Sammy Rose
Sammy Rose, 67, of Chattaroy, W. Va., passed away Tuesday, January 11, 2005, at Pikeville Regional Medical Center.

Born July 1, 1937, in Chattaroy, W. Va., to the late Sam Rose and Mae Alley Rose, he was a retired TV repairman with 49 years of service. He was a member of Williamson Area Church of Christ and a U.S. Army veteran.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, William H. "Bill" Rose.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia Felix Rose; son, Samuel Patrick Rose and his wife, Crystal, of Chattaroy; and two grandchildren, Samuel Christopher and Kiera Rashae Rose.

Funeral services will be held Friday, January 14, 2005, 11 a.m., at Weaver Mortuary with Rev. Joe Cochran officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. View Memory Gardens, Maher, W. Va. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held Thursday, January 13, 2005, 6 - 9 p.m., at the mortuary.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Weaver Mortuary of West Williamson, W. Va.

Landon Norman Jr.
Landon Norman, Jr., 55, of Augusta, Ga., formerly of Thacker, W. Va., passed away on Wednesday, January 12, 2005 in Augusta.

Arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced by the R.S. Jones & Son Funeral Home, Phelps, Ky.

Steven Adams
Steven L. Adams, 38, of Defiance, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, January 12, 2005, at Defiance Regional Medical Center, Defiance, Ohio.

Born October 21, 1966, in Marshall, Mich., to Jim Adams and Janice Ray, he was employed at DMP six years as a tool and die coordinator. He coached Little League baseball, football, basketball, YMCA soccer and was an assistant den leader for WEBLOS II Cub Scout Pack 75.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Myron James Adams.

He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Lisa Adams; two sons, Kyle Adams and A.J. Adams both of the home; his parents, Jim and Sue Adams of Defiance, Ohio and Leon and Janice Walters of Sidney, Ky.; three brothers, Mike Adams of Middletown, Ohio, Brian Adams of Defiance, Ohio and Bob Adams of Defiance, Ohio; one step sister, Brian (Sandi) Kirkendall of Napoleon, Ohio; and three step brothers, Mike (Catrina) Schramm of McClure, Ohio, Joseph Walters of Sidney, Ky. and Eric Walters of Rogersville, Tenn.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 15, 2005, 1:30 p.m. at Mast-Mock-Hoffman Funeral Home, Defiance, Ohio with Rev. Keith Hunsinger officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside cemetery, Defiance County, Ohio.

Visitation will be held Friday evening, 3 - 9 p.m., at Mast-Mock-Hoffman Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Mast-Mock-Hoffman Funeral Home, 529 Jefferson Avenue, Defiance, Ohio.

Arthur Kerns
Arthur D. "Doug" Kerns, 65, of North Spring, W. Va., died Wednesday, January 12, 2005, in the Veterans' Medical Center in Beckley, W. Va., following a long illness.

Mr. Kerns was born November 15, 1939 in North Spring, W. Va., a son of the late Clifton Clyde and Mavis Edna Gillenwater Kerns. He was a United States Army Veteran, a retired coal miner, and an avid outdoors man who loved hunting and fishing. He attended the Little Cub Memorial Baptist Church and most of all he loved his Lord and Savior with whom he is now rejoicing!

In addition to his parents, two brothers, Chester and Robert Kerns, and two sisters, Doris Elkins and Betsy Kerns preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Martha Trent Kerns of the home; one daughter, Deborah Stover and husband Donald of Cramerton, N.C.; one son, Daniel Kerns and wife Jean of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; four grandchildren, Jessica and Janna Stover and Justin and Julian Kerns, and many more in the community who called him "pop paw;" and a host of nieces and nephews. He was well known in the community and had many friends and loved ones. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, January 16, 2005, at 1 p.m., with Reverend Jackie Lester, Reverend Ronnie Lester and Reverend William Cook officiating at the chapel of Fanning Funeral Home in Iaeger, W. Va. Burial will follow in the Community cemetery at North Spring where Military Graveside rites will be conducted.

Pallbearers will be close friends and family.

The family wishes to send a special thanks to the following: Cynthia Paul, Transplant Coordinator at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa., who has taken care of Doug for the last 11 years; to the Donor Family who so unselfishly gave the gift of life that gave Doug 11 years to live the life that he loved so much; to the Doctors and Nurses of the VA Hospital in Beckley who made his last days bearable; and to his friends in the area, so many who cared and too many to name.

Fanning Funeral Home in Iaeger is in charge of arrangements.

Alex McCoy
Alexzander "Alex" McCoy, 20, of Lenore, W. Va., passed away January 4, 2005. He was born March 26, 1984 at logan, W. Va.

He is survived by his mother, Sharon McCoy White and stepfather, Christopher White. He was preceded in death by his great grandparents Dover and Evelyn McCoy and Tilden and Edith Maynard.

Alex was a 2003 graduate of Tug Valley High School. He loved basketball and riding his dirt bike with his buddies.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Megan and Jessica White; his papaw and mamaw, Roger D. and Wanda McCoy; uncles, Roger McCoy Jr., and Ed Blankenheim; aunts, Christine McCoy Blankenheim and Milissa McCoy; two special nieces, Emily and Elizabeth Blankenheim; many great aunts and uncles and cousins; and the love of his life, Jamie Jo Goodson.

Funeral services will be held at the Caney Church of Christ at 11 a.m. Sunday, January 16, 2005, with the ministers Dennis Ooten, Doug Curry and Earnest Napier officiating. Burial will follow in the Ooten cemetery at Laurel Creek, W. Va.

Visitation will be at the funeral home from 6 - 9 p.m. Saturday evening. Pallbearers will be Brandon Colegrove, Craig Davis, John David Messer, Kevin Green, James Workman, Matthew and Josh Maynard and Matthew Goodson.

Chafin Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

James Newsome
James E. (Carbide) Newsome, 71, of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Lenore, W. Va., passed away January 4, 2005, at the home of his son.

He was born May 15, 1933 in Mingo County, W. Va., the son of the late Lawrence and Georgia Dempsey Newsome.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Newsome; two sons, James and Hobert Newsome; and a sister, Mary Ann Bryant.

Survivors include sons, Lloyd (Phyllis) Newsome, Thomas (Susan) Newsome and Mike (Melody) Newsome all of Columbus, Ohio, Terry (Tiffany) Newsome of Williamson, W. Va. and Lawrence (Drema) Newsome of Morehead, Ky.; brothers, Willie (Francis) Newsome of Avalia, Ohio, Lawrence (Linda) Newsome, Johnny (Fannie) Newsome, and Thomas (Delores) Newsome, all of Lenore, W. Va.; three sisters, Zona Gail Scarberry of Utica, Ohio, Swanee Maynard of Laurel Creek, W. Va. and Joyce Ferris of Lenore, W. Va.; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Parsley Bottom Freewill Baptist Church at Lenore, W. Va. Saturday morning at 11 a.m., January 8, 2005, with the Rev. Wayne Runyon officiating. Burial will follow in the Bryant-Newsome cemetery at Lenore, W. Va.

Visitation will be at the church after 8 p.m. Friday evening. His sons will serve as pallbearers.

Chafin Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

James P. Gray
James Paul Gray, 77, of Williamson, W. Va., died Sunday, January 23, 2005, in Mingo Manor Nursing Home.

Born April 13, 1927, in Williamson, W. Va., he was a son of the late James Gray and Annie Lambert Gray.

He was proceeded in death by two sisters.

He was a former employee with N&W Railroad; repairman with the former B&L Furniture Company; a deacon at Logan Street First Baptist Church; served as church clerk and treasurer of the senior choir; member of the Williamson Crown Lodge No. 16 F&Am; member of the Eastern Star Evening Tide Chapter No. 26; Veteran of the U.S. Army; and attended Liberty High School.

His survivors include brothers, John C. Gray of Laurelton, N.Y., William S. Gray of Bronx, N.Y.; sisters, Inez Martinez of Williamson, W. Va., Shirley Johnson of Teaneck, N.J.; and Ashley Murrell of Williamson, W. Va., who he was fond of and raised.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, January 29, 2005, at the Logan Street First Baptist Church with the Rev. Gerald Dotson officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain View Memory Gardens at Maher.

Members of the Williamson Crown Lodge No. 16 F&AM will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held at noon, one hour prior to the funeral services at the church.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Gregory Funeral Home Inc., of Williamson, W. Va.

George Jackson Jr.
George Jackson, Jr., 77, of Williamson, W. Va., passed away Tuesday, January 25, 2005, at Williamson Memorial Hospital.

Born October 3, 1927, in Williamson, W. Va., to the late George Jackson, Sr. and Rose McCoy Jackson, he was a former member of the Williamson Police Department and the retired Chief of Police with the Palm Bay, Florida Police Department. He was a veteran of the United States Navy.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by brother, Charles Jackson; and sister, Lillian Jackson.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Monica Charles Jackson; son, William Allen Jackson of Mexico; daughter, Brenda Rose Jackson Dobbs and her husband, John Dobbs, of Marietta, Ga.; brothers, Paul Jackson of Melbourne, Fla. and Pearl Jackson of Jacksonville, Fla.; sister, Garnet Davis of Arizona; three grandchildren, Matthew Kirkwood, Jason Jackson and Jennifer Jackson; and great grandchildren, Julian Jackson and Jayden Jackson.

Funeral services will be held Friday, January 28, 2005, noon, at Weaver Mortuary, with Rev. Ron Sanger officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. View Memory Gardens, Huddy, Ky.

Serving as pallbearers are Richard Jackson, Toby McClanahan, Chad McClanahan, Matthew Kirkwood, Jason Jackson, David Charles, Jerid Pyszkowski, Jeff Trent, Mack Trent and Brian Trent. Honorary pallbearers are John Dobbs, Paul Jackson, Dan Charles, Sam Charles, Stanley Charles, Tommy Ray McClanahan and Hassel Trent.

Visitation will be held Thursday evening, January 27, 2005, 6 - 9 p.m., at the mortuary.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Weaver Mortuary of West Williamson, W. Va.

Robin Chafin
Robin Anne McFarland Chafin, 48, of Williamson, W. Va. went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 25, 2005, at her residence.

Born May 14, 1956, in Williamson, W. Va., to Betty Maynard McFarland of Williamson, W. Va. and the late Glen B. McFarland, she was a homemaker. She was a long time member of Grace Baptist Temple. Robin was a loving mother, daughter and sister who will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her grandparents, Glen and Bessie McFarland and James and Edith Maynard.

Surviving are her sons, Brian and his wife, Rosie Hensley of South Pittsburgh, Tenn. and Scott and his wife, Jenny of Tracy City, Tenn.; brother, Tim McFarland and his wife Kathy of McCarr, Ky.; and two grandchildren, Madison Taylore Hensley and Jarren Tyler Hensley also of Tennessee. She is also survived by a host of aunts, uncles and cousins too numerous to mention.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 29, 2005, 1 p.m., at Weaver Mortuary, with Rev. Ron Sanger officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. View Memory Gardens, Maher, W. Va.

Serving as pallbearers are Ronnie, Randy and Robbie Sanger, Clarence and Alfred Crigger and Jeffrey DeLong. Honorary pallbearers are men of Grace Baptist Temple.

Visitation will be held Friday evening, January 28, 2005, 6 - 9 p.m., at the mortuary.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Weaver Mortuary of West Williamson, W. Va.

Hercle Brewer
Hercle Brewer, 89, of Rt. 1 Kermit, W. Va., passed away Friday, January 7, 2005, at Appalachian Regional Hospital, South Williamson, Ky.

Born November 5, 1915, in Mingo County, W. Va. to the late Leona Brewer of Kermit, W. Va., he was an Army veteran.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sister, Hazel Marcum and brother, Gomer Brewer.

Surviving are his son, Joseph Brewer; daughter, Loise Warren and her husband Bill of Tennessee, Kathy Flemings of Lenore, W. Va. and Coetta Brewer of Huntington, W. Va.; brothers, Thurman Brewer of Columbus, Ohio and Thomas Brewer of Columbus, Ohio; sisters, Ivory Parsley of Kermit, W. Va., Edna May Stepp of Kermit, W. Va. and Pauline Brewer; eight grandchildren; and several great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday, January 10, 2005, 1 p.m., at Rosetown Freewill Church with the Rev. Jerry Messer officiating. Burial will follow at Rose cemetery.

Visitation will be held at the church beginning at 1 p.m., Saturday and continuing on Sunday.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home, Inez, Ky.

Vera Murphy
Vera Murphy, 71, of Red Jacket, W. Va., died Saturday, January 8, 2005, in Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital, South Williamson, Ky.

Born November 30, 1927, at Alumwick, W. Va., she was a daughter of the late Earl C. Johnson and Lula Roberts Johnson.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Murphy; brothers, Earnest "Popeye" S. Johnson, Clarence Earl Johnson, and Franklin Dee Johnson.

She was a member of the Apostolic Lighthouse Church at Lando, W. Va., and a homemaker.

Her survivors include brother, Boyd "Eddie" Orrell of Portsmouth, Ohio; sisters, Estelene Prater and Shirley Ferrell, both of Red Jacket. Laurette Cisco of Beech Creek. W. Va., Juanita DeHart of Matewan, W. Va., Margaret Byus, Betty Mounts, Lula Gallimore and Ellen Blackburn, all of Hillsboro, Ohio; she is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, January 11, 2005, at the Chambers Funeral Home Chapel in Matewan with the Revs. Jimmy Copley and Jimmy Fields officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain View Memory Gardens at Maher, W. Va.

Visitation will begin from 6-9 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home with services held nightly at 7 p.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of Chambers Funeral Services Inc., of Matewan, W. Va.

Bill Williams
Bill P. Williams, 79, of Salisbury, Md., died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center. Born in Pulaski, Va., he was a son of the late Clarence and Mable Williams of Slater Branch, Ky.

Mr. Williams is survived by his wife, Margaret Williams; three sons, James, David and Mark, all of Salisbury; five grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers, Marvin Williams of Slater Branch, Danny Williams of Crown Point, Ind., and Charles Williams of Wheelwright, Ky.; four sisters, Betty Francis of Gilbert, W. Va., Helen Fouch of Slater Branch, Ky., Shirley Newell of Columbus, Ohio, and Joyce Maynard of Turkey Creek, Ky.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 22, in Salisbury, Md.
