Cleo 'Hoover' Maynard
Cleo "Hoover" Maynard, 76, of Lenore, W. Va., passed away Sunday, September 14, 2003, at his residence.

Born May 30, 1927, in Naugatuck, W. Va., to the late Pete Maynard and Fanny Maynard, he was a retired foreman for the W. Va. Dept. of Highways.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Vicie Lee Maynard; brothers, Sam, Cecil, Jay, John and Willie Maynard; sisters, Betty Brinager, Alice Runyon and Ednea Evans.

Surviving are his sons, Carlos (Tammy) Maynard of Lenore, W. Va., John (Kim) Maynard of Lenore, W. Va., Pete Maynard of Lenore, W. Va., Raymond (Maggie) Maynard of Lenore, W. Va. and Bill (Jean) Parsley of Lenore, W. Va.; daughters, Carlene (Harold) Davis of Lenore, W. Va. and Ruby Brewer of Lenore, W. Va.; brothers, H.P. Maynard of Naugatuck, W. Va. and Oscar Maynard of Racine, Ohio; sisters, Lottie Marcum of Naugatuck, W. Va. and Ethel Maynard of Boisservaine, Va.; 14 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and a host of nephews and nieces.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 17, 2003, 2 p.m., at Victory Christian Center at Lenore, W. Va. with Rev. Terry Blankenship officiating. Interment will follow at Newsome Ridge Cemetery at Naugatuck, W. Va. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held 6 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Victory Christian Center with services at 7 p.m.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler, Ky.

Carey Lee Lester
Carey Lee Lester, Sr., 29, of Market Street, Man, W. Va., passed away Friday, September 12, 2003, at his home.

Born September 19, 1973, in Man, W. Va., the Leon Lester of Baisden, W. Va. and Debbie Clark of Man, W. Va., he was a coal miner at Rock House Creek Mine.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Renita Ann Lester and paternal grandparents Sherman and Arminta Lester.

He attended Freedom Full Gospel Assembly of Prayer at Hampden, W. Va.

Surviving are his wife, Dorey Lester of Man, W. Va., ; two sons, Christian Patrick Lester of the home and Corey Lee Lester, Jr. of the home; one daughter, Hannah Faye Lester of the home; half brother, Donovan Lester of Baisden, W. Va.; two sisters, Terrina (Mark) Johnson of Wharncliffe, W. Va. and Crystal Lester of Baisden, W. Va.; maternal grandparents Jack Clark of Lake, W. Va. and Shirley Clark of Toledo, Ohio; mother, Debbie (Fiancee Don Hoosier) Clark of Man, W. Va.; father, Leon (wife, Mellisa) Lester of Baisden, W. Va.; two nieces, Brooke Toler of Emmett, W. Va and Madison Payter of Man, W. Va.; two nephews, Daniel and Chaston Johnson of man, W. Va.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 17, 2003, 1 p.m. at Freedom Full Gospel Assembly House of Prayer with Rev. Carl Wolford officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Log Cemetery, Baisden, W. Va.

Active pallbearers are Arnie Toler, Richie Ruiz, Caleb Lester, Jamie New, Richard Collins and Tommy Lester. Honorary pallbearers are Jamie Lester, Mark Chaston Cline, Julius Lester, David Sparks, Teddy New, Glenn Johnson and Anthony Jude.

Friends may call Freedom Full Gospel Assembly House of Prayer Tuesday after 6 p.m.

Lannie Hatfield

Lannie Rell Hatfield, 55, of Wharncliffe, W. Va., passed away Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003, at South Appalachian Regional Hospital in South Williamson, Ky.

Born December 4, 1947, in Wharncliffe to the late Ezra and Arminda Browning Hatfield, he was a disabled coal miner. He was of the Church of God faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Danny Hatfield and Marvin Hatfield; one sister, Roberta Hatfield; one step sister, Kizzie Morrison; and one step brother, Jimmy Hatfield.

Surviving are his wife, Easter Hatfield of Wharncliffe; stepmother, Nila Hatfield of Wharncliffe; two sons, Ezral Hatfield of Wharncliffe, and Jerry (and wife Annette) Hatfield of Wharncliffe; one daughter, Rita Hatfield of the home; two grandchildren, Jerry Hatfield Jr. of Wharncliffe, and Jessica Hatfield of Wharncliffe; two brothers, Morris Hatfield of Isaban, W. Va. and Edgar Hatfield of Columbus, Ohio; four sisters, Ruby Rister of Columbus, Wilma Lee Trent of Sunbury, Ohio, Racheal Davis of Cleveland, Ohio and Lois Trent of Wharncliffe; and special aunt, Joyce Hatfield of Logan, W. Va.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, 1 p.m., at Mounts Funeral Home Chapel, Gilbert, W. Va. with Rev. Denny May officiating. Burial will follow in Dotson Cemetery, Wharncliffe.

Serving as pallbearers are Don Ward, Jimmy Ward, Bruce Gibson, Jerome Mounts, Bart Hatfield, and Brett Hatfield.

Friends may call the Mounts Funeral Home Chapel on Friday evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Mounts Funeral Home of Gilbert.

Betty Lou Baisden

Betty Lou Baisden 53, a resident of Hodgenville, formerly of New Haven, Ky., and a native of Delbarton, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003, at her residence in Hodgenville, Ky.

Born Feb. 11, 1950, in Delbarton, she was a Baptist and attended the Ovensen Heights Baptist Church in Hodgenville. She worked as a beautician in the Belfry, Ky., area for many years.

She was preceded in death by her father, Kelly Baisden.

Survivors include one son, Glenn E. Stratton II of Bardstown, Ky.; two daughters, Vanita Faye Anderson, Hodgenville and Lisha Mounts of Loretto; her mother, Nell Hammond Baisden of Hardy, Ky.; three brothers, Harrison Baisden, Donnie Baisden and Leonard Baisden, all of Williamson; four sisters, Patricia Marcun, Helen Pinion and Mattie Durham, all of Hardy, and Monetta Blankenship of Newark, Ohio; five grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; special friend, Tom King.

Funeral services for Betty Lou Baisden were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of the William R. Rust Funeral Home in New Haven with the Rev. Richard Carver, pastor of the Ovensen Heights Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the River-view Cemetery in New Haven.

Visitation was held at the William R. Rust Funeral Home, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, 9 a.m. until the time of the service.

William R. Rust Funeral Home in New Haven is in charge of arrangements.

Shirley Zank

Mrs. Shirley Lorraine Zank, 68, of Albany, Ga., died Wednesday, September 24, 2003, at her residence following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. CDT, Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at the Chapel of James and Lipford Funeral Home with Rev. Gene Cone officiating. Burial will follow in Noma Cemetery with James and Lipford Funeral Home of Graceville directing. Family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Mrs. Zank was born in Williamson on Nov. 9, 1934. She was a homemaker and of the Protestant faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Wayne and Nora Elkins West; husband, Douglas Zank; sisters, Kathleen Stump and Lassie West.

She is survived by four sons, David Zank of Kentucky; Gregory Zank of Illinois, Glen Zank of Ohio and Tommy Zank of Indiana; three brothers, Harlan West of Georgia, Frank Thompson and Warren Thompson, both of Ohio; two sisters, Grace Booten of Noma and Carol Davenport of West Virginia; and seven grandchildren.

Dovie Smith

Dovie Marie Smith, 82, of Kermit, died on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003, at the Cabell-Huntington (W. Va.) Hospital.

She was born on Jan. 27, 1921, in Camp Creek, the daughter of the late Lea and Oma Brumfield Brewer. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of God, leaving behind a testimony that will never die.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Smith.

She is survived by four sons, Walter (Patricia) Smith of Dunlow, W. Va., and Earl (Irene) Smith, Bruce (Ruth) Smith and Edward (Pamela) Smith, all of Marrowbone; five daughters, Sylvia Stepp and Bonnie (Ralph) May, both of Marrowbone, Faye (Everett) Zeek of Kermit, Joyce (Bill) Marcum of McArthure, Ohio and Bobby (George) Marcum of Step-town, Ohio; 30 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and a special family pet, Cookie.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., on Monday, Sept. 8, 20003, at the Cornerstone Church in Breeden. Lonnie Smith and Danny Meade will officiate. Burial will follow in the Smith Cemetery in Kermit.

Visitation will be after 4 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 7, at the church with special services at beginning at 7 p.m.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home of Inez, Ky.

Alisha Justice

Alisha Justice, 19, of Hanover, W. Va., went to be with the Lord on Friday, Sept. 5, 2003, at the Memorial Division of CAMC in Charleston, W. Va.

Born April 22, 1984 at South Williamson, Ky, she was the daughter of Jimmy Darrell and Tammy Lester Justice of Hanover, W. Va.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Nathan and Lake Justice, and her maternal grandparents, Clyde and Redith Lester.

A nursing assistant at Rest Care, Inc. in Louisville, Ky., she was a member of the Justice Freewill Baptist Church, Justice, W. Va.

A Gilbert High School graduate of 2002, she was chosen Who's Who Among American High School Students, Gilbert High School band member for several years, Senior Attendant for 2002 Prom Court, among Top 10 of her graduating class, attended Liberty University of Lynchburg, VA and SWVTC-Wyoming Co. Campus.

Others survivors include her fiance, Jonathan Edwards of Matewan, W.Va; two sisters, Tiffany (Reco) Blankenship of Hanover, W. Va., and Amanda Justice at home; a niece, MaKayleigh Cheyenne Blank-enship of Hanover, W. Va.; and a special dog, Killer. She also leaves behind a host of aunts and uncles.

Friends may call at the Freedom Full Gospel Assembly House of Prayer, Hampden, W. Va., Tuesday evening, Sept. 9, 2003 from 6 until 11 p.m.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003 at the Freedom Full Gospel Assembly House of Prayer in Hamlin, W. Va. with Rev. Ronnie Lester, Rev. Carl "Cab" Wolford, Rev. Roger Endicott and Rev. Eddie Isom officiating.

Burial will follow in the Lester Family Cemetery at Joe Point, Hanover, W. Va.

Active pallbearers will be Trampus Browning, Preston Lilly, Joseph Lilly, Randy Johnson, Jeremy Perry, Nathan "Bub" Ellis, Wesley Riggs, Brandon Sammons, Chad Mullins and Chris Ward.

Visitation will be Tuesday at the church from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Mounts Funeral Home of Gilbert, W. Va., is in charge of arrangements.

Stephen Durand 'George' Durham
Stephen Durand "George" Durham, 38, of Baisden, W. Va., died Friday, Sept. 5, 2003, at Holden W. Va.

Born Dec. 13, 1964 in Ashland, Ky., he was the son of Arlene Hamrick of Gilbert, W. Va., and the late David F. Durham.

He was preceded in death by maternal grandparents Emory and Eunice Cline and paternal grandparents, Fredrick and Sarah Durham.

A coal miner, he was employed by Pine Creek Mining. He was a member of the Baisden Communi-ty Church of Baisden, W. Va.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include a stepmother, Reta Durham of Mt. Vernon, Ohio; lifetime partner, Barbara Cline of Baisden, W. Va.; a special daughter, Alyssa Cline of Baisden, W. Va.; one sister, Elaine (Michael) Miller of Man, W. Va.; three brothers, David Keith (Debby) Durham, Logan, W. Va.; Larry Todd (Rhonda) Hamrick, Gilbert, W. Va.; Robert O. (Wendi) Durham, Columbus, Ohio; four nephews, Greg Hurley, Kristopher Durham, Ezekial Durham and Austin Stacy; and one niece, Kailey Hamrick.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003 at the Baisden Community Church, Baisden, W. Va., with Rev. Clayton Cline, Rev. Kenny Pool and Rev. Billy Beheler officiating.

Burial will follow at the Rex Cline Family Cemetery at Baisden, W. Va.

Pallbearers will be Keith Dotson, Chadd Trent, Johnny Clay, Kent Robertson, Ed Steele, Justin Likens and Scott Fender.

Brian Gravely will serve as an honorary pallbearer.

Visitation was held on Monday at the funeral home from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Mary Kathleen Ball, 54, of Browning Fork section of Gilbert, WV, passed away Sunday, November 23, 2003 at her residence.
Born May 10, 1949 at Gilbert, WV, the daughter of the late Jesse Lee and Mary Louisa Hatfield Hatfield.
Ms. Ball was a homemaker and a member of the Browning Fork House of Faith at Browning Fork, WV.
She was preceded in death by 3 brothers; Moss, Joe and Jesse Lee Jr. Hatfield, 2 sisters; Betty Hatfield and Ethel Berry.
Survivors include her Ex-Husband; Johnny Ball of Pakersburg, WV, 4 sons; Jesse (Patty) Ball, Robert (Melissa), Christopher (Fiancee; Janice Morgan) Ball all of Gilbert, WV, Jonathan (Fiancee; Kelly Trent) Ball of Brenton, WV, 2 daughters; Marcie Hatfield of Parkersburg, WV, Johnna (Robby) Christian of Gilbert, WV, 15 grandchildren, 4 brothers; Arnold (Betty Ann) Hatfield, , Virgil (Donna Jean) Hatfield, Arvil (Rita) Hatfield and Layton (Ellen) Hatfield all of Gilbert, WV, 4 sisters; Emogene (Roby) Hatfield of Ripley, WV, Juanita (Rush) Carter of Gilbert, WV, Izetta (Douglas) Collins of Gilbert, WV, Minnie (Bennett) Morgan of North Spring, WV.

Funeral services were conducted at the church Wednesday, November 26, 2003 at 1 p.m. with the Revs. Diamond Cater and Denny May officiating.
Burial followed at the Carter Cemetery at Browning Fork, WV. Family and friends served as pallbearers.

William P. 'Billy' Birchfield
William P. "Billy" Birchfield, 37, of Madison, W. Va., died September 17, 2003, in an accident at Progress Coal Company.

Funeral service will be held at noon Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003, at Handley Funeral Home, Danville, W. Va.

Burial will follow at Memory Gardens, Madison, W. Va.

Friends may call 6-9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Rev. Gordon William Stacy Robinson
July 7, 1924 - 11/25/2003

Reverend Gordon William Stacy Robinson of Gilbert, West Virginia, died Tuesday, November 25, 2003 at Saint Mary's Hospital in Huntington, West Virginia after a brief illness. Rev. Robinson was born on July 7, 1924 in Vansant, Virginia. The following family members survive him: his wife, Ruby Jean Dean Robinson; a daughter, Karen Faye Browning (husband, Michael) of Gilbert; two sons, Michael David Robinson (wife, Carmella Fran) of Richmond, Virginia; and Charles Steven Robinson, Sr., (wife, Carolyn) of Charleston, West Virginia; and five grandchildren: Ashley Nicole Browning, Brandon Kyle Robinson, Christopher Michael Stacy Robinson, and Whitney Morgan Robinson. Rev. Robinson has five living siblings: Melavie Cline of Verner, Joann Sowders and Zola Mae Toler of Palestine, Buddy Robinson of Milton, and Rosa Dean of Gilbert. He is preceded in death by his son, Brian Kevin Robinson, a granddaughter, Mallory Ryan Robinson, a brother, Lee Robinson, and a sister, Ruby Stevens.

Rev. Robinson was an ordained member of the Ministers' Conference of The West Virginia State Association of Free Will Baptists and served as pastor and evangelist in several area churches in Logan and Mingo counties for fifty-three years. Rev. Robinson lived an exemplary life, a well-respected man of faith, who was honored to serve his community in the ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ. His faith was most evident in all aspects of his life. He was a member of the Riverview Free Will Baptist Church and served as a former pastor of the Church. Gordon and his wife, Ruby, celebrated fifty-five years of marriage on June 5, 2003. In his final hours, he gave thanks for the blessed life they shared together and for his children and grandchildren, who together with his faith were his life.

Gordon Robinson was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans. He served as a Technical Sergeant of Company L 19th Infantry of the Army of the United States. As a veteran of World War II, he received the following decorations and citations: Good Conduct Medal of Honor, World War II Victory Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, the Purple Heart, and the Combat INE Badge Marksman M1.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 28, at Mounts Funeral Chapel in Gilbert, West Virginia with Rev. Carl Vallance of Huntington, West Virginia officiating. Visitation will be accommodated on Thursday, November 27, between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. at the Chapel. Rev. Daniel Dean and Rev. Michael Browning will be assisting with the services. Jackie Mounts and Doug Lester will provide music. Pallbearers will be: Tom White, Dick White, Michael Browning, Chris Robinson, Clyde Endicott, and Greg Dean. Buck Harless, Rev. Norman Vance, Rev. Forrest Franklin, Rev. Clarence Fortner, Howard Montgomery, Ralph Hendricks, Gorey Davis, Dexter Cline, Enos Blankenship, and the sons of Saul (Buster) Dean will serve as honorary pallbearers. Graveside services will follow at the Hollywood Cemetery in Gilbert, West Virginia under the direction of Rev. Daniel Dean.
