Jean Hardin

Jean Hardin, 72, of War Eagle, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at Cocke County Baptist Hospital in Newport, Tenn.

She was born March 13, 1932, in Buchanan County, Va., a daughter of the late Ranse and Maggie Justice Elswick.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, at War Eagle Church of God with the Rev. Steve May officiating.

Burial will follow in Star Hollow cemetery at War Eagle.

Mounts Funeral Home in Gilbert is in charge of arrangements.

Donald Varney

Donald L. Varney, 65, of Pataskala, Ohio, departed this life and went to be with his Lord and Savior on August 16, 2004.

Born to the late William and Parlee (Justice) Varney on October 13, 1938 in Delbarton, W. Va., he retired after 30 years service at AT&T.

He was an active member of The Columbus United Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon, and he was a member and past master of Pataskala Masonic Lodge #404 F&AM.

Surviving are his wife of 48 years Glenna Faye (Kirk) Varney; daughter and son-in-law Teressa and Robert Gault; one granddaughter Dawn; brother Clayburn Varney; sisters Mintie (Raymond) Gilman, Dolly Fay Baisden, and Glenna Sue (Neal) Robinson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by brothers James, John and Ronald Varney and sister Margaret Sleeper.

Friends may call at Kauber-Miller Funeral Home, Pataskala on Wednesday, August 18, 2004 from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. with Rev. Joe Sparks, Rev. Frank Dials, and Rev. Bill Baisden officiating. Burial will follow at Pataskala cemetery.

Betty Woolum
Betty Lea Woolum, 72, of Oceana, W. Va., died Friday, Aug. 6, 2004, at her Crouches Farm residence.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at the Family Praise and Worship Center, Oceana, with Pastor Timmy Brewster and the Revs. David Johnson, and Randall Staton officiating. Burial will follow in the Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny, W. Va.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., Monday, Aug. 9, at the church.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Mounts Funeral Home of Gilbert.

George Stanley
George H. Stanley, 80, of Williamson died Friday, Aug. 6, 2004, at the Williamson Memorial Hospital.

He was born Dec. 24, 1923, in Sidney, Ky., a son of the late Albert and Mary Ball Stanley. He had been a member of the Leckieville Freewill Baptist Church since April 29, 1956. He was a parking meter repairman for the city of Williamson for many years and was retired from the N&W Railroad with 40 years of service. He was also active in scouting for many years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Dolores Patterson Stanley; one sister, Sela Cochran; and three brothers, Floyd Stanley, Jeff Stanley and James Fish..

He is survived by one son, Mitchell Stanley and his wife Ann of Williamson; six brothers, Daniel (Darlene) Stanley, Sidney, Kent (Teresa) Stanley, Noah (Connie) Stanley, Bob (Susie) Fish of North Baltimore, Ohio, and Lloyd (Betty) Fish of Huntington, Ind.; and five sisters, Ann Knight of Hamtramck, Mich., Carman J. (Charles) Edwards of Newark, Ohio, Anita (Eddie) Williamson of Sidney, Myrtle Marie Stanley (Chris) Step, and Helen Trace of Columbus, Ohio.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at the Weaver Mortuary, West Williamson, with the Revs. Charles Edwards and Lonnie Francis officiating. Burial will be in the Stanley Family cemetery, Brown's Branch, Dix Fork, Sidney.

Family, friends and members of the church will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Monday, Aug. 9, at the mortuary.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Weaver Mortuary.

Ruby Mahon

Ruby P. Mahon, age 67, of Varney, W. Va., passed away Tuesday, August 17, 2004, in the Heritage Hall - Laurel Fork in Laurel Fork, Va.

Born April 26, 1937, in Glen Alum, W. Va., to Charlie Daniels and the late Eunice Bachannon Daniels, she was a homemaker.

Mrs. Mahon was a member of the Devon Church of Christ.

In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Joe Mahon; daughter, Brenda Mae Mahon; brothers, Burgess and Charles Daniels; and sister, Janie Bennett.

Surviving are her father, Charlie Daniels of Taylorville, W. Va.; brothers, Franklin D. Daniels of Hillsville, Va., Jerry Daniels of Max Meadows, Va., Russell Daniels of Bland, Va., Kelly Daniels of Swords Creek, Va., Harold Daniels of Bramwell, W. Va., Arnold Daniels of Hillsboro, Ohio and Jason Virgil Daniels of Taylorville, W. Va.; and sisters, Easter Mahon of Taylorville, W. Va. and Nellie Craps of Portsmouth, Va.

Funeral services will be held Friday, August 20, 2004, 1 p.m., at Devon Church of Christ with Evangelist Albert Mahon, Evangelist Lewis Smith and Evangelist Tommy Estepp officiating.

Burial will follow at Mahon cemetery at Beech Creek, W. Va. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held after 5 p.m. Thursday at Devon Church of Chris with open casket viewing from 5 - 6 p.m. only Special services will be held at 7 p.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler, Ky.

Fred Zornes

Fred Zornes, 94, of Belo, W. Va., passed away Tuesday, November 30, 2004, in the Appalachian Regional Healthcare Facility.

He was born February 14, 1910 in Wayne County, W. Va. He was the son of the late Jerry and Nancy Jane Bowe Zornes.

He was also preceded in death by a son, Ison Roy (Buddy) Zornes; brothers, John, Carl and Zeek Zornes; sisters, Elizabeth Cyrus and Laura Hurley.

He was a retired coal miner and a member of the Little Dove United Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mattie Baisden Zornes; a son, Randy (Bobbie) Zornes of Williamson, W. Va.; daughters, Nora Jane Stapleton of Scottown, Ohio, Tobey Tiller and Lori (Tommy) Messer both of Belo, W. Va.; grandchildren, Jerry Stapleton, Nora Griffing, Mary, Patty and Thelma Zornes, Terri and Evelyn Zornes, Christopher Tiller and Michael and Zachary Messer.

Funeral services will be held at the home of the deceased at Day Star Road, Belo, W. Va., Friday morning, December 3, 2004, at 11 a.m. with the Elder Eddie Layne officiating. Burial will follow in the Zornes Family cemetery.

Visitation will be at the home of the deceased Thursday evening after 5 p.m. with services starting at 7 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Forrest McCoy, Randy Zornes, Christopher Tiller and R.C. Yates. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Lucas, Tommy Bryant, Paul McCoy and Tommy Messer.

The family would like to express thanks and appreciation to special friends Ann Lucas and Brenda Messer, Chafin Funeral Home, and the nurses and staff of the ARH Hospital.

Mrs. Clemma Smith Rotilio

Mrs. Clemma Smith Rotilio, 76, passed away Sunday, November 28, 2004, at High Point Place, High Point, N.C.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 1, 2004, at Guilford Memorial Park with Pastor Barney Law officiating.

Clemma was born September 8, 1928, in Ransom, Ky. to the late App and Jennie Smith. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

Mrs. Rotilio is survived by her husband of 47 years, Joseph Rotilio, Sr. of High Point, N.C.; son, Joseph Rotilio, Jr. and wife Connie of Greensboro, N.C; daughter, Karen S. Scott and husband Mike of Churchill, Tenn.; grandson, William Craig Dotson of Rome, Ga.; granddaughters, Katrina Lynn Owens of Kingsport, Tenn., Ashley Renea Rotilio of High Point, N.C.; step-grandchildren, Allison M. Haigler of Raleigh, N.C., Michael D. Scott, Jr. of Mt. Carmel, Tenn., Amy Lynn Charles of Phelps, Ky.; great grandchildren, Arianna Karin Dotson of North Las Vegas, Nev., Kaley Brooke Rotilio of High Point, N.C., Alexis Hope Cabe of Thomasville, N.C., Jaiden Craig Dotson of Rome, Ga.; step-great grandchildren, Uniqua and Kapreese Smith of Rome, Ga.; sister, Wilma Carol Achatz of St. Augustine, Fla.; brothers, Francis J. Smith of Ransom, Ky., Leonard H. Smith of High Point, N.C., Darryl Ray Smith of Thomasville, N.C.; James York Smith of Lexington, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews and a host of friends and neighbors.

The family will receive friends from 7 - 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel, 6000 High Point Road, Greensboro, N.C., 27407.

Joel D. Moore

Mr. Joel D. Moore, 76, of Hope, Arkansas, passed away Saturday, November 27, 2004, in Medical Park Hospital, Hope, Arkansas.

He was born September 12, 1928, in Williamson, WV.Va., to Toliver P. "T.P." Moore and Edna Ann Oglesby Moore, who moved to Williamson from Elberton, Georgia in the 1920's.

Mr. Moore was a graduate of Williamson High School. He had been a member of the First Baptist Church of Williamson, W. Va., prior to his move to Michigan, where he worked for Chrysler Corporation for many years before retiring to Arkansas. He was a Korean War veteran, and served in both the Army and Air Force. He was always interested in airplanes and aviation and owned several planes. He piloted his own plane until recently.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Lorraine Moore (Sam) Carlton; a brother, T.P. Moore, Jr.; two nieces; Libby Carlton (Jim) Blackburn; Marie Moore (Jan) Piela, one great-niece, Tiiffany Paige Taylor, and one great-great niece, Victoria Langford.

He is survived by one brother, George (Mary) Moore of Hacienda Heights, California; wife, Vera; daughter, Jody Lorraine (Rev. Jason) Kendrick; step-daughters Marilyn Triplett and Deborah Ann (Scott) Fleming; step-son David (Julie) Bainbrige; 14 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren.

Local survivors include the following nieces and nephews who remember him as a loving, patient uncle: Robert Carlton and Carol Carlton, of Williamson, W. Va., Jennifer Carlton Reynolds of Pikeville, Ky.; Neal Moore, Virginia (Moore) Givens, and Barbara Moore (Ralph) Taylor, of the Millwood, W. Va. area. He is survived by two other nephews: George Moore, Jr. of Galloping Hills, California, and Alan Moore of Carson City, Nevada. In addition, he is survived by nineteen great-nieces and nephews, 18 great-great nieces and nephews, and one great-great-great niece.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, December 1, 2004, from 1 to 9 p.m. at Voran Funeral Home, 23750 Goddard Rd., Taylor, Michigan. Services will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, December 2, 2004 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Edward Crider and Rev. Jason Kendrick, his son-in-law, officiating. Burial will follow in Michigan Memorial cemetery, Huron, Michigan.

Ruby Johnson
Ruby Sylvia McGraw Johnson, 72, of Gilbert, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, at Morganton, N.C.

She was born May 18, 1932, at Isaban, W. Va., the daughter of the late Lafe and Sarah Hatfield Cline.

Mrs. Johnson was also preceded in death by four brothers, Johnce Cline, Hosie Cline, Burb Cline and Monroe Cline; five sisters, Lydia Surber, Virginia Stevens, Barbara Mitchell, Essie Cline and Nellie Cline.

She was a member of the Horsepen Southern Baptist Church at Horsepen, W. Va.

Survivors include her husband, Isom Johnson, Sr.; two daughters, Regena (James) Sloan of Gilbert, W. Va., and Rita (Gregory) Berry of Morganton, N.C.; one son, Bobby (Donna) McGraw of Princeton, W. Va.; special granddaughter, Tessa Johnson of Morganton, N.C.; four grandchildren, Jamie Sloan, Jeremy Sloan, Rachael Berry and Natasha New; two great-grandchildren, Haley New and Brennon Sloan.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, at the Horsepen Southern Baptist Church at Horsepen, W. Va. with the Rev. Frank Rowe officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens at Matheny, W. Va.

Friends may call from 6 until 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, at the Mounts Funeral Home Chapel at Gilbert, W. Va.

George Ford, Jr.
George Wesley Ford, Jr., 78, of Beckley, W. Va., formerly of Oceana, W. Va., passed into eternity on Tuesday, November 30, 2004.

Born July 30, 1926 at Davy, W. Va., he was the son of the late George Wesley Ford, Sr. and the late Rebekah Bradbury Ford.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Ruby Brown Ford; a son, Stephen Wesley Ford of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a grandson, Ryan Wesley Ford of West Palm Beach; a granddaughter, Kelly Victoria Ford of Austin, Tex.; and two sisters, Agnes Ford Short of Clear Fork, W. Va. and Maude Ford Johnson of Colorado Springs, Col. George also leaves many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews to mourn his passing and a host of friends he made over the years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a nephew, Ronald Lee Johnson, who died in Vietnam.

George was known to many of his friends as G.W. The doctor at his birth pronounced him too sickly to live, but his mother refused to let him die and quickly nursed him to health. After attending Oceana High School for several years, George went to Norfolk to complete his education and work. Moving back to West Virginia after the war, he drove a taxi in Williamson, W. Va., where he met his future wife. He attended and received a two-year degree from Bluefield Business School. After marriage, he and Ruby ran a small general store in Clear Fork, but in 1954 he went to work at the Kopperston tipple run by Eastern Coal Corporation. George worked there until 1982 when he retired.

George was always ready to help anyone in need and never met a stranger. A life-long Democrat, he served all citizens of Wyoming County as one of their Commissioners from 1980-1992. He led the drive that restored fiscal stability to county administration and was respected at all levels for his honesty, openness and hard work. He and Ruby loved to welcome family and friends to their home at Smith Mountain Lake, where he taught generations of children to fish and water ski.

G.W. was raised in the Clear Fork Advent Christian Church and joined the Calloway Heights Baptist Church after moving to Beckley in 1999. He also was a long time member of the Masons and the Rotary Club.

The family will receive visitors at the Evans Memorial Chapel, Oceana, W. Va., from 6 - 9 p.m. Thursday, December 2, 2004. The funeral will be held in the chapel on Friday, December 3, 2004 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Bill Parker officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny, W. Va.

Gene Short, Lonnie Lusk, Frank Shrewsbury, Ryan Ford, Jason Shrewsbury, L.D. Brown, Charles Brown and Keith Blankenship will serve as pallbearers.

The family wishes to thank the caregivers that helped G.W. over the last few months and to thank Appalachian Regional Hospital, the Hospice of Southern West Virginia, and Dr. and Mrs. Bhalodi for their compassion and care.

Evans Funeral Home, Oceana, W. Va., is serving the Ford family.

Ethel Johnson
Ethel Parsley Johnson, 80, of Penrose, N.C., formerly of Kermit, W. Va., passed away Monday, November 29, 2004, at Penrose, N.C.

Born March 11, 1924, to the late Wayne Parsley and Rosa Fields Parsley, she was a homemaker and a member of Freewill Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband who died in 1991, Robert Johnson; a daughter, Pauline Ferguson; a stepson, Bryant Johnson; a sister, Hazel Perry; and two brothers, Albert Parsley and Birdie Parsley.

Surviving are her five daughters, Loucresia Waller of Kermit, W. Va., Juanita Mathis of N.C., Ledonna Messer of Columbus, Ohio, Grethel Hooper of N.C. and Rebecca Frye of Wayne, W. Va.; four sons, Archie Johnson of Kermit, W. Va., Arvil Johnson of Fort Gay, W. Va., Danny Johnson and Roger Johnson both of Kermit, W. Va.; three sisters, Ora Fields, Ellen Horn and Daisy Fields all of Kermit, W. Va.; a brother, Joe Marcum of Kermit, W. Va.; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, December 3, 2004, 1 p.m., at Marrowbone Church of God in Jesus Christ with Bro. Paul Messer officiating. Burial will follow at the Frank Fitch cemetery at Marrowbone, W. Va.

Friends may call anytime Thursday and until time of service at the church.

Karsten Armstrong
Karsten Luke Armstrong, 4-month-old son of Thomas Anthony and Daphne Rae Armstrong, passed away Tuesday, November 30, 2004, at his home.

He was born July 22, 2004 at Cabell Huntington Hospital.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his maternal grandparents, Leonard and Linda Kay Vance of Kermit, W. Va.; paternal grandparents, Leonard Mae Scott and Carl Scott and Duke L. Armstrong and Elaine Wiard; paternal great-grandmother, Gertrude Bennett; maternal great-grandmother, Garnet Mae Hannah; sisters, Haley Brianna Armstrong and Hannah Marie Armstrong, both of the home; aunt, Billie Jo Armstrong (James) Ermalovich; uncles, Bruce (Tawnya) Vance, Jeffery (Tonya) Vance, and Joshua (Rhonda) Vance; and cousins, David Fields, Adreana Vance, Madison Vance and Anthony Ermalovich.

Funeral services will be held Friday, December 3, 2004, 1 p.m., at Stoney Hill Baptist Church, Stonecoal, W. Va. with Ken Allen and Fred Lovins officiating. Burial will follow at Hannah cemetery, Big Laurel Branch, Marrowbone, W. Va.

Visitation will be held after 1 p.m. Thursday at the Stoney Hill Baptist Church, Stonecoal, W. Va.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home, Inez, Ky.
