Samuel Vanover

Samuel "Sammy" Vanover, 67, of Edgarton, W. Va., passed away Thursday, June 3, 2004, at his home.

He was born June 7, 1937, in Elkhorn City, Ky., to the late Sam Vanover and Agnes Maynard Vanover.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.

Surviving are his son, John Vanover (Tammy Sue) of Clinton, Tenn.; brothers, Daniel Vanover of Feds Creek, Ky. and H.D. Vanover of Feds Creek, Ky.; sisters, Linda Osborne of Richville, Ohio, Joyce Stigall of Galion, Ohio, Pauline Campenella of Bucyrus, Ohio, June Daniels of Edgarton, W. Va., Gloria Wolford of North Carolina, Mary Alice Chapman of Craigsville, W. Va., Annette Vanover of Phelps, Ky., Kathy Vanover of Morehead, Ky. and Danielle Vanover of Marrowbone, Ky.; one grandchild, Miranda Kali Vanover of Clinton, Tenn.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 5, 2004, 1 p.m., at Chambers Funeral Services' Chapel with burial following at Harris cemetery at Thacker Hollow #11, Thacker, W. Va. Rev. Ronnie Wolford will be officiating. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, June 4, 2004, at the Chapel with services at 7 p.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of Chambers Funeral Services, Inc., of Matewan, W. Va.

Eckle Southard Jr.

Eckle Southard Jr., 80, of Coal Mountain, W. Va., passed away Sunday, June 13, 2004, at Logan Regional Medical Center, Logan, W. Va.

He was born November 29, 1923, in Sandy Huff, W. Va., to the late Eckle and Hattie Dotson Southard.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 16, 2004, 1 p.m., at Big Cub Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Louis Collings and Rev. Shana Hamilton officiating. Burial will follow at Paul memorial Gardens, Matheny, W. Va.

Friends may call Big Cub Missionary Baptist Church on Tuesday, June 15, 2004, from 6 - 11 p.m.

Mounts Funeral Home of Gilbert, W. Va., is in charge of the arrangements.

Fred Thompson Jr.

Fred "Ted" Thompson Jr., 74, of Hell Creek, W. Va., passed away June 13, 2004, at the Appalachian Regional Hospital.

He was born January 9, 1930 at Bias, W. Va., the son of the late Fred Sr. and Nancy Carey Thompson. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Jon Jon Thompson; three brothers, John, Jessie and Lew Thompson; and two sisters, Edna Hall and Nancy Lee Thompson.

He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in the Korean War. He was also a retired coal miner and member of the UMWA. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his wife, Beulah "Boots" Hundley Thompson; sons, Carl Thompson of Hell Creek and Johnny (Kathy) Thompson, also of Hell Creek; two sisters, Priscilla Howard of Aflex, Ky. and Carrie Fouch of Ohio; grandchildren, Jason (Jaime) Thompson of South Point, Ohio, J.D. Thompson and Carl Thompson Jr. of Hell Creek, and Amanda (Mark) Goff of Chapin, S.C.; and special great grandson, Blake Thompson.

Funeral services will be held at the Chafin Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. June 16, 2004 with the Elder Jimmy Maynard officiating. Burial will follow in the Thompson cemetery at Hell Creek, W. Va.

Visitation will be at the funeral home from 6 - 9 p.m. with services starting at 7 p.m. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Chafin Funeral Hoe is in charge of the arrangements.

Ira Gibson

Ira Heath Gibson, 22, of Ben Creek Station Road, Wharncliffe, W. Va., passed away Sunday, June 13, 2004, at Logan Regional Medical Center.

Born February 24, 1982, in South Williamson, Ky. to Irvin Gibson and Sharon Sparks Gibson, he was a mechanic and of the Church of God faith.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Ira Carson Gibson.

Surviving are his two sisters, Shenna Sparks (James Osborne) of Gilbert Creek, W. Va. and Miranda Glandon (Steven Todd Glandon) of Hampden, W. Va.; maternal grandparents, James and Essie Dawn Sparks; paternal grandparent, Janice Gibson; one nephew, Chaston Christian; and three nieces, Shelley Christian, Destiny Stepp and Lindsey Glandon.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 16, 2004, 2 p.m., at Wharncliffe Church of God, Pastor Eddie Compton. Walter Grimmett will officiate and burial will follow at the Glen Alum Family cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers are Chris Sparks, Nick Christian, Brandon Sammons, Harvey Harrison, Randy Johnson, Daniel Mounts. Honorary pallbearers are Brian Gibson, Jason Gibson, James Sparks, Robert Sparks, Kenneth Trent, Chaston Christian and Brandon Dotson.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 15, 2004, 6 - 9 p.m. at the church.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Collins Funeral Home, Switzer, W. Va.

James Blankenship

James "Doc" Blankenship, 74, of Williamson, W. Va., passed away Monday, June 14, 2004, at Williamson Memorial Hospital.

Born May 3, 1930, in Williamson, W. Va., to the late Richard Blankenship and Kathleen Mounts Blankenship, he was retired from Direct Oil Company. Mr. Blankenship was a member of East Williamson Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Doris Williamson Blankenship of Williamson, W. Va.; daughters, Tina (R.P.) Tyndal of Live Oaks, Fla., Phyllis (Matthew) Suter of South Williamson, Ky., Mary (Jimmy) Fields of Williamson, W. Va. and Brittany Blankenship of the home; brother, Woodrow Blankenship of Williamson, W. Va.; sisters, Shelby Hensdale of East Bend, N.C., Brenda McMahon of Indiana, Julie Thistle of Florida, Patricia Hatfield of Red Jacket, W. Va. and Priscilla Gooslin of Ransom, Ky.; and ten grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 17, 2004, 11 a.m., at East Williamson Baptist Church with Donnie Ratcliffe officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. View Memory Gardens at Maher, W. Va. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held after 6 p.m. Tuesday and anytime on Wednesday at the funeral home with services each evening at 7 p.m. with Jim Ed Whitt officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler, Ky.

Robert Edward Armstrong

Robert "Boo" Edward Armstrong, 67, of 720 East 4th Ave., Williamson, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at Cabell Huntington Hospital.

He was born Dec. 26, 1936, at Williamson, a son of the late James and Cathryn Lawrence Armstrong.

A U.S. Army veteran, he was a member of the 2nd Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in East Williamson and graduate of Liberty High School.

Survivors include two daughters, Adriane Armstrong and Deidre "Dee Dee" Armstrong, both of Cleveland, Ohio; two brothers, James (Bertha) Armstrong Jr. of Columbus, Ohio and Robin (Stephanie) Armstrong of Beckley; special friends, Mr. and Mrs. Holbert Tucker, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Childress and Mr. and Mrs. Keith Gregory, all of Williamson; and Mr. and Mrs. John Dooley of Columbus, Ohio; God-sister, Lois Wells of Huntington; special cousin, Alice Belcher Anderson; four nieces; two nephews; four great-nieces; one great nephew; two grandchildren, Da'Vell and Da'Vonte Armstrong, both of Columbus, Ohio.

Funeral services will be conducted at noon, Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at 1st Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. L.C. Howard, the Rev. Ricky Wilkerson; and the Rev. G.C. Childress officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. View Memory Gardens at Maher.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. until noon prior to services Tuesday.

Relatives and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Mack Cisco II

Mack Kenna Cisco II, 54, of Thacker, died Friday, June 4, 2004, at Pikeville Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 7, 1949, he was a son of the late Mack Kenna and Delcie Jude Cisco.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five infant sister and two infant brothers.

Survivors include: His wife, Eveleen Bailey Cisco; two sons, Mack Kenna Cisco III (Debbie Smith Cisco) of Kimper, Ky., and Albert Sidney Cisco (Kimberly Warren Cisco) of Blackberry City; four daughters, Mitzi Cisco Farley (Shawn) of Delbarton; Charlene Cisco Owens (Phillip) of Oil Springs, Ky.; Michelle Cisco (Ronnie Runyon) and Delcie Cisco, both of Thacker; a brother, David Allen Cisco Sr. (Cindy Smith Cisco) of McAndrews, Ky.; and 10 grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are scheduled for noon Monday, June 7, 2004, at the Chambers Funeral Services Chapel, Matewan, with Rev. Hiram Justice officiating.

Burial will follow in the Cisco cemetery #2, Thacker Hollow, Thacker.

Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Sunday, June 6, 2004, at the chapel with services at 7 p.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of Chambers Funeral Services.

James Church

James Harold Church, 72, of Williamson, died Friday, June 4, 2004, at Williamson Memorial Hospital, Williamson.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced later by Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry, Ky.

Minnie Jeffrey

Ms. Minnie Aline Butcher Jeffrey, 71, of Columbus, Ohio, died at 2 p.m. on May 23, 2004.

She was the daughter of the late Andrew Butcher and Eula Murphy Butcher of Delbarton, W. Va. She was born May 23, 1933, at Chattaroy, W. Va.

Ms. Jeffrey is preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Ida May Errigo of New York City; one brother, Thomas M. Butcher of Ragland, W. Va.;.

She is survived by one daughter, Becky Cooney of Dayton, Ohio; two sons, Mike and Douglas Adams of Columbus, Ohio; five grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Judy Hall, Susie Copley, Linda Fletcher, all of Delbarton, W. Va., Wanda DeLong of Ohio; brothers, Gary Richard Butcher of Columbus, Ohio, Andrew Butcher Jr. of Alabama.

Family and friends may call at the Ragland Freewill Baptist Church at Ragland, W. Va. on Friday, June 18, 2004, from 6 - 10 p.m. Services will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 19, 2004 Burial will follow at the Marcum cemetery at Lincoln City at 2 p.m.

Fern Chafin

Fern Porter Chafin, 67, of Kermit, W. Va., passed away Monday, June 14, 2004, at her residence.

Born August 5, 1936, in Mingo County, W. Va., to the late Pleas and Edith Murphy Porter, she was a homemaker.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Wilford "Bill" Porter; and sisters, Helen Stroud, Ruth Maynard and Nellie Wolf.

Surviving are her husband, Billy Chafin of Kermit, W. Va.; sons, Millard Chafin of Kermit, W. Va., Crit Hall of Kermit, W. Va. and Paul N. Horn of Kermit, W. Va.; daughters, Juanita Deskins of Georgetown, Ky., Helen Johnson of Georgetown, Ky., Lottie Hall of Bluefield, W. Va., Abbigail Stake of South Carolina, Mary Davis of Chattaroy, W. Va. and Sondra Gale Chafin of Kermit, W. Va.; brothers, Luther Porter of Inez, Ky., Lum Porter of Inez, Ky., Albert Porter of Inez, Ky. and Leonard Porter of Lawrence Co., Ky.; sisters, Callie Fletcher of Inez, Ky., Marcella Cook of Inez, Ky., Judy Maynard of Inez, Ky.; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 17, 2004, 11 a.m., at Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home, Warfield, Ky., with Rev. Mose Brewer officiating. Burial will follow at the Chafin cemetery, Kermit, W. Va.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 15, 2004, after 6 p.m. at Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home, Warfield, Ky.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home, Inez, Ky.

Allen Cockerham

Allen Stanley Cockerham, 100, of Spring Lake, N.C., formerly of Wheeling, W. Va., passed away Sunday, June 13, 2004, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center of Fayetteville, N.C.

Mr. Cockerham was a World War II veteran. He was a retired machinist and formerly worked for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and Bloch Brothers Company. He was an avid bowler and a member of the American Legion Post 230 in Spring Lake.

Surviving are his daughters, Margaret A. Stigall of Greensboro, N.C. and Constance L. Moore of Pinehurst, N.C.; son, Robert A. Cockerham of Spring Lake, N.C.; five grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 17, 2004, 11 a.m. at Adcock Funeral Home Chapel, Spring Lake, N.C. with Rev. Roy McLamb. Burial will follow at Sandhills State Veterans cemetery, Spring Lake, N.C.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 16, 2004, 7 - 9 p.m., at Adcock Funeral Home.

James Church

James Harold Church, 72, of Williamson, died Friday, June 4, 2004, at Williamson Memorial Hospital, Williamson.

Born March 5, 1932, in Pike County, Ky., he was a son of the late Allen and Arthelia B. Church.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Church was preceded in death by four sisters, Dolly D. Church, Dorothy Mae Smith, Geraldine Swigert and Mildred Church; two brothers, Delbert Church and Welbert Church; two uncles, Charles W. Wallace and Bill Pettigrew and one grandchild.

He was employed by the Kentucky Department of Highways for Pike and Martin counties and of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his ex-wife, Dayphene Church of Williamson; four sons, Grover Allen (Rhonda) Church of Hardy, Ky.; James Harmon Church of Williamson; William Howard (Vickie) Church of Sidney, Ky., and Thomas D. Church of Richmond, Ky.; six sisters, Martha E. Mashburn and Oma S. Church, both of Oklahoma City, Okla.; Bonnie F. Church, Norwalk, Ohio; Thelma J. Wallace of Georgetown, Texas; Eula Jane Pettigrew of Stillwell, Okla., and Argatha P. (John) Austin of Moore, Okla.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m., Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at the Rogers Funeral Home chapel, Belfry, Ky., with Tommy Powers officiating.

Burial will follow in the Church cemetery at Canada, Ky.

Family members and friends will serve pallbearers.

Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Monday, June 7, 2004, at the funeral home chapel.

Arrangements are under the direction of Rogers Funeral Home.

Minnie Jeffrey

Ms. Minnie Aline Butcher Jeffrey, 71, of Columbus, Ohio, died at 2 p.m. on May 23, 2004.
