BOWERS, HAZEL MAE

Hazel Mae Bowers, 83, of Spencer, died Tuesday, May 20, 1997, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Kenna Jones and Addie Norman McKown. She formerly worked in several area restaurants, was a homemaker, and attended Slate United Methodist Church. Surviving are three sons, Gene Bowers, Harold Bowers and Allen Bowers, all of Spencer; one sister, Maysel Pegnard of Grapevine, Tex.; two brothers, Oris McKown of Palm Harbor, Fla., and Harley McKown of Minnora; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Bowers; one daughter, Elladean Kaiser; three brothers; and one half-sister. Services were held at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Leon Strickland officiating. Burial was in Slate/Bowers cemetery, Spencer.

BOWERS, IRWIN M.G.

Irwin Manuel Guy "Manny" Bowers, 52, of Elizabeth, died Tuesday, June 17, 1997, at his residence. He was born in Leatherbark, a son of Guy Minter Bowers and the late Thelma Blanche Carpenter Bowers. He was employed by the Dept. of Highways and was a member of Leachtown Church of Christ. Surviving, in addition to his father, are his wife, Patsy Bowers of Elizabeth; two daughters, Crystal Arthur of Creston and Angela Haddox of St. Marys; one sister, Essie Fendickel of Parkersburg; one brother, Billy Ray Bowers of Vienna; three grandchildren; and one aunt. Services were held at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, South Parkersburg, with Evangelist Charles Gibbs officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memory Gardens.

BOYCE, PAULINE L.

Pauline L. Boyce, 86, of Parkersburg, died Sunday, Sept. 7, 1997, at St. Joseph's Hospital. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Jessie and Pearl Evans Powell. She was a homemaker and member of Stephenson United Methodist Church, Parkersburg. Surviving are one daughter, Ava Owens of Parkersburg; one son, Cleon Boyce of Parkersburg; two brothers, Jessie Powell and Hagan Powell, both of Barberton, Ohio; three sisters, Marie Mace of Vienna, Velma Ferrell of Doylestown, Ohio, and Vivian Keyser of Summersville; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great- grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wesley Boyce; four brothers; and two sisters. Services were scheduled Wednesday, 2 p.m., at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. William Haynes, Jr., officiating, and burial in Sand Ridge cemetery.

BRANNON, SELDON W.

Seldon W. Brannon, 91, of Romney, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 1997, at Hampshire Memorial Hospital. He was born in Orma, a son of the late Weaver H. and Ollie Spencer Brannon. He graduated from West Virginia School for the Blind in 1927 and received his AB degree from Glenville State College in 1931, graduating magna cum laude. He received his master's degree from West Virginia University in 1947 and did graduate work at Duke University. His 39-year career was spent as teacher and principal of West Virginia School for the Blind in Romney. In 1950, he received the honor of being the only totally blind person chosen to attend the international convention for the blind in Oslo, Norway. He edited the book, "Historic Hampshire, " published in 1976 in commemoration of the bicentennial. When Hampshire Day was organized, he became the first Knight of Olde Hampshire. He was selected alumnus of the year for Glenville State College in 1968. He was a member of national and state teacher organizations, Lions Club and Rotary Club, both of Romney, and First United Methodist Church, Romney. Surviving are his caregiver of 48 years, Josephine Woods of Romney; two sisters, Ivah Campbell and Stella Chenoweth, both of Parkersburg; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Hubbs Brannon; one brother, Ottice Brannon; and two sisters, Elva Poling Kerby and Mae Offutt. Services were held at Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney. Grave-side services were held at Orma United Methodist Church Ceme-tery, Orma, with Rev. Glendon McKee officiating.

BROWN, WILLIE

Willie "Billie" Brown, 89, of Corry, Pa., died Wednesday, June 11, 1997, in Corry. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late W.H. and Hester Simers Ayers. She was a Calhoun County High School graduate and a homemaker. She was a member of Knotts Memorial United Methodist Church, Grantsville. Surviving are one daughter, Sandra Stevens of Corry; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Brown, and one daughter, Phyllis Hardman. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Alfred Hickman officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Hill cemetery.

BUCK, KENNETH L., SR.

Kenneth L. Buck, Sr., 70, of Randallstown, Md., died Sunday, June 1, 1997, at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Md. He was born in Grantsville, a son of Orvin Buck of Zanesville, Ohio, and the late Vanna Core Buck. He was a retired vice principal of Franklin Junior High School, Resisterstown, Md. Surviving in addition to his father are his wife, Patricia S. Buck of Randallstown; three sons, Jon M. Buck of Houston, Tex., Kenneth L. Buck, Jr., of Sparks, Md., and Joel R. Buck of Randalls-town; two brothers, Orvin Glen Buck of Grantsville and Garland Buck of Columbus, Ohio; and three grandchildren. Graveside services will be held Thursday, 11 a.m., at Bethle-hem cemetery, Grantsville, with Rev. James Pearson officiating. Arrangements are by Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville.

BUIE, WILLIAM

William R. Buie, 72, of Big Bend, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 1997, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center. He was born in Statesboro, Ga., a son of the late Daniel and Edith North Buie. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He owned and operated Buie's Service Center and Grocery Co., Big Bend, from 1960- 73. He was a retired postal clerk and was a member of Eureka Lodge 40, AF&AM, Grantsville, Charleston Consistory of Scottish Rite Bodies, and Nemesis Temple of Parkersburg. Surviving are his wife, Donna Parsons Buie; one daughter, Jo Ann Davison of Thomasville, Ga.; two brothers, Daniel K. Buie of Jacksonville, Fla., and Leroy Buie of Shelbyville, Tenn.; two sisters, Edith Ray Buie and Thelma Copeland, both of Jacksonville; and three grandchildren, Elisha Wolfe and Christopher Wolfe, both of Sopherton, Ga., and Bradley Hand of Thomasville, Ga. He was preceded in death by one sister, Sybil Collins. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Ronald Swiney officiating. Burial was in Goodnight cemetery, Big Bend.

BUSH, IVA

Iva Gay Boyce Bush, 92, of Tanner, died Saturday, Mar. 29, 1997, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital. She was born in Doddridge County, a daughter of the late Thomas J. and Myrtle Starkey Boyce. She earned her teaching certificate at the age of 16 and was a designer of hand-etched glassware in Clarksburg and Fairmont. She was homemaker and a Methodist. Surviving are six daughters, Margaret Dunbar of Vienna, Lois Carpenter of Parkersburg, Ruby Weaver and Christine Miner, both of Boaz, Roberta West and Donna Grogg, both of Nobe; three sons, Richard Bush of Vienna, Donald Bush of Nobe, and Cletus Bush of Franklinville, N.J.; one half-sister, Louise Clevenger of Massillion; two half-brothers, Thomas J. Boyce of Orlando, Fla., and Edmand Boyce of Tennessee; 44 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; and 25 great- great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her stepmother, Olive Hurst Boyce; husband, Arley Bush; two sons; one daughter; five brothers; three sisters; and seven grandchildren. Services were held at Trace Fork United Methodist Church, with Rev. Ronzel Roberts officiating. Burial was in Nobe cemetery.

BUTLER, LUCAS DALE

Lucas Dale Butler, 10, of Powells Point, N.C., died Friday, Dec. 27, 1996, in Children's Hospital of King's Daughters, Norfolk, Va. He was a native of Elizabeth City, N.C., and a former resident of Charleston, W.Va., and son of Ron and Jackie Sturm Butler of Powells Point. He was a former third grade student at Elk Elementary Center. Surviving in addition to his parents are one brother, Adam Dane Butler of the home; paternal grandparents, Nolan and Launa Butler of Chloe; maternal grandparents, Bernard and Janet Sturm of Powells Point, N.C. (formerly of Mt. Zion); paternal great-grandmother, Ruth Yost of Chloe; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends in West Virginia and North Carolina. Services were held at Powells Point Baptist Church with Rev. Herbert Hemingway officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

CAMPBELL, EARL J.

Earl J. Campbell, 92, of Mt. Zion, died Tuesday, April 15, 1997, at his residence following an extended illness. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late William Thomas and Stella Woodring Campbell. He was a member of Snyder Chapel Church, Annamoriah, and was retired from Operating Engineers Union, Barberton, Ohio. Surviving are a daughter-in-law, Carol Campbell of Barberton, Ohio; two granddaughters, Kellie Allen of Norton, Ohio, and Karin Schaffer of Doylestown, Ohio; three great-grandchildren, Jennifer and Kyle Allen, both of Norton, and William Schaffer of Doylestown; and one sister, Edith Campbell of Vienna. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Bennett Campbell, in 1953; one son, Rev. Gary Campbell, in 1990; one brother, Ernest Campbell; and one sister, Edna Amos. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Farley Blankenship officiating. Burial was in McCrey cemetery near Creston.

CARPENTER, K. R., SR.

Kenneth R. Carpenter, Sr., 55, of Annamoriah, died Monday, Jan. 20, 1997, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center. He was born in Spencer, a son of Audra R. Starcher Carpenter of Big Otter and the late Slathiel Carpenter. He was a member and served on the board of trustees at Cremo Community Church. Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Greta V. Sturms Carpenter; two sons, Kenneth R. Carpenter, Jr., of Arnolds-burg and Kevin Ray Carpenter of Annamoriah; one foster son, Kevin Duane Williams of Spencer; five sisters, Daisy Yoak of Grantsville, Eloise Nichols of Spencer, Linda Kincaid of Oak Hill, and Barbara Nichols and Bessie Merill, both of Northfield, Ohio; one brother, Victor Carpenter of Mt. Zion; and two grandsons. Services were scheduled Wednesday, 1 p.m., at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Glendon McKee officiating, and burial in Bryner Chapel cemetery near Annamoriah.

CARPENTER, WANDA C.

Wanda C. Carpenter, 43, of Orma, died Wednesday, April 23, 1997, at Charleston Area Medical Center's Memorial Division. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of Denver Nicholas of Orma and the late Nita June Hall Nicholas. She was employed by Americare of Dunbar as a licensed practical nurse and attended Orma United Methodist Church. Surviving in addition to her father are her husband, Howard R. Carpenter of Orma; two sons, Howard Sean Carpenter of Wilson, N.C., and Christopher Todd Carpenter of Orma; two sisters, Joyce Stout and Robin McCumbers, both of Orma; and three brothers, Dale Nicholas of Bolivia, N.C., David Nicholas of Orma and Pat Nicholas of Kelly, N.C. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Kevin Church officiating. Burial was in Orma United Methodist Church cemetery.

CARTER, GEORGE F.

George Freddie Carter, 82, of Spencer died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1997, at Roane General Hospital. He was born in Clarksburg, a son of the late James and Ollie Bennett Carter. He was a coal miner and a retired carpenter who enjoyed woodworking. He was a member of Apostolic Faith Chapel, Spencer. Surviving are one daughter, Donna Starcher of Spencer; three sons, David Carter and Danny Carter, both of Spencer, and William Carter of Geneva, Fla.; three sisters, Lovie Gunn of Mt. Zion, Stella Antell of Benwood and Nellie Grow of Peoria, Ill.; eight grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and three stepgreat- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie Ball Carter; one grandson, David Freddie Carter; and one stepgreat-grandson, Edward Allen May, Jr. Services were held at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Lawrence White officiating. Burial was in Clover cemetery near Spencer.

CASTO, ELANOR F.

Elanor F. Lantz Casto, 75, of Springfield, Ohio, died Thursday, Feb. 20, 1997, at Mercy Hospital, Springfield. She was born in Grantsville, a daughter of the late Harvey and Merle Losie Badgett Lantz. She retired from Mercy Medical Center, Springfield. Surviving are her husband, William Franklin Casto of Springfield; one daughter, Teresa Wolfenbarger of Springfield; two sisters, Ernestine Delaney and Bernadine Stevens, both of Williamstown; two brothers, William Jones and Leroy Jones, both of Williamstown; one grandson, John William Wolfenbarger of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, Thurl Lantz. Private services were held at the family's convenience.
