SIMONS, DALLAS

Dallas Simons, 84, of Akron, Ohio, died Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998. He was born in Oka, the son of the late Fred and Edith Simons. He resided in the Akron area since 1945. He retired in 1976 with 31 years of service with General Tire and Rubber Co. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served during World War II and was a member of U.R.W. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Vesta Simons; one daughter, Connie Louise Simons of Akron, Ohio; two brothers, Cam and Roscoe Simons; two sisters, Ruby Truman and Erma Jarvis, all of West Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers. Services were scheduled Wednesday, 12:30 p.m., at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, Akron, with Pastor Willie C. Smith officiating, and burial in Hillside Memorial Park._

SIMS, OPAL BUSCH

Opal Busch Sims, 74, of Brohard, died Friday, June 12, 1998, at Camden-Clark Hospital, following an extended illness. She was born in Wirt County, a daughter of the late French and Martha Ellen Snider Busch. She was a homemaker and a lifelong Wirt County resident. She was a member of Brohard Goodwill Club and attended Strait Creek Baptist Church, Brohard. Surviving are her husband of 35 years, Denver Sims; one son, Larry Lemasters of Bloomfield, N.J.; two daughters, Shirley Ferrell of Parkersburg and Patty Bruerton of Brohard; two step-granddaughters, Elizabeth Bruerton and Christina Borden, both of Dyersburg, Tenn.; five brothers-in-law, Fred Sims of Big Bend, Bill Sims of Thornville, Ohio, Eugene Sims of Cleveland, Richard Sims of Troy and Jerry Sims of Big Springs; and one sister-in-law, Bonnie Buck of Big Springs. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Noble Busch, William Busch, Jack Busch, Fred Busch and Glen Busch; and one sister, Chessie Robinson. Services were held at Strait Creek Baptist Church, with Rev. Lewis Villers and Rev. Alfred Hickman officiating. Burial was in Hartley cemetery, Brohard.

SLABY, VALETTA

Valetta Pepper Slaby, 80, of Barberton, Ohio, died Saturday, June 20, 1998, at her residence. She was born in Munday, the daughter of the late Silas A. and Kansada Sees Pepper. She was a homemaker and attended Clinton Freewill Church. Surviving are her husband, Charles E. Slaby, Sr.; one daugh-ter, Janice Stutler; one son, Richard H. Shimer; one brother, Dennis Pepper; one sister, Emma Belt; eight grandchildren; nine great- grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Osa Morrison, Evelyn Naylor and Dorma Frame, and two brothers, Harry Pepper and Silas Pepper. Services were not announced.

SMITH, ELLA MARIE

Ella Marie Smith, 62, of Parkersburg, died Thursday, Mar. 19, 1998, at Stonewall Jackson Hospital, Weston. She was born in Calhoun, a daughter of the late Franklin L. and Alice Belle Richards Norman. She was a housewife. Surviving are one son, John James Smith of Parkersburg; one half- brother, Henry Norman of Parkersburg; two half-sisters, Polly Ann Watson and Emily Clark, both of Parkersburg; and two grandchildren, Nicole Smith and Casey Smith, both of Parkersburg. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Junior Smith; one brother; and one sister. Services were held at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. Kermit Poling officiating. Burial was in Parkersburg Memorial Gardens.

SMITH, RUTH E.

Ruth Elizabeth Shafer Smith, 86, of The Willows Nursing Home, formerly of Parkersburg, died Friday, Apr. 3, 1998, at the nursing home. She was born in Grantsville, a daughter of the late Bertis Allen and Rebecca Ruth Pettit Shafer. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Parkersburg and was employed by Wood County Board of Education as a secretary to the superintendent of schools for 14 years. Surviving are one daughter, Judith Smith Ball of Parkersburg; one sister, Jeanette Rebecca Shafer of Parkersburg; four grandchildren, James A. Ball, Jr., of Toledo, Ohio, John R. Caldwell III of Virginia Beach, Va., and Mackenzie Ball and Tabitha Ball, both of Parkersburg; and two nieces, Dorcas Wallace of Belpre and Betty Hickman of California. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Donald Smith in 1981; one brother, Harold Shafer; and two sisters, Maude Randolph and Frances Zellers. Services were held at Mt. Olivet cemetery with Rev. William R. Thomas officiating. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 813 Market St., Parkersburg, WV 26101.

SNIDER, ESTA E.

Esta E. Snider, 84, of Parkersburg, died Monday, July 20, 1998, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital. He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late M.S. and Rilla W. Morrison Snider. He attended schools in Elizabeth. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Goodwill Sunday School Class. He retired from Union Carbide Metals, Marietta. He was a 50-year member of Parkersburg Lodge 169, AF&AM, Grand Chapter Royal Arch Masons, Jerusalem Chapter 3 RAM, Nemesis Temple AAONMS, Calvary Commandry 3 Knights Templar, where he had been a commander. He was grand representative to Grand Commandry of Mississippi, charter and 50-year member of Nemesis Temple Directors Staff, ambassador from Nemesis Temple, member of Shrine 100 Million Dollar Club, former member of Nomad Shrine Club, Pharr, Tex., charter member of Tip of Texas Shrine Club, Brownsville, Tex., Ohio Valley Shrine Club and Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, where he was a lifetime contributor. He was an honorary member of Omar Temple Directors Staff, Charleston, S.C., Zembo Temple Directors Staff, Harrisburg, Pa., Kenna Temple Directors Staff, Alexandria, VA., Anezah Temple Directors Staff, Mexico City, Mex., and Order of the Golden Crutch Shriners Hospital, Mexico City. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Anna Mae Robinson Snider; one daughter, Carol Ray of Akron; two grandsons, Scott Ray of Atlanta, Ga., and Brian Ray of Cummington, Maine; one great-grandson, Jackson Ray of Atlanta, Ga.; one sister, Eula Bonnette of Marietta; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters. Services will be held Thursday, 1 p.m., at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Dr. William R. Thomas, Dr. S. Ward Robinson and Dr.David A. Carpenter officiating. Burial will be in Kinghts of Pythias cemetery, Elizabeth, with Masonic rites by Parkersburg Lodge 169. Visitation was scheduled from 1-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday.

SNIDER, VIRGIL G.

Virgil G. Snider, 87, of Parkersburg, died Tuesday, Mar. 17, 1998, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Manley S. and Rilla D. Morrison Snider. He retired from the Town of Williamstown where he worked in the water department. He was a member of Seventh Street Methodist Church and a former police officer in Elizabeth and Williamstown. Surviving are three daughters, Iva Massey and Peggy Bradley, both of Parkersburg, and Dottie Whited of Pettyville; one son, Emmett Furner of Coolville; one sister, Eula Bonnette of Marietta; one brother, Esta Snider of Parkersburg; 14 grandchil-dren; and several great- grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his second wife, Sarah S. Snider; one sister, Mildred Hayes; four brothers, Clyde Snider, Merrill Snider, Darrell Snider and John Snider; and two daughters, Amanda Longaberger and Maebell Clark. Services were held at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. Frank Plybon officiating. Burial was in K of P cemetery, Elizabeth.

SOUTHALL, FORREST

Forrest W. Southall, 64, of Ripley, died Monday, Nov. 23, 1998, at home. He was a graduate of Ripley High School and Marietta College and received a bachelor's degree from West Virginia University. He was a retired district director of USDA's Farmers Home Administration (which included Calhoun), and taught in Braxton County schools and West Virginia University. Surviving are his wife, Mary Rosemarie Shaw Southall; two daughters, Elizabeth S. Southall of Dunbar and Anne M. Zorn of Kentucky; two step-sons, Shayne F. and David P. Shamblen of St. Albans; two step- daughters, Lisa I. Harris and Teresa A. James of St. Albans; one sister, Rose Marie Clegg of Parkersburg; aunt, Ethel Ball of Pleasant Hill; cousin, Ila Grey Snider of Pleasant Hill; and two grandsons. Services were held at Vail Funeral Home, Ripley, with Rev. William McMor an offi i ting. Burial was in Fairplain cemetery.

SOUTHWELL, VIRGINIA ELLEN

Virginia (Virgie) Ellen Southwell, 78, died Saturday, Mar. 7, 1998, at her daughter's home in Delray Beach, Fla. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Howard S. and Bertha J. Deems Jones. Her hobbies were cooking, gardening and music. She was a member of Gladwin Eagles #3292 and had been voted Mother of the Year. She was baptized by Prosperity Baptist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Shirley Cannon of Chicago, Ill., and Betty Anderson of Delray Beach; two grandchildren, Eric Anderson of Aurora, Ill., and Michelle Oatley of Delray Beach; great- granddaughter, Madison Oatley of Delray Beach; two sisters, Freda Twoey of Burton, Ohio, and Mildred Howell of Grantsville; three brothers, Willard Jones of Five Forks, and Chester Jones and Everett Jones, both of Grantsville; and second family, Grenvul Southwell, Ron Southwell, Carolyn Kareus and Vance Southwell of Michigan; 15 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and two great-great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Herbert F. Grogg; her second husband, William W. Southwell; one daughter, Vonda; two sisters, Hester and Ruth; five brothers, Bennie, Troy, Harley, Clifford and Franklin; and one grandson, Joel Southwell. Services will be held Saturday, Apr. 25, 11 a.m., at Saunders cemetery. Memorials may be made to Calhoun County Hospice Fund at Calhoun County Bank.

SPRINGSTON, FRANCES

Frances Springston, 86, of Route 2, Stumptown, W. Va., died Sunday, Jan. 4, 1998, in Parkersburg. She was born in Stumptown, a daughter of the late John Judson and Mellie Shock Springston. She was a graduate of Glenville State College and received her master's degree in education from West Virginia University. She taught school in West Virginia and Ohio for 38 years, and was also a librarian at Hamilton Junior High School. She was a member of Brooks Bird Club, active member of Farm Bureau, a member of Wood County Retired Teachers Association, West Virginia Education Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Society, American Association of University Women and Rosedale Baptist Church, Rosedale, W. Va. Surviving are three sisters, Evelyn Taggart and Adah McClain, both of Parkersubrg, and Edna Mahaffey of Pocomoke City, Md.; three nieces; three nephews; 11 great-nieces and nephews; and five great-great- nieces and nephews. Services were held at Rosedale Baptist Church, Rosedale, with the Rev. Roger Stewart officiating. Burial in Rosedale Baptist cemetery.

STALLMAN, FLORA

Flora Ellen Stallman, 91, of Parkersburg, died Thursday, Apr. 23, 1998, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Grant Ulysses and Sarah French Slider Stout. She was a member of South Parkersburg United Methodist Church. Surviving are one son, Delbert E. Stallman of Norton, Ohio; one daughter, Delma Irene McEndree of Parkersburg; one sister, Esta Hayhurst of Vienna; nine grandchildren; 22 great-grand-children; and six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Freddie Carl Stallman; one son, Freddie Junior Stallman; five brothers; and two sisters. Services were held at South Parkersburg United Methodist Church, with Rev. Kermit Poling officiating. Entombment was in Sunset Memory Gardens.

STALLMAN, LILLIAN H.

Lillian H. Stallman, 79, of Charleston, died Friday, May 15, 1998, at her residence. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Alfred Edgar and Leona Richards Stallman. She graduated from Wirt County High School and retired from W.Va. Dept. of Tax and Revenue, Charleston. She was a member of Christ United Metho-dist Church, Charleston, and former member of Elizabeth United Methodist Church. Surviving are several nieces and nephews; and special friends, John and Sally McClaugherty of Charleston. She was preceded in death by one brother, Howard Stallman, and three sisters, Eula Garretson, Gladys Cheuvront and Maude Stallman. Graveside services were held at Knights of Pythias cemetery, Elizabeth, with Rev. Paul G. Rebelo officiating. Memorial services were held at Christ United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Keith Clarke officiating.

STALNAKER. OPAL

Opal Riddell Foster Stalnaker, 99, of Billings, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, at Ravenswood Care Center. She was born in Triplett, a daughter of the late George Richard and Alice Chenoweth Riddell. She was a 1918 Spencer High School graduate, attended Marshall College, and taught school in Roane County. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Spencer. Surviving are one daughter, Eleanor Grudier of Billings; three stepdaughters, Emma Lou Chenoweth of Ravenna, Ohio, Orma Downs of Southington, Ohio, and Glenna Fleming of Arnoldsburg; one son, Thomas Vint Foster, Jr., of Belpre; two stepsons, William Harley Stalnaker of Douglas, Alaska, and Paul Stalnaker of Millstone; 15 stepgrandchildren; eight great-grand-children; and several stepgreat- grandchildren and stepgreat-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas Vint Foster; second husband, Fenton R. Stalnaker; one daughter, Opal Geraldine Phillips; three sisters, Barcelena Kemmer, Lillian Star-key and Mary McCulty; and one brother, Chatham "Chat" Riddell. Services were held at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Darrell Johnson officiating. Burial was in Eventide cemetery, Spencer.
