Samuel Vandevender, 66, of Hurricane, W. Va., passed away at Hubbard Hospice House on Thursday, March 102, 005.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, March 14, at the Baptist Temple, Charleston, W. Va., with Dr. Dennis Johnson officiating. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in South Charleston, W. Va. The family will receive friends from 2 - 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 13, 2005, at Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home Chapel.

Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

William Messer
William Messer, 73, of Genoa, W. Va., passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at St. Marys Hospital, Huntington, W. Va.

Born May 10, 1931, in West Virginia, to the late William R. and Fannie Salmons Messer, he was a retired Department of Highways employee and a member of Old Jennies Creek United Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Mary E. Messer of Genoa, W. Va.; sons, Columbus (Merceta) Messer of Columbus, Ohio, Tiney Messer of Kermit, W. Va., James (Donna) Messer of Fort Gay, W. Va., Johnny Messer of Kermit, W. Va., Harold Messer of Genoa, W. Va. and Riley (Emma) Messer, Jr. of Genoa, W. Va.; daughters, Mary Ellen (Lloyd) Messer of Genoa, W. Va. and Alice (James L.) Messer of Genoa, W. Va.; 18 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 4, 2005, 1 p.m., at Old Jennies Creek United Baptist Church with Rev. Russell Messer, Willie Messer and Ray Messer, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Messer cemetery, Jennies Creek, W. Va.

Visitation will be held beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Old Jennies Creek United Baptist Church and continuing until time of service on Friday.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home, Inez, Ky.

Clinton Walls
Clinton Albert Walls, 69, of Gilbert, W. Va., passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at Logan Regional Medical Center, Logan, W. Va.

He was born May 24, 1935, in Leatherwood, W. Va. to the late Albert and Lula Toler Walls.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 3, 2005, 1 p.m., at Christian Freewill Baptist church with Rev. James Ellis and Rev. Jackie Grimmett officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline cemetery, Justice, W. Va.

Friends may call the Christian Freewill Baptist Church at Christian, W. Va., Thursday, March 3, 2005, after 6 p.m.

Mounts Funeral Home of Gilbert, W. Va. is in charge of arrangements.

Everett Payne
Everett Payne, 85, of Bassett, Va., formerly of Paynesville, W. Va., died Saturday, March 11, 2005, at Martinsville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 14, 2005, at 12 noon, at the Family Worship Center at Jolo, W. Va.

Burial will follow at the Perry Vance cemetery at Rockridge, W. Va.

Visitation will be held Sunday, March 13, 2005, at 6 p.m., at the Family Worship Center.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Inc., Elkhorn City, Ky.

David Childress II
David Keith Childress II, 24, of Williamson, W. Va., died Saturday, March 11, 2005, at his residence.

He was born September 14, 1980, at South Williamson, Ky., to David Keith and Mary Louise Childress of Williamson, W. Va.

He was a cook at the Thoroughbred Steakhouse.

Survivors include, fiancee, Miranda Chafin; two daughters, Alyssa Brooke Childress and Debra Louise Childress both of the home; two brothers, Robert Lloyd Childress and Shane Michael Childress both of Williamson, W. Va.; and a host of aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 14, 2005, at 1 p.m., at Rogers Funeral Home with Johnny Branch officiating.

Burial will follow at Mountain View Memory Gardens at Huddy, Ky.

Honorary pallbearers will be Robert and Shane Childress.

Active pallbearers willl be Bo Childress, Josh Patterson, Danny Ray Childress, Daniel Thompson, Chad Childress, and Alan Chafin.

Visitation will be held Sunday, March 13, 2005, with special services Sunday night at 7 p.m.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry, Ky.

Fay Scott Jr.
Fay Scott Jr., 66, of Newport News, Va., died Saturday, March 12, 2005.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Weaver Mortuary of West Williamson.

Ronald Adams
Ronald Blaine Adams, 65, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away Thursday, March 10, 2005, at Doctors West Hospital.

He retired from Trans Lights and was a two time Golden Glove Champion.

Ronald was preceded in death by his parents, Charley and Lelia Adams; brothers and sisters, Roy, Ray, Ralph, and Reba Adams.

He is survived by his wife, Joanne Adams; his children Ronald Blaine (Tracy) Adams, Jr., Danny Lee (Jill) Adams, Ericka (Brandon) Hussey, Karla (Scott) Kerkes, Cindy (Terry) Holliday, Rhonda (Steven) White; brothers, Roger (Marcella) Adams of Huntington, W. Va., Robert (Mary) Adams of Delbarton, W. Va., Richard Adams of Delbarton, W. Va.; sisters, Rita (Juan) Adams-Hatfield, Rachel (Barry) Adams-Dotson, Rebecca (Garland) Adams-Sheppard; grandchildren, Amber, Ronald III, and Jeromy Adams, Danny Jr., Will, Christian, Tanner, and Blaine Adams, Delaney and Cameron Hussey, Logan, Adam, and Tyler Kerkes, Colton and Morgan Holliday, Chad VanderGallien, Amanda and Jory Roesler. A host of aunts, nephews, nieces, great nephews and nieces, family and friends.

Friends may visit on Sunday, March 13, 2005, from 6 p.m. at the Spence-Miller Funerl Home, 2697 Columbus Street, Grove City, where funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Monday.

Officiating will be Pastor Jamie Elliot.

Interment will follow at the Grove City cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in Ronald's memory to The American Heart Association.

He left this world to be with his Lord and Savior and his loving family who was waiting for him.

Clifton Chafin
Clifton Ford Chafin, 70, of Cow Creek, W. Va., passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at Logan Regional Medical Center.

He was born December 14, 1934 at Cow Creek, a son of the late Elbert and Lucinda (curry) Chafin.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 5, 2005, 1 p.m., at the Collins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Glenn White and Rev. Homer Mahon officiating. Burial will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens at Godby with military graveside rites.

Friends may call on Friday from 6 - 9 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to services on Saturday.

Collins Funeral Home of Switzer is in charge of arrangements.

Ernest Lockhart
Ernest Ray Lockhart, 60, of Beech Creek, W. Va., passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at the Williamson Memorial Hospital.

He was born September 1, 1944, at Salt Rock, W. Va., the son of the late Paul Edward and Edith Ross Lockhart. He was also preceded in death by his uncle/brother, Jim Ross.

He was a retired coal miner. Mr. Lockhart was raised by his grandparents, the late Andrew and Jean Ross. He was a member of the Hugh C. Boyd Lodge #119 as Secretary and was also a 32nd Degree Master Mason.

Survivors include his wife, Shelva Staten Lockhart; one son, Ernest Ray Lockhart II and wife Paula of Ragland, W. Va.; one daughter, Tanya and husband Alan Sabo of Atlanta, Ga.; brothers/uncles, Kenny and Clovis Ross of Madison Creek, W. Va.; sister/aunt, Jane Spurlock of Ona, W. Va.; grandchildren, Lacey Lockhart, Olivia Lockhart and Savannah Madison Sabo.

Funeral services will be held at the Chafin Funeral Home at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 5, 2005, with Bro. Gene Clemons officiating. Burial will follow in the Staten Family cemetery at Beech Creek, W. Va. with graveside rites conducted by the Hugh C. Boyd Lodge #119.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Friday evening from 6 - 9 p.m. with special services being held at 7 p.m. with the Revs. Lowell Sparks and David Fergusson officiating. Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Chafin Funeral Home, Delbarton, W. Va.

Effie Steele
Effie Steele, 88, of Hanover, W. Va., passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at Welch Community Hospital, Welch, W. Va.

She was born March 28, 1916, in Wharncliffe, W. Va., to the late Marion and Lydia Stanley Hatfield.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 5, 2005, 1 p.m., at Mounts Funeral Home Chapel, Gilbert, W. Va. with Rev. Larry Lester officiating. Burial will follow at Beechfork cemetery, Wharncliffe, W. Va.

Friends may call at the Mounts Funeral Home Chapel Friday evening from 6 - 9 p.m.

Millicent Vincent
Millicent Lee Cromer Vincent, 77, died Wednesday, March 2, 2005 at her home in Kingsport, Tenn. She suffered frail health for several years and is now freed from earthly bounds to join her husband of 47 years in eternal rest.

Mrs. Vincent was the daughter of the late Everett Cromer, deceased in 1939, and Mayme Elswick Cromer, who died in 2001 shortly after her 100th birthday. Mrs. Vincent was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Edward Vincent, in 1991.

She was born in southern West Virginia and spent many of her early years in the Gilbert area. She moved with her family to Tazewell, Va. in 1956 where she remained until her declining years forced her to relocate to Kingsport to be near her family. Her life was devoted to raising her four daughters, maintaining a home, sewing and gardening. She surrounded herself with the things she loved the most ... her family, her books and her Boston Terriers. She was a member of Tazewell Presbyterian Church and the Eastern Star.

She will be deeply missed by her brother, Everett Cromer of Tazewell, Va.; daughters: Millie Grindstaff of Ocala, Florida; Beverly Shelton, Chris Hamilton and Donna Carver of Kingsport, Tenn.; sons-in-law Michael Shelton and Tony Carver; and grandchildren Brock Meade, Karen Hamilton, Danielle Carver and Robert Carver. Her most recent canine companions, Betsy and Baby, will sadly grieve her absence as well as other friends and relatives she leaves behind.

The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Friday March 4, 2005 at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Downtown Kingsport

Funeral Services will be held 2pm Saturday March 5, 2005 at Tazewell Presbyterian Church, Tazewell, VA. with Minister James H. Grant Jr. officiating.

The Family will receive friends from 1-2pm Saturday at the church prior to the service.

Burial will follow in Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.

Pallbearers will be Michael Shelton, Brock Meade, Tony Carver, Robert Carver, Travis Davidson and Guy Trent Jr.

Honorary Pallbearers are Larry Taylor and Everett Cromer.

Jack Dillon
Jack Dillon, 78, of Hampden, W. Va., passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at Logan Regional Medical Center.

Born November 27, 1926, in Webb, W. Va., to the late William and Rennie Williamson Dillon, he was a retired coal miner, veteran of WWII, Sunday School Superintendent and Deacon of the Faith Independent Baptist Church of Logan.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his three brothers, Charles, Joe and Emory; and two sisters, Blanch Shea and Sarah Evans.

Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Lorene Brewer Dillon; two sisters, Gladys Chafin of Valley View and Helen Garrido of Chapmanville; one brother, William (Maxine) Dillon, Jr. of Whitman; one special nephew, Steven Barto; and a host of nieces and nephews and others friends.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 6, 2005, 2 p.m., at James Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Mike Rose officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn cemetery.

Visitation will be held Saturday evening from 6 - 9 p.m. at James Funeral Home.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of James Funeral Home, Logan, W. Va.

Garnett Smith
Garnett May Smith, 78, of Varney, W. Va., passed away Thursday, March 3, 2005, at Pikeville Medical Center.

Born May 14, 1921, in Pike County, Ky., to the late Victoria Price Murphy and Melvin Murphy, she was a homemaker and a member of Brushy Creek Baptist Mission.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Kermit Murphy, Ed Murphy and Alonzo Murphy; three sisters, Winnie Murphy, Bessie Davis and Dean Ray; and two half brothers, Charlie Muncy and Cecil Muncy.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 6, 2005, 1 p.m., at J.W. Call Funeral Home with John George Blackburn officiating. Burial will follow at Smith Family cemetery, Varney.

Visitation will be held after 6 p.m. Friday at J.W. Call Funeral Home with special services at 7 p.m. each evening.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of J.W. Call & Son Funeral Home, Pikeville, Ky.

Surviving are her husband, Arnold D. Smith; son, M. Richard Smith of Varney; daughter, Kathy Sue Bentley of Raccoon; brother, Everett Murphy of Brushy; and two grandchildren, Olivia Bentley and Isaac Bentley.
