Pearl Hensley
Pearl Hensley, 88, of Laurel Creek, W. Va., passed away April 3, 2003 at the Logan General Hospital.

Born Sept. 6, 1914 at Dorton, Ky., she was a daughter of the late Floyd and Dolly Elsick Belcher. She made her home with her son. She was also preceded in death by brothers Charlie, Kessie and Ed Belcher, and sisters Rosie Rose, Nellie Strunk and June Wiley.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Laurel Creek Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Arnold Hensley and beloved Brenda Sue McCoy, both of Laurel Creek; daughter Gladys Gilman of New Haven, W. Va.; four grandsons, Arnold Jr. and Dale Hensley of Laurel Creek, Tony Hensley of Beckley, W. Va., and Danny B. Gilman of New Haven, W. Va.; three granddaughters, Debrah Russell of Lakeland, Fla., Donna Barton of Jackson, Ohio, and Kim McCoy Chavis of Ashboro, N.C.; 10 great grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held at the Laurel Creek Freewill Baptist Church on Sunday, April 6, 2003 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. James Ed Baisden officiating.

Entombment will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens at Chapmanville, W. Va.

Pallbearers will be grandsons and family.

Visitation will be at the church after 5 p.m. Saturday evening.

Chafin Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Brookie McClanahan
Brookie McClanahan, 86, of Dingess died Friday, April 4, 2003, at the Logan Regional Medical Center.

She was born on Aug. 9, 1916, Ike and Rosa Dillon Hannah. She was homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Ance Finley and Earl McClanahan; one son, William Finley; one daughter, Amanda Messer; three brothers, Hayden, Andy, and Everett Hannah.

She is survived by two Tilda (Jack) Conn of Dingess, and Emma (Ranch) Boyd of Chicago; four sons, Joe (Cheryl) McClanahan and Jake (Wanda) Finley, both of Dingess, and Earl McClanahan Jr. and Andrew (Elaine) Finley, both of Chicago; one sister, Emma Nelson of Richmond, Ky.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, April 7, 2003, at the Trace Church of God in Dingess with the Revs. Jerry Grahm and Johnny Bailey officiating. Burial will be in the Dillon and Prince Cemetery at Dingess.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the James Funeral Home of Logan, W. Va.

Emma Anderson
Mrs. Emma Elizabeth "Libbey" Anderson, 74, of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Delbarton, W. Va., died Sunday, April 6, 2003 at Hatfield, Ky. She was born on July 29, 1928 at Holden, W. Va., the daughter of the late Adam and Esta Preece Evans.

Mrs. Anderson was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband Delvin "Andy" Anderson on April 2, 2003.

She is survived by one sister, Ada Evans of Delbarton, W. Va.; three brothers, Earl Evans of Hatfield, Ky., John Evans of Holden, W. Va., and Francis Marion (Jr.) Dillon of Delbarton, W. Va.; several nieces and nephews.

Services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Little Dove United Baptist Church at Belo, W. Va., with Rev. Jimmy Maynard. Burial will follow at the Preece Cemetery at Trace Creek, W. Va.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Evans Funeral Home in Chapmanville, W. Va., is in charge of arrangements.

Veva Williamson
Veva Hammond Williamson, 87, of Crum, W. Va., wife of Clifton Williamson (deceased), died on April 6, 2003. Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 9, 2003 at 1 p.m. at the Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home in Warfield, Ky., Roy Fluty officiating. Burial will follow at the Davis Cemetery in Crum, W. Va.

She was born December 4, 1915, in Martin County, Kentucky. She was the daughter of the late Ransom and Lura Hammond of Martin County, Kentucky. She was preceded in death by her sister Ruth Linville and two brothers, Mont Hammond and Ralph Hammond. She was a homemaker and precious mother of five children. Survivors include one daughter and four sons, Virginia and Glenn Prichard of Crum, W. Va., Glenn and Jeanie Williamson of Huntington, W. Va., Eugene and June Williamson of Kenova, W. Va., Rayburn and Wanda Williamson of Kenova, W. Va., and Douglas and Brenda Williamson of Crum, W. Va.

In addition to her children, she is survived by three sisters, three brothers and two sisters-in-law: Agnes Davenport of Ceredo, W. Va., Lucille and Jim Corns of Ceredo, W. Va., Jewel and Arlie Williams of South Williamson, Ky., Hoover and Sue Hammond of Leranto, Florida, Rudolph and Lou Ann Hammonds of Inez, Ky., Lowell and Gloria Hammond of Lovely, Ky., Mrs. Mabel Hammond of Inez, Ky., and Mrs. Grace Hammond of Huntington, W. Va.

She had 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Her family wishes to thank the Mingo/Martin County Home Health Staff and the Wayne County Community Services for outstanding care and services provided. Visitation will be at the Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home, Warfield Chapel, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, 2003.

Johanna Boomsma

Johanna "Jo" Boomsma entered her heavenly home on Tuesday, April 29, 2003 from Porter Memorial Hospital, Valparaiso, Ind., after a lengthy illness. She was born on Feb. 13, 1920 in Lansing, Ill., to Bert and Jennie (Ooms) Boomsma. With her family she moved to DeMotte, Ind., in 1928. She graduated from Wheatfield High School Class of 1938. Jo graduated from Calvin College in 1948 and earned a Master's Degree in Specialized Education at Michigan State University in 1951. She taught schools in Highland, Ind.; Grand Rapids, Mich.; Fremont, Mich.; and Jenison, Mich. She served as principal of the Shawnee Park Elementary School in Grand Rapids, Mich. In 1974 she moved to Inez, Ky., to found and serve as director of Appalachian Reach Out, a Christian service center for relief and education in Martin County. In 1978 she left ARO to organize and direct Christian Appalachian Homes, a center for abused wives and children. In 1991 she received the Distinguished Alumni Award of Calvin College, its highest honor. She retired in 1996 and moved back to DeMotte, Ind.

Jo is survived by her sister and beloved caregiver Evelyn Coffer, DeMotte, Ind., and a brother Rev. Clarence (Shirley) Boomsma, Grand Rapids, Mich.; brother-in-law James Jager, Grandville, Mich.; three nieces; four nephews; five great nieces; and three great nephews. Jo was preceded in death by her parents, Bert and Jennie (Ooms) Boomsma; sister Janet Jager; and brother-in-law Robert Coffer.

Family and friends may call on Thursday, May 1, 2003 from 2-8 p.m. at Jackson Funeral Service, 200 Third St. S.W., DeMotte, Ind. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 2, 2003 at 11 a.m. at First Christian Reformed Church, DeMotte, Ind., with Pastor Rudy Visser officiating. Interment will be at Holland Cemetery, DeMotte, Ind. Memorials may be made to Charity of Donor's Choice.

Lucille Ferrell

Lucille Maynard Ferrell, 67, of Williamson, W. Va., went to be with the Lord on April 29, 2003 at the Goodman Manor in Williamson, W. Va.

She was born March 12, 1936 in Delbarton, W. Va., a daughter of the late George Burgess (Dock) and Edna Ooten Maynard.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers John B. and Carvis Maynard and sister Dellene Kinder.

She was an employee of Wal-Mart of South Williamson, Ky., and a member of the Mountain Springs Freewill Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Eastern Star Elizabeth Charter 37 of Williamson, W. Va.

She is survived by five children, Susan Ferrell Courtney of Williamson, W. Va., George W. Ferrell of Roanoke, Va., Ginger (David) Hensley of Majestic, Ky., Gary M. Ferrell of Hartford, Conn., and Greta (Steve) Ferrell of Hardy, Ky.; six grandchildren, Anna Ferrell, Matthew Ferrell, Brandon Hensley, Erika Courtney, Merisa and Madyson Ferrell; sisters Bertha Farley of Delbarton, W. Va., Dolly York, Linda Policastro, Juanita Preece and Myrtle Kurowski, all of Cincinnati, Ohio; brothers Matt (Elsie) Maynard of Springfield, Ohio, Kaile (Francis) Maynard of Laurel Creek, W. Va., Harold (Shirley) Maynard of Delbarton, W. Va., and Daniel (Marge) Maynard of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Funeral services will be held at the Chafin Funeral Home on Friday afternoon, May 2, 2003, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Tommy Powers officiating.

Burial will follow in the Maynard Lockard Cemetery at Delbarton, W. Va.

Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Thursday evening at the chapel.

Chafin Funeral Home of Delbarton is in charge.

Lillian May

Lillian May, 80, a resident of Lakin Nursing Home, Point Pleasant, W. Va., died April 29, 2003 at Pleasant Valley Hospital, Point Pleasant.

She was born June 15, 1922 in McCarr, Ky., a daughter of the late Asa May and Ethel May Hall.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Pearl and Geraldine May; and a brother, Asa May Jr.

Survivors include two sisters, Edna Comer of Charleston, W. Va., and Helen Veebe of Leesville, S.C.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Friday, May 2, 2003 at Mountain View Memory Gardens, Maher, W. Va., with minister James Lockard officiating.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Chambers Funeral Home Inc.

Barbara Robinson

Barbara Ann Robinson, 57, of Bruno, W. Va., died at 3:25 a.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2003 at her residence.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday, May 2, 2003 at Greenville Freewill Baptist Church, Hunt, W. Va., with the Rev. Cecil Bartram officiating.

Burial will follow in the Grimmett Cemetery, Greenville, Hunt, W. Va.

Friends may call at the Greenville Freewill Baptist Church, Hunt, W. Va., on Thursday evening from 6 p.m. until 12 a.m.

Mounts Funeral Home of Gilbert is in charge of arrangements.

Sierra Montgomery
Sierra Nicole Montgomery died Saturday, May 9, 2003, at the Williamson Memorial Hospital.

She was born on May 9, 2003, the infant daughter of John Montgomery and Phyllis Evans of Varney.

She was preceded in death by grandfathers, Donald Griffey and George Gannon; grandmother, Ethel Ross; and special cousin, Angel Nicole Runyon.

In addition to her parents, survivors include, grandparents, Peggy Griffey and Rush Sheppard, both of Ragland, Audrey Ross, Troy Ross, and Bob Maynard, all of Rameytown.

Graveside services will be conducted Monday, May 12, 2003, at 1:30 p.m., at the Dotson Cemetery at Calloway Branch, Phelps, Ky., with the Rev. Dewitt Furrow officiating.

The Chambers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jake Hatfield
Jake Hatfield, 75, of Newtown, died on Friday, May 9, 2003, at Newtown.

He was born Feb. 22, 1928, to the late Joe and Mary Kinder Hatfield. He was a retired coal miner of 36 years and a member of the UMWA Local 1440.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-father, Eli Sullivan; two sons, Larry and Gary Hatfield; one brother, Estil Sullivan; three sisters, Verdie Dotson, Joann Sullivan and Rhoda Hatfield; and one granddaughter, Christina Hatfield.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Margaret Coleman Hatfield; four daughters, Mazie (Ellis) McCoy of Belfry, Ky., Barbara (John) Fry of Matewan, and Nancy (Butch) Collins and Estelene (David) Lester, both of Newtown; one brother, Walter Sullivan of Ransom, Ky.; one sister, Joyce Sullivan of Ransom; one daughter-in-law, Betty Hatfield; eight grandchildren, Angie Whitt, Selena Grimmett, Kevin Hatfield, Marlena Runyon, Daniel Hatfield, John Jacob Fry, Michael Lester and David Lester; and five great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Monday, May 12, 2003, at the Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry, Ky. Mike Smith, Raymond Stanley, Shawn Dotson, Jeff Dotson, Paul Varney and others will officiate. Burial will be in the Hatfield-Sulllivan Cemetery in Ransom.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Sunday, May 11, at the funeral home with special services at 7 p.m.

Rev. Jesse Perry

Rev. Jesse Lee Perry, 80, went to be with the Lord on May 19, 2003. He was born Nov. 26, 1922 to Melvin Perry and Bessie Horn, who preceded him in death. He was known affectionately by his friends and family as "Jake" or "The Bubble Gum Man."

He is survived by his wife Anna (Fitch) Perry; two sons, Jesse (Yvonne) Perry Jr. and Ben (Brenda) Perry of Beauty, Ky.; five daughters, Stella Perry, Lorene Johnson, Carol (Jerry) Ward, Deborah (Elbert) Osborne and Nancy Perry, all of Beauty, Ky.

Left behind are 12 grandchildren whom he loved very much: Jack M., Leslie (Ruthie) and Stephanie Perry, Larry (Denise) and David (Jamia) Johnson, Janet, Jerry (Donna) and Peyton Ward, April Perry, Elbert (Mary Jo), Eric Osborne and Kristy (Scott) Smith.

Also left behind are 12 great grandchildren whom he loved very much: Dustin, Cassidy and Jessi Perry, Logan and James David Johnson, Natasha, Samuel, Jacob and Hannah Ward, Courtney Damron, Ethan Osborne and Delena Smith.

Surviving also is one sister, Wilma (Don) Hinchman of South Point, Ohio, and one aunt Beatrice Preston of Michigan. He also left behind a host of friends and loved ones.

He was a minister for 35 years and a long standing member of the Big Elk Freewill Baptist Church. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in World War II.

Visitation began Tuesday, May 20, at Big Elk Freewill Baptist Church at 4 p.m. for family and 6 p.m. for the public and will continue Wednesday.

Funeral will be Thursday, May 22, at 1 p.m. with Frank Hay and Clyde Waller officiating.

Gregory Perdue

Gregory Lee Perdue, 52, of Holly Hills, Florida, formerly of Williamson, W. Va., died May 17, 2003 at his residence in Florida of natural causes.

Greg was born August 14, 1950 into the union of Otis "Duke" and Georgia Perdue of Williamson, W. Va. He was a graduate of the class of 1968 of Williamson High School and of the class of 1973 of Marshall University, with a degree in business management.

Left saddened to mourn his passing are his parents Mr. Otis "Duke" and Mrs. Georgia Perdue of Williamson, W. Va. He is also survived by brothers Mr. Terry Perdue of Jacksonville, Florida, Mr. Barry and Mr. Gary Perdue of Williamson, W. Va., two nephews, Travis and Brian Perdue of Mt. Zion, Kentucky, one niece Shontae Perdue of Lexington, Kentucky, one great-nephew Cole Nathaniel Perdue of Mt. Zion, Kentucky, and a host of family and friends.

Service will be held on Thursday, May 22, 2003 at 1 p.m. at the Grace Baptist Church, Williamson, W. Va., with the Rev. Ron Sanger officiating. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at the Mt. View Memorial Gardens at Maher, W. Va.

Serving as pallbearers will be Travis Perdue, Daniel Snavley, Brian Perdue, Mike Anderson, Larry Rosen and David Few.

Richmond Callaham Funeral Home of Inez, Kentucky, is in charge of arrangements.
