SAMPSON, RUBY H.

Ruby H. Sampson, 75, of St. Marys, formerly of Sand Ridge, died Monday, Nov. 3, 1997, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late William D. and Nellie Groves Dillon. She was a former employee of Rubber Fabricators, Grantsville, and Kenny Shoe Co., Glenville. Surviving are three sons, Willard Sampson of St. Marys, Otis Sampson of Clayton, S.C., and Kenneth Sampson of Millstone; two daughters, Ellen Coen of Barberton, Ohio, and Mary West of Sand Ridge; two brothers, William D. Dillon of Barberton and J.B. "Sam" Dillon of Sand Ridge; one sister, Greta Crawford of Sand Ridge; one half- brother, John Dillon of Arnoldsburg; 14 grand-children; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oral "Hoot" Sampson. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Glendon McKee officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Hill cemetery.

SCHOOLCRAFT, RUFUS

Rufus L. Schoolcraft, 91, of Parkersburg, formerly of Munday, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 1997, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital. He was born at Triplett, Roane County, a son of the late Everett and Arnie King Schoolcraft. He was a farmer and a timberman. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. James McIntyre officiating. Burial was in Belt cemetery, Munday.

SCHRECKENGOST, VENA

Vena M. Schreckengost, 92, of Parkersburg, died Tuesday, April 29, 1997, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital. She was born in Arnoldsburg, a daughter of the late Alan and Margaret Whytsell Schoolcraft. She was a former employee of S.S. Kresge and J.C. Penney. She was a member of Order of Eastern Star and Gospel Mission Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis E. Schreckengost; four brothers; and four sisters. Services were held at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Pastor Dean Ash officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memory Gardens.

SEALEY, BERTHA A.

Bertha Alberta Sealey, 87, of Vincent, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 1997, at her residence. She was born in Grantsville, a daughter of the late Eli and Berdie Current Louk. She was a homemaker and a member of Veto Gospel Tabernacle. She enjoyed quilting and crocheting. Surviving are one son, Carl J. Sealey of Vincent; four grand- children; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle Levi Sealey; one daughter, Nellie Sealey; three brothers, Lloyd Bernard Louk, Glenn Dale Louk and Jessie Earl Louk; and one sister, Bessie Pearl Louk. Services were held at Leavitt Funeral Home, Belpre, with Rev. Bob Cornell officiating. Burial was in Veto cemetery.

SEARS, RONAL C.

Ronal C. Sears, 61, of Philippi, formerly of Nicut, died Thursday, Oct. 9, 1997, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown. He was born in Clay County, a son of the late Virgil and Belvia Arnold Sears. He was a U.S. Army veteran and retired from Crest Manor Homes of Martinsburg. Surviving are his wife, Charlotte A. King Sears; five daughters, Teresa Sears, Belvia Koppisch and Shannon Sears, all of Martinsburg, Kimberly Sidwell of Philippi and Paula Hosey of Grantsville; one son, Jeffery Ronal Sears of Martinsburg; three sisters, Wavajean DeLaGrange of Diamond, Ohio, Virginia Metheney of Newton Falls, Ohio, and Janet Mollohan of Barberton, Ohio; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Fay Kalamjka. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg. Burial was in King cemetery, Nicut.

SETTLE, MINNIE

Minnie Settle, 84, of Orma, died Saturday, April 12, 1997, at Roane General Hospital. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Lee and Amanda McCune Groves. She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Orma. Surviving are three sons, Orrville R. Settle of Orrville, Ohio, and Benjamin Settle and Warner Settle, both of Orma; two daughters, Effie Parsons of Orma and Beaulah Suttle of Elyria, Ohio; one brother, Theadore Groves of Big Otter; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Haven Settle. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg. Burial was in Orma United Methodist Church cemetery.

SIERS, DOY M.

Doy M. Siers, 77, of Big Bend, died Monday, Nov. 3, 1997, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center. He was born in Richwood, a son of the late Charles and Malissa Cook Siers. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a retired appliance service technician for Grantsville Appliance Co., Grantsville. He attended Five Forks Community Church. Surviving are his wife, Irene Metz Siers of Big Bend; one daughter, Martha Harris of Big Bend; one son, Terry Siers, address unknown; two brothers, Holden Siers of Big Bend and Olin Siers of Mt. Zion; two sisters, Ruby Jones of Grantsville and Esta Jones of Five Forks; and three grandchildren, Doy Harris and Deidra Harris, both of Big Bend, and Chad Siers of Joliette, Ill. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Bernard Siers, Ronzel Siers and Ermine Siers. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Alfred Hickman and Rev. Randy Wilson officiating. Burial was in Siers Family cemetery, Big Bend.

SIMERS, GEORGE I.

George I. Simers, 93, of Norton, Ohio, died Friday, May 16, 1997, at Barberton, Ohio. He was born in Grantsville, a son of the late Silas and Cordelia Shimer Simers. He was an oil rig builder for J.P. VanCamp and a member of Cherry Fork United Methodist Church, White Pine. Surviving are one daughter, Freeda Digman of Norton; one sister, Lelah VanCamp of Grantsville; three grandchildren; six great- grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Simers; and one great- grandson. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville. Burial was in Kight cemetery with Rev. Alfred Hickman officiating.

SIMMONS, RAYMOND

Raymond L. Simmons, 53, of Kenansville, N.C., died Sunday, Jan. 12, 1997, at Duplin General Hospital, Kenansville. He was born in Gilmer County, a son of Ethel Sims Simmons of Tanner and the late Levi Clark Simmons. He was a farmer and timberman. He attended Tanner United Methodist Church. Surviving in addition to his mother are one daughter, Pamela Frederick of Grantsville; three sisters, Charlotte Wilson of Stouts Mills, Patty Shumaker of Whipple and Anita Hartshorn of Tanner; two brothers, Gary Simmons and Nelson Simmons, both of Tanner; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one infant brother and one infant sister. Services were held at Ellyson Mortuary, Glenville, with Rev. Ronzel Roberts officiating. Burial was in Union cemetery, Sinking Creek, Gilmer County.

SIMMONS, WILMA

Wilma Simmons, 76, of Parkersburg, died Saturday, Mar. 15, 1997, at her son's residence in Parkersburg. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Dolly Whipkey. She worked at Storck's Baking Co., Parkersburg. She was a homemaker and a Baptist. Surviving are seven sons, Harlan Simmons of Pennsylvania, James Simmons, Oria B. Simmons, Jr., and Rickey Simmons, all of Parkersburg, Mickey Simmons and Wayne Simmons, both of Oklahoma, and Larry Simmons of Kentucky; five daughters, Ina Baxter and Shirley Clelland, both of Oklahoma, Linda Metz and Lois Gailbraith, both of Florida, and Jessica Simmons of Parkersburg; one brother, Bernard Whipkey of Nobe; one sister, Winifred Sellers of Parkersburg; 43 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and two great-great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oria B. Simmons; one son, Howard Charles Simmons; and one daughter, Alberta Mae Simmons. Services were held at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Parkersburg, and Chapel Baptist Church, Nobe, with Pastor Randy Payne officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

SIMS, WALKER P., JR.

Walker P. (June) Sims, Jr., 71, of Big Bend, died Friday, April 18, 1997, in Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center, following a long illness. Born in Calhoun County, he was a son of the late Walker P. and Arzona Richards Sims. He was retired in 1988 from Eureka Pipeline Co. with 32 years of service. Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Betty Jean Webb Sims; one son and daughter-in-law, Walker Gary and Marjorie Jane Sims of Grantsville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Thomas Lee and Patricia Jean Mowery of Creston and Nolan and Nancy D. Ritchie of Grantsville; six grandchildren, Christopher Cabe Sims of Norfolk, Va., Matthew Sims, Zeb Ritchie and Melanie Ritchie, all of Grantsville, and Shannon Collins and Sabrina Collins of Glenville; one sister, Bonnie Buck of Big Bend; six brothers, Denver Sims of Brohard, Eugene Sims of Kirkland, Ohio, Freddie Sims and James Sims, both of Big Bend, Billy Sims of Thornville, Ohio, and Rick Sims of Cox's Mills. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold Sims and Willis Sims; and one sister, Francis Sims. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. D.L. Kirby officiating. Burial was in Hunt cemetery, Big Bend.

SINES, EDITH L.

Edith Lavonne Sines, 75, formerly of Evandale Terrace, Parkersburg, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997, at Americare-Arlington Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late J.M. Ball and Daisy Wyer Ball McFee. She was a former employee of JCPenney and Wood County Board of Education. She was a member of River Hill United Methodist Church. Surviving are her godson, Seth Cantwell Wells of Cairo; two sisters, Julia Varner of Petroleum and Annie Williams of Newark; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles B. "Bus" Sines; her stepfather, Bruce McFee; and two brothers, Amos M. Bell and Roger L. Bell. Services were held at Kimes Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. Earl Geisler officiating. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery.

SMITH, JOE A.

Joe A. Smith, 89, of Albany, Ohio, died Monday, Dec. 15, 1997, at Brookside Manor Nursing Home, Plains, Ohio. He was born in Grantsville, a son of the late Walter E. and Ida Rumball Smith. Surviving are five daughters, Mildred Hunt of Valley Fork, Anna Simmons of Orrville, Ohio, Betty Brabham of Reedy, Vanessa Scott and Brenda Whaley, both of Albany; seven sons, Joe Smith, Jr., of Spencer, Ken Smith and Steve Smith, both of Albany, Roger Smith of Lancaster, Ohio, Danny Smith of McConnelsville, Ohio, Bill Smith and Jack Smith, both of Port Clinton, Ohio; two brothers, Harry Smith of Oak Hill and Godfrey Smith of Smithfield, Va.; 21 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Edith Tanners Smith; second wife, Opal Reedy Smith; two sons, Harold and Walter Smith; three sisters, Grace Kyer, Virginia Sawyer and Genevieve Perrine; two brothers, John Smith and Jim Smith; and one grandchild, Denette Brabham. Services were held at Bigony-Jordan Funeral Home, Albany. Burial was in Athens County Memorial Gardens, near Albany.
