Ellen Riggan
Ellen Jannette Catalan Riggan, 66, died Wednesday, February 23, 2005 in Riverside Walter Reed Hospital.

She was a native of Wayne County, W. Va.

Survivors include: her husband of 47 years, Robert Daniel Riggan; her children, Winifred Dawn Riggan of Ark, Va.; Robert Daniel Riggan II of Fredericksburg, Va. and William Edward Riggan of Cumming, Ga.; her sisters, Beverly Norman and Sharon Ramey; her brother, Robert Ball; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and a very special friend, Robert A. Brown.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2005 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Andrews Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Newington Baptist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, February 25, 2005 from 7 p.m. ­ 8:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Mrs. G. Edward Mowry, 7274 Joseph Lewis Road, Hayes, Va. 23702 or to the Disabled American Veterans.

Arrangements are under the direction of Andrews Funeral Home, Gloucester, Va.

Harmon Gilman Sr.
Harmon Gilman Sr., 83, of Taylorville, W. Va., died Tuesday, February 22, 2005 at Williamson Memorial Hospital, Williamson, W. Va.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 26, 2005 at the Duncan Fork United Baptist Church, Upper Sheppardstown exit with Rev. Johnny Ray Dempsey and Rev. Joaquine Ooten officiating.

Burial will follow in the Dempsey and Mahon cemetery at the Left Fork of Duncan Fork.

Friends may call at the Duncan Fork United Baptist Church after 6 p.m. on Friday, February 25, 2005.

Arrangements are under the direction of Mounts Funeral Home, Gilbert, W. Va.

Nola Mae Lovich
Nola Mae Cline Lovich, 83, of Justice, W. Va., died Tuesday, February 22, 2005 at the Logan Regional Medical Center, Logan, W. Va.

Born December 11, 1921 at Tamcliffe, W. Va., she was a daughter of the late Jessie and Susan Cline Cline.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Lovich was preceded in death by her husband, Nick Lovich; a daughter, Norma Jean Addair and a brother, Mack Cline.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Justice Tabernacle Church, Justice, W. Va.

Survivors include: a son, Scotty (Teresa) Lovich of Wharncliffe, W. Va.; two daughters, Alice Morgan (Steve) Trusty of Mooresville, Ind. and Rose (Roger) Stafford of Wharncliffe, W. Va.; a sister, Lois (Fred) Bailey of Rockhouse, W. Va.; seven grandchildren, Angie (Jerry) Mills of Mooresville, Ind.; Lenny (Tina) Addair of Camby, Ind.; Scott Morgan of Aurora, Ill.; Ryan Morgan of Plainfield, Ind; Chris Stafford of Hanover, W. Va.; Nickie Lovich and Courtney Lovich, both of Wharncliffe, W. Va.; five great-grandchildren, Jarrod and Kim Addair of Camby, Ind.; Amy and Katie Bug Mills of Mooresville, Ind. and Tarria Lovich of Wharncliffe, W. Va. and a special niece, Geneva Harper of Verner, W. Va.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 25, 2005 at the Justice Tabernacle Church with Rev. Randall Staton officiating.

Burial will follow in the Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny, W. Va.

Grandsons and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call at the Justice Tabernacle Church Friday, February 25, 2005 from 6 p.m. ­ 10 p.m.

Sandy Hannah
Mrs. Sandy Hannah, 44, of Chapmanville, W. Va., was born on June 9, 1960, daughter of the late Ezra G. and Inez S. Barker Meadows. She departed this life on Thursday, February 3, 2005, at her residence. Sandy was a member of Chapmanville Church of Christ.

She is survived by the following: her husband, John Hannah; two children, Andrea T. and J. Jacob Hannah, both of the home; six sisters, Margaret (Troy) Butcher of Brunswick, Ohio, Peggy Bryant of Chapmanville, W. Va., Janice Perez of Columbus, Ohio, Claudia (Roy) McLeod of Akron, Ohio, Carol Beckner of Pecks Mill, W. Va. and Linda Chapman and Wanda (Doug) Smith of Garretts Fork, W. Va.; one brother, Glenn (Sandy) Meadows of Garretts Fork, W. Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday at Evans Funeral Home at Chapmanville, W. Va. with Mr. James H. Farley, minister, officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memory Gardens, Godby, W. Va. Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Friends may call between 6 and 9 p.m. Saturday at Evans Funeral Home, Chapmanville, W. Va.

Phyllis Chafin
Phyllis Marie Chafin, 51, of West Williamson, W. Va., passed away Monday, February 14, 2005, at her residence.

Born July 7, 1953 in Williamson, W. Va., to Edith Stacy and the late Earl Chafin, she was a homemaker and a member of the Philadelphia United Baptist Church.

She is survived by her mother, Edith Stacy of West Williamson, W. Va. and several aunts, uncles and a host of friends.

There will be no services.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler, Ky.

Parlea Deere
Parlea (Sparky) Deere, 73, of Gove City, Ohio, passed away in Melbourne, Fla. February 10, 2005 surrounded by her family after her courageous battle with cancer.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harmon and Tella (Hall) Dempsey; brother, Paul Dempsey; and sisters, Cyrilda Adair and Alma Maynard.

Parlea is survived by her beloved husband, Melvin Deere; daughters, Judy Maynard, Beverly Burrer, Wynema McFarland; son, Roger Messer; stepdaughters, Linda Diane (Robert) Walke, Debra Sue (Rick) Arnholt; and stepsons, Melvin Deere Jr. and Daniel Lee (Lisa) Deere. She is also survived by her 28 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; sisters, Antha Mounts, Polly (Jim) Varney, Mary (Don) Howard; brothers, James (Joy) Dempsey, Harmond Dempsey Jr., Jerry (Phyllis) Dempsey; special friends, Sherry Deere; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Parlea was a member of the V.F.W., Moose Lodge in Grove City, Pennies From Heaven and was active in the U.A.W. with General Motors.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 17, 2005, at Newcomer Funeral Home, 3393 Broadway Ave., Grove City, Ohio, 43123.

Visitation will be held from 5 - 8 p.m. Wednesday, February 16, 2005. Pastor Jerry Dempsey will be officiating with interment at Sunset cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Newcomer Funeral Home.

Mary Ann Spurlock
Mary Ann Spurlock, 82, of Breeden, W. Va., passed away Sunday, February 13, 2005.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 17, 2005, 1 p.m. at Breeden Church of God with burial following in the Messer-Kirk cemetery at Breeden, W. Va.

Friends may call after 1 p.m. Tuesday at Breeden Church of God.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home of Inez, Ky.

Harmon Gilman, Sr.
Harmon Gilman, Sr., 83, of Taylorville, W. Va., went to be with the Lord Tuesday, February 22, 2005, at Williamson Memorial Hospital.

Born January 24, 1922, in Mingo County, W. Va., to the late Sid and Janey Dempsey Gilman, he was a United States Army veteran and of the Baptist faith. He was a retired coal miner.

Surviving are his ex-wife and longtime friend, Dorothy Gilman of Taylorville, W. Va.; two sons, Harmon Gilman, Jr. of Taylorville, W. Va. and Walter Ray (Donna) Gilman of Zanesville, W. Va.; two daughters, Jannie (John B.) Dempsey of Duncan Fork, W. Va. and Effie "Candy" Edwards and fiance Clyde Cisco of Varney, W. Va.; one brother, John Gilman of Duncan Fork, W. Va.; numerous special grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 25, 2005, 2 p.m., at Duncan Fork United Baptist Church with Rev. Johnny Ray Dempsey and Rev. Joaquine Ooten officiating. Burial will follow at the Dempsey and Mahon cemetery, Left Fork of Duncan Fork, W. Va. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call the Duncan Fork United Baptist Church at Upper Sheppards Town Exit Friday evening after 6 p.m. Services beginning at 7 p.m.

Mounts Funeral Home of Gilbert, W. Va. is in charge of arrangements.

Elijah Fletcher
Elijah Fletcher, 53, of Williamson, W. Va., passed away Thursday, February 24, 2005, at his residence.

Born March 12, 1951, in Martin County, Ky., to the late Martin Fletcher and Pearlie Moore Fletcher, he worked in natural resources and was of the Tri-State United Baptist faith.

In addition this parents, he is preceded in death by two sisters, Anna Jude Gamble and Janey Fletcher; and three brothers, Flem Fletcher, Jasper Fletcher and Columbus Fletcher.

Surviving are his wife, Rebecca Bowens Fletcher of Williamson, W. Va.; sons, Gene Fletcher of Borderland, W. Va., Julius Daniel (Frances) Fletcher of Chattaroy, W. Va. and James (Amanda) Fletcher of Borderland, W. Va.; daughters, Sabrina (Daryl) Evans of Hatfield, Ky., Connie (Jess) Hall of Wayne, W. Va. and Ann (Steve) White of Borderland, W. Va.; brothers, Matt (Doris) Fletcher of Pike County, Ky. and James (Buddy) Fletcher of Chattaroy, W. Va.; sisters, Angeline (Gene) Burnett of Nolan, W. Va., Martha (Roger) Kirk of Warfield, Ky., Sara Horn of Inez, Ky., Rosie Jude of Borderland, W. Va. and Lucille (Grant) Nichols of Menifee, Ky.; and 15 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 27, 2005, 11 a.m., at Little Anna United Baptist Church with ministers Gene Burnett, Gary Jude and Kenny Preece officiating. Burial will follow at Moore cemetery, Pilgrim, Ky.

Visitation will be held at 6 p.m. Friday and all day Saturday in the Chapel of Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Inez, Ky.

Jadie Bryant
Jadie Bryant, 86, of Newtown, W. Va., went to be with the Lord Friday, February 4, 2005, at Cabell-Huntington Hospital.

Born March 9, 1918, in Logan County, W. Va., to the late Ed Bryant and Polly Bryant, he was a retired coal miner with over 40 years service to the Island Creek Coal Company at the Red Jacket #17 Mine. He was of the Baptist faith and long time member of the UMWA.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by brothers, Cecil, Okey and Mosco Bryant; and sister, Grace Bryant Steele.

Surviving is his youngest sibling, Bama Marcum Kennedy of Newtown, W. Va., with whom he made a lifetime residence.

Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great great-nieces, great great-nephews whom loved him dearly. He was loved most and will be dearly missed by his two favorite great nephews Steven Williams and Austin Kennedy; his two favorite great nieces, Ashley Sammons Ooten and Jenny Sammons.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 8, 2005, 1 p.m., at Hatfield Funeral Chapel with Pastor Don Stroud officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. View Memory Gardens at Maher, W. Va.

Active pallbearers are Clyde Blair, Don Goff, David Bryant, Derek Davis, and John Williams. Honorary pallbearers are Keith Edwards, John Kennedy, Mack Sammons, James Thornhill and Steven Williams.

Visitation will be held 6 - 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday evenings at the funeral home with services at 7 p.m. Sunday evening.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler, Ky.

Katherine Steele

Katherine Steele, 44, of Beech Creek, W. Va., passed away Monday, February 14, 2005, at her residence.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler, Ky.

William Smith Conn

William Smith Conn, age 72, of Whitman, W. Va., went to be with the Lord on Monday, February 14, 2005 while in Cabell-Huntington Hospital.

He was born on April 5, 1932 at Crum, W. Va., he was the son of the late Jamma Stumbo Vance and Everett Conn.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents Millard and Bernice Stumbo; Aunt and Uncle who raised him, Florence and Ervin Marcum; his first wife Margaret Sabo Conn; and brother, Laymon Vance.

Mr. Conn was a US Army veteran serving in Korea, he was a former employee of Island Creek Coal Company, he was manager of Tri-State Welding Company for 37 years, he was the former owner of C & C Sales and Bill Conn Welding. Mr. Conn was a Christian just recently giving his life to the Lord.

He is survived by his former wife and best friend, Margaret Beddow of Logan, W. Va.; one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara "Bobbie" and Harold Stambaugh of Whitman; three brothers, Clinton Vance and wife Gail of Crum, Danny Vance of Huntington, and Everett Conn, Jr. of Williamson; two sisters, Myrtle Browning of Huntington and Sarah Ross and her husband, Dave of Crum; brothers-in-law, Bernie Adkins, Julius Sabo, and Bill Sabo; sisters-in-law, Helen Adkins, Pat Sabo, Ruby Merritt, and Barbara Vance; honorary daughter, Heather Kirkendall Young of Bruceton Mills, W. Va.

Bill left behind cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts, and a host of friends. He was "Daddy Dawg" to Beamer, Hannah, and Pepe,

Services will be held on Thursday, February 17, 2005 at 11 a.m. at the Honaker Funeral Home in Logan, W. Va., with his nephew Rev. William Jay Browning and Pastor Randy Skeens, officiating. Burial will follow in the Forest Lawn cemetery at Pecks Mill.

Friends may call Wednesday from 6-9 p.m. at Honaker Funeral Home in Logan.

Gladys Leshore-Harris

Gladys Leshore-Harris, 82, of Williamson went to be with the Lord on Monday, February 14, 2005, in Appalachian Regional Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility.

Born March 3, 1922, in Bankhead, Ala., she was a daughter of the late James and Charlotte Leshore.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her late husband, Harvey Harris; son Jerome Cade, and sister, Grace Reed, all of Williamson.

Gladys was a retired school teacher. Her professional career, a labor of love, covered four decades of public service in the Tennessee, Kentucky and West Virginia educational systems. She was a faithful member and pianist of Christ Temple Church.

Her survivors include her son, Bruce (Linda) Branch of Yokota, Japan; grandson, Craig (Kellie) Warren of Williamson, W. Va.; granddaughters, Jacqueline (Clifton) Alexander of Fayetteville, N.C., and Dawn (Rick) Richardson of Mountain Hope, Idaho; four great-grandsons and two great-granddaughters; brother, Lether Leshore of Akron, Ohio; sister, Jean (Melvin) Magwood of Cleveland, Ohio; nephews, Ronnie (Renee) Washington and Chester High, both of Cleveland, Ohio; and Arva (Ronald) Reynolds of Williamson, W. Va.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday, February 19, 2005, at Christ Temple Church, Williamson, with District Elder Thomas Moore officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain View Memory Gardens at Maher.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held from 6 until 8 p.m., Friday, February 18, 2005, at Christ Temple Church.
