FRESHOUR, PAUL

Paul B. Freshour, 72, of St. Marys, died Saturday, April 19, 1997, at St. Joseph's Hospital. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Alvy and Lona G. Snyder Freshour. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in Okinawa and Guam, and a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He retired as a master sergeant from the Air Force with 20 years of service in the armed forces. He was a licensed barber and a member of St. Marys Lodge #41, AF&AM. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Betty Cross Freshour; one daughter, Linda Brothers of St. Marys; one son, Gary W. Freshour, Jr., of St. Marys; four sisters, Madelyn Reynolds of Williamstown, Geneva Lynn and Eleanor DeWees, both of Belpre, and Eloise Nutter of Marietta; one brother, Gail Freshour of Oklahoma; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Gary W. Freshour, Sr.; one sister, Lucille Beall; and three brothers, Denzil Freshour, Donald Freshour and Bobby Gene Freshour. Services were held at Ruttencutter Funeral Home, St. Marys, with Pastor Gary Saler officiating. Burial was in Maple Lane Masonic cemetery, Hebron, with full military rites conducted by St. Marys American Legion Post 79 and VFW Post 222.

FRESHOUR, THELMA R.

Thelma R. Freshour, 82, of Harmony died Saturday, Aug. 16, 1997, at Charleston Area Medical Center's General Division. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Holly H. and Lora Mae Simons Miller. She was a homemaker and enjoyed quilting. She was a member of Mount Herman Church, Harmony. Surviving are one daughter, Louverna Lynn of Charleston; two sons, Wayne Freshour of Harmony and William Freshour of Logan; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lora Freshour; one son, Willard Freshour; one sister, Edna Lukens; two brothers, Cecil Miller and Darvin Miller; one granddaughter, Lora Lynn; and one grandson, Robert Preston Freshour. Services were held at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Eldon Rhodes officiating. Burial was in Freshour cemetery, Harmony.

FROST, CHERYL A.

Cheryl A. Fross, 41, of Kokomo, Ind., died Saturday, July 19, 1997, following an extended illness. She was a daughter of Leona Conley Sears and Darrell Sears. She is survived in addition to her parents by her husband, Arthur Fross of Kokomo; two sons, Mike Fross and Scott Fross; three daughters, Theresa Fross, Sherry Antrim and Mary Sutton; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers, Stephen Sears and Michael Sears, both of Chloe; and three nieces, Becky McClung of Elkins and Rachel Sears and Julie Sears, both of Chloe. Private services were held in Indiana. Cremation followed.

FURR, WILLARD

Retired car dealer and former Grantsville mayor Willard V. Furr of Glenville died Friday, April 18, 1997, at Charleston Area Medical Center. He was born in Gilmer County, a son of the late Gilbert R. and Audree Vance Furr. He retired as owner and operator of Furr's Motor Land, Glenville. He was a former member and past president of Grantsville Lions Club, a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Grantsville Masonic Lodge, Nemesis Shrine Temple of Parkersburg and Glenville First Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Lois Hughey Furr; two daughters, Alicia Ann Gower of Rangley, Colo., and Stephanie Dawn Furr of Glenville; three sons, Willard V. "Willie" Furr II of Clarksburg, Timothy Allen "Tim" Furr of Glenville and Nicholas Furr of Jacksonville, Fla.; one brother, Richard Furr of Columbus; three sisters, Wilogene Shamblin of Akron, Rosalie Postlewaite of Spencer and Patricia Stacey of Fort Myers, Fla.; and one granddaughter. He was preceded in death by three brothers. Services were held at Glenville First Baptist Church, with Rev. Rick Perrine and Rev. Gary Knox officiating. Burial was in Marmet cemetery, Kanawha County.

GAINER, DELBERT C.

Delbert Cleo Gainer, 37, of Big Springs, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 1997, at Veterans Administration Hospital, Clarksburg. He was born in Onslo, N.C., a son of Delbert L. and Bertha Gunn Gainer of Big Springs. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Surviving, in addition to his parents, are one son, Brandon Lee Gainer of Grantsville; two brothers, Timothy L. Gainer and Ronald Gainer, both of Barberton, Ohio; and one sister, Teresa Richards of Big Springs. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Donzel Wease officiating.

GAINER, RHONDA G.

Rhonda Gay Gainer, 45, of Horner, died Thursday, July 31, 1997, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown. She was born in Arkansas, a daughter of the late Earline Graham Mathenia. She was employed at Sharpe Hospital, Weston, for 20 years and was a Protestant. Surviving are one son, Brian Gainer of Grantsville; three brothers, David Mathenia, Henry Mathenia and Jackie Mathenia, all of Texas; one sister, Betty Mack of Elmott, Tex.; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services were held at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Weston, with Rev. Jack Streets officiating.

GOFF, THELMA

Thelma Jane Goff, 74, of Unity Plaza, Parkersburg, died Wednesday, Mar. 5, 1997, at Marietta Convalescent Center. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late William and Adeline Cunningham Barnes. She was retired from Post House Restaurant, division of Greyhound Bus Co., Parkersburg, and operated other restaurants in the area. She was owner/ operator of Spanish Maine Restaurant-Truck Stop near Guysville, Ohio. She was president of Tenants Association of Unity Plaza for two years and was a member of Landmark Baptist Church. Surviving are two sons, Darrell H. 'Dike' Goff of Waverly and James Goff of Guysville; one daughter, Mary Sheppard of Parkersburg; two brothers, Fred O. Barnes of Grantsville and Shirley Barnes of Nitro; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Russell Goff, and four brothers. Services were held at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Pastor Michael Lamb officiating. Burial was in Evergreen South cemetery.

GREATHOUSE, ALLIGENE

Alligene H. "Jean" Greathouse, 76, of Grantsville, died Monday, Sept. 29, 1997, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center. She was born in Grantsville, a daughter of the late Charles and Lida Brown Harris. She was a 1940 Calhoun County High School graduate. She was employed at West Virginia Specialty Glass for 22 years and was retired from Mid-Ohio Regional Council, Parkers-burg. She served as a social worker for the Committee on Aging, Grantsville, and was a member of First Baptist Church, Grantsville. Surviving are one sister, Edith Hardwick of Grantsville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Greathouse, and two brothers, Lewis Harris and Ray Harris. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville. Burial was in Pleasant Hill cemetery.

GREATHOUSE, DESSIE

Dessie M. Greathouse, 87, of Spencer, died Sunday, June 8, 1997, at Roane General Hospital. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late John and Anna M. Miller McKown. She retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., Akron, Ohio. Surviving are two sisters, Vada Brannon of Akron and Geraldean Hall of Ashland, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Odie William "Bill" Greathouse; one infant son; one brother; and seven sisters. Services were scheduled Wednesday, 2 p.m., at John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. John W. Bowen officiating, and burial in Slate Memorial cemetery, Spencer.

GREATHOUSE, ROGER LEE, JR.

Roger Lee Greathouse, Jr., 19, of Spencer died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 1997, from injuries sustained in an auto accident near Pikeville, Ky. He was born in Spencer, a son of Debra Longfellow Great-house of Clover and Roger Lee Greathouse, Sr., of North Carolina. he was a 1997 Roane County High School graduate and an employee of American Energy. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and building construction. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandparents, Paul and June Knopp of Clover; paternal grand-parents, Roy and Madeline Greathouse of Coolville, Ohio; one sister, Marlena Dawn Greathouse of Clover; two half-sisters, Belinda King of North Carolina and Amanda Greathouse of Ripley; aunt, Cheryl Longfellow; uncles, Lee, David and Jerry Longfellow and Steve Greathouse; several other aunts, uncles and cousins; and girlfriend, Garalea Fulks of Nicut. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Kile Jarrett Longfellow, and paternal grandmother, Patricia Greathouse. Services were held at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Leon Strickland officiating. Burial was in Spencer Memorial cemetery.

GREEN, MABLE

Mable M. Green, 80, of Sand Ridge, died Friday, April 25, 1997, at Charleston Area Medical Center's General Division. She was born in Braxton County, a daughter of the late Charles and Alice Jarvis Sears. She was a homemaker. Surviving are four sons, Kenneth Pettit of Deerfield, Ohio, Larry Green of Leesville, Ohio, James Green of Evans and Cecil Green of Leroy; seven daughters, Mosell Justice of Louisville, Ohio, Genevieve Beckett of Homesville, Ohio, Mary Lou Smith of Greenbrier, Joetta Westfall of Ravenswood, Virginia Hively of Ivydale, Brenda Holcomb of Sand Ridge and Alice Green of Spencer; one brother, Ronzel Sears of Spencer; one sister, Madge Lupardas of Spencer; 38 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Green; two sons; and two daughters. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Larry Smith officiating. Burial was in Green cemetery, Duck.

GRIZZARD, CARL

Carl Quincy Grizzard, 71, of Indian Mound, Tenn., died Thursday, Jan. 11, 1997, at his residence. He was born in Stewart County, Tenn., son of Robert Grizzard and Elizabeth Parker Grizzard. He was a farmer, a veteran of World War II and Vietnam War, serving in the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Full Gospel Pentecostal Church. Surviving are his wife, Sally Alfred Grizzard, daughter of Chloe Alfred of Orma; five sons, Robert Ray Grizzard of Westville, Fla., Carl Grizzard, Jr., of Indian Mound, Dale Grizzard and Johnny Grizzard, both of Tarboro, N.C., and Robert Earl Grizzard of Dover, Tenn.; six daughters, Carlene Torsak and Pam Dube, both of Murray, Ky., Dianne Herrington of Westville, Fla., Deloris Johnson of Pegram, Tenn., Debby Branam of Whitesboro, Tex., and Polly Grizzard of Austin, Tex.; a step-daughter, Sharla Toth of Indian Mound; 32 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. Services were held at Sykes Funeral Home, Dover, with Rev. Ricky Parker and Rev. Charles Stribling officiating. Burial was in Fairview cemetery, Indian Mound.

GROVES, LINDA K.

Linda K. Groves, 42, of Arnoldsburg, died Wednesday, April 23, 1997, at her residence. She was born in Akron, a daughter of the late Ernest and Irene Badgett Starcher. She was an employee of Kellwood Co., Spencer, and attended Orma United Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband, James E. Groves of Arnoldsburg; two sisters, Caren Kightlinger of Battleground and Edith Tanner of Amoldsburg; and two brothers, Larry Starcher of Ravenna, Ohio, and Dale Starcher of Statesville, N.C. She was preceded in death by one son, Jeffrey Ryan Groves. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Robert Shannon officiating. Burial was in Orma United Methodist Church cemetery.
