Bertha Ray

Bertha Ray, 83, of Varney, W. Va., formerly of Taylorville, W. Va., went to be with the Lord January 8, 2004, at Varney, W. Va.

She was born September 22, 1920 at Newtown, W. Va. She was the daughter of the late Dexter and Rebecca Ratliff.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, John L. Ray, and one son, Gary Ray and two brothers, and two sisters.

Her survivors include two sons, John L. Ray Jr. of Taylorville, W. Va. and Roger L. Ray and wife Patsy of Varney, W. Va., with whom she made her home with; three daughters, Joann Mounts and husband Alton of Varney, W. Va., Patty Hinkle and husband Albert of Taylorville, W. Va. and Reba Maynard and husband Thurman of Red Jacket, W. Va.; 13 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Chafin Funeral Home Chapel, Saturday morning at 11 a.m., January 10, 2004 with Pastor Danny Ward officiating. Burial will follow in the Ray Cemetery at Taylorville, W. Va.

Visitation will be at the funeral home from 6 - 9 p.m. Friday evening.

Chafin Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

William Maynard

William Fonzo "Bill" Maynard, 64, of Delbarton passed away on Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at the Appalachian Regional Hospital in South Williamson, Ky.

He was born on Nov. 23, 1939, in Puritan Mines, W. Va., a son of the late Tennis and Anna Ruth Brown Maynard Sr. He was a retired coal miner having worked for Kermit Coal Co. He was of the Church of God faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Emza "Tadpole" Maynard; one still born son; two brothers, George Maynard and Tennis Maynard Jr.; and two sisters, Marcella Perry and Betty Kay Maynard.

Mr. Maynard is survived by his wife, Edna Curry Maynard of Delbarton; three sons, Stanley Maynard of Gilbert, George Maynard of Lenore and Jerry Maynard of Delbarton; one brother, Melvin Maynard of Delbarton; two sisters, Jean Jude of Williamson and Ruth Daughtery of Delbarton; eight grandchildren, Daniel Lee, Stanley David, Joshua Glen, Savannah Lorraine, Emza Lee, Zachary Nathan, Angel Nicole and Adrianna Lashae; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at the Chafin Funeral Home Chapel in Delbarton with the Rev. Glen Merritt officiating. Burial will follow in the Maynard Cemetery at Puritan Mines.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Monday, Jan. 19, at the funeral home.

Elijah Hensley Jr.

Elijah "Bud" Hensley, Jr., 78, of Naugatuck, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at his residence.

Mr. Hensley was born Dec. 3, 1925, in Martin County, Ky., a son of the late Elijah and Rosa Moore Hensley, Sr.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Waburn Hensley.

A retired UMWA miner, he was a member of the Church of God, the UMWA and a World War II veteran.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Dorothy Newsome Hensley; one son, Donald (Linda) Hensley of Belo; two daughters, Virginia (Raymond) Davis and Judy C. Dulin, both of Columbus, Ohio; one sister, Mary Jane Bailey of Columbus, Ohio; six grandchildren, Sheila, Michael and Matthew Dulin, Kyra McDonald, Querida Messer and Kevin Davis; 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at Weaver Mortuary with Revs. Kenny Gore, Albert Newsome and Lonnie Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Newsome Family Cemetery at Naugatuck.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call from 6 until 9 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at the mortuary.

Weaver Mortuary of West Williamson is in charge of arrangements.

Roy Evans

Roy Edgar Evans, 72, of Crum, W. Va., passed away Wednesday, January 28, 2004, at his residence.

Born July 10, 1931, in West Virginia, to the late John Smith Evans and Sadie Romans Evans, he was a coal miner with Wolf Creek Colleirs. Mr. Evans was a member of Silver Creek United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Edith Blackburn Evans; son, Charles Ray and Juanita Evans, of Hode, Ky.; daughters, Joann and Norman Daniels of Naugatuck, W. Va., Carol Jean Evans of Savannah, Ga. and Brenda Gale Evans of Kermit, W. Va.; brother and sisters, Edsel Evans of Newva, Iowa; Anna Dalton of Trenton, Ky. and Marie Short of Batavia, Ohio; four grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, January 30, 2004, 2 p.m., at Richmond-Callaham, Warfield Chapel with Otis Dillon and Roy Fluty officiating. Burial will follow at Webb Cemetery, Webb, W. Va.

Visitation will be held after 6 p.m. Thursday at the Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home, Warfield, Ky.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home, Inez, Ky.

Irene Goodman

Irene Goodman, 62, of Williamson, W. Va., passed away Friday morning, January 9, 2004, in Cabell Huntington Hospital, Huntington, W. Va.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Rogers Funeral Home, Belfry, Ky.

Mary M. Hatfield
Mary M. Hatfield, 85, of Double Camp, Newtown, W. Va., was called home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at the Appalachian Regional Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility.

Born Oct. 4, 1918, at Sprigg, W. Va., she was the daughter of the late James Calvin McCoy and Elizabeth Castle McCoy.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Sid Hatfield; three brothers; and two sisters.

A homemaker, she was a member of the Matewan Assembly of God.

She is survived by a son, Sid M. Hatfield of Athens, W. Va.; four daughters, Parlea (Ted) Backus of Huntington, W. Va., Peggy (Ron) Martz of Cape Coral, Fla., Alice Jo (Ed) Chapman of Clinton, Md., and Elizabeth (Butch) Jones of Ruther Glen, Va.; a brother, Paul McCoy of Indianapolis, Ind.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Wednes-day, Jan. 21, 2004, at Hatfield Funeral Chapel with Rev. Buddy Kendrick officiating. Interment will follow at the Hatfield Cemetery, Double Camp, Newtown, W. Va.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of service Wednesday at the funeral home.

Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler, Ky. has assisted the family with arrangements.

Betty Jo Dodrill
Betty Jo Dodrill, 77, of 2011 New Hope Rd., Princeton, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at Princeton Community Hospital.

Born July 18, 1926 in Frametown, W. Va., she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Myrtle Pierson Wolfe.

Mrs. Dodrill served more than 30 years as a volunteer at Princeton Community Hospital and formerly worked as a classified advertising clerk at the Charleston Daily Mail. She was very active in Boy Scouts of America where she was a former den mother.

She was a faithful member of Princeton Presbyterian Church where she was formerly active in the Women of the Church.

She was a graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School in Charleston. She had been a resident of Princeton since 1956, moving here from Proctorville, Ohio.

In addition to her parents, her husband William L. Dodrill preceded her in death.

Mrs. Dodrill is survived by one son, W. Brent Dodrill and his wife, Gay Lynn of Morgantown; one daughter, Marsha Hale and her husband, Bob, of Toler, Ky.; six grandchildren, Ryan and Logan Dodrill, Matthew and Kelly Hale, Matthew Smith and Lucas Terry; one brother, Robert Wolfe and his wife, Wanda, of Charleston, and a special friend and caregiver, Brenda Neal of Princeton.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, at the George W. Seaver Chapel of Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton with Rev. Ed Pettus officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 11:00 a.m. until the service hour Wednesday.

Memorial contributions may be made to Princeton Presbyterian Church, 1809 W. Main St., Princeton, W. Va. 24740.

Joann Browning

Joann Brooks Browning, 56, of Verner, W. Va., died on Friday, Feb. 27, 2004, at the Logan (W. Va.) Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Tuesday, March 3, 2004, at the Tarncliffe Tabernacle Church with the Revs. Clarence Fortner and Lonnie Blankenship officiating. Burial will follow in the Leatherwood Memorial Cemetery in Justice.

Friends and family may call at the church from 6 p.m. until midnight on Monday, March 1..

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Mounts Funeral Home of Gilbert.

Ronald Lester

Ronald Lester, 55, of Center Road, Blue Rock, Ohio, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2004, at his residence. He was formerly of Baisden.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Monday, March 1, 2004, at the Mounts Funeral Home in Gilbert with the Rev. Patty Morgan officiating. Burial will follow in the Thompson Family Cemetery in Baisden.

Jerry Mahon Jr.

Jerry Lee Mahon, Jr., 28, formerly of Wilkesville, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly March 3, 2004, at Tri City Medical Center in San Diego, Cal.

Lee, as he was know to all who knew him and loved him, was born February 20, 1976 at Holzer's Hospital in Gallipolis, Ohio. He was a 1994 graduate of Vinton County High School. After completing high school, Lee made his career choice with the U.S. Navy and settled to live his too short life in Oceanside, Cal. After completing his time with the Navy, Lee focused his attention on nursing and was in the midst of completing his RN degree.

He is survived by his parents, Jerry Lee Mahon, Sr., and Elsie Karen (Brumfield) Mahon, both of Wilkesville, Ohio; a younger brother, Walter Charles Mahon of Wilkesville; a younger sister, Samantha Alene Mahon (Spank) both of Wilkesville; his grandparents, Charles Herbert and Goldie Alene Mahon of Ragland, W. Va.; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Walter and Rebecca Evans Brumfield; and an uncle, George Brumfield; and an aunt, Fay Shields.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at the Sardis Old Regular Baptist Church in Delbarton, W. Va., at 1 p.m., with the Elders Billy Brumfield and Brian Dillon. Burial will follow in the Evans Cemetery at Delbarton, W. Va. Arrangements are under the direction of Garrett Funeral Home in McArthur, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the family to help with the funeral cost.

Frank Wood

Mr. Frank A. Wood, 79 of Huntington, formerly of Matewan, W. Va., went home to be with the Lord, March 9, 2004.

Funeral services will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Friday March 12, 2004 at Chapman's Mortuary, with Dr. Terrell Bradley officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Memorial Park, Huntington.

He was born March 29, 1924 at Lerona, W. Va., a son of the late Maynard and Lola Kirk Wood.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Dorothy West Wood; a daughter, Carol Husk of Barboursville, W. Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, Eddie and Delores Wood of Huntington; 3 grandchildren, Jason Wood, Jennifer Cyrus and husband Jason all of Huntington, Larry Husk and wife Darlene of Culloden, W. Va.; 2 great grandsons, Seth Husk and Joshua Cyrus; a brother and sister-in-law, James E. and Lorena Wood of Lerona, W. Va.; a sister and brother-in-law, Ruby Helen and David Barboza of Lexington, S.C.; a special sister-in-law, Sylvia Bailey of Pikeville, Ky.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was a veteran serving with the US Army during WW II, and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Highlawn Baptist Church.

Men from the church will serve as pallbearers. Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday March 11, 2004 at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, W. Va.

Graydon Hamilton
Graydon Hamilton, 93, of Blackberry City died on Friday, March 19, 2004, at the Williamson Memorial Hospital.

He was born on April 22, 1910, in Buskirk, Ky., a son of the late William and Nancy Elizabeth Sparkman Hamilton. He was a member of the Sprigg Freewill Baptist Church.

Mr. Halmilton was merchant for numerous years, a barber for 60 years, a school bus driver for 17 years, postmaster for 31 years and the last living graduate of the first class of Matewan High School.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Nannie Hughes, Sara Ratcliff, Melda Ward, Flora Fisher, Dollie Simpkins, Billie "Corsie" Manley, Cora Hamilton and Josephine Smith; and brothers John Hamilton and Robert "Bob" Hamilton.

He is survived by his wife, Francis Oakes Hamilton; sons, David Alexander Hamilton of Dunbar, W. Va., and Daniel "Danny" Graydon (Janet Sue) Hamilton of Sprigg; dauthers, Nancy (Kurt) Franck of Louisville, Ky., and Susan (Rodney) Stewart of Ransom, Ky.; a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mr. Hamilton will be conducted at 1 p.m., Monday, March 22, 2004, at the Chambers Funeral Serives chapel in Matewan with the Revs. Franklin Mounts and Allen Shouse officiating. Burial will follow in the Buskirk Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Greg Stewart, Marvin Bench, Rodney Stewart, Danny Chapman, Daniel Hamilton and John Breaut.

Visitation will be Sunday, March 21, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Juanita Collins
Juanita Collins, 62, of Rockwood, Mich., a native of Ragland, died on Thursday, March 19, 2004, at the Saint Vincents Mercy Hopsital in Toledo, Ohio, following a lingering illness.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 23, at the Ford Chapel Allore Martenson Funeral Home in Rockwood with Pastor David Miles of the First Baptist Church of Flat Rock, Mich., officiating.
