Betty Brinager
Betty Brinager, 89, of Parsley Bottom, Lenore, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002 at Appalachian Regional Hospital, South Williamson, Ky.

She lived with her daughter Teresa and granddaughter Betty Michelle Hall.

Born Feb. 8, 1913 at Naugatuck, she was a daughter of the late Pete and Fannie (Evans) Maynard.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Brinager; daughter Ludie York; brothers Cecil, Sam, Jessie and John Maynard; sisters Alice Runyons and Edna Evans; five grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

She was a homemaker and member of the Baisdentown Church of God.

Survivors include sons H.P. Maynard of Dayton, Ohio, George Edward (Ruth) Brinager of Blackberry, Ky., James (Nina) Brinager of Teachey, N.C., Gene (Sue) Brinager of Belo, Cecil (Ruby) Brinager of Racine, Ohio, Lonnie (Carol) Brinager of Belo, W. Va., Dave (Sherry) Brinager and Dale (Janice) Brinager, both of Lenore; daughters Pauline Evans of Naugatuck, Betty Lee (Hubert) Newsome of Lenore, Phyllis (Kenneth) Robinson of Columbus, Ohio, Tenna Brinager of Lenore and Teresa Brinager of Lenore; brothers Hoover Maynard of Lenore, Buck Maynard of Naugatuck and Oscar Maynard of Racine, Ohio; sisters Ethel Hamm of Boisservain, Va., and Lodie Marcum of Naugatuck; 41 grandchildren; 69 great grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002 at Hatfield Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Terry Blankenship officiating.

Burial will follow in the Second Newsome Cemetery at Lenore.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation began after 6 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler, Ky.

Jeanette Simpkins
Jeanette Simpkins, 82, of Smith Towers, Matewan, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002 at the ARH Skilled Nursing Facility.

Born March 16, 1920 at Sprigg, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Alice (Murphy) Allen.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Simpkins; four brothers; and two sisters.

Survivors include two daughters, Wynonia White of Matewan and Alice Harmon of Newtown; and two grandchildren, Steven Harmon of Logan County and Derrick White of Michigan. She also leaves behind a host of friends and neighbors.

Her wishes were to be cremated and her ashes scattered in Michigan with her grandson.

Memorial services will be at 12 p.m. Wednesday at the Matewan Church of God with Pastor David Smith officiating.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Chambers Funeral Home Inc.

Jimmy Combs
Jimmy Dean Combs, 35, of Highway 399, passed away Friday, October 4, 2002 at his residence, due to cancer.

He was born April 21, 1967 in South Williamson, Ky., to William Dover and Mae Janette (Blackburn) Robinson of Beattyville, Ky. He was a former employee of Kentucky Petroleum Supply Company in Beattyville, Ky., and a member of the Pine Crest Church of God. He also was a member of the Masonic Lodge 213 of Proctor and a Shriner.

Along with his parents, he is survived by his wife of 10 years, Lana (Caldwell) Combs; one daughter, Emily Nicole Combs; one sister, Tina Kearns of Beattyville, Ky.; and two brothers, Adren Blackburn of Pike County, Ky., and William Billy Robinson of Beattyville, Ky.

Also surviving is his maternal grandmother, Claudia Blackburn, and his paternal grandmother, Gredis Robinson, both of Pike County, Ky.; and a host of friends and relatives.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, October 8, 2002, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Ira Fletcher officiating. Visitation will be Monday at the funeral home from 6-9 p.m. with Shriner's services beginning at 7 p.m. Burial in the Beattyplace Cemetery, Yellow Rock, Ky., with the Booneville Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers are David Treadway, David Williams, Ferrell Wise, Paul Watkins, George Stamper, Danny Charles, Warren Murrell and Doug Berry.

Marie Williams
Marie A. Williams, 91, of 624 Johnstown Rd., Beckley, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002 at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness.

Born on July 17, 1911 at Lexington, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Samuel A. and Mattie Glover Armstrong. Mrs. Williams was a homemaker and member of the St. John's Episcopal Church in Knoxville, Tenn. She had made her home in Beckley for the past two years, having lived most of her life in Knoxville, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cyril Howard Williams Sr.

Surviving are her children: Cyril H. "Cy" Williams Jr. and his wife Connie of Beckley, Philip Williams and his wife Mary of Forest, Virginia, Nora Heiber and her husband Thomas of Indian Harbor Beach, Florida. Eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive.

A memorial service will be conducted at the Christ Episcopal Church, Main St., Clarksburg, W. Va., on Thursday, Oct. 10, at 11 a.m. with Father Phillip Bottlemey officiating. Entombment will be held at the Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum in Clarksburg, W. Va.

In lieu of flowers, donations should be directed to the American Heart Association in memory of Mrs. Williams.

Angela Blankenship
Angela Kay Blankenship, 32, of Hanover, died at 12:24 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002 at her residence.

Born July 21, 1970 in Welch, she was the daughter of Beatrice Rice Blankenship of Hanover and the late Faxon H. Blankenship.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by one brother, Michael Steven Blankenship.

Angela was a homemaker and member of the Protestant faith. She was a graduate of Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College with a degree in criminal justice.

Survivors include a loving companion, Timmy Lester of Hanover; mother Beatrice Rice Blankenship of Hanover; one daughter, Tiffany Rose Blankenship of the home; one brother, John Blankenship of Beckley; one sister, Deborah Sherwood of Pittsburgh, Pa.; two nieces, Susan Sherwood of Huntington and Samantha Sherwood of Pittsburgh, Pa.

Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002 at Mounts Funeral Home Chapel, Gilbert, with the Rev. Mason Perry and Sister Mary Lou Hatfield officiating.

Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Friends of the family will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call at Mounts Funeral Home Chapel in Gilbert on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m.

Mounts Funeral Home of Gilbert is in charge of the arrangements.

Marilyn Prater
Marilyn Darlene Prater, 62, of Matewan, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002 at Appalachian Regional Hospital, South Williamson, Ky.

Born May 26, 1940 in Waukegan, Ill., she was a daughter of the late Floyd and Nellie Pilker Studebaker. She was also preceded in death by one son, David Studebaker.

She was a homemaker and of the Jehovah's Witnesses faith.

She is survived by her husband, Ernest Prater of Matewan; sons Tommy Gerambio and Robert Gerambio, both of Illinois; daughter Betty Ann Gerambio of Harvard, Ill.; brother James Studebaker of Phoenix, Ariz.; and a host of grandchildren.

Memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2002 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Phelps, Ky.

Arrangements are under the direction of R.S. Jones and Son Funeral Home, Phelps, Ky.

Thurman Perry
Thurman Perry, 65, of Jenny's Creek, died Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002.

Funeral service will be conducted at 12 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002 at the Old Jenny's Creek United Baptist Church.

Visitation will be held anytime at the church.

Margaret Vernatter

Mrs. Margaret Annilee Vernatter, 81, of Williamson, died Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002 at Mingo Manor Nursing Home.

Born Nov. 29, 1920 at Toms Creek, Va., she was a daughter of the late Carmel and Dora (Hubbard) Wilson.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Burl Vernatter, and brothers Aubrey and Roscoe Wilson.

She, along with her late husband, operated Burl's Taxi Service for many years.

Margaret was a member of the First Baptist Church of Williamson.

Survivors include a son, Marvin (Ruth) Vernatter of Williamson; stepson John (Barbara) Vernatter of San Francisco, Calif.; stepdaughters Paula and Francesca Vernatter; sister Nina Poe of Glendale, Calif; nieces and nephews, Rita Poe, Joanne Pahl, David A. Wilson, Terry Poe and David Wilson.

Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002 at Weaver Mortuary with the Rev. John Mazarella officiating.

Burial will follow in Vernatter Cemetery, Delbarton.

Pallbearers will be men of the First Baptist Church, friends and nephews.

Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2002 at Weaver Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church, Building Fund, P.O. Box 1438, Williamson, W. Va., 25661.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Weaver Mortuary of West Williamson.

Clarence Bentley
Mr. Clarence Bentley, 79, of Frederica, formerly of Toledo, Ohio, died Monday, Sept. 9, 2002 at Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford, Del.

He was born March 15, 1923 in Freeburn, Ky., son of the late Russell and Ida Hall Bentley.

Visitation and funeral services were held at Reeb Funeral Home, 5712 N. Main St., Sylvania, Ohio, with the Rev. Gary Trzcinski officiating. Interment followed at Toledo Memorial Park, Sylvania, Ohio.

Donald Blackwell
Donald E. Blackwell, 62, of Red Jacket, passed away Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002 at Williamson Memorial Hospital.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Chambers Funeral Home Inc.

Robert Hoskins
Robert Emmett Hoskins, of Cape May Beach, N.J., died Thursday, October 17, 2002 in Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital, Cape May Court House, N.J. Mr. Hoskins was born on April 5, 1938 in Red Jacket, W. Va.

He was the former manager of the Finnaren and Haley Paints' Store, formerly in Stone Harbor, N.J., and later in Cape May Court House, N.J. He later worked at Swain's Hardware in Cape May, N.J.; and most recently worked as a courier for the Cape May County MUA. Mr. Hoskins served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1958 to 1962. He was an avid softball player. He also was a coach and referee for the Lower Township Recreation Department. He attended Williamson High School where he was a W. Va. All-State Basketball and Baseball player and was chosen to be inducted next week in the Williamson High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

Mr. Hoskins is survived by: his wife, Sandra L. (Burke); three daughters, Melissa of Lower Township, N.J., Michelle (and Fred) of Cape May Court House, N.J., Heather (and Steven) of Toms River, N.J.; his mother and stepfather, Erma Lou and William E. Frazier Sr. of Williamson; one sister, Krista Lynn (and Brad) Cather of Williamson, W. Va.; two brothers, David (and Edna) Hoskins of Kemp, Texas, William E. (and Becky) Frazier Jr. of Williamson; grandchildren Jessica, Rebecca, Brittney, Chelsea, Alexsis, Gabriel, Shane, Hannah and Brianna.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. in the First Assembly of God Church, 1068 Seashore Road, Cold Spring, N.J. There will be a viewing from 12 noon to 1 p.m. Monday in the church. Burial will be in the Cape May County Cemetery, Cape May Court House, N.J.

Donations are suggested in his memory to: Lower Township Recreation Department, 2600 Bayshore Road, Villas, N.J., 08251; or the First Assembly of God Church, 1068 Seashore Road, Cape May, N.J., 08204.

Ray Bragg
Ray E. Bragg, 86, of Varney, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002 at Boone Memorial Hospital.

Born May 28, 1916 in Musick, he was a son of the late Pansy Bragg Newmer.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his wife, Pricie Bragg, and two great grandchildren, Dustin Sweet and Natasha Sweet.

Ray was a retired tipple operator (coal miner), formerly employed by WP Coal Company. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include two sons, Dana (Barbara) Bragg of Taylorville, N.C., and Marion (Mary) Bragg of Varney; three daughters, Sandra (Charles) Murphy of Varney, Linda (Stewart) Justice and Brenda (Russell) Shell of McConnell; one sister, Blondene Maynard of Commerce, Mich.; 10 grandchildren, Leah Mathis, Dana Bragg Jr., Kathy Sweet, Betty Reynolds, Stephen Bragg, Chris Bragg, Derek Murphy, Shawn Murphy, Bryan Shell, Kim Browning; 15 great-grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.

Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, 2002 at Collins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Godby officiating.

Burial will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens, Godby.

Pallbearers will be Bryan Shell, Tim Mathis, Dana, Chris and Stephen Bragg, James Sweet, Bruce Browning and Bobby Reynolds.

Honorary pallbearers will be Russell Shell, Charles Murphy and Stewart Justice Jr.

Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home chapel.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Collins Funeral Home, Switzer.
