RHODES, CHRISTINE M.

Christine Marie Rhodes, 75, of Ripley, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 1997, at her residence. She was born in Jackson County, a daughter of the late Arthur and Virgie Williams Hinzman. She was a homemaker and a former member of Briscoe Church. She attended Ripley Church of the Nazarene. Surviving are one daughter, Judith Underwood of Grantsville; two sisters, Phyllis Morris and Evelyn Short, both of Ripley; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert Rhodes; one son, Daniel Rhodes; one infant daughter, Kathryn Rhodes; and one brother, Wayne Hinzman. Services were held by Vail Funeral Home, Ripley, with Rev. David Henthorn and Rev. Denny Shirer officiating. Burial was in Evans cemetery, Gay.

RICHARDS, HAROLD J.

Harold (Henry) J. Richards, 74, of Fairview Park, Ohio, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 1997, after a long illness. He was born in Big Springs, son of the late Clelle and Georgia Wilson Richards. He was retired from Steel Improvement Forge Co. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Fairview Park. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Greye Haddox Richards; two sons, Harold Gene Richards and Edward Richards, both of Omstead Falls, Ohio; two grandsons, Blair and Derek Richards; two granddaughters, Linnea and Shannon Richards; two brothers, Eugene and Jack Richards, both of Big Springs; and one sister, Helen Murphy of Brohard. He was preceded in death by six brothers. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park.

RICKMAN, DERONDA J.

Deronda Jane Rickman, 56, of Williamstown, died Thursday, April 10, 1997, in Doddridge County. She was born in Glenville, a daughter of the late Arden G. and Freeda Opal Woofter Jones. She received her bachelor's degree in 1962 from Glenville State. She was a substitute teacher in Wood County and taught elementary school. She was a deaconess at Boaz Baptist Church and taught children's Sunday School. She was a member of American Baptist Women's Missions and West Virginia Baptist Convention Prayer Wall Ministry. She was a West Virginia 4-H All-Star. Surviving are one son, David H. Rickman of Bunker Hill; three daughters, Radonna Jean Mullenax of Onancock, Va., Cheryl Darlene Adams of Elizabeth and Tina Eileen Rickman of Williamstown; two brothers, Lyndall L. Jones of Parkersburg and Randall C. Jones of Mt. Zion; two sisters, Wandalene Drake of Glenville and Tonabell J. Turner of Elizabeth; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother and one sister. Services were held at the Chapel of Remembrance, Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Pastor Bob Alfred officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memory Gardens, Garden, of Ascension, with military rites conducted by American Legion Post 15.

RIFFLE, BRENDA D.

Brenda D. Riffle, 41, of St. Marys, died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 1997, at her sister's home in Big Springs. She was born in Pine Grove, a daughter of Ivan Cain, Sr., of Spring Valley and Mona Y. Holcomb Elder of New Martinsville. She was a homemaker and attended Maple Lane Freewill Baptist Church, Pleasants County. She enjoyed raising flowers, . Surviving, in addition to her parents, are three sons, James E. Cain of Paden City, Edward F. Riffle, Jr., and Kenneth D. Riffle, both of St. Marys; three brothers, Wayne Cain of New Martinsville, David Cain of Lancaster, Ohio, and Thomas "J.R." McDonald of Parkersburg; and two sisters, Teresa Six of Cairo and Karen Collins of Big Springs. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward F. Riffle, Sr. Services were held at McCullough-Rogers Funeral Home, Pennsboro, with Rev. Frank Lambert officiating. Burial was in Saunders cemetery, Big Springs.

RIGGS, GLADYS D.

Gladys D. Riggs, 90, of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, formerly of Grantsville, died Friday, Aug. 22, 1997, at Traditions Health Care Center, Cuyahoga Falls. She was born in Hur, a daughter of the late Joseph S. and Sarah Kerby Riggs who was a niece of the famous turn-of-the century political leader, William Jennings Bryan. She was raised on Barnes Run and attended a one-room school house at Hur that had been built by her father. She attended high school at Grantsville in the old red brick courthouse. She was a graduate of Glenville State College where she earned her master's degree in education. She was a retired elementary school teacher in Summit County School System, Akron, and in Hur and Charleston schools. She was a lifetime member and benefactor of Mount Olive United Methodist Church, Hur, which was also built by her father. Surviving are one brother, Forest Riggs of Glenville; and three nephews, William Lamb of Cuyahoga Falls, Bob Riggs of Charlottesville, Va., and Harold Lamb of Charleston Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Brad McBee officiating. Burial was in Hur cemetery.

ROACH, ERNEST

Ernest Roach, 62, of Belpre, died Friday, Mar. 21, 1997, at his residence. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Kenna and Thelma Sampson Roach. He was retired from DuPont and was a member of American Motorcycle Association. Surviving are his wife, Ada Wildman Roach of Belpre; one son, Gary Roach of Belpre; three daughters, Deborah Lane, Karen Elder and Kathy Croft, all of Belpre; three brothers, Albert Roach of Parkersburg, Willard Roach of Little Hocking and Rex Roach of Belpre; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Private graveside services were held at Fairview cemetery.

ROBERTS, L. MAXINE

L. Maxine Roberts, 65, of Gassaway, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 1997, at the residence of her daughter. She was born in Revere, Gilmer County, a daughter of the late Otto and Hallie Selmon Amos. She was retired from Kenney Shoe Co. and was parts manager for Chapman Auto Sales, Glenville. She was a member of Engle United Methodist Church, Gassaway. Surviving are her husband, Rev. Lorous Roberts; two daugh-ters, Beverly Hawkins of Orange Park, Fla., and Angela Isenhart of Glenville, with whom she resided; one sister, Leona Roberts of Glenville; two brothers, Allie Amos of Vienna and Don Amos of Clarksburg; four grandsons; and one great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by one brother, Russell Amos. Memorial services were held at Richard Roach Funeral Home, Gassaway, with Rev. Phillip Hickman and Dr. Mac Bailes officiating. Services were also held at Chapel Baptist Church, Nobe, with Rev. Loren Roberts and Rev. Robert Nicholas officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

ROGERS, CLAUDE R.

Claude R. Rogers, 88, of Shock, died Wednesday, May 14, 1997, at Roane General Hospital. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Oscar and Dorothy Rogers. He was a retired farmer. Surviving are five sons, Virgil Rogers of Winston-Salem, N.C., Basil Rogers of Warren, Ohio, Robert Rogers of Gallipolis, Nelson Rogers of Shock and Jim Rogers of Forestville, Md.; six daughters, Etta Cottrell of Shock, Glenna Thomas, Erma Collins and Shirley Collins, all of Marion, Va., Brenda George of Clarksville, Tenn., and Maxine McCumbers of Orma; one sister, Edna Robinson of Clarington, Pa.; and one brother, Roy Rogers of Grantsville. He was preceded in death by his wife, Clara M. Rogers; two daughters; and one son. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Elder Charles Fisher officiating. Burial was in Cottrell cemetery, Shock.

ROGERS, ELLA GAY

Ella Gay Bailey Rogers, 95, of St. George, Tucker County, died Friday, Nov. 29, 1996, at Davis Memorial Hospital, Elkins, after a short illness. She was born in Nicut, a daughter of the late Winfield Scott and Elizabeth Losie Jane Hicks Bailey. She was a Protestant and a homemaker. Surviving are two sons, Lester Forest Rogers of Baltimore, Md., and Captain Ford Rogers of Arnoldsburg; two daughters, Artie Jewel Cogar of Webster Springs and Doris Emogene Myers of St. George; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; eight great-great- grandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren; 10 stepgreat-great- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Gruder Rogers, Sept. 8, 1982; two daughters, Orva Gay McCumbers and Tina Garnett Myers; two grandchildren, Chester Lee Rogers and Amelia Carman 'Amy' Snyder-, one great-grandson, Aaron Lane Myers; four brothers, General Floyd Bailey, Robert Floomer Bailey, Homer Belden Bailey, and Emory Calvin Bailey; seven sisters, Nora Burkhammer, Victory Alice Prince Harris, Kathryn Louise Booher, Flora Bell Cogar, Standing Hollie Robinson, Pheba Ollie Crawford McCarty, and Lootie Estell Stella McCarty. Services were held at Greenlief-Combs Funeral Home, Parsons, with pastor Patrick Cassidy of St. George officiating. A special tribute was given by her grandson, Lieutenant Colonel Charles Vernon Myers of Avondale, Ariz. Burial was in Minnora cemetery, Minnora, with services conducted by her grandson, Robert Keith Rogers of Baltimore.

ROGOWSKI, DOMINIC and MADGE

Dominic (Tom) Rogowski, 90, and Madge Freshour Rogowski, 81, of Parma, Ohio, died in May, 1997, on the same day. Both had been ill for an extended time. They had made their home in Cleveland, Ohio, and Parma for many years. She was the daughter of Charlotte Freshour of Pleasant Hill. They are survived by one son, Michael, and two grandchildren, Ryan and Dawn. She is survived by five sisters, Rhuie Plant of Parma, Kathleen of Richfield, Ohio, Thelma of Arizona, Zelma of Vienna and Geraldine Frederick of Parkersburg. Private services were arranged by Craciren Funeral Home. There were cremated and buried in Parma.

ROLLINS, MYRTLE

Myrtle Rollins, 90, of Charleston, died Sunday, April 6, 1997, at Americare of Dunbar. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Sylvianus Van "S.V." and Cora Burrows Richards. Surviving are four sons, Vernon Rollins of Seattle, Wash., Ray Rollins of Silver Springs, Fla., Richard Rollins of Charleston and Ronald Rollins of Amissville, Va.; four daughters, Ruby Donnally of John's Island, S.C., Margie Nesser of Canton, Ohio, Connie Farris and Jeanette Fowler, both of Charleston; one sister, Edith Swisher of Florida; and 24 grandchildren. Services were held at Wilson Funeral Home, Charleston, with Rev. Lawrence Fowler officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

ROSE, THELMA M.

Thelma Morgan Rose, 79, of Williamstown, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 1997, at Fairfax, Va. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Roy and Nora Whytsell Morgan. She was a Glenville State College and West Virginia University graduate. She retired in 1981 from Williamstown Elementary School after 38 years as a teacher. She was a member of Williamstown Woman's Club and Retired Teachers Association. Surviving are one daughter, Carolyn Ihrig of Fort Myers, Fla.; four sisters, Blanche Young of Falls Church, Va., Janice Hall of Frametown, Ruth Karem of Davis, Calif., and her twin sister, Velma Wiggins of Houston, Tex.; one grandson; one grand-daughter; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, Roma Morgan. Services were scheduled Thursday, 11 a.m., at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Vienna, with Rev. Gene Hutton officiating, and burial in Mt. Zion cemetery. Visitation was scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

RUNNION, VONIE M.

Vonie M. Runnion, 65, of Spencer, died Wednesday, June 4, 1997, at Roane General Hospital. She was born in Braxton County, a daughter of the late George and Sissie Nottingham Davis. She was a homemaker. Surviving are one daughter, Jane Golden of Reedy; one sister, Toots Metz of Stumptown; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William "Jake" Runnion; one son, George E. Runnion; one sister; four brothers; and one great- grandson. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Larry Greathouse officiating. Burial was in Clover cemetery, Clover, Roane County.

SAMPSON, KENNETH

Kenneth Dewain Sampson, 54, of Peniel, died Saturday, Mar. 1, 1997. He was born in Grantsville, a son of the late Wilburn and Vergie Husk Sampson. He was a U.S. Army veteran of Vietnam War and was a mechanic. Surviving are his wife, Delia Milhoan Sampson; one daughter, Carolyn Wheeler of Ripley; two sons, Donald Sampson of Peniel and Kenneth Lee Sampson of Gay; and one granddaughter, Jessica Wheeler of Ripley. Services were held at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Herman Robinson officiating. Burial was in Mt. Zion cemetery, near Spencer.
