Steven K. Brewer
Steven K. Brewer, 35, of Whitehall, Ohio, formerly of Kermit, W. Va., passed away Saturday, March 5, 2005, at Coshocton Memorial Hospital.

He was born Aug. 30, 1969, in Columbus, Ohio, the son of Sue Brewer of Whitehall and the late Calvin Brewer. He was also preceded in death by one nephew, Charles Dials.

Mr. Brewer was a 1987 graduate of Kermit High School.

Additional survivors include two daughters, Chelsea and Morgan Brewer of McArthur, Ohio; five siblings, Teresa (Dennis) Price and Arlena Dials, both of Gahanna, Ohio, Mike Brewer of Grandview, Ohio, Brian Brewer of Whitehall, Ohio, and Ronnie (Trenna) Brewer of Kermit, W. Va.; grandmother, Rita Lovins of Crum, W. Va.; nieces and nephews, Joshua and Jessica Price, Joey (Christie) Dials, Kayela Dials, Seth and Rhiannon Brewer, Whitney and Katelyn Brewer, along with many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, 2005, at Crouse-Kauber-Sammons Funeral Home, 225 N. Main Street, Johnstown, Ohio, with pastor Jim Vanover officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove cemetery, Alexandria, Ohio.

Friends may call from 5 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at the funeral home.

Manuel Ooten
Manuel Ooten, 77, of Duncan Fork, W. Va., passed away Wednesday, March 16, 2005 in Williamson Memorial Hospital.

He was born February 9, 1928, at Myrtle, W. Va., the son of the late Clece and Cordia Ooten.

He was also preceded in death by his ex-wife Delores Browning, and a son, Manuel David Ooten.

He was retired from the Black Rock Asphalt Company and attended the 20 Whitman Community Church.

He is survived by grandsons whom he helped raise, Ryan (Jennifer) Ooten of Parsley Bottom, W. Va., Brad (Andrea) Ooten of Hurricane, W. Va., daughter-in-law, Kathy Ferris of Louisa, Ky., special nephew, Byron Ooten of Myrtle, W. Va., with whom he made his home, and Burgess Ooten of Knoxville, Tenn. He had a great-granddaughter Rianna Ooten.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 18, 2005 at 11 a.m., at the Chafin Funeral Home with the Rev. Joaquine Ooten officiating.

Burial will follow in the Estepp cemetery at Duncan Fork, W. Va.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Thursday evening from 6-9 p.m. Chafin Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Warfield Collins
Warfield Collins, 80, of Naugatuck, W. Va., passed away Saturday, March 5, 2005, at Gainesville, Fla.

He was born June 29, 1924 in Martin County, Ky., to the late Ruben Collins and Bessie Bocock Collins.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 9, 2005, 1 p.m., at Phelps & Son Funeral Home with James Satterfield officiating. Burial will follow at Warfield cemetery, Warfield, Ky.

Visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 4 - 9 p.m. at Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Inez, Ky.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Inez, Ky.

Richard Lee Justice
Richard Lee Justice, 39, of Delbarton, W. Va., formerly of Peach Creek, departed this life on Thursday, March 3, 2005, at his residence.

He was born September 2, 1965 at Logan, the son of Raymond Justice of Low Gap Road and the late Molly Jo Justice.

In addition to his mother, he is preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Letha Peck, and his paternal grandparents, Ross and Hattie Justice.

Richard was a graduate of Logan High School, a coal miner most of his life, he was of the Baptist faith, enjoyed the outdoors which included hunting and fishing, but most of all he enjoyed being with his children.

He is survived by his stepmother, Helen Justice of Low Gap Road; two children, Carrie Dawn Justice of Charleston and Brandon Scott Justice of Elk Creek; one sister, Patty Ann Ballard of Summerville, N.C.; two brothers, Raymond Paul Justice, Jr. of Pennsylvania and David Michael Justice of Switzer; the mother of his children, Carolyn Justice of Charleston; and his companion, Pam Newsome of Delbarton.

Richard will be missed by several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 9, 2005, at Freeman Funeral Home with Elbert Collins Jr. and Darrell Newsome officiating. Burial will follow at the Forest Lawn cemetery, Pecks Mill, W. Va.

Friends may call Tuesday, March 8, 2005, from 6 - 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Gordon Mills, Keegan Smallwood, Kevin Maynard, Brandon Justice, Cole White and Phillip Hensley.

Honorary pallbearers will be Lewie Hensley, Harold Otis Adams Jr., Timmy Marcum, Rodney Curry, Billy Hager and Jay Curry.

Dempsey Carter
William Dempsey Carter, 79, of Gilbert, W. Va., passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at CAMC Memorial Division, Charleston, W. Va.

He was born May 6, 1925, in Mallory, W. Va., to the late Charles and Emma Lyall Carter.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 13, 2005, 1 p.m., at Mounts Funeral Home Chapel, Gilbert, W. Va., with Rev. Diamond Carter officiating. Burial will follow at the Hatfield cemetery, Hampden, W. Va.

Friends may call at the Mounts Funeral Home Chapel in Gilbert, W. Va., Saturday evening from 6 - 9 p.m.

Wayne Wiedel
Wayne R. Wiedel of Bellingham, Wa., passed away on Tuesday, March 8, 2005, in Bellingham. He was 70, born February 16, 1935, in Hebron, Neb., to Anna (Schmidt) and Clemence Wiedel.

Wayne was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and recipient of a Purple Cross. He retired from the U.S. Army as a Staff Sgt. He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret in 2002.

Survivors include his daughters, Anna Wiedel of MN., Dorothy Wiedel of Wenatchee, WA; sons, Wayne Robert Wiedel, Jr., of Ky., Michael and wife Doris Wiedel of Iraq, William and wife Diana Wiedel of W. Va., Charles Wiedel and fiancée Julie Champagne of Bellingham; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at 5 p.m., Thursday, March 10, at the Community Baptist Church in Bellingham.

Jones-Moles Funeral Home, Bellingham, Wa. is in charge of arrangements.

Gladys Hatfield

Gladys Hatfield, 94, of Sprigg, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at the St. Mary's Hospital in Huntington, W. Va.

She was born on Oct. 11, 1908, in Virginia to late Casper Eugene and Sarah Jane Perdue Blankenship. She was a retired postmaster at Sprigg with 20 years of service. She was of the Methodist faith and a member of the UMWA Association. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. To know her was to love her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Emitt Hatfield, whom she married on April 20, 1927; one son, Auldie Gene Hatfield; four brothers, Ed Blankenship, Harry Blankenship, Tom Blankenship, Okey Blankenship; three sisters, Beulah New, Mamie New, and Vena Mitchelle; one grandson, Charles Joseph Dudley; and one great grandson, Mark Barnette.

Mrs. Hatfield is survived by one son, Jack (Peggy) Hatfield of Williamson; one daughter, Ethel Griffey Glendean (Charles) Dudley of Massillon, Ohio; one brother, Herbert Blankenship of Penhook, W. Va.; and one sister, Carry Brown of Mineola, Texas; 10 grandchildren, Phillip Hatfield, Greg Hatfield, Chris Hatfield, Deborah J. Brown, Tammy French, Linda Barnette, Judy Johnson, Jenny Jordon, Gladys Glendean Robey, and Anita Nuzum; 12 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, at the Weaver Mortuary of West Williamson with the Revs. Verlin Epling, Virgil Hamilton and Harvey Grimmett officiating. Burial will be in the Hatfield cemetery at Sprigg.

Pallbearers will be Phillip Hatfield, Greg Hatfield, Donald McCoy, Brian McCoy, Tilton Smith and Ed Brown.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the mortuary.

Earl Harmon

Earl Harmon, 64, of Wharncliffe, died on Friday, July 31, 2003, at his residence.

He was born on April 4, 1939, in Micco, W. Va., to the late Allen and Mary Mounts Harmon. He was a member of the Ben Creek Free Pentecostal Church of God.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one half brother, Ralph Harmon; one infant sister, Allie Harmon; and two half sisters, Dora Tomblin and Nellie Spence.

Mr. Harmon is survived by his wife, Stella Jean Harmon; one son Earl Harmon Jr. of Wharncliffe; two daughters, Maranda Sue Wolford, and her husband Joey, and Stella Marie Gibson, both of Wharncliffe; one granddaughter, Roxanna Marie Gibson of Wharncliffe; three sisters, Bessie Hatfield of Chapmanville, W. Va., Dorothy Phillips of Harts Creek, W. Va., and Wada Harmon, of Lancaster; one half sister, Gertrude Booth; and two special friends, Lanny Hatfield and Randy Johnson II, both of Wharncliffe.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, at the Ben Creek Free Pentecostal Church of God in Wharncliffe with the Revs. Denny May and Roy Lee Lester officiating. Burial will follow in the Dotson cemetery in Wharncliffe.

Friends may call at the church from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the church.

Clarence Edward Murray

Clarence Edward Murray, 76, of Kermit died on Thursday, July 31, 2003, J.J. Jordan Nursing Home in Johnson County, Ky.

Visitation will be at the Warfield Chapel of the Phelps and Son Funeral Home from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, with a special service at 7 p.m. Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, in the Salyers cemetery at Sitka, Ky.

Leo Small

Leo Small, 70, of South Helmsburg Road, Nashville, Ind., died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, in the Columbus (Ind.) Regional Hospital.

He was born in Kermit on May 23, 1933, to the late Fred and Lilly York Small. He was employed by General Motors, in Muncie, Ind., where he retired in 1987. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Kermit and the Avondale Sympathy Club.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister.

Mr. Small is survived by his wife, Virgie Prichard Small; three sons, Ernie Lee Small and Clyde Small, both of Muncie, and Randy Steven Small of Oakville, Ind.; two daughters, Ernestine Waldon of Muncie, and Glenna Jean Lane of Forest Hills, Ky.; four brothers, Fredric Small of West Virginia, and Jack Small, Jim Small, and Bill Small, all of Muncie; two sisters, Betty Thrasher and Joann Estepp, both of Muncie; eight grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at the Warfield Chapel of the Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Howard and Small cemetery in Kermit.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 3, at the Bond-Mitchell Funeral Home in Nashville, Ind., and from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday, Aug. 4, at the Warfield Chapel.

Willie J. Shipman
Willie J. Shipman, 65, of Patriot, OH passed away Saturday, August 2, 2003 at home.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 5, 2003 at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, Scottown, by Pastor Kelly Stapleton.

Burial will follow in the Mt. Pleasant Baptist cemetery.

Willie was born March 1, 1938 in Mingo County, WV to the late Carl and Minnie Dempsey Shipman.

Willie is survived by his wife, Emma Ooten Shipman.

In addition to his wife, Willis is survived by two sons, William Shipman and James Shipman, both of Patriot; one daughter, Michelle Moore of Proctorville, OH; two granddaughters, Kristen and Nikki Shipman; one grandson, Nathaniel Moore; one great-granddaughter, Kirstyn Shipman; three sisters, Geneva Cather of Winchester, VA, Ann Kniece of Columbus, OH and Neppie Morgan of Newark, OH.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, August 4, 2003 at Hall Funeral Home, 625 State Route 775, Proctorville, OH.

Thomas Dillon
Thomas Woodrow Dillon, 82, of Lenore, W. Va., passed away Wednesday, August 6, 2003, at Millers Creek, W. Va.

Born September 11, 1920, in Laurel Creek, W. Va., to the late James Richard Dillon and Anna Sturgill Dillon, he was a former self employed logger.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Victoria Newsome Dillon, who passed away in 1976; brothers, Ashley Sidney Dillon and Grover Cleveland Dillon; sisters, Martha Reames, Sadie Workman, Edna, Ann and Lorine Dillon.

Surviving are his son, Thomas A. Dillon of Lenore, W. Va.; daughter, Ann Brewer of Trace Creek, W. Va.; sister, Esther D. Marcum of Lake, W. Va.; special friends, June Chapman and family of Laurel Creek, W. Va.; three grandchildren, Patty Conley of Chapmanville, W. Va., James H. Ooten of Williamson, W. Va. and Thomas Dillon of Ethel, W. Va.; five great grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 9, 2003, 1 p.m. at Calvary Freewill Baptist Church at Dingess, W. Va. with Rev. Sidney Moore officiating. Interment will follow at Sturgill cemetery at Laurel Creek, W. Va. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held Friday after 5 p.m. at the church.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler, Ky.

Karen Lynn Totten Ferrell
Karen Lynn Totten Ferrell, 43, of Swannanoa, N.C., passed away Thursday, August 7, 2003, in the St. Joseph's Hospital in Asheville, N.C.

Born June 23, 1960 in Williamson, W. Va., she was the daughter of James Pat and Shirley Gay Hercey Totten of Taylorville, W. Va. She fought a long and courageous battle with Crohn's Disease.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Varney, W. Va. and attended Burch High School. She earned an associate degree in secretarial science at AB Tech in Asheville, N.C.

Survivors in addition to her parents include: a son, Timothy Scott Ferrell and former husband, Mark Ferrell, of Asheville, N.C.; two sisters, Barbara Hoppe of Mobile, Ala., and Katherine McDonald of Houston, Tx.; grandmothers, Alma Hercey of Princeton, W. Va. and Alada Totten Fraley of Delbarton, W. Va.

Funeral services will be held at the Chafin Funeral Home Sunday afternoon, August 10, 2003, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Bill Snodgrass officiating. Burial will take place the Roselawn cemetery in Princeton, W. Va. Monday morning at 11 a.m. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held Saturday evening, from 6-9 p.m., with services starting at 7 p.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of Chafin Funeral Home of Delbarton, W. Va.
