ROGERS, EMERY 'PETE'

Emery T. "Pete" Rogers, 82, of Grantsville, died Tuesday, June 2, 1998, at Veteran's Administration Medical Center, Clarks-burg, following a brief illness. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Emery and Maggie Ferrell Rogers. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was retired from Hope Natural Gas Co. He was a member of Eureka Lodge #40, AF&AM, Grantsville, and was an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman. Surviving are his wife, Brooke Riddel Rogers; one daughter, Pamela A. Morgan of Columbia, S.C.; two sons, John R. Rogers of Greenville, S.C., and Sammy W. Rogers of Falls Church, Va.; one brother, Victor Rogers of Wadsworth, Ohio; one sister, Lona Hurd of Wadsworth; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Robert Nicholas officiating. Burial was in Bethlehem Ceme-tery, Grantsville.

RUSH, PLUMMER A.

Plummer A. Rush, 84, of Parkersburg, died Friday, Aug. 7, 1998, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.He was born in Fairchance, Pa., the son of the late Harry and Josephine Benson Rush. He was a claims manager for Westfield Insurance Co. He was a Pennsylvania Golden Gloves boxing champion, raced speed boats, and was an avid golfer. He was owner/operator of Plum Line Golf and known for his customized golf clubs. Surviving are his wife, Sue McCoy Rush; one son, John Sondereker of DeMoines, Iowa; two stepsons, John F. McCoy of Grantsville and Dr. Jay Michael McCoy of Knoxville, Tenn.; three sisters, Sue Berchem of Burney, Calif., Lue Rush of Modesto, Calif., and Gail McCormack of Rohnert Park, Calif.; one brother, Jack Rush of Foster City, Calif.; one granddaughter; and three step-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his first wife, Eleanor Dunbar Rush; two brothers; and two sisters.Services were held at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg. Burial was in Evergreen North cemetery.

SANDY, G. GERALDINE

G. Geraldine Dye Sandy, 70, of Parkersburg, formerly of Big Springs, died Saturday, Apr. 4, 1998, at the home of Charles and Edna Clegg of Parkersburg, where she resided. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Kenneth and Caroline Richards Dye. She attended Beech Valley U.M. Church, Big Springs. Surviving are one uncle, Glen Dye, and three aunts, Dorothy Dye, Sarah Harris and Betty Dye. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Sandy. Services were scheduled Wednesday, 1 p.m., at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with burial in Big Springs cemetery, Big Springs. Visitation was scheduled Wednesday, noon to 1 p.m.

SCHMIDT, EDRA

Edra L. Schmidt, 75, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, at Edward Hospital, Naperville, Ill. She was born in Big Springs, the daughter of the late Virgil and Florence Weinrich Snider. She was a 1941 graduate of Calhoun County High School and moved to Naperville in 1953. She was a 4-H leader and assisted at the DuPage County Fair for many years. She was a member of the Alliance of the Mentally Ill of DuPage County. She was an Avon representative for 22 years and a member of Bethany Lutheran Church since 1953. Surviving are her husband, Waldemar "Wally" Schmidt of Naperville; two sons, Harlan Schmidt of Lombard and Charles Schmidt of Naperville; two daughters, Walena Schmidt of Naperville and Florence Landorf of Warrenville; five grandchildren; one brother, William Snider of Cleveland; and three sisters, Mable Strnad of Cleveland, and Florence Matyas and Leona Milanko, both of Brunswick, Ohio. She was preceded in death by one brother, Lewis Snider, and two sisters, Addie Richards and Rosemary Thompson. Services were held at Bethany Lutheran Church, Naperville. Burial was in Wheatland cemetery, Naperville.

SCOTT, GRETA CHURL

Greta Churl Scott, 86, of Big Springs, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 1998, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Curtis and Hattie Bennett Hathaway. She was a retired elementary school teacher having taught in Calhoun, Ritchie and Wood counties, and Hawaii. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, Order of Eastern Star, Rebekah Lodge, and Retired Teachers Association in Calhoun County. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Grantsville. Surviving are a son-in-law, Thomas G. Williams; two grandchildren, Scott and Whitney Williams; one sister, Pearl VanHorn of Big Springs; one half-sister, Dixie Gregg of Warwick, Ohio; two half-brothers, Charles C. Hathaway of Weston and Darrell Hathaway of Mineral Wells. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wesley Scott; and one daughter, Brenda Sue Williams. Services were scheduled Wednesday, 1 p.m., at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with burial in Mt. Zion cemetery.

SCOTT, KENNETH D.

Kenneth D. Scott, 61, of Spencer, died Monday, Feb. 23, 1998, at his residence. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Walter and Willia Sturm Scott. He was retired from Pennzoil Co. and operated a small engine repair shop. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, having served two years in Japan and two years in Panama City, Fla. He was a member of American Legion Post #21, Spencer, and Rush Creek Baptist Church, and attended Speed Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Freda B. West Scott; three sisters, Betty Surface of Sistersville, Kathryn Miler of Spencer and Donna Mace of Bridgeport; and trusted friend, Doyle Jones. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Scott and Millard Scott; and two sisters, Mildred Kelly and Wanda Green. Services were held at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spen-cer, with Rev. Roger Flesher and Rev. Orland Reynolds officiating. Burial was in Eventide cemetery, Spencer, with military graveside rites.

SEARS. JAMES G.

James G. Sears, 73, of Mineral Wells, died Sunday, Oct. 4, 1998, at St. Joseph's Hospital. He was born in Chloe, the son of the late William Wiley Sears and Lydia Ethel Jarvis Sears Santy. He was a retired carpenter and had served in the U.S. Army. Surviving are his wife, Lucy Wineland Bibbee Sears; one daughter, Judy May Noah of Demascus, Md.; one son, Thomas Martin Sears of Belpre; one granddaughter, Beth Anne Barker of Parkersburg; and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Beulah Mae Martin Sears; two sisters; one half-sister; and one half-brother. Services were scheduled Wednesday, 2:30 p.m., at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Pastor Dean Ash officiating, and burial in Sunset Memory Gardens.

SHAW, HELEN

Helen Maxine Suthers Shaw, 69, of Hur, died Saturday, May 23, 1998, at home, of a heart attack. She was born in Hamden, Ohio, on Mar. 10, 1929, a daughter of the late William and Myrtle Suthers. Over the years she lived in Detroit, Mich., West Point, N.Y., Fort Meade, Md., and at Hur since 1983. Surviving are her husband, Carl F. Shaw; three sons, Dale R. Shaw, David M. Shaw and Greg M. Shaw; five grandchildren; and a half- sister, Beverly Preston of Wellston, Ohio. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 28, 5:30 p.m., at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Hur. SHIMER, ERNEST D. "PAT"

Ernest D. "Pat" Shimer, 87, of Creston, died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1998, at his home following a long illness.He was born in Calhoun County, and was a retired tool dresser in the oil and gas industry. He was a member of Creston United Methodist Church and Knights of Pythias Lodge, Cremo. Surviving are three sons, David Shimer of Clinton, Ohio, Mark Shimer of Creston and Matt Shimer of Annamoriah; three daughters, Faye Kramer of Ottawa, Ill., Ruby Bingman of Akron, Ohio, and Barbara Cooper of Annamoriah; one brother, James Shimer of California; two sisters, Ethel Boltz of Beverly and Evelyn Bowman of Fairmont; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna E. Shimer, in 1988; two sisters, Minnie and Myrtle; and three brothers, Howard, Harvey and Earl.Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Lewis Villers officiating. Burial was in Cooper cemetery, Annamoriah.

SHOCK, WILLARD

Willard Shock, 82, of Mt. Zion, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, at the home of his daughter in Grantsville. He was born in Grantsville, a son of the late William and Edna Garrett Shock. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was an avid fisherman and a Baptist. Survivors include three sons, William T. Shock of Millstone, Jack David Shock of Walterboro, S.C., and Larry Shock of Charleston; four daughters, Bertha Jean Promley of Ft. Myers, Fla., Edna JoAnn Shock and Judy Morton, both of Grantsville, and Tammy Moore of South Charleston; 13 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Shock. Services wre scheduled Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with burial in Shock cemetery near Stumptown.

SHUMAN, JAMES D. SR.

James D. Shuman, Sr., 71, of Vienna, died Sunday, Apr. 19, 1998, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital. He was born in Pike, a son of Flossie P. Scott Shuman of Vienna and the late James I. Shuman. He was a graduate of Parkersburg High School, where he was active with the Big Red Band. He was a Mountain State Business College graduate who went on to work as an accountant in the Parkersburg and Vienna area for over 50 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and Korean War. He was a member of the Army band. He was a member of the original Boy Scout Troop 20 and served as treasurer. He also worked with the Boy Scout Council. He was active with Senior Citizen Bowling League at Emerson Bowling Lanes. He was a member of 36th Street Church of Christ for 55 years, having served as elder. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, camping and model trains. Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife of 50 years, Lois Jean Shott Shuman; one daughter, Linda Deem of Vienna; three sons, James D. Shuman, Jr., and John H. Shuman, both of Vienna, and Robert J. Shuman of Parkersburg; eight grandchildren, Melissa Wilson of Parkersburg, Tamara Deem of Columbus, Andrea Deem, Jeff Shuman, Daniel Shuman and Benjamin Shuman, all of Vienna, Justin Shuman and Jessie Shuman, both of Parkersburg; one great-granddaughter, Abigail Elaine Wilson of Parkersburg; two sisters, Velma S. Graham and Glenna M. Schott of Vienna; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Services were scheduled Wednesday, 1 p.m., at 36th Street Church of Christ, with Tom Butterfield officiating, and burial in Evergreen North cemetery. Visitation was scheduled Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the church.

SIDWELL, LURANNA L.

Luranna L. Sidwell, 75, of Orrville, Ohio, died Tuesday, Mar. 31, 1998, in Wooster. She was born in Orma, a daughter of the late Ed and Jane Nichols Tucker. She was a homemaker and a member of Orma United Methodist Church. Surviving are two sons, Robert Groves of Big Bend and Carl Groves of Apple Creek, Ohio; three stepsons, Buck Groves of Akron, Ohio, Junior Groves of Orma and Ward Groves of Lockney; five brothers, Russ Tucker of Orrville, Ottice Tucker of Brewster, Ohio, Paul Tucker of Navarre, Ohio, and Homer Tucker and Euell Tucker, both of Arnoldsburg; two sisters, Pearl Shock of Beach City, Ohio, and Ruby McCumbers of Palestine; 10 grand-children; and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Dennis; two brothers; and two sisters. Services were held at Orma United Methodist Church, Orma, with Rev. Glen McBride officiating. Burial was in Orma U.M. Church cemetery.

SIERS, THELMA

Thelma "Peggy" Siers, 85, of Stumptown died Sunday, June 14, 1998, at her residence. She was born in Rosedale, Braxton County, the daughter of the late John Robert and Emma Jane Ramsey Godfrey. She was a homemaker and a member of Rush Run Baptist Church. Surviving are one son, Harry Siers of Stumptown; four daughters, Jean Sears and Sue Collins, both of Stumptown, and Betty Miller and Tish Vannoy, both of Mineral Wells; 12 grandchildren; and 17 great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harley F. Siers; three brothers, Jennings "Jack" Godfrey, Omar Godfrey and Gayford Godfrey; and one sister, Ermal O'Field. Services were scheduled Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Rush Run Baptist Church, near Stumptown, with Rev. Lewis Villers officiating, and burial in Collins-Community cemetery, near Stumptown.

SIMMONS, BILLY A.

Billy A. Simmons, 72, of Shock, died Sunday, Apr. 5, 1998, at Roane General Hospital following a long illness. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Howard and Dorothy Brady Simmons. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a retired heavy equipment operator. Surviving are one son, Kenneth Simmons of Newton Falls, Ohio; three daughters, Kathy Heltzel of Shock, Karen Brown of Warren, Ohio, and Kelly Nicholas of Hickory, N.C.; 10 grand-children; and six great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Garnet Simmons, in 1992, and one grandchild. Services will be held Thursday, 1 p.m., at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg. Burial will be in Conley cemetery, Orma, with Rev. Howard Nichols officiating. Visitation was scheduled Wednesday, 6 to 8 p.m.
