieces and friends.

The family wishes to especially acknowledge care-givers Shelby Gibson, Jean Maynard, Janet Thornsbury and Patty Gibson.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Oct. 4, 2002 at the First Assembly of God in Matewan with Pastor Lowell Sparks and Dr. Allen Shouse directing the service. Visitation will be at the church from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Thursday, October 3, 2002. Chambers Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements. Burial will follow at Mountain View Memory Gardens of Huddy, Ky. DAV rites will be performed by Belfry Chapter 141.

Pallbearers: Paul D. Slater, Chad Slater, Rick Preston, Kenny Gillespie, James D. Slater and Kenneth Reed.

Honorary pallbearers: Dan R. Moore, John Norman, Chester May, Charles Dardi, Ervin Smith, Rusty Newsome, Sonny Hatfield and Gerald Epling.

Bryon Perry
Mr. Bryon K. Perry, age 42, of Gilbert, W. Va., died Monday, September 30, 2002 in the Logan General Hospital, Logan, W. Va., following a short illness.

He was born October 11, 1959 at Welch, W. Va., the son of Billy J. West Perry of Gilbert, W. Va., and the late Rev. Hoover Perry. He was a disabled miner and was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his mother, Billy J. West Perry of Gilbert; a daughter, Falon Perry of Raleigh, N.C.; a son, Bryon K. Perry Jr. of Raleigh, N.C.; a sister, Rhonda Maynor of Gilbert; and a brother, Clark Perry of Man, W. Va.

The family will have a private memorial service later.

Mr. Perry's request was to be cremated.

Fanning Funeral Home of Iaeger, W. Va., was in charge of the arrangements.

Fred Deskins III
Fred Deskins III, 30, of Santa Cruz, Calif., formerly of Athens and Reynoldsburg, Ohio, died unexpectedly Oct. 10, 2002, while on a work assignment in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Fred was born March 2, 2002, the son of Fred, Jr. and Georgia Deskins, and the fraternal twin to Febriena Angelic Deskins, all who survive.

Additional survivors include two sisters, Frederica Stupka and Sherry Coons; two brothers-in-law, Larry Stupka, Jr., and Fred Coons; nieces and nephews, Abigail, Glenn and Lydia Coons and Ethan, Claire and Avery Stupka; numerous friends and extended family.

Fred was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed kayaking, travel and bluegrass music.

There was never a kinder heart or a gentler spirit than fun loving Uncle Bubba. He will be very sadly missed by all.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at the Cotner Funeral Home, 7369 East Main Street, Reynoldsburg, Ohio.
