Bruce Johnson

Bruce Conrad Johnson, 51, of Kermit, formerly of Ragland, died at his residence on Friday, July 11, 2003.

He was born on June 13, 1952, in Holden, W. Va., a son of the late James Wesley and Mildred Lambert Johnson. He was a former employee of the Timpken Company in Columbus, Ohio. Mr. Johnson was a minister in the Pentecostal Church and a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, John Davis; one brother, Gary Johnson; two sisters, Joann Davis and Tina Davis (an infant).

He is survived by two daughters, Kimberly Johnson and Amber Johnson, both of Chauncey, Ohio; nine brothers, Wesley Johnson of Princeton, W. Va., James R. Johnson and John P. Johnson, both of Lenore, Bobby Johnson of Bartely, W. Va., Douglas Johnson and Barry Johnson, both of Kermit, Grover Johnson of Georgetown, Ky., and William Carnal and Robert Carnal of Lake Pontchutoula, La.; three sisters, Debbie Mills of Lenore, Linda Justice of Taylorville, and Ginger French of Welch, W. Va.; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at noon, Sunday, July 13, 2003, at the Warfield Church of God with the Rev. Kenneth Gore officiating. Burial will follow in the Chafin Cemetery at Burning Creek in Kermit.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Hatfield Funeral Home of Toler, Ky.

Emma Newsome

Emma Jean Newsome, 75, of Newtown died Friday, July 11, 2003, at the Williamson Memorial Hospital.

She was born on Dec. 22, 1927, in McDowell County, W. Va., the daughter of the late William and Gladys Chafin Cooper. She was a homemaker.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Newsome was preceded in death by her husband, William Franklin Newsome; one son, David Michael Newsome; two daughters, Gladys Mae Newsome and Carol Jean Newsome; and three brothers, Carl Cooper, Billy Cooper and Donald Cooper.

She is survived by three sons, William Newsome Jr. of Dallas, Texas, Albert Newsome, of Newtown, and Rush Newsome of Williamson; three daughters, Kay Hatfield of Forest Hills, Ky., Brenda Newsome of Matewan, and Martha Newsome of Shelbyville, Ky.; 18 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at noon, Tuesday, July 15, 2003, at the Weaver Mortuary in West Williamson with the Rev. Franklin Mounts officiating. Burial will follow in the Chafin-Harmon Cemetery in Hode, Ky.

Visitation will be Monday, July 14, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the mortuary.

Claudia E. Burmeister
A celebration of the life of Claudia E. Burmeister will be held at the Memorial United Methodist Church in West Williamson on July 15, 2003, at 1:30 p.m., with the Rev. Greg Blair officiating.

Mrs. Burmeister, a 60-year resident of Williamson, died July 3, 2003, at her daughter's home in Athens Ga. She was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Maude Stuart.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be made to Memorial United Methodist Church, 1608 West 6th Ave., Williamson, WV 25661 or St. Mary's Hospice Services, 1500 Oglethorpe Ave., Suite C., Athens, Ga. 30606.

Jeremiah Cleve Johnson
Jeremiah Cleve Johnson, 23, of Crum, died Saturday, July 12, 2003, at Kermit as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born January 6, 1980, in Louisa, Ky., Jeremiah was a son of Harold and Anna Lee Horn of Crum.

He was the husband of Christie Renee Farley Johnson and the father of Jeremiah Russell Johnson, who also died in the accident.

In addition to his parents, Jeremiah is survived by three brothers, Brian James Johnson of Warfield, Ky., and Cody Crum and James Crum, both of Crum; six sisters, Vanessa Horn, Samantha Horn, Ivory Sharon Walker, Ashley Crum, Jennifer Crum and Heidi Crum all of Crum and one step-brother, Harlan Horn of Crum.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 15, 2003, at the Inez Chapel of Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home with Emanuel Ferguson and George Nelson officiating.

Burial will follow in the Parsley Cemetery at Crum.

Visitation will take place after 5 p.m., Monday, July 14, 2003, at the funeral home.

Arrangements are under the direction of Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home, Inez, Ky.

Christie Farley Johnson
Christie Renee Farley Johnson, 19, of Crum, died Saturday, July 12, 2003, at Kermit as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born November 15, 1983, in Cabell County, Christie was a daughter of Terry and Donna Farley of Crum.

She was the wife of Jeremiah Cleve Johnson and the mother of Jeremiah Russell Johnson, who also died in the accident.

In addition to her parents, Christie is survived by a sister, Jennifer Mae Andrus of Crum.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 15, 2003, at the Inez Chapel of Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home with Emanuel Ferguson and George Nelson officiating.

Burial will follow in the Parsley Cemetery at Crum.

Visitation will take place after 5 p.m., Monday, July 14, 2003, at the funeral home.

Arrangements are under the direction of Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home, Inez, Ky.

Jeremiah Russell Johnson, 6 months, of Crum died Saturday, July 12, 2003, at Kermit as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born January 9, 2003, in Cabell County, he was the son of Jeremiah and Christie Johnson, who also died in the accident.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 15, 2003, at the Inez Chapel of Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home with Emanuel Ferguson and George Nelson officiating.

Virginia 'Ann' Marcum
Virginia "Ann" Marcum, 40, of Crum, died Saturday, July 12, 2003, at Kermit, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Virginia was born January 13, 1963, at Crum, a daughter of the late Byrd and Mae Farley.

She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Brandon Marcum.

Virginia is survived by her husband, Ronald Van Marcum of Crum; one son, Adam Van Marcum of Crum; five brothers, Charles (Ina) Farley of Hiddenite, North Carolina; James Ronald (Mildred) Farley of Columbus, Ohio; Harvey Warren (Ann) Farley, Terry Anderson (Donna) Farley and Jerry Isaac Farley, all of Crum; one sister, Nancy Elaine (Danny) Stumbo; two sisters-in-law, Sharon and Jessica; and one aunt, Maudie (Warren Smith) of Columbus.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 15, 2003, at the Inez Chapel of Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home, with Jesse Stroud officiating.

Burial will follow in the Perry Point Cemetery at Crum.

Visitation will be after 5 p.m., Monday, July 14, 2003, at the funeral home.

Arrangements are under the direction of Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home, Inez, Ky.

Tildon Staton
Tildon Staton, 85, of Sprigg, went to be with the Lord Saturday, July 12, 2003. He died at Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital, South Williamson, Ky.

He was born May 7, 1918, a son of the late John and Arizona McCoy Staton.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Vary Staton; three sons, Tommy Staton, Steve Staton and John Staton; five brothers, Johnny Staton, George Staton, Oscar Staton, Phillip Staton and Freelon Staton; and five sisters, Sadie York, Opal Phillips, Garnet Plymale, Lizzie McCoy and Meril Strafford.

A U.S. Army veteran, Tildon was a retired coal miner and of the Christian faith. He was a member of the Williamson Moose Lodge and the UMWA and he was a mason.

Tildon is survived by four sons, Tilden (Cheryl) Staten, Jr., of Russell Springs, Ky.; Phillip Harrison (Suk) Staton of O'Fallon, Ill.; Michael Charles Staton of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Mark Staton of Sprigg; three daughters, Brenda Sue Ball, Teresa Staton, and Linda Staton, all of Sprigg; one sister, Shirley Staton of Beckley; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at Weaver Mortuary in West Williamson, with Rev. Virgil Hamilton presiding.

Burial will follow in the Mt. View Memory Gardens at Huddy, Ky.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be 6-9 p.m., Tuesday, July 15, 2003, with special services at 7 p.m., at the mortuary.

Arrangements are under the direction of Weaver Mortuary, West Williamson.

Joe Hatfield
Joe Hatfield, 27, of Red Jacket died Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at approximately 1 a.m. due to an automobile accident in Hinton, W. Va., where he was on a camping trip.

Born Oct. 13, 1975, at Williamson Appala-chian Regional Hospital, South Williamson, Ky., he was the son of Mike and Trish Coyer Hatfield.

He was preceded in death by grandfathers, Roby Hatfield and Andy Coyer; and grandmother, Ruth Coyer.

He was self-employed owner of Joe Hatfield Transport, Inc., and worked with his father in the family owned business V &J Trucking Inc. He was an officer of the Hugh C. Boyd Lodge No. 119 at Red Jacket.

He was very well liked and loved by many and will be most sadly missed by all who knew him.

He is survied by mom and dad, Mike and Trish Hatfield of Red Jacket; a sister, Valerie (Doug) Perkins of Meador; grandmother, Ruth Hatfield of Williamson; two very special nieces, Shayla Justice and Summer Perkins; aunt, Leah Ann (Don) Glass of High Point, N.C.; uncle, Hershel Ray Coyer of Newtown.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 25, 2003, at Full Gospel Church at Matewan with Fred Taylor officiating. Masonic rites will be conducted at the funeral. Burial will follow in the Ellison Hatfield Cemetery at Newtown.

Doug Perkins, Jarrod McComas, Stuart Harper, Mark Sizemore, Dwayne Woolum, Billy Hatfield, Gerald Pack, Jason Pack, Kelly Cisco and Ron Chafin will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held Thursday from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the church.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Chambers Funeral Home, Inc., of Matewan.

Lora Jewell
Lora Jewell, 73, of Chattaroy passed away Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at the Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital, South Williamson, Ky.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Weaver Mortuary of West Williamson.

Denton Hatfield

Denton B. Spratt Hatfield, 77, of Gilbert joined family and friends in the Lord's House on Wednesday, July 2, 2003.

Born July 26, 1925, at Gilbert, she was preceded in death by parents, Thomas R. and Pearl B. Stamper Spratt; husband, A. Warren Hatfield; brothers, Audrey and Rouhier Spratt; and granddaughter Malissa Ann Adkins.

She is survived by brother Douglas Noel Spratt of Newport News, Va.; children and spouses, Stephen R. and Dimple A. Hatfield, Lexington, Ky.; Deborah A. ad John L. Adkins, Pounding Mill, Va.; Karen and James H. White, Gilbert; and Kevin D. and Cherri Hatfield, Gilbert; and grandchildren, John Warren Adkins and Jennifer Adkins Browning; Aimee, Angela and Stephen Hatfield; and J. Christopher White; and great grandchildren, Jessica and Donovan Browning.

Graveside services will be held at Hatfield Cemetery at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 5, 2003, with Pastor Will Smith officiating. Pallbearers will be Stephen R. Hatfield, Kevin D. Hatfield, John L. Adkins, James H. White, John Warren Adkins, J. Christopher White, and Stephen D. Hatfield.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Women's Circle of the Gilbert Presbyterian Church.

Mounts Funeral Home in Gilbert is in charge of arrangements.

Joyce Kemple

Joyce Kemple, 74, of Williamson, died Thursday, July 3, 2003, at the Charleston (W. Va.) Area Medical Center.

She was born on Sept. 3, 1928, in Pike County, Ky., a daughter of the late Clyde and Sofie Elkins Slone. Mrs. Kemple was a retired accountant, a member of the Williamson Lions Club and the Fifth Avenue Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Kemple.

She is survived by one daughter, Debbie Harris of Charleston; and two grandchildren, Nick and Rhett Harris of Charleston.

Funeral arrangements will be at 2 p.m., Sunday, July 6, 2003, at the Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry, Ky. Entombment will follow in the Mountain View Memory Gardens mausoleum in Maher.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Pansy Dehart

Pansy Burgraff Dehart, 77, of Matewan died Friday, July 4, 2003, at the Williamson Memorial Hospital.

She was born on Sept. 26, 1925, a daughter of the late Albert and Lessie Stafford Burgraff. She was the manager of John's Place restaurant in Matewan for 30 years and a member of the North Matewan Church of God.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Dehart was preceded in death by her husband Ermil Dehart; three brothers, Johnny, Huston, and Billy Burgraff; and one sister, Irene Taylor.

She is survived by two sons, Jerry (Yvonne) Dehart of Matewan, and Roger (Judy) Dehart of Ararat, N.C.; one daughter, Mary Lou Blackburn of Williamson; one son-in-law, Larry Blackburn of Wayne, W. Va.; one sister, Lenore Howell of Columbus, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Kim (Paul Andrew) Marcum, Larry "Bo" Blackburn, Becky (Daniel) Mounts, Steve Perkins, Roger Lee Dehart, Ermil Kristin (Trina) Dehart, and Jerry Michael (Beth) Dehart; 12 great grandchildren, Chris and Core Cline, Ashley Blackburn, Brooke and Seth Mounts, Lee, Kayla, Anthony, Cory, Marissa, Logan, and Mary Beth Dehart.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Monday, July 7, 2003, at the Full Gospel Church in Matewan with Lee Dean and Jackie Meade officiating. Burial will follow in the Buskirk Cemetery in McCarr, Ky.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, July 5, and Sunday July 6, with services at 7 p.m. nightly at the church.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Chambers Funeral Home of Matewan.
