Jeffery Gibson

Jeffery Scott Gibson, 34, of Bruno, W. Va., died Jan. 4, 2004, at his residence.

Born Jan. 19, 1969, at Man, W. Va., he was the son of Anna Faye Johnson of Bruno and the late Jimmy Gibson.

In addition to his father, Jefferey was preceded in death by one brother, Jimmy Gibson Jr.; one sister, Melissa Tonya Gibson; his maternal grandparents, Raymond and Fanny Johnson and paternal grandparents, Alonzo and Emma Gibson.

He was of the Church of God faith.

Jefferey is survived by his mother, Anna Faye Gibson, of Bruno; three brothers, Michael Gibson and Raymond "Bub" (Debbie) Gibson, both of Bruno and Kenneth Gibson of Maryville, Tenn.; one niece, Kristie Gibson of Bruno; one special niece, "My Baby" Halee Gibson of Bruno; two nephews, Mark and Kory Gibson, both of Neighbort, W. Va.; a very special friend, Rick Collins of Bruno; and special aunts and uncle, James and Betty Burgess and Audrey Gibson.

A memorial service will be held at 8 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at the Bruno Church of God with the Rev. Roger Frye officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Mounts Funeral Home, Gilbert.

Donna Hatfield

Donna Sue Hatfield, 70, of Varney, W. Va., died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital, South Williamson, Ky.

She was born April 20, 1933, a daughter of the late Edward E. and Ruby Holbrook Webb.

A homemaker, Donna was of the Church of God faith.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years and caretaker, Valentine T. "V.T." Hatfield of Varney; one son, Stanley Grant (Beverly Kennedy) Hatfield of Sebastian, Fla., who was the apple of her eye; two grandchildren, Edward Webb (Erin E. Craig) Hatfield of Sanger, Texas and Eric Valentine "V.T." Hatfield of Sebastian, whom she cherished beyond words; a special aunt, Blanche Holbrook Moore of Catlettsburg, Ky.; a special cousin, Phyllis Withrow of Catlettsburg; a special lifetime friend, Ruie Hatfield of Varney; a wonderful caretaker and niece and nephew, Connie and Bernie Kennedy of Varney; another special caretaker, Julie Crabtree and her best companion, Joshy Dogg.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at the Hatfield Funeral Chapel, Toler, Ky., with Rev. Bill Snodgrass officiating.

Burial will follow in the Forest Lawn Cemetery at Peck's Mill, W. Va.

Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dignity Hospice of Southern West Virginia, P.O. Box 4304 Chapmanville, W. Va. 25008.

She will be sadly missed and remembered by many close friends and relatives.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel.

Thelma Hefner

Thelma Hefner, 92, of Williamson, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at Heritage Center, Huntington, W. Va.

Born, Jan. 9, 1911, in Williamson, Thelma was a daughter of the late Arthur and Luella Mae Myers Williams.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, H.V. Hefner, one brother, A.E. O'Neil and two sisters, Ethel O'Neil and Dorothy Vaughn.

Thelma was a member of the First United Methodist Church for nearly 80 years, having received her 75-year pin in 2000. She was a former Sunday School teacher, member of the choir and Methodist Women.

She is survived by a son, Robert (Dixie) Hefner of Williamsburg, Va.; two daughters, Betty (Chuck) Sullivan of Huntington and Becky Grimmett of Williamson; one sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Robert Wylie of Tucson, Ariz.; six grandchildren, John Hefner of Roanoke, Va.; Bill Hefner of Bostic, NC; Karen Grimmett of Orlando, Fla.; Stephen Grimmett of Williamson; Laura Sullivan Riegel of St. Peters, MO, and Erin Sullivan of Huntington and five great-grandchildren, Krystal, Lauren, Sarah and Virginia Hefner and Haley Grimmett.

Graveside services are scheduled for 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at the Fairview Cemetery, Williamson, with Rev. Greg Blair officiating.

Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery.

Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the time of service Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at Weaver Mortuary, West Williamson.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimers Association, 111 Lee Street East, Charleston, WV 25301.

Arrangements are under the direction of Weaver Mortuary.

Janet Howard

Janet Street Howard, 38, formerly of Lenore, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at her home near Nashville, Tenn., following a lengthy illness.

Born Jan. 28, 1965, she was a daughter of Rev. Tommy and Jeanette Street of Dickson, Tenn.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Bart Howard; two brothers, Joel Street of Charlotte, Tenn. and Jonathan Street of McEwen, Tenn.; one sister, Joni Sensing Thompson of Dickson and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at Taylor Funeral Home with her father, Rev. Tommy Street officiating.

Entombment will be held privately at Dickson Memorial Gardens.

In accordance to her wishes, Janet requested that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Dickson County Humane Society, 410 Eno Road, Dickson, TN, 37055.

Arrangements directed by Chafin Funeral Home.

Eva Layne

Eva Salmons Layne, 59, of Blackberry City, W. Va., passed away Thursday, January 15, 2004, at South Williamson ARH.

Born July 14, 1944, in Surosa, W. Va. to the late Pearl Salmons Sr. and Lora Vance Salmons, she was a member of the Eastern Star. She had worked for Matewan Lumber Company and Superior Electric and was a homemaker.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, James Nile Salmons; and brothers-in-law, C.H. Salmons and Boyd Syck.

Surviving are her husband, Starling Layne of Blackberry City, W. Va.; son, Matthew James Layne (Bridgette) of Owenton, Ky.; step-sons, James Eugene Layne of Statesville, N.C., Gordon Lorenzo Layne of Denver, N.C. and Charles Joseph Layne of Lake Cataba, N.C.; brothers, Pearl Salmons Jr. (Allene) and David R. Salmons (Jean), both of Baltimore, Md.; sisters, Bertha Salmons of Richmond, Ky., Patricia Syck of Rawl, W. Va., Dollie Taylor (Prentice) of Alabama, Alice Cook (Calvin) of Beech Creek, W. Va., Rosie Hatfield (Doug) of Varney, W. Va., Patsy Westergrin (Dick) of Michigan City, Ind., Jeanette Simpkins (Jim) of Red Jacket, W. Va. and Sharon Kay Estepp (Norville) of White Pine, Tenn.; special friends, Geneva and Jack Steele of Meador, W. Va.; one grandchild, Telena Dawn Steele.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 18, 2004, 12 noon, at Chambers Funeral Services' Chapel with Rev. Gene Clemmons officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain View Memory Gardens at Maher, W. Va. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will begin Friday, January 16, 2004, from 6 - 9 p.m., at the funeral home chapel.

Arrangements are under the direction of Chambers Funeral Services, Inc. of Matewan, W. Va.

Virginia Chapman

Virginia L. Chapman, 83, of Maple Walk, Williamson, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, Jan. 23. 2004.

She was native of Mingo County and was the daughter of the late Walter Grey and Bash Parsley Chapman of Naugatuck. She was of the Baptist faith. Virginia was a retired school teacher.

She began her career at the Little Dove School, where she worked with her sister, June, and brother, Jack. After many years of teaching in Mingo and Logan counties, Virginia accepted a consultant position with Holt, Rinehart and Winston Publishing in New York City, N.Y.

She traveled extensively, but never forgot her "Laurel Creek" roots. She even persuaded Holt to include Trace Creek in their reading series. In the mid 1960s, Virginia settled in Emporia, Va., where she developed the kindergarten program for the state of Virginia. The last years of her career were spent as the reading supervisor for Martinsville, Va., schools.

Virginia was also a member of several educational honor societies including Who's Who Among Ameri-can Women, Who's Who Among Child Development Professionals, Delta Kappa Gamma and Kappa Delta Pi.

"Aunt Gin, " as she was affectionately known, was a champion of education. A lifetime learner, Aunt Gin attended at least seven different universities and could always be found in her favorite chair reading, writing or completing a crossword puzzle.

Aunt Gin was also passionately devoted to her nieces and nephews. She passed her deep passion for learning to them, instilling a sense of pride and accomplishment in each and every one. It was never uncommon to go to Aunt Gin's house and be bombarded with word puzzles or a myriad of topics for debate. Debating aside, it was also not uncommon to hear Aunt Gin singing praises for the accomplishments of here nieces and nephews, whom she loved as if they were her own.

Aunt Gin left a legacy that will continue for generations to come. Her sense of style, humor and compassion lives in every person she came in contact with. She will be deeply and sadly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Jack Chapman; and sisters June C. Maynard and Betty C. Stevens.

She is survived by brothers, Joe A. Chapman of Phenix City, Ala., and Walter Grey Chapman of Lessage; sisters Kathleen C. Hatfield of Delbarton and Barbara C. Jordan of Anderson, S.C.; and a host of nieces and nephews. Virginia also had four wonderful caregivers, Geraldine Hunt, Rhoda Hall, Sandra Mullins and Lida Davis.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at the Weaver Mor-tuary in West Williamson with the Rev. Jimmy May-nard officiating. Entomb-ment will be in the Mountain View Memory Gardens in Maher.

Pallbearers will be Pete Swain, George Walter Smith Sr., George Walter Smith Jr., Mark Jordan, Chuck Eu-banks, Ed Palmeter and Chad Slater.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Monday, Jan. 28, at the mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Williamson Public Library.

Gus Britt

Gus Britt, 70, of Hanover, W. Va., died on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at the Mounts Funeral Home chapel in Gilbert with the Revs. James Cline, Ronnie Lester and Sammy Lester officiating. Burial will follow in the Dexter-Morgan Cemetery in Hanover, W. Va., with graveside rites being conducted by the Masonic Lodge #148 of Iaeger, W. Va.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Monday, Jan. 26, at the funeral home.

Howard Gore

Howard Gore, 84, of Dingess died on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, at the Logan Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at the East Fork Church of God. Burial will follow in the Gore Cemetery at East Fork of Dingess.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m., Monday, Jan. 26, at the church.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the James Funeral Home in Logan, W. Va.

Madge Hatfield

Madge Charles Hatfield of Lockbourn, Ohio, passed away Sunday, Jan. 27, 2004, at her residence.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at the Union Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel at 3349 Olentangy River Road.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Central Ohio, 3380 Tremont Road, Columbus, Ohio, 43221.

Inez G. Rayburn

Inez G. Rayburn, 86, of Edgarton, W. Va., died Monday Jan. 5, 2004, in the Appalachian Regional Hospital at South Williamson, Ky.

Born April 6, 1917 in Pikeville, Ky., she was a daughter of the late James S. Griffith and Ida Williams Griffith.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Rayburn Jr.; two brothers, Ivan and Donald Rayburn and a sister Gladys.

She was a chartered member of the Delorme Bible Church at Edgarton, W. Va. She was retired from the Pike County Board of Education having worked for 42 years.

She is survived by sons, James E. Rayburn (Dianna) of Coal City, W. Va., Charles T. Rayburn (Mary E.) of Majestic-Cedar, Ky.; brothers, Thomas Griffith of Peach Tree City, Georgia and Hubert Griffith of Wichita Falls, Texas; eight grandchildren, James E., Charles T. Jr., Lance, Christopher, Dewey, Felicia, Inez Renee' and Heather; 11 great-great grandchildren; and she is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at Chambers Funeral Services Chapel, Matewan, with the Rev. Hiram Justice officiating. Burial will follow in the Buddy Mounts Cemetery at Majestic-Cedar, Ky.

Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will begin Tuesday Jan. 6, 2004, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the chapel.

Arrangements are under the direction of Chambers Funeral Services Inc., of Matewan, W. Va.
