MARKS, GLORIA

Gloria M. Marks, 59, of Orma, died Saturday, Dec. 12, in Roane General Hospital, following a brief illness. She was born in Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late John Charles and Berdina Mont Hoovler. Surviving are her husband, Ronzel Marks; one son, Roger H. Hoovler of Orrville, Ohio; one step-daughter, Becky Chaney of Apple Creek, Ohio; three step-sons, Jeffrey Marks and Jason Marks, both of Shreve, Ohio, and Erick Marks of Wooster, Ohio; one sister, Alice Hoovler of Erie, Pa.; two brothers, Charles Hoovler of Franklin, Pa., and Henry Hoovler of Arkansas; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Services were scheduled Wednesday, 2 p.m., at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Carl Marks officiating, and burial in Elmira Baptist Church cemetery, Elmira.

MARKS, WALTER C.

Walter C. Marks, 74, of Arnoldsburg, died Monday, June 22, 1998, at his home. He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Fred and Mina Rush Marks. He was an equipment operator in the pipeline construction industry. Surviving are three sons, David Marks of Newark, Johnnie Marks of Medina, Ohio, and Billy Marks of Grantsville; four daughters, Barbara Bush and Connie McCartney, both of Grantsville, Erma Sinns of Bedford Heights, Ohio, and Mae Lemon of Inverness, Fla.; two sisters, Vina Harris Parsons of Arnoldsburg and Geraldine Boothe of Grantsville; three brothers, Verdis (Shorty) Marks of Zanesville, Ohio, Henry Marks of Millstone and Virgil (Red) Marks of Canal Fulton, Ohio; 20 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. Services will be held Thursday, 2 p.m., at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Mike Worf officiating. Burial will be in Poling-Marks cemetery, Millstone. Visitation was scheduled at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday.

MARSHALL, ELLEN J.

Ellen JoAnn Marshall, 52, of Parkersburg, died Wednesday, June 24, 1998, at Parkview Health Care Center. She was born in Parkersburg, the daughter of the late Grant and Elsie Cremeans Marshall. She worked for McHappy's for 24 years. Surviving are one son, Christopher Marshall of Little Hocking; two brothers, Eugene Marshall and Jack Marshall, both of Little Hocking; two grandchildren, Stephen and Rebecca Marshall, both of Grantsville; and a special friend, Robert Gallagher of Parkersburg. She was preceded in death by one brother, one sister, and one daughter. Services were held at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. Larry Rice officiating. Burial was in Decatur Methodist cemetery.

MATHEWS, MATHEW

Mathew Foster Mathews, 74, died Thursday, May 21, 1998, at Memorial Southeast Hospital, Houston, Tex. He was born in Vienna, a son of the late William J. and Bess W. Mathews. He attended Parkersburg High School and graduated from Calhoun County High School in 1941. He was active in band at both schools. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War, and was owner of Mathews Rechargeable Batteries, Houston. Surviving are his wife, Patricia Mathews of Pearland, Tex.; three sons, Michael C. Mathews, Sr., of Pearland, Kimberly Mathews of Toledo, Ohio, and William James of Toledo; two daughters, Stephanie Vaughn of Dayton, Ohio, and Kelly Fair of Lafayette, Colo.; one brother, William J. Mathews of Vienna; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kay Mathews. Services were held at SouthPark Funeral Home, Pearland. Graveside services will be held at Evergreen North cemetery, Parkersburg, on Wednesday, July 8, at 11 a.m.

MAYNE, ROGER W.

Roger W. Mayne, 50, of Spencer, died Thursday, Aug. 13, 1998, in CAMC-Memorial Division, Charleston, after a sudden illness. He was born in Spencer, the son of Mildred Batten Mayne of Spencer and the late William O. (Bill) Mayne. He was a truck driver for Great American Lines, Ravenswood, and a farmer. He had been an employee of the former Spencer Hospital.Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Patricia Bush Mayne of Spencer; one daughter, Pamela Ann Mayne of Spencer; two sons, Eric Mayne, with the U.S. Navy, Norfolk, Va., and Johnny Mayne of Spencer; one brother, John G. Mayne of Newton; and one half brother, Jack Batten of Pt. Pleasant. Services were held at John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer. Burial was in Sycamore Baptist Church cemetery, Mt. Zion.

MAZE, WILBERT B.

Wilbert Blaine Maze, 54, of Grantsville, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997, at his residence. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of Nona Rose Maze of Munday and the late Clarence Maze, Sr. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was employed by B.F. Goodrich, Spencer, for 22 years. He attended Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Phyllis M. Maze; two daughters, Ann Kaufman of Grantsville and Elaine Lindenthal of Birch River; two brothers, Dr. Clarence Maze, Jr., of Petersburg, Va., and Roger Maze of Limestone, Tenn.; three sisters, Betty Krugman of Pennsboro, Connie Lahman of Aiken, S.C., and Karen Richard of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and two grand-children. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Jeff Lahman and Rev. Brad McBee officiating. Burial was in Maze cemetery, Munday.

McCLAIN, ARIEL E., JR.

Ariel E. "Mac" McClain, Jr., 77, of Ironton, Ohio, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, in Kings Daughter Medical Center, Ashland, Ky. He was born in Salem, the son of the late Ariel E. and Flossie Mae Allen McClain, Sr. He was a World War II Army veteran and a retired truck driver fo Ford Brothers with 30 years service. He also worked in gas fields for Hope Natural Gas Co., Grantsville. He graduated from Calhoun County High School and was a Baptist. Surviving are his wife, Maxine Byrd McClain; one daughter, Andrea Trippy of Huntington; one son, Tom McClain of Coal Grove; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Helen Watson of Belpre, Ohio, June Buckland of Charlerol, Pa., and Nadine Gant of Tempe, Ariz. He was preceded in death by one brother, Irvin McClain, and one sister, Pauline Coulter. Services were held at Phillips Funeral Home, Ironton, with Minister Philip LeMaster officiating. Burial was in Highland Memorial Gardens.

McCUMBERS, ROGER LEE

Roger Lee McCumbers, 48, of Nicut, died Thursday, May 28, 1998, at Charleston Area Medical Center, General Division, after an extended illness. He was born in Nicut, a son of Lester and Linda McCumbers of Nicut. He attended Lower Nicut Baptist Church. Surviving are one daughter, Shawnna Stout of Servia; two sons, Joey Lee McCumbers of Clay and Roger Shannorn McCumbers of Servia; six sisters, Beatrice Putman of Arnoldsburg, Anna Lee White of Burton, Ohio, Louis Paulette Ice of Mantua, Ohio; Betty Jo Cottrell of Nicut; Sharon Mooris of Newton Falls, Ohio, and Tammy Smith of Tanner; two brothers, Billy Dean McCumbers of Five Forks and Timmothy Mark McCumbers of Nicut; and one grandson, Christopher Trae Stout. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Ed Moore officiating. Burial was in Mount Run cemetery, near Nicut.

McCUNE, EDITH K.

Edith Kathleen King McCune, 72, of Fayetteville, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998, in Oak Hill. She was a housewife an attended the Church of God. Surviving are one son, Gary McCune of Goldsboro, N.C.; two daughters, Sharon Lea Pyatt of Oak Hill and Betty Jo Triplett of Fayetteville; one brother, Bernell King of Winslow, Ark.; three sisters, Goldie Bess of Fenwick, Dora Lea Davis of Fayetteville and Charlotte Ann Lewis of Akron, Ohio; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Lida Bailey of Minnora and Ida Siers of Grantsville. Services were held at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayettevile, with Rev. Joann Treadway officiating. Burial was in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

McKOWN, SHIRLEY

Shirley Powell McKown, 93, of Lookout, died Sunday, Apr. 12, 1998, at a personal care home in Fayetteville. She was born in Cabin Creek, a daughter of the late Lon and Mae Downs Powell. She was a member and a Sunday School teacher for over 50 years at Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, Lookout. She was a member of Longdale Chapter of Order of Eastern Star, Lookout Garden Club, Farm Bureau Association, Farm Women's Club, Fayette Co. Homemakers Club, Fayette Co. Retired Teachers Association, National Education Association, and AARP. She was a retired teacher and principal for Calhoun and Fayette counties boards of education. She was a Morris Harvey College graduate. Surviving are two daughters, Lou M. Lilly of Oak Hill and Marty S. Booth of Vienna; five sons, Robert E McKown of Fayetteville, Theodore R. McKown of Painesville, Ohio, Paul McKown of Charleston, Edward P. McKown of Savannah, Ga., and Franklin McKown of St. Cloud, Fla.; four sisters, Eva Burton of Parkersburg, Amy Hathaway of Grantsville, Lucille Wilmouth of Millstone and Emma Neal Montgomery of Columbia, S.C.; two brothers, William G. Powell of St. Albans and Rue Powell of Arnoldsburg; and one sister-in-law, Laverne Powell of Fayetteville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Evan McKown; one daughter, Helen Wade; two sons, Jack McKown and Charles McKown; one sister, Verla Powell Poling; two brothers, Paul Powell and Victor Powell; and one grandson, Greg McKown. Services will be held Thursday, 1 p.m., at Albert's Chapel United Methodist Church, Sandridge, with Rev. Brad McBee officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitations were scheduled Wednesday, 6 to 8 p.m., at Wallace & Wallace Chapel, Ansted, with Eastern Star services at 7:30 p.m. by Longdale Chapter, Lookout, and Thursday, noon to 1 p.m., at the church. Memorials may be made to Mt. Olive U.M. Church, Lookout, WV 25868, or Albert's Chapel U.M. Church, Sandridge, W.Va., in care of Mary McKee, Millstone, WV 25261.

METZ, FOREST 'BRUCE'

Forest "Bruce" Metz, 73, of Akron, Ohio, formerly of Nicut, died Saturday, May 2, 1998, at Barberton Citizens Hospital, Barberton, Ohio, following a long illness. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Martin Metz, Sr., and Maude Boone Metz. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was retired from Firestone Tire and Rubber Co., Akron. He was a member of VFW Post #3532, Akron. Surviving are six daughters, Wanda Bush of Glenville and Diane Stopher, Debbie Cook (with whom he made his home), Denise Heppe, Denine Metz and Dawn Marks, all of Akron; one son, Steve Metz of Akron; five sisters, Emma Siers and Gertie Perkins, both of Chloe, Inez Carr of Millstone, Pauline Farrar of Glenville and Irene Wayne of Spencer; two brothers, Martin Metz, Jr., of Orma and Frank Metz of Chloe; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Thurl Metz and Clell Metz, and one sister, Anna Miller Longfellow. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Mike Worf officiating. Burial was in Minnora cemetery, Minnora.

MILLER, IRENE E.

Irene E. Miller, 71, of Tanner, died Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, at her residence. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Seymour and Annie Burrows Smith. She was retired from B. F. Goodrich Co., Grantsville, and was a Baptist. Surviving aer her husband, John W. Miller; two daughters, Helen Travis of Mineral Wells and Mildred Nelson of Jacksonville, Fla., two sons, Herbert Dale Smith and Delbert O. Collins, both of Florida; two stepsons, John W. Miller, Jr., of Baltimore, Md., and Carl E. Miller of Lumberbridge, N. C.; one sister, Ruby Holbert of Florida; two brothers, Harry Oak Smith of New Mexico and Albert Thurl Smith of South Carolina; 39 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Annabelle Bennett; and one grandson. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Alfred Hickman officiating. Burial was in Hunt cemetery, Big Bend.

MILLER, JOHN

John Miller, 84, of Lumber Bridge, N.C., formerly of Tanner, died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, in Moore County Regional Hospital, Southern Pines, N.C. Services were scheduled Tuesday, 2 p.m., at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Alfred Hickman officiating, and burial in Hunt cemetery, Big Bend. Visitation was scheduled one hour prior to services.

MILLER, L. GORDON

Lester Gordon Miller, 67, of Bayville, N.J., died Wednesday, July 8, 1998, at Community Medical Center, Toms River, following a heart attack. He was born in Grantsville, the son of the late Sullie A. and Carrie Miller. He was employed by Pappettis Trucking, Elizabeth, N.J., where he had worked as an interstate truck driver for 17 years. He was previously employed as a bus driver for Greyhound. He was a Navy veteran, and a member of Lacey Township Elks Club and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Bayville. Surviving are his wife, Marion Chencharik Miller; one son, Lester G. Miller, Jr.. of Los Angeles, Calif.; two daughters, Debbie Sonnay, Spring Hill, Fla., and Pam Jajer, Woodridge, N.J.; one sister, Melba Jean Miller of Grantsville; one step-son, Robert Apple of Bayville; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two half-brothers, Richard Gail Miller of Hutchenson, Kan., and Charles Runnion of St. Marys. O'Connell's Home for Funerals, Bayville, was in charge of arrangements. Donations were made to Bayville First Aid Squad in his memory.
