Phyllis L. Roth, 73, of Parkersburg, died Wednesday, Mar. 15, 1995, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Roscoe and Vena McKee Lockney. She was retired from the U.S. Treasury Dept. of Public Debt as a researcher. She was a member of Farm Bureau Auxilliary and St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Surviving are her husband L. Howard Roth; three daughters, Marjorie Allen of Columbus, Jane Furr of Parkersburg and Susan Lowe of Parkersburg; one sister, Sue Wilson of Marietta; one brother, Roscoe Lockney of Parkersburg; six grandchildren; and four great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother. Services were held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Rev. David Brighton officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olivet cemetery.

Estel Sampson, 81, of Coolville, died Friday, June 2, 1995, at Arcadia Nursing Center, Coolville. She was born in Arnoldsburg, a daughter of the late Columbus and Jane Santey Groggs. She was a homemaker. Surviving are one son, Rick Sampson of Coolville; five daughters, Gladys Barton and Ida Mae Spradlin of Coolville, Marjorie Benedum of Reedsville, Ohio, Anna Weekley of Guysville, Ohio, and Carolyn C. Smith of Mansfield, Ohio; two sisters, Ida Camp and Beulah Cole, both of Akron, Ohio; 26 grandchildren; and 43 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hurdle Sampson; two sons, Daris Sampson and David Sampson; one sister, Ermel Rogers; two brothers, Lee Groggs and Ora Groggs; one grand-daughter; and one great-granddaughter. Services were held at White Funeral Home, Coolville, with Rev. Cecil Morrison officiating. Burial was in Eden cemetery, Reedsville.

Mary Sampson, 82, of Massillon, Ohio, formerly of Orma, died Monday, Aug. 21, 1995, at Massillon Community Hospital after an extended illness. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late James and Anna Fleming Lambert. She was a homemaker. Surviving are three daughters, Carol Marjorias of Elyria, Ohio, and Jean Sampson and Margaret McClain, both of Massillon; one sister, Fern Lambert of Akron; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two daughters and two sons. Services were held at Orma United Methodist Church, with Rev. Glendon McKee officiating. Burial was in Fleming cemetery, Orma.

Ruth McCartney Schiffbauer, 62, of Morgantown, died Sunday, June 25, 1995, at her residence. She was born in Monongalia County, daughter of the late Loyd and Georgie Stump McCartney. She was a retired cook at Ridgedale School with 23 years of service. She was a member of Rush Run Baptist Church of Calhoun County. She is survived by three sons, Donald Schiffbauer, Tim Schiffbauer and Terry Schiffbauer, all of Morgantown; three daughters, Wanda Sue George, Cindy Sue Helmick and Sandra Jean Judy, all of Morgantown; three brothers, Frank McCartney, Foster McCartney and Eugene McCartney, all of Morgantown; five sisters, Mary Daugherty of Pt. Marion, Pa., Edith Saylor and Emily Petrich, both of Morgantown, Carolyn Mathew of Arthurdale, and Linda McFadden of Gans, Pa.; 10 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and several cousins in Calhoun County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Schiffbauer, in 1988, and one sister, Emma Jean Schiffbauer. Services are scheduled on Thursday, 11 a.m., at Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home Chapel of Prayer, with Rev. Dr. Stacy Groscup officiating, and burial in Lawnwood cemetery.

Charles F. Schmidt, 87, of Glenville, died Wednesday, Nov. 1, 1995, at Stonewall Jackson Hospital, Weston, after an extended illness. He was born in Hamstead, N.Y., a son of the late John and Elizabeth Schmidt. He was a former maintenance man and a member of Glenville Church of God. Surviving are his wife, Margaret Schuchardt Schmidt; one son, Charles F. Schmidt, Jr., of Burnsville; and one sister, Elizabeth Godshall of Millville, N.J. He was preceded in death by one sister and one brother. Services were held at Glenville Church of God, with Rev. Ronnie Besson officiating. Burial was in Cedarville cemetery.

Carl B. Sears, 59, of Elizabeth, died Friday, Aug. 11, 1995, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg, after an extended illness. He was born in Nicut, a son of the late Velva Sears Lilly. He retired as a foreman with nearly 29 years of service from O. Ames Co. and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Parkersburg. He was a Wirt County resident since 1979, having moved from Parkersburg, and was an avid golfer. Surviving are his wife of 16 years, Joanne Jarvis Sears; two daughters, Mary Ann Stinespring of Parkersburg and Sandy Sears of Arlington, Va.; three step-sons, Robert Arthur of Waynesville, Mo., Greg Arthur of Creston and John Arthur of Parkersburg; two step- daughters, Robin Davis of Mineral Wells and Tammy Strong of Elizabeth; two sisters, Linda Strong of South Charleston, Ohio, and Betty Wicks of Marysville, Ohio; stepfather, James Lilly of West Virginia; five grandchildren; and eight step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Timothy Alan Sears, in 1990. Memorial services were held at Busch Funeral Home, Elizabeth, with Rev. Lewis D. Villers officiating, and military rites by American Legion Post 55, Elizabeth.

She was born in Chloe, a daughter of the late Samuel B. and Monna Mae Burns Conley. She was a former employee of Limco Products Co., Akron, attended Walker United Methodist Church, and was a member of White Oak Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Glen W. Oscar L. Shields, 68, of Cedarville, died Friday, Dec. 1, 1995, at his residence. He was born in Gilmer County, a son of Ella Belknap Shields of Grantsville and the late Oran Shields. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, and a former employee of Kinney Shoe Co. He attended Rush Run Baptist Church. Floyd Shrader, 77, of Creston, Little Creek community, died Monday, Jan. 9, 1995, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Parkersburg, after an extended illness. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Henry and Doris Smith Shrader. He retired from the oil production business and was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He was a Christian. Surviving are his wife, Dolly Shrader; two sons, Boyd Shrader and Dale Shrader, both of Newark; one daughter, Gertrude Wyer of Elizabeth; five sisters, Jesse Johnson and Leola Fazenbaker, both of Morgantown, Geraldine Hall and Genevia Cunningham, both of Parkersburg, and Mildred Smith of Big Bend; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by seven sisters and five brothers. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. William D. Stutler and Rev. Lewis Villers officiating. Burial was in Cooper cemetery, near Creston.

Delores K. Simmons, 35, of Mt. Zion, died Thursday, Aug. 31, 1995, at Elder Care, Ripley, after an extended illness. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of Flossie Cottrill Simmons of Mt. Zion and the late Dennis Simmons. Surviving are three sisters, Dian James of Carrollton, Ga., Della Starcher of Mt. Zion and Alma Graffires of Chesapeake, Va.; five brothers, David Simmons of Ripley, Danny Simmons of Decherd, Tenn., Allen Simmons of Alabama, Johnny Simmons of Carrollton, and Donald Simmons of Mt. ZELMA G. SIMONTON
Zelma G. Simonton, 87, of Elizabeth, died Sunday, June 25, 1995, at her residence after an extended illness. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Charles and Laura Arthur Richards. She was a graduate of Salem Beauty College, Akron, Ohio, and owned and operated Zelma's Beauty Shop, Elizabeth, for 18 years. She was a longtime member of Mary Elizabeth Circle and was elected twice as worthy matron of Wirt Chapter 113, Order of Eastern Star. Surviving are one stepson, Glenn Simonton of Parkersburg; three sisters, Elva Thomas of Lowell, Golda Swires of Akron and Floda Duskey of Beverly; three step-grandsons; and six step-great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Bee Hopkins, in 1956; second husband, Thomas Simonton, in 1975; and two sisters, Dolly Richards and Martha Snyder. Services were scheduled Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Elizabeth United Methodist Church, with Rev. Michael E. Taylor and Rev. Paul D. Russell officiating, and burial in Mt. Olive cemetery, Finch, Ritchie County.
