Geneva M. Rudd, 73, of Stumptown, died Tuesday, May 18, 1999, at St. Francis Hospital, Charleston. She was born in Randolph County. She was a former em-ployee of Johnson Plastic Co. and was retired from Speed Selecter Co., both of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, and was a Christian by faith. Surviving are her husband, Charles D. Rudd; three sons, Donivon Rudd of Apple Valley, Calif., Charles D. Rudd, Jr., of Elizabethtown, Ky., and Thomas E. Rudd of Stumptown; two daughters, Darlene K. Putnam of Shock and Tonya Bowers of Aurora, Ohio; one sister, Etta Mae Leek of Massillon, Ohio; one brother, Robert McCauley of Morgantown; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Perry Haag officiating, and burial in Rosedale cemetery.

Cecil R. Sampson, 84, of Massillon, Ohio, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999. Surviving are his wife, Nellie G. Booher Sampson; one daughter, Wanetta Rogers; three sons, Delmar, Wesley and George Sampson; three sisters, Stella Tanner, Mary Starcher and Lorine Stanley; five brothers, Elmer, Virgil, Robert, Harold and Russell Sampson; 30 grandchildren; and 39 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, William and Bernard Sampson; one sister, Lida Butler; and three brothers, George, Roscoe and Andy Sampson. Services were held at Arnold-Lynch Funeral Home, Mas-sillon, with Dr. Mark Jacobs officiating. Burial was in Massillon cemetery.

Mary E. "Peggy" Sampson, 82, of Spencer, died Thursday, Apr. 29, 1999, in Spencer. Surviving are her companion, Virgil W. Sampson of Arnolds-burg; two daughters, Zorita Watson of Ravenswood and Mary Jo Sinnett of Spencer; and five grandchildren, John G. Ellison, Aaron and Andy Watson, Bruce Boggs and Brenda Fisher. Rev. Ralph "Otmer" Sampson, Jr., DD., 74, of Hockingport, Ohio, died Tuesday, Apr. 20, 1999, at Selby General Hospital. He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Ralph and Emma Craddock Sampson, Sr. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in France, Belgium, and Germany. He received a doctor of divinity degree from Burke Bible College, Burke, Ky., in 1977. He was associate pastor of Faith Chapel Community Church, chaplain of American Legion Post 13, Belpre, and lifetime member of DAV, W.Va. Chapter 6, along with VFW Post 5108, Marietta. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Edith Roach Sampson; one daughter, Brenda Joyce Sampson of Marietta; five sisters, Thelma Roach of Belpre, Lelah L. Starcher of Rittman, Velta Starcher of Ripley, Bessie Nutter of Fleming and Nina Mae Saunders of South Carolina; two grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Ernest, Cyrus, Holly and Frank Sampson; and two sisters, Vivian Sampson and Alta Starcher. Services were held at White-Moquin Funeral Home, Coolville, Ohio, with Wilbert Lowe officiating. Burial was in Decatur cemetery, Little Hocking, Ohio, with military graveside services by VFW Post 5108.

Rileigh Lynn-Grace Sampson, infant daughter of Bill and Wendy Sampson of Ypsilanti, Mich., died Sunday, Apr. 4, 1999, at birth. Surviving in addition to her parents are two brothers, Jaron Sampson of Millstone and Brandon Sampson of Ypsilanti; and paternal grandparents, Harold Sampson of Arnoldsburg and Clarence and Doris Dunlap of Ypsilanti. Burial was in St. Johns cemetery, Ypsilanti.

. Sherman J. Sampson, Sr., 61, of Barberton, Ohio, died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, in Ohio. He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Ford and Ida McCune Sampson. He was retired from Sparton Enterprises, Ohio. Surviving are two sons, Sherman J. Sampson, Jr., of Marshallville, Ohio, and Steven Sampson of Orrville, Ohio; two daughters, Sherry Plank of Bristol, Ind., and Pamela Griffin of Marshallville; and 12 grandchildren. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Danny Whited officiating. Burial was in Rick Falls cemetery, Arnoldsburg.
SAURBORNE, GEORGE
George P. Saurborne, 101, of Parkersburg, died Monday, May 24, 1999, at his residence. He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Samuel Wise and Hattie Margaret Blankenship Saurborne. He was a teacher in Calhoun and Wirt County schools for seven years before moving to Parkersburg and teaching in Wood County schools for six years. He entered the U.S. Railway Mail Service in 1930 and was assigned to Quinnimont in 1935. He was transferred to Huntington in 1941. At various times he enjoyed woodworking, making jewelry, gardening and raising flowers. He also managed a winning semi-pro baseball team while living in Quinnimont. In 1993, he began writing poetry. Several of his 100 poems were published in The Hillbilly and The Calhoun Chronicle. Surviving are one son, George Saurborne, Jr., of Huntington; one daughter, Harriet "Dolly" Rigney of Baltimore, Md.; three grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; five great-great-grand- children; and two step-daughters, Trudy Schaughency of Parkers-burg and Ruth Andrews of Florida. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Essie Dalrymple Saurborne, in 1921; his second wife, Garnett Nichols Saurborne, in 1956; and his third wife, Lillian Andrews Saurborne, in 1999. Services were held at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Bob Rose officiating. Entombment was in Sunset Memory Gardens Mausoleum.

Lillian I. Andrews Saurborne, 89, of Parkersburg, died Monday, Apr. 19, 1999, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital. She was born in Gilmer County, the daughter of the late Daniel and Ottie Jones Floyd. She was a member of North Parkers-burg Congregation of Jehovah's Witness Church and was retired from Dils Brother Dept. Store after 18 years of service. Surviving are her husband of 24 years, George P. Saurborne; two daughters, Trudie Schaughency of Parkersburg and Ruth Andrews of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; one step-daughter, Harriett Rigney of Baltimore, Md.; one step-son, George P. Saurborne, Jr., of Huntington; two grandsons; and several step-grandchildren and step-great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Henry E. Andrews in 1963; one sister and one brother. Services will be held Thursday, 2:30 p.m., at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Glen Whitlatch officiating. Entombment will be in Sunset Memory Gardens Mausoleum. Atha L. Collins Sayre, 85, of Springfield, Ohio, died Monday, Mar. 1, 1999, at the home of her daughter in Avon Park, Fla. She was born in Gilmer County, the daughter of the late Harley Benton and Ruth Stump Collins. She moved to Springfield in 1951 and became the owner of Powder Box Beauty Salon. Surviving are three daughters, Ellouise Smith Pritchett of Washington state; Blenda Smith George of Kentucky and Anita Smith Heath of Indiana; two step-sons, Robert "Nick" Sayre of California and William Sayre of Springfield; four sisters, Hazel Knotts of Stumptown, Eva Knotts of Springfield, Zella Leitch of Hinckley, Ohio, and Ethel Brown of Springfield; and grand-children, step-grandchildren, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Bert F. Sayre on Nov. 22, 1998; one daughter, Erma Smith Hayes; one sister, Olive Sanger; and one brother, Elbert "Buck" Collins. Memorial services were held at Jones-Kenney-Zechman Funeral Home, Springfield.

Edna E. Schartiger, 92, of Concord, N.C., died Friday, Mar. 5, 1999, in Concord. She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Jasper and Rose Stevens Elliott. She was a retired Calhoun County elementary school teacher with 32 years of service. She was the oldest member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and was a member of Rebekah Lodge #52, Grantsville, and American Legion Auxiliary, Victor Hamilton Post, Grantsville, and former member of Order of Eastern Star, Grantsville. Surviving are two step-daughters, Evalena Starcher of Concord and Barbara Mace of Spencer; seven grandchildren; and four great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Roscoe Parsons, and her second husband, Clayton Schartiger, and two brothers, Walter and Harold Elliott. Services were scheduled Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Mt. Zion U.M. Church, with Rev. Brad McBee officiating, and burial in Mt. Zion cemetery. Visitation hours included one hour prior to services at the church.
SEARS, DONALD DAVID
Donald David Sears, 55, of Chloe, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, at home following a long illness. He was born in Clay County, the son of the late Orie Sears and Stellie Burnsides Sears. He was a member of Lower Nicut Free Will Memorial Church. Surviving are one son, Gregory Lee Sears of Nicut; one daughter, Tracy Lynn Smith of Nicut; three brothers, Julius Sears of Walker, Hubert Sears of Frametown and Harold Sears of Servia; and one sister, Betty Sears of Mud Fork. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Gladie Matheny, Mamie Santy and Cally Drake, and one brother, Dallas Sears. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Helmon Nettles officiating. Burial was in Sears cemetery, near Nebo Baptist Church.
SHEETS, J. LINN
J. Linn Sheets, 89, of Auburn, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 1999, in Parkersburg. He was born in Auburn, Ritchie County, the son of the late Eldorus B. and Lona Mae Leggett Sheets. He graduated from Harrisville High School in 1929, Glenville State College in 1933, and obtained a master's degree in education from West Virginia University in 1935. Prior to World War II, he was a teacher and principal at several Ritchie County schools. He was a corporal in the U.S. Army and was wounded and captured in the Battle of the Bulge. After being liberated, he was awarded a Purple Heart. He was later assistant superintendent in Ritchie County, principal of Berkeley Springs High School, and chairman of the education department at Concord College until his retirement in 1972. He was a deacon at Baptist Church of Auburn. Surviving are three sons, Donald L. Sheets of Berkeley Springs, James E. Sheets of Lake and Claren D. Sheets of Madisonville, Ky.; one daughter, Vivian L. Cromer of Tazewell, Va.; three sisters, Louanna Hall and Rosalie King, both of Elyria, Ohio, and Freda Arnold of Arnoldsburg; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, A. Oletha Edwards Sheets in 1998; one brother, Bryan Sheets; and one granddaughter, Lyn E. Sheets. Services were scheduled Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Baptist Church, Auburn, with Rev. Harry Drake and Pastor Brian Stewart officiating, and burial in IOOF cemetery, Harrisville.
