HAMILTON, JOHN M.

Judge John M. Hamilton, 76, of 206 Elm St., Moorefield, died Saturday, Mar. 21, 1998, at his residence. Born Dec. 12, 1921, in Grantsville, he was the son of the late George and Losie (Knotts) Hamilton. He also was preceded in death by one son and two brothers. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy (Porter) Hamilton; one son, John Mark Hamilton; one daughter, Susan Hamilton Rogers; one brother; four sisters; one grandson; and one great-grandson. Judge Hamilton was a veteran of the U.S. Navy Air Service during World War II and served in the Philippine Islands and other parts of the Pacific Theater. He was a member of the Duffey Memorial United Methodist Church; member of Masonic Lodge, VFW, W.Va. Judicial Association, W.Va. Bar Association, and Hardy County Bar Association. He held Senior Judge Status in the State of West Virginia, and was a past president of Moorefield Lions Club. Judge Hamilton received his law degree from West Virginia University College of Law in 1950, and held a Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree. Before being elected as judge in 1976, he practiced law for several years as partner of the late Ralph J. Bean of Moorefield. Although Judge Hamilton took his chosen life's work seriously, he never took himself too seriously. He told of an old boy he had in court that approached the bench after his case was completed. He leaned over the bench and said, "John, you sure look cute in that dress!" His life can be summarized in three words: Family, God and Service. Few, if any conversations with Judge Hamilton failed to include his family and an inquiry about yours. He was proud of his family and showed a sincere concern about others. He cherished the old family values and respected people that shared the same values. He talked about his family in court and often mentioned his grandson, John Daniel, when he was making a point to prospective jurors. Judge Hamilton was a devoutly religious man and he practiced his religion not only on Sundays but during the week in everything he said and did. Although he didn't carry religion on his shoulder like some mantel, it was obvious to anyone who knew him that he was a religious man. He didn't brag of his religion, but he also was not ashamed of it. In fact he felt so strongly about his beliefs, he always instructed prospective jurors concerning its importance. He reminded them that their forefathers did not attempt to make or recognize any separation of religion from the State or governmental duties and that they specifically provided in both the Federal and State Constitutions that no elected officer of the government can serve in office until he first takes his oath of office and although the oath is administered by man (Clerk, etc.), it is taken to God. He would say: "So while we hear it freely proclaimed that Church and State (Courts) are separate, this is not now nor has it ever been true." Although Family and God were an important part of who Judge Hamilton was, he will probably be best remembered for the service he provided to his fellowman. He served in the United States Navy, as Prosecuting Attorney for Hardy County for two terms, and as Judge of the 22nd Judicial Circuit for 16 years. Since his retirement he had spent the last five years, two months, and 21 days as a Senior Status Judge and as a mediator. He loved the law and respected the profession. Although he disagreed with some of the modern trends, such as lawyer advertising and the public disdain it engendered, he firmly believed that the practice of law was, is now and should always be, an honorable profession and he fostered this belief in the way he conducted himself and the way he treated lawyers who practiced before him. He is what former President Teddy Roosevelt called a "Man of the Arena." As President Roosevelt once said: "It is not the critic who counts, not the one who points out how the strong man stumbled or how the doer of deeds might have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena; whose face is marred with sweat and dust and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again; who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions and spends himself in a worthy cause and who, if he fails, at least fails while bearing greatly so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat." Hopefully, each of us will commit to further the legacy that he left us of God, Family and Service to our fellowman.

HAMILTON, VICTOR

Longtime Grantsville attorney Victor Hamilton, 75, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 1998, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital. He was born in Grantsville, a son of the late Lorentz C. and Nelle Dodson Hamilton. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, having received two Bronze Stars, American Theater Ribbon and World War II Victory Medal for his service in the China Theater. He graduated from Calhoun County High School in 1940 and from T.C. Williams School of Law, Richmond, Va., in 1951. He began his law practice in Grantsville with his father, attorney Lorentz C. Hamilton. After his father's death, he continued his practice and became a noted civil litigant and trial lawyer in both state and federal courts. He served as prosecuting attorney, fiduciary commissioner, mental hygiene commissioner and special commissioner in Calhoun County. In 1988, he established the law firm of Hamilton and Morgan in which he remained active until his death. He was a member of the board of directors of Calhoun Banks and was a member of Knotts Memorial United Methodist Church, Grantsville. Surviving are his wife, Helen Hamilton; one daughter, Janet Coberly of Riyhadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; one son, Roger Hamilton of Charleston; one brother, Lorentz Carr Hamilton of Grantsville; and two grandchildren, Carolyn Hope and Theodore Coberly, both of Fairfax, Va. He was preceded in death by a son, Victor Hamilton III. Services will be held Thursday, 2 p.m., at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Mary Zimmer officiating. Burial will be in Bethlehem cemetery, Grantsville. Visitation is from 6-9 p.m., Wednesday. Memorials may be made to Knotts Memorial United Methodist Church or to Calhoun County Library. [Publisher's Note: Victor Hamilton, "Vic" to his friends, and I both grew up on High Street, in Grantsville, and as young pups got into the usual degree of mischief (some unusual) in the passage of our early days. (To be more specific would be both possibly embarrassing and incriminating!) Many times I would stop in Vic's office to discuss some trivial legal matter, which would then lead into often long discussing other matters of no importance but harking to matters of great personal pleasure and laughter. HAROLD, CONNIE

Connie M. Harold, 64, of Tallmadge, Ohio, died Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998. She was born in Medina County, Ohio, the daughter of the late Guy and Mae Burkett. She retired from the Board of Education after 23 years of service as a librarian at McEbright Elementary, and was a member of First Church of God, Tallmadge. Surviving are her husband of 46 years, Orvel; two daughters, Helena Goodrich of Mt. Zion and Guylene Harold of North Olmstead, Ohio; one son, Edward L. Harold of Indiana; four grand-children, Jeff Goodrich, Jennifer Jett, and Katie and Sydney Harold; great-grandchildren, Justin Price, Jeffrey Goodrich II, and Kendra and Kaylea Jett; special nephew, James; and several nieces, nephews, and friends. Services were held at Eckard-Baldwin Sanctuary Chapel, Akron, Ohio, with Pastor John C. Phillips and Pastor Ken Webb officiating. Burial was in Hillside Memorial Park. Donations can be made to First Church of God, 464 Northeast Ave., Tallmadge, OH 44278.

HAROLD, ELSIE MAE

Elsie Mae Harold, 81, of Stringtown Community, Mannington, died Monday, Jan. 12, 1998, at West Penn Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pa. She was born in Gip, a daughter of the late Fred and Janie Elizabeth Cottrill White. She retired from Fairmont General Hospital in 1981 after 33 years of service. She was a member of Marion County Senior Citizens Travel Club and of AFL/CIO Local #550. She attended Stringtown United Methodist Church. Surviving are four daughters, Joan Hayes and Janice Hill, both of Mannington, Karen Martin of Fairmont and Nancy Barker of Fairview; one son, Samuel D. Harold of Sharpsburg, Md.; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, including Helena Goodrich of Mt. Zion; two sisters, Dona Vaughan of Front Royal, Va., and Ronnie McCumbers of Nicut; and a close friend, Charlotte Lapinsky of Rachel. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl S. "Shorty" Harold; one daugher, Doris Jean Harold; one grandson, Timothy Lynn Hayes; three sisters; and two brothers. Services were held at Masters Funeral Home, Mannington, with Rev. E. Gerald Gray officiating. Burial was in Shinnston Masonic cemetery.

HARRIS, ANNA

Anna Harris, 94, of New Philadelphia, Ohio, died Friday, Nov. 20, 1998, at South Broadway Nursing Home. She was born in Grantsville, the daughter of the late Bud and Lora Barr Starkey. She was a member of Church of the Nazarene, New Philadelphia. Surviving are a niece, Wanda Wright, who took care of her, and several other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Harris, in 1973; two sisters; and three brothers. Services were held at Naylor Funeral Home, New Philadel-phia, with Rev. Terry Kidd officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Burial Park, New Philadelphia.

HARRIS, RONZEL "RONNIE"

Ronzel Joe "Ronnie" Harris, 56, of Barnes Run died unexpectedly at his home on Wednesday, Apr. 15, 1998. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of Sarah Richards Harris of Grantsville and the late Harley Harris. He was a former mayor of Grantsville and a member of Grantsville Volunteer Fire Dept., Grantsville Lions Club, and Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, Hur. He was an employee of Henkels & McCoy, and a former employee of B.F. Goodrich and of Kellwood Co., Spencer. Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Dottie Stull Harris; one daughter, Angelia Kay Slider of Mt. Zion; five brothers, Donald Ray Harris and Eddie Harris, both of Grantsville, Harley Gail Harris of Big Bend, Clyde Harris of North Carolina and Bernard Harris of Mt. Zion; two sisters, Carol Wine of Mt. Zion and Bonnie Lemley of Grantsville; two grandsons; and one step-grandson. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Glendon McKee and Rev. Brad McBee officiating. Burial was in Carpenter cemetery, Hur.

HARRIS, SANDRA M.

Sandra M. Harris, 35, of Greensboro, N.C., formerly of Calhoun County, died Friday, Apr. 24, at her residence. She was born in Gassaway, a daughter of Ruby Hardman of Greensboro and the late Buddy A. Hardman. She was employed by Access Financial Services, Jamestown, N.C. Surviving in addition to her mother is one brother, Arland Hardman of Greensboro. Services were scheduled Wednesday, 10 a.m., at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Curtis Mitchell officiating, and burial in Turner cemetery, Lockney.

HATHAWAY, LORA M.

Lora M. Hathaway 80, of M . Zion, died Sunday, Oct. 11, 1998, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center, following a short illness. She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Robert M. and Hilda Gherke Shock. She was a member of Rush Run Baptist Church and was a homemaker. Surviving are one brother, Darrell Shock of Sand Ridge; four sisters, Marlene Illyn of Milford, Conn., Ruby Shock of Sand Ridge, Rita Stewart of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Grace Meincke of Daytona, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Bethanie and Shawn Shock, both of Arnoldsburg. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ira "Doc" Hathaway; one son, Robert L. Shock; two brothers, Dennis and Denzil Shock; and two sisters, Arlena Jones and Edith Paquet.Services were scheduled Wednesday, 2 p.m., at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Jack Stump and Rev. Lewis Villers officiating, and burial in Shock Family cemetery near Stumptown.

HATHAWAY, TENNIE N.

Tennie N. Hathaway, 90, of Parkersburg, formerly of Grantsville, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital. She was born in Savannah, Tenn., a daughter of the late Saul and Nancy Jane Brewer. She was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. Surviving are one daughter, Emogene D. Hupp of Parkersburg and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oral B. Hathaway; and two sons, Eugene Hathaway and Leon Hathaway. Services were held at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, with Rev. Glendon McKee and Rev. Brad McBee officiating. Burial was in Mt. Zion cemetery.

HAUGHT, THELMA H.

Thelma Haught, 77, of Grantsville, died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1998, at St. Joseph Hospital. She was born in Calhoun County, and was a homemaker and a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church. Surviving are one son, Darrell Bower of Grantsville; two granddaughters, Barbara Taylor of Fairmont and Lisa Bower of Waynesbura, Pa.; two great-grandchildren, Woody and Ben Taylor; and one sister, Eva Owens of Parkersburg. She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow W. Haught; an infant daughter; three sisters, Nona Garretson, Gladis Hickman and Minnie Owens; and three brothers, Morford Bower, James Bower and Delmas Bower. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Alfred Hickman officiating. Burial was in Bethlehem cemetery, near Grantsville.

HAYHURST, ESTA E.

Esta H. Hayhurst, 93, of Parkview Health Care Center, died Friday, Oct. 30, 1998, at the center. She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Ulysses Grant and Sarah Slider Stout. She was a member of South Parkersburg United Methodist Church and a longtime member of Friendship Sunday School Class. She retired in 1966 from A.B. Chance following 21 years of employment. Surviving are three grandsons, Larry Barnes of Vienna, Mark Ferrell of Barberton, Ohio, and Russell Hayhurst of England; two great- granddaughters, Michelle Linger and Cassandra Barnes, both of Parkersburg; two step-great-grandsons; one great-grandson; and one step-great-granddaugher. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Hayhurst; two daughters, Lillian Barnes and Lavaughn Ferrell; one son, Kenneth Hayhurst; five brothers; and two sisters. Services were held at Leavitt Funearl Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. Kermit Poling officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Hill cemetery, near Grantsville.

HAYS, WILLIAM R.

William R. (Bill) Hays, 60, of Spencer, died Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, in CAMC-Memorial Division, Charleston, after a long illness. He was born in Left Hand, Roane County, the son of the late Jackson and Mildred Frances Snodgrass Hays. He was a retired equipment operator. Surviving are companion, Pat Fluharty of Spencer; one son, Billy Hays of Looneyville; three daughters, Marcia Drake of Newton and Martha Smith and Lisa Fore, both of Spencer; two stepsons, Jerry and Gary Fluharty, both of Spencer; one stepdaugh4er, Loretta Cottrell of Spencer; four brothers, Carless C. Hays and Larry J. Hays, both of Ravenna, Ohio, Melvin K. Hays of Arnoldsburg and Dannie N. Hays of Stow, Ohio; two sisters, Eleanor J. Smith of Arnoldsburg and Patsy E. Keough of Stow, Ohio; six grandchildren; and five step-grandchildren. Services were held at John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Allen Smith officiating.
