Lee Scott

Lee Scott, 86, of Norwich, Conn., husband of the late Mary (Montgomery) Scott, of 78 Westwood Park, Norwich, died May 26, 2004, at Norwichtown Rehabilitation Center.

Born in Rawl, W. Va., on August 11, 1917, he was the son of the late Grover and Jessie (Cunningham) Scott.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a custodian at the Norwich Elks Home.

On January 6, 1945 in Nolan, W. Va., he was united in marriage to Mary (Montgomery) Scott who died September 5, 2002.

Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law Charles and Ellen Scott of Norwich; two grandchildren, Gina and her husband Sean Riordan, and Kerry Scott; one great grandchild, Chelsea Riordan; and several nieces and nephews.

Labenski Funeral assisted with private arrangements.

David Evans

Mr. David Ray Evans, age 55, of Abingdon, Va., formerly of Belfry, Ky., passed away July 16, 2004, at 12:45 p.m., in Johnston Memorial Hospital following a short illness.

David was born on April 19, 1949, in Grundy, Va., to the late Minister Eugene Evans and Nora Matney Evans.

He attended Sharondale Grade School and was a graduate of Belfry High School. He was a disabled coal miner with a mining career of over 30 years which included Eastern Coal Company of Stone, Ky., Clinchfield Coal Company, Lebanon, Va., Sidney Coal Company, Sidney, Ky., before becoming disabled.

Survivors include:

David was a loving husband for 36 years to his wife, Patsy Ann (Pecco) Evans. A father to three wonderful children, Candy Renee' Jones, Paul David Evans and Heather Cecile Evans, all of Abingdon, Va.; a loving grandfather to three wonderful grandkids, Kara Evans of Castlewood, Va., Scott Thomas and Aundrea Jones, both of Abingdon, Va.; brothers, Donald (Helen) Evans of Abingdon, Va., Clinton (Debbie) Evans of Grundy, Va.; sisters, Reba Rasnake of Claypool Hill, Va., Eleanor (Zed) Ball of Rosedale, Va., Elizabeth (Lynn) Blevins of Bristol, Va. He is the son-in-law of Jonah and Mabel Varney of Belfry, Ky.; a loving brother-in-law, J.T. Varney of Belfry, Ky.; sisters-in-law, Tolena (Steve) Trout of Kodak, Tenn., Tammy Varney of Belfry, Ky., Pam Varney of Kodak, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews whom he loved and they loved him.

Visitation services were conducted Sunday, July 18, 2004 from 5 - 9 p.m. at the Painter Creek Church of Christ on Route 75 near the Virginia/Tennessee State Line, Abingdon, Va. with church services from 6 - 7 p.m. with Minister Richard Gaminde.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, July 19, 2004, at 1 p.m. at the Painter Creek Church of Christ on Route 75. Burial followed at the Mountain View United Methodist Church cemetery. The family received friends at their residence at 23056 Leaward Lane, Abingdon, Va.

Pallbearers were Brandon Evans, Jeremy Evans, Bruce Olivo, Donald Evans, Jr., John Brown, Lynn Blevins, Scott Crum, Gary Fields and Ryan Stiltner. Honorary pallbearers were Harold Mitchell, J.T. Varney, Steve Trout, Tom Pecco, Jr., Brian Slone, Jim Lewis, Donald Evans, Clinton Evans and Ben Goad.

In lieu of flowers, make donations to the Painter Creek Church of Christ in memory of David Evans.

Farris Funeral Service, 427 East Main Street, Abingdon, Va., is serving the Evans family.

Thomas Booth, Sr.

Thomas Lee Booth, Sr., 83 years old, died Monday, July 19, 2004, at Rolling Hills Nursing Home, New Albany, Ind. He was formerly of West Virginia.

Mr. Booth was a member of Hamburg Church of Christ in Sellersburg, Ind., a Navy veteran of World War II, a Kentucky Colonel; and a retired manager from the A&P Tea Company.

Surviving are his two sons, Thomas L. Booth, Jr., of Sellersburg, Ind. and William R. Booth of Sellersburg, Ind.; two brothers, Clyde Booth of Mesquite, Tex. and Ron Booth of Tucson, Ariz.; one sister, Ada Roberts of Parkersburg, W. Va.; three grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

The body has been cremated.

A memorial service will be at Hamburg Church of Christ on Saturday at 3 p.m. The cremains will be buried at Mountain View Memorial Gardens in Williamson, W. Va.

Garr Funeral Home in Sellersburg is in charge of arrangements.

Loretta Sherry

Loretta Sherry, 57, passed away Sunday, July 18, 2004, at Columbus Health Care Center, Columbus, Ohio.

She was a retired nurse, serving 20 years at Mount Carmel Medical Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Sherry and son, Robert Hayes.

Surviving are her children, Connie (Hayes) Whitehead of Williamson, W. Va.; Wayne Hayes and Stacy Hayes, both of Columbus, Ohio; father to Loretta's children, Frank Risley; 11 grandchildren; and one great grandson; 23 brothers and sisters; several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call Jerry Spears Funeral Home, 2693 W. Broad St., Tuesday, 5-8 p.m. where service will be held Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. Interment is at Sunset cemetery.

Everett Fields, Sr.
Everett Ronnie Fields, Sr., 59, of Airport Bottom, Delbarton, passed away Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at Charleston Area Medical Center's General Division following a long illness.

He was born Aug. 4, 1944, in Delbarton, a son of Dorothy Fields of Delbarton and the late Tommy Fields.

He was a former supermarket manager.

In addition to his father, he was also preceded in death by one son, Terry Michael Fields; one daughter, Tina Marie Fields; one brother, Edward Fields; sister-in-law, Barbara Fields.

Additional survivors include his wife of 39 years, Sue Fields; one son, Everett (Terri) Fields, Jr., of Delbarton; three daughters, Becky (Clyde) Pruitt of Delbartton, Shirley Ann Fields of South Beloit, IL, and Mary Beth Fields of Delbarton; one brother, Roger Fields of Delbarton; three sisters, Athelean Lucurelli of Long Island, NY, Shirley Fields of Delbarton, and Thelma Browning of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren, Amanda Sue and Clyde III Pruitt of Delbarton, and Janice Marie Hayes of South Beloit, IL.; special friend and sister-in-law, Ann Northup of Crown City, Ohio.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 31, 2004, at Chafin Funeral Home with the Rev. Hal Hevenor officiating.

Burial will follow at the Fields Family cemetery at Pie.

Pallbearers will be Everett Fields, Jr., Clyde Pruitt, Jr., Eddie Fields, Roland Martin, Burton Murphy, and Jamie Murphy.

Honorary pallbearer will be Jamie Fields.

Friends may call from 6 until 9 p.m. Friday, July 30, 2004, at Chafin Funeral Home in Delbarton.

Ervin Rife
Funeral arrangements are incomplete for Ervin Rife, 77, of Gilbert, who died July 28, 2004, at his residence following a long illness.

Fanning Funeral Home in Iaeger is assisting the Rife family.

Jimmie Talbert
Jimmie Talbert, of Matewan, passed away Tuesday, August 31, 2004, at his home.

Visitation will be Thursday, September 2, 2004, at the chapel from 6 - 9 p.m. All other arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Arrangements are under the direction of Chambers Funeral Services, Inc. of Matewan, W. Va.

Shirley Cline
Shirley Marie Cline, 67, of Baisden, W. Va., passed away Monday, August 30, 2004, at her residence in Baisden, W. Va.

Born February 3, 1937, in Wharncliffe, W. Va., to the late Frank and Laura Lester Patrick, was a member of First Missionary Baptist Church at Justice, W. Va., with Pastor Jim Nagy.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jason Cline; one son, Jason Michael Cline; and two brothers, Franklin Patrick and Johnny Patrick.

Surviving are her son, Franklin Cline of Baisden, W. Va.; two grandchildren, Michelle Cline of Wytheville, Va. and Adrien Marie Atkins of Lima, Ohio; two sisters, Zella Thacker of Johnstown, Ohio and Helen and husband (Dennis) Mounts of Speedwell, Tenn.; daughter-in-law, Genive Cline of Baisden, W. Va.; and special friend, Mary Ann Beasley of Union, W. Va.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 2, 2004, 11 a.m., at First Missionary Baptist Church at Justice, W. Va. with Rev. Jim Nagy officiating. Burial will follow at Floyd Cline cemetery at Right Hand Fork of Baisden, W. Va.

Friends may call the First Missionary Baptist Church at Justice, W. Va., Wednesday evening from 6 - 9 p.m.

Mounts Funeral Home of Gilbert, W. Va., is in charge of arrangements.

Rosie Martin
Mrs. Rosie Lee Runyon Martin, 60, a resident of Roy Farlow Rd., Sophia, N.C., entered into eternal rest Monday, August 30, 2004, at her residence.

Mrs. Martin was born in Ransom, Ky., June 27, 1944, a daughter of Ernest B. and Stella Smith Runyon. She was a homemaker and of the Primitive Baptist faith. Rosie was a kind and loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her son, Woodrow Thomas "Tommy" Collins II; four brothers, Paul, Bud, Eddie and Orson Runyon; and a sister, Juanita Little.

Surviving are her husband of 32 years, Alton J. Martin of the home; a daughter, Shannon Gunter Baker and her husband Billy of Thomasville, N.C.; a son, Larry Collins and his wife Charlotte of High Point, N.C.; four sisters, Patsy Bunn and her husband Jim of Greensboro, N.C., Birdie Coleman, Annie Dotson and Ernestine Hatfield and husband Everette, all of Ransom, Ky.; five brothers, Charles Runyon and wife Pat of Thomasville, N.C., Mack Runyon and wife Phyllis of Archdale, N.C., Tom Runyon and wife Eleanor and Danny Runyon and wife Sheila, both of Pikeville, Ky., Hassell Runyon and wife Evelyn of Delray Beach, Fla.; and four grandchildren, Nicholas Collins, Jessica Grissett, Skylar Baker and Marie Baker.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Davis Funerals & Cremations Chapel, 976 Phillips Ave., High Point, by the Rev. Johnny Hellard and Rev. Danny Runyon. Burial will follow in Guilford Memorial Park cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 until 9 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the Center of Living, Home Health & Hospice, P.O. Box 9, Asheboro, NC 28204.

Clara M. McCowan
Clara Marie McCowan, 77, of Ragland, W. Va., died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, at her residence.

She was born May 18, 1927, at McAndrews, Ky., the daughter of the late Mike and Clara Vary.

She was also preceded in death by two sons, Harry Truman and William McCowan; one brother, Joe Vary; three sisters, Helen, Pauline and Irene.

Mrs. McCowan was retired from the Mingo County Board of Education. She was a member of the Rockhouse Freewill Baptist Church and chaplain of DAV Chapter No. 141 of Belfry Womens Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband, Earl "Red" McCowan; two sons, Robert Larry McCowan of Delbarton, W. Va. and Earl Jimmie (Debbie) McCowan of Beauford, SC; one daughter, Annette (Mike) Marcum of Taylorville, W. Va.; two sisters, Virginia (Tan) Marcum of McAndrews, Ky. and Violet (James) Schrewsbury of Stuart, Fla.; special great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Mullins; special granddaughter, Dawn Mullins; six grandchildren, Kristie Hyche, Todd McCowan, William Dunbar, Justin O'Brien, Gary Michael Marcum and Shawne Wells; nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at Rogers Funeral Home in Belfry, Ky. with minister Lyle Marcum officiating. Burial will follow in Lenore Memorial Gardens at Lenore, W. Va.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry, Ky.

Troy Fields
Troy Fields, 65, of Newtown, W. Va., passed away Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, in the Skilled Nursey Facility at Appalachian Regional Hospital in South Williamson, Ky.

Born March, 2, 1939, at Martin County, Ky., he was a son of the late Lewis Fields and Maude Short Fields.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by brothers and sisters.

He was a U.S. veteran having served in the Air Force.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Sue Fields of Newtown; son, Jeff Fields of Norfolk, Va., ; daughter, Cari Cartwright of Atlanta, Ga.; brothers, Luther Fields of Stone, Ky., Claude Fields of Salem, Va.; sisters, Edith Endicott of Louisa, Ky., Maggie McClellan of Delaware; two grandchildren, Samantha Fields and Nicholas Cartwright.

Family and friends will be received from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m., Saturday at the home in Newtown, W. Va.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler, Ky.

Everett J. Oliver

Ret. Captain Everett J. Oliver, 83, of Columbus, Ga., died Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, at Fairview Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy Green officiating.

Burial with military honors will follow at Fort Mitchell National cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be the Adult 2 Sunday School class of Fairview Baptist Church.

Visitation will be Monday, Sept. 28, 2004, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, Ga.

Capt. Oliver was born Dec. 2, 1920, in Pike County, Ky., a son of the late Martha Victoria Smith Oliver and John T. Oliver Sr.

Retired from the U.S. Army, he later worked as a realtor with Broadmoor Realty Company and was property manager for Flournoy and Calhoun Realtors. Capt. Oliver was also a past president of the Columbus Board of Realtors.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Vallariete Norman Oliver; children, Mary Frances Oliver and James Everett Oliver; and sisters, Marie Stokes and Ethel Hager Morris.

Survivors include: two daughters, Angela S. Olivier of Columbus, Ga.; and Patricia Reid and husband Robert of Macon, Ga.; six sisters, Evelyn Dotson and husband James of Pikeville, Ky.; Edith Vipperman of Lexington, Ky.; Pauline Farley and husband Paul of Ransom, Ky.; Ruby Jean McCoy and husband Lucas of McCarr, Ky.; Josephine Varney and husband James of Columbus, Ga.; and Woodra Honaker and husband Joe of Middleton, Ohio; a brother, John T. Oliver of McMinnville, Tenn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fairview Baptist Church Building Fund, 2913 Reese Road, Columbus, GA 31907 or Columbus Hospice, 7020 Moon Road, Columbus, GA 31909.
