Barbara Blankenship

Barbara Ann Blankenship, 50, of Red Jacket, W. Va., died May 14, 2003 at her home.

She was born Sept. 8, 1952 in Mingo County, W. Va., the daughter of Lillian Coleman Norman of Hardy, Ky., and the late Albert Norman.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by one brother, Christopher Norman.

She was a homemaker and of the Pentecostal faith.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include daughter Virginia Lillian Ferrell of Red Jacket, W. Va.; son James Andy Ferrell of Red Jacket; brothers Albert Norman Jr. of Edgarton, W. Va., Sammy Norman of Hendersonville, N.C., Jessie Norman and Fritz Allen Norman, both of Hardy, Ky.; sisters Angela Blankenship of McCarr, Ky., and Debbie Blankenship of Edgarton, W. Va.; and one grandchild, Kayla Ann Ferrell.

Services will be held Sunday, May 18, 2003 at the Woodman Community Church, Woodman, Ky., at 12 p.m. with the Revs. Odis Blankenship and DeWitt Furrow officiating.

Burial will follow in the family cemetery at Vulcan, W. Va.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will begin on Friday, May 16, 2003, at 6 p.m. at the church with services nightly at 7 p.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of Phelps Funeral Service.

Billy Jack Yates

Billy Jack Yates, 70, of 405 Brookmere Road, Simpsonville, S.C., died April 30, 2003, at Hillcrest Hospital.

Born in Merrimac, W. Va., he was a son of the late Nicholas and Brady McCoy Yates. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict, and was a supervisor with Charleston Air Force Base, after which he retired from Kemet. Mr. Yates was a member of Glendale Baptist Church in Mauldin.

Mr. Yates was a Clemson football fan, an avid golfer, loved airplanes, and coached Little League baseball. He was a loving husband, daddy, granddaddy and friend. He loved the Lord and his church.

Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Clara Butler Yates; a daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Allen McAbee, of Gray Court; four grandchildren, Jennifer Jefferies, Ryan Jefferies and Shelby and Courtney McAbee; three sisters, Frances Lambert of McCarr, Kentucky, Mary Harden of Virginia and Carol Price of Georgia; two brothers, John Yates of Hardy, Ky., and Kenneth Yates of Phelps, Ky.; two sisters-in-law, Joan Butler and Anne Dickson; and two brothers-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. William D. Butler and Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Butler, all of South Carolina; also numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held May 3 at the Glendale Baptist Church in Simpsonville, S.C. Burial was at the Graceland East Memorial Park.

Wayne Church

Wayne Church of Thacker, W. Va., died Tuesday, May 6, 2003 at his home.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced at a later date by Chambers Funeral Home Inc.

James Coy

James Robert Coy, 82, of the Tamcliff Section of Gilbert, W. Va., died at 3:20 a.m. Monday, May 5, 2003 at Williamson Memorial Hospital, Williamson, W. Va.

He was born Nov. 3, 1920 in Lookout, W. Va., a son of the late William and Nancy Nutter Coy.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Ray Coy; one infant daughter, Charlotte Coy; two brothers, Clarence Coy and Joe Coy; and two sisters, Mabel Reynolds and Ruth Coffman.

James was a retired coal miner, formerly employed by Island Creek Coal Company. He was a deacon at the Tamcliff Tabernacle Church, Tamcliff Section of Gilbert, W. Va., for 11 years. He was also a loving father and grandfather. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the demolition force and also as a cook. He was an avid hunter.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Rookard Coy of the Tamcliff Section of Gilbert; one daughter, Sandra Sue Smith of Sutton, W. Va.; two sons, William Francis Coy of Cyclone, W. Va., and Timothy Keith Coy of Gilbert, W. Va.; eight grandchildren, Bryan Neil Smith of Sutton, W. Va., Charles Curtis Smith and Jeffery Allen Smith, both of Baltimore, Md., Michelle Coy Smith of Mooresville, N.C., Patricia Ann Coy of Cottle Creek, N.C., Cory James Coy, Dewayne Christian and Larry Joe Mounts, all of Gilbert, W. Va.; three sisters, Grace Tolley of Nettie, W. Va., Beatrice Smith of Union, W. Va., and Martha Nolan of Coal City, W. Va.; two brothers, Wallace Coy of Mount Hope, W. Va., and John Coy of Perrysville, Md.; four great grandchildren, Ryan Smith and Brandon Smith of Gassaway, W. Va., Bobby Smith and Chrissy Smith of Baltimore, Md.; and a special friend, Gerald Marsingill of the Tamcliff Section of Gilbert.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, May 8, 2003 at the Tamcliff Tabernacle Church, Tamcliff Section of Gilbert, W. Va., with the Rev. Diamond Carter officiating.

Burial will follow in the Forest Lawn Cemetery, Pecks Mill, W. Va.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call at the Tamcliff Tabernacle Church, Tamcliffe Section of Gilbert, W. Va., on Wednesday evening from 6-10 p.m. Special services will begin at 7 p.m.

Mounts Funeral Home of Gilbert is in charge of the arrangements.

Elma Littrell

Elma Garrett Littrell, 75, of Greensboro, N.C., died Monday, May 5, 2003 at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

She was born March 30, 1928, to the late Benjamin Harrison and Allie Caudill Garrett.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Harrogate Cemetery, Harrogate, Tenn., with Rev. Gary Miller officiating.

The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Friday morning prior to the graveside service at Coffey Mortuary Inc., Harrogate, Tenn.

Terry McKown
Terry D. "Butch" McKown, a loving husband, father and friend, peacefully passed away on Sunday, May 11, 2003, at the age of 54. His ability to touch those around him, loving demeanor and sense of humor made his life a gift and blessing to those who knew him best. He was born Aug. 17, 1948, in Ragland, W. Va., and grew up in Delbarton, W. Va., where he graduated from Burch High School. At the age of 20, he moved with the family to Albion, Mich., and later graduated from Spring Arbor College with an education degree. He briefly worked in the Albion Public School System as a substitute teacher, and was an employee at Harvard Industries for 31 years. Surviving family members include mother, Myrtle of Albion; wife of 31 years, Illona; three children, Allison (Glenn) McRae of Horton, Terry T. of Tecumseh, Kyle of Concord; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and many, many friends. He enjoyed fishing, trips to West Virginia and South Haven, the company of friends and family, and making others laugh. He always made new friends wherever he went, always strived to make those around him feel comfortable and was a teacher of many, many things. His kindness, loving nature, generosity and sense of humor will remain in our hearts forever. He will be sadly missed, but his love and spirit will live on inside of each person that he was able to touch. Funeral services were at S.D. Lauer Funeral Home, Concord, on Thursday, May 15, with Rev. Scott Scheel officiating. Interment was at Maple Grove Cemetery. For those who wish, memorial contributions should be directed to Concord Presbyterian Church or American Cancer Society.

Charles Justice
Charles "Bo" Justice, 72, of Delbarton, passed away on Thursday, May 15, 2003, at the Williamson Memorial Hospital.

He was born on Dec. 6, 1930, at Puritan Mines, W. Va., a son of the late Elva and Martha Evans Justice. He was retired from AT&T company in Cleveland, Ohio; he was a U.S. Marine veteran, having served in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the honor guard for Gen. Mark Clark. Mr. Justice also served on the utility board for the town of Delbarton.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, James Justice, and an infant sister.

He leaves behind his wife of 46 years, Betty Rutherford Justice; three brothers, Arvel Justice and Elva Justice Jr., both of Ohio, and Herman Justice of New Mexico; three sisters, Ida Mae Slone and Ann Justice, both of Ohio, and Brookie Meade of Delaware; two brothers-in-law, James Rutherford of Ohio and Bill Rutherford of Delbarton; and a host of special friends.

Funeral services will be Sunday, May 18, 2003, at the Chafin Funeral Home of Delbarton at 1 p.m. The Rev. Lewis Hall Jr. will officiate. Burial will follow in the Curry-Farley Cemetery at Elk Creek, W. Va. The Disabled American Veterans of Belfry Chapter 141 will conduct military rites.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Saturday, May 17, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Patricia Vance
Patricia Ann Vance, 61, of Justice, went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 16, 2003, at the Logan Regional Medical Center.

She was born on May 25, 1941, in Herndon, W. Va., a daughter of the Reba Brown Brinkley of Oceana, W. Va., and the late Arnold Brinkley. She was a members of the Justice Tabernacle Church.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Angel Nicole Nickles; two brothers, Harold Brinkley and Beryl Brinkley; and one sister, Norma Jean Amburgy.

Other than her mother, Mrs. Vance is survived by her husband of 44 years, Charles Vance; one daughter, Regina (James) Nickles of Justice; one son, Tommy (Stacey) Vance of Jonesborough, Tenn.; two brothers, Danny Brinkley and Robert Brinkley, both of Oceana; three sisters, Kathleen Cooper and Dana Mullens, both of Oceana, and Joyce Cawley, of Vinton; three grandchildren, Hunter Nickles of Justice, and Bianca Stone and Dakota Whitson, both of Jonesborough.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, May 19, 2003, at the Mounts Funeral Home of Gilbert with the Revs. Clifford Rawls and Johnny Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the Davis Cemetery at Justice.

Pallbearers will be Horace Vance, Junior Staton, Lee Hatfield, David Simpson, Kent Vance and Kenny Mitchell.

Visitation will be Sunday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Nancy L. Scott
Nancy L. Scott, 59, of Piqua, Ohio, died Saturday, May 24, 2003, at the Appalachian Regional Hospital in South Williamson, Ky.

She was born in Matewan on Feb. 16, 1944, to the late Tom and Willie Wright Boyd. She married James L. (Loather) Scott, on Oct. 28, 1961. She was a member of the First Freewill Baptist Church of Piqua, a graduate of Matewan High School and retired in 1993 from Copeland of Sidney.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Boyd.

Along with her husband, Mrs. Scott is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, James R. and Tina Scott of Piqua and Jarrod R. Scott, all of Piqua; one daughter, Joy L. Magnuson of Troy; seven grandchildren, Anastasia Myers, James Magnuson, Kegan Magnuson, Kory Magnuson, Kiel Scott, Kobe Scott, Kendra Magnuson; one great grandson, Kaleb Magnuson; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul and Margaret Boyd of Menden, W. Va., Jesse and Mary Delores Boyd of Pickerington, Troy and Regina Smith of Delbarton; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Edith Randolph of Crossville, Tenn., Anna Evans of Pickerington, and Brenda and Ivan Perry of Dewitt, Mich.

Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, May 29, 2003, at 10 a.m. in the Jamieson and Yannucci Funeral Home in Piqua with the Rev. Dennie Cantrell officiating. Burial will follow in the Miami Park Cemetery in Covington, Ky.

Visitation will be Wednesday, May 28, at the funeral home.

Charles Buzzard
Charles Buzzard, 63, of Ypsalanti, Mich., died Saturday, May 24, 2003, at the St. Joseph Hospital following a lingering illness.

He was born on March 28, 1940, in Logan, W. Va., a son of the late Summers and Lennie Vance Buzzard. He was a 1961 graduate of Lenore HIgh School, a retired employee of the General Motors Corporation, and member of the First Freewill Baptist Church in Bellville, Mich.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Charles Buzzard Jr.

Mr. Buzzard is survived by two sisters, Mary Gibson of Ypsalanti, Bernice Smith of Omaha, Neb.; one brother, Tom Buzzard of Minneapolis, Minn.; and special friends, Harold and Donna Smith of Ypsalanti.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at the Chafin Funeral Home of Delbarton with the Revs. Ray and Rick Williamson officiating. Burial will follow in the Vance Cemetery at Holden, W. Va.

Pallbearers will include nephews Joe, Steve and Rob Gibson, cousins Rick Williamson and Ernie Fields.

Visitation will be Tuesday, May 27, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the funeral home.

Wayne Church

Wayne Allen Church, 42, of Thacker passed away on Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at his residence.

He was born Sept. 11, 1960, at the Appalachian Regional Hospital in South Williamson, Ky. He was the son of Scotty Church Sr. of Thacker and the late Virgie Church.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Whitt.

He is survived, in addition to his father, by his wife, Brenda Church of Thacker; one son, Patrick Wayne Church of Lincolntin, N.C.; five brothers, Scotty Church Jr., Alonzo Church, Gary Church and Rocky Church, all of Thacker, and Floyd Church of Pikeville, Ky.; four sisters, Linda Baisden and Lois Compton, both of Thacker, Joann Kitts of Red Jacket, and Irene Hess of Hatfield Bottom; and a host of brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and friends who will miss him dearly.

Funeral services will be Saturday, May 10, 2003, at 1 p.m. at the Pentecostal Tabernacle Church in Edgarton with the Revs. Ronnie Wolford and Johnny Gooslin officiating. Burial will follow in the Varney Cemetery at Lynn.

Pallbearers will be Danny, Howard and Scotty Baisden, Jimmy Sincell Jr., Gary Church Jr. and Harold May.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m., Thursday, May 8, at the church. Services will be held nightly at 7 p.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of the West Funeral Home of Justiceville, Ky.

Cora Robinson

Cora Lee Robinson, 92, of Ona, W. Va., formerly of Delbarton, W. Va., and Ashland, Ky., passed away May 6, 2003 in the St. Mary's Hospital in Huntington, W. Va.

Born Dec. 23, 1910 in Delbarton, W. Va., she was the daughter of the late Richard and Martha Ferrell Cloud. She was also preceded in death by husband Cecil Arlen Robinson; two brothers, Christopher and Brack Fain; and sister Virginia Hibner.

She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Ashland, Ky.

Survivors include brother Hugh Johnse Fain of Norwalk, Ohio; sister Margaret Smith of Delbarton, W. Va.; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the Chafin Funeral Home on Friday, May 9, 2003 at 11 a.m.

Burial will follow in the Ferrell Cemetery at Delbarton, W. Va.

Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Jesse Aiderman
Jesse Junior Alderman, 75 of Stirrat, West Virginia, departed this life May 23, 2003 at his residence from a long term illness. He was born September 13, 1927 at Stirrat and was a son of Mrs. Nora Lenis Woosley Alderman of Columbus, Ohio and the late William Henry Alderman.

In addition to his father, one sister, Mrs. Leatrice Ferrell preceded him in death.

Mr. Alderman was a retired miner, working 41 years for W.P. Coal Company at Stirrat. He was a member of the UMWA Local Union 5921. Mr. Alderman was a Christian and of the Freewill Baptist faith.

Mr. Alderman is survived by his wife of 47 years, Betty Lois Williams Alderman' four children, William H. (Pamela) alderman of Chapmanville, Debra (Roger) Mayo of Chauncey, Lois (Bill) Johnson of Fairborn, Ohio and Dennis (Kathy) Baker of Chapmanville; ten grandchildren, Will Alderman and fiance Julie Adams of Chapmanville, Whitlea Shae Alderman of Chapmanville, Kristin and Matthew Mayor of Chauncey, Karen Meade of Dayton, Ohio, Melinda (David) Vieu of Enon, Ohio, Trina Klinginsmith of Dayton, Ohio, Michelle (David) Johnson of Fairborn, Ohio, Dennis Ray Baker of Chapmanville and Lois Anne (Dwight) Vance of Chapmanville; nine great-grandchildren, Chelsea and Chase Meade, Christopher, Elizabeth and Chloe Klinginsmith, Ryan and Nicholas Vieu and Tyler and Joshua Johnson; three brothers, James (Darlene) Alderman, Bill (Gail) Alderman, and Carl Ray Alderman, all of Columbus, Ohio; four sisters, Hazel (James) Nelson of Columbus, Ohio, Gay (Gilbert) Sexton of Barnabus, Henrietta (Eugene) Hileman of Barboursville and Sue (Rueben) Gil man of Columbus, Ohio; caregiver, Barbara Daniels; several nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends also survive him.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at 1 p.m., at Collins Funeral Home in Switzer with the Reverend Preston Vance and Reverend Randy Skeens. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery at Pecks Mill, West Virginia.

Pallbearers will be Will Alderman, Roger Mayo, Bill Johnson, John Thomas Alderman, Dennis Ray Baker and Curtis Lester.

Friends may call from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at Collins Funeral Home in Switzer and one hour prior to services.
