Evelyn Baisden

Evelyn Baisden, 92, of Little Dove, W. Va., passed away Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at her residence.

Born January 30, 1912, in Little Dove, to the late E.E. Dempsey and Lummie Vernatter Dempsey, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Baisden was a member of Baisdentown Church of God.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Lee Baisden; brothers, Lawrence, Luther, Charles, Warren and Henry Dempsey; sisters, Dorothy Blackburn and Joan Eckart; and sons, Ewell E., Keither and Walter Lee Baisden Jr.

Surviving are her daughter, Betty Coleman of Little Dove; sisters, Cindy Miller, Virginia Baribeau and Arva Reynolds; nine grandchildren; and several great and great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 18, 2004, 11 a.m., at Weaver Mortuary with Elder Jimmy Maynard officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. View Memory Gardens, Maher, W. Va. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held Thursday evening, June 17, 2004, 6 - 9 p.m., at the mortuary.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Weaver Mortuary of West Williamson.

Pauline Browning

Pauline Browning, 60, of Shallotte, N.C., formerly of the Delbarton area, passed away Sunday, June 13, 2004 of smoke inhalation due to a fire at her home.

She was born July 29, 1943 at Puritan, W. Va., the daughter of the late Dan and Ruby Browning. She was a member of the Shallotte Church of God. She was preceded in death by a sister, Jeanette Browning.

Her survivors include brothers, Dallas and wife Rosie Browning, John and wife Glenda Browning, a twin brother Albert and wife June Gail Browning, and Dan Jr. and wife Glenna Browning; her sisters, Edna Ferrell, Lorraine and husband Pearly Sammons, Alice Corrine and husband Johnny Mahone, Irene Copley, Billie Jo and husband Carl Maynard and Anna Rose Browning; her children, Michael and wife Christy Walker, Bruce and wife Paula Walker, Paulette and husband David Degrood, and Steven and wife Christy Walker; nine grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. She is also survived by a special uncle, Paul Nicholas of Chattaroy, W. Va.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, June 18, 2004, at 11 a.m. at the Shallotte Church of God, Shallotte, N.C.

Arrangements are under the direction of Covle-Ward Funeral Home.

Eva Starr

Eva Starr, 81, of Delbarton, W. Va., passed away June 7, 2004, at the home of her daughter.

She was born February 28, 1923 at Belo, W. Va. She was the daughter of the late Richard and Julia Starr Runyon.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Bert Ran Starr; a son, Otis Starr; son-in-law, William E. Brewer Jr.; a daughter, Linda Brewer Horn; and brothers, Ike, Jim, Aaron and Mose Runyon.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Belo Community Church of God.

Survivors include her son, Ike and wife Loretta Starr of Tennessee; son-in-law, Eugene Horn of Ohio; daughters, Eliza and husband James Thompson of Belo, W. Va., Helen and husband Tom Fisher of Charleston, W. Va. and Alice and husband James Adkins of Hell Creek, W. Va.; 25 grandchildren; 47 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Duncan Fork United Baptist Church Thursday afternoon June 10, 2004 at 2 p.m., with the Elders Eddie Layne and Calvin Copley officiating. Burial will follow in the Runyon cemetery at Below, W. Va. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be at the church Wednesday evening after 5 p.m. with services starting at 7 p.m.

Chafin Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Orville Allen Jr.

Orville Lee (Hoss) Allen Jr., 38, of Christian, W. Va., passed away Friday, June 4, 2004, at his residence.

Born July 13, 1965, in Welch, W. Va., to Orville Allen Sr. and Shirley Marie Copley Allen of Christian, W. Va.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 10, 2004, 1 p.m., at Mounts Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Barry Brooks and Rev. Lowell Walls officiating. Burial will follow at Verner cemetery, Verner, W. Va.

Friends may call Mounts Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 9, 2004, from 6 - 9 p.m.

Mounts Funeral Home of Gilbert, W. Va., is in charge of arrangements.

Clifford Bevins

Clifford Bevins, 73, of Williamson, W. Va., formerly of South Williamson, Ky., passed away Thursday, June 17, 2004, at Mingo Manor Nursing Home.

Born July 30, 1930, in Williamson, W. Va., to the late Albert Bevins Sr. and Bertha Davis Bevins, he worked for the former Allen Funeral Home in Williamson. Mr. Bevins was a member of the Turkey Creek Freewill Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Albert Bevins Jr. and Nelmon Bevins; sisters, Alberta, Loretta, Faye and Izetta Bevins, Josephine Barker and Hazel Sellards.

Surviving are his son, Kenneth Lee Bevins of Chicago, Ill.; sisters, Emma Lou Carter of South Williamson, Ky., Iretta Chapman of Williamson, W. Va., Etta (William) McCoy of Lincolnton, N.C., Delma Surber of Lincolnton, N.C. and Betty Jean (Howard) Shadd of Fitchburg, Mass. Also surviving are a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 21, 2004, 12 noon, at Hatfield Funeral Chapel with Bro. Jimmy Stanley officiating. Burial will follow at Bent Ridge cemetery at Meta, Ky. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held after 6 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler, Ky.

Arlene Hatfield

Arlene Hatfield, 78, of Matewan, W. Va., passed away Thursday, June 17, 2004, at South Williamson ARH Skilled Nursing Facility.

Born May 17, 1926, in Blackberry City, W. Va., to the late David Jude and Stella Mae Butler Jude, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Hatfield was a member of the Enon United Baptist Church.

Surviving are his son, David Lee Hatfield (Vicki) of Forest Hills, Ky.; Robert Hatfield of Blackberry City, W. Va. and Jimmy Dean Hatfield (Jacki) of Williamson, W. Va.; daughters, Debbie Stafford (Wayne) of Kopperston, W. Va. and Sherry Stump (Kelly) of Buskirk, Ky.; brothers, Dallas Jude (Geri) of Blackberry City, W. Va., Harold Jude (Gloria) of Blackberry City, W. Va. and Melbourne Jude (Brenda) of Blackberry City, W. Va.; sister, Betty Blankenship (Jimmy) of Columbus, Ohio; special friend, Marie Robinette; 12 grandchildren, Carrie, Jill, Kimberly, Christine, James, Jack, David, Robert, Jeremy Robert, Charla, Josh and Shane; and two great grandchildren, Ethan and Sidney.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 21, 2004, 11 a.m., at Chambers Funeral Services' Chapel with Rev. Carl Butler officiating. Burial will follow at Blackberry City cemetery at Blackberry City, W. Va. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will b held from 6 - 9 p.m. Sunday, June 20, 2004, at the Chapel.

Arrangements are under the direction of Chambers Funeral Home, Inc., of Matewan, W. Va.

Wilma Stephens

Wilma Estella Stephens, 87, of Mallory, W. Va., passed away Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at Guyan Valley Hospital, Logan, W. Va.

She was born May 6, 1917, in Man, W. Va., to the late Alfred and Sarah Aliff Belcher.

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 11, 2004, 1 p.m., at Mounts Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Jackie Grimmett and Rev. Lacy Cox Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memory Gardens, Pecks Mill, W. Va.

Friends may call Mounts Funeral Home on Thursday, June 10, 2004, from 6 - 9 p.m.

Dollie Canterbury

Dollie Violet Canterbury, 50, of Lenore, passed away Saturday, July 31, 2004, at her residence.

She was a daughter of the late Ance and Sarah Ruth Hollandsworth Perry.

Mrs. Canterbury was a secretary with the Mingo County Board of Education and was a member of the Parsley Bottom Baptist Church, and the Eastern Starr.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in by one brother, James "Jimbo" Lawrence Perry.

Survivors include her husband, James Canterbury; two sons, James (Carla) Orville Marcum of Louisa, Ky., Melvin Charles Canterbury of Lenore; one daughter, Tammy Carol Marcum of Lexington, Ky.; one brother, Charles (Kay) Ance Perry of Huntington; two sisters, Polly (Richard) Blackburn of Lexington, and Alverda Perry of Lenore; one grandchild, James Orville Marcum II.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at the Parsley Bottom Freewill Baptist Church with the Rev. Wayne Runyon officiating.

Burial will follow in the Canterbury cemetery, Right Fork of Laurel Creek.

Pallbearers will be nephews, William Thomas and Gary Dwayne Canterbury, Shane, Scott and James Welby Perry, and Michael Blackburn.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Webb, John Caponite, John Smith and William Smith Jr.

Friends may call from 6 until 9 p.m., at the church, Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Chafin Funeral Home, Delbarton.

Sylvia France

Sylvia Hattie (Mills) France, 78, of Varney, passed away Friday, July 30, 2004, at Appalachian Regional Hospital in South Williamson, Ky.

She was born Jan. 20, 1926, at Thacker, a daughter of the late Randolph and Nancy Mahon Mills.

She was a homemaker and of the Church of God faith.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Oscar Mills, Eugene Mills and Walter Elswick; one sister, Lovella Charles; one grandchild, Danny Ray Hensley.

Survivors include two sons, David France of Columbus, Ohio and Langley (Inez) France of Varney; three daughters, Shirley (Harvey) Collins, Lovella (Ray) Reed of Lovely, Ky., and Nancy (Charles) Hensley of Varney; one brother, Bufford Randolph Mills of Long Beach, Ca.; one sister, Shirley McClanahan of Newton; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, at Chafin Funeral Home, Delbarton with brother Ravin Fields Jr., officiating.

Burial will follow in the Arlington Field of Honor in Canal Winchester, Ohio, Thursday, Aug. 4, 2004.

Friends may call from 6 until 9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Chafin Funeral Home.

Dorothy Smith

Dorothy V. Smith, 78, of Williamson, died Friday, July 30, 2004, at her residence.

She was born July 30, 2004, at Saltville, Va., a daughter of the late Frank and Bertha Hoover Null.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Frank F. Smith; one son, William Eugene Null; one brother Bill Null; and one grandson.

She was a homemaker and attended the East Williamson Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Johnny (Mary K.) Thompson of Williamson and Mrs. Jesse (Sandra Jean) Harris of Durham, N.C.; two brothers, Hugh Null of Texas and Jack Null of Kansas; four sisters, Geneva Boardwine of Virginia, Sarah Mitchem of North Carolina, Mary Hendershot of Ohio and Helen Daniels of Tennessee; three grandchildren, Christopher (Katrina) Eugene Smith and Franklin Douglas Harris, both of Durham, N.C., and Rebecca Marie Thompson of Williamson; two great-grandchildren, Lauren Virginia and Christopher Eugene Smith Jr., of North Carolina.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, at East Williamson Baptist Church with the Rev. Ron Sanger officiating.

Burial will follow in Mt. View Memory Gardens at Huddy, Ky.

Pallbearers will be Mike Blackburn, P.J. Scott, Dallas McGinnis, Tommy Castle, Doug Harris and Chris Smith.

Friends may call from 6 until 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, at the mortuary.
