SMITH, CLEO

Cleo Smith, 81, of Akron, Ohio, died Monday, Feb. 20, 1995, at home of a sudden illness. He was born in Grantsville, a son of J. W. and Maude Ward Smith. He was employed as an electrician for Firestone Tire and Rubber for 27 years, retiring in 1969. Surviving are a daughter, Dorothy Segers of Franklin Township, Ohio; brother, Victor Smith of Akron; sister, Bessie Lynch of Mt. Zion; grandchildren, David Segers of Akron, Sherry and Darla Segers of Columbus, Ohio, Linda Nelson of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; and great- grandchildren, Tyler and Rachel Nelson. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Estella Mae Stutler Smith; and four brothers, Foster, Jay, Paul and Albert. Services were held at Bacher Funeral Home and burial was in Lockwood cemetery, Ohio.

SMITH, EDITH J.

Edith J. Smith, 86, of Norton, Ohio, formerly of Mt. Zion, died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 1995, at Doylestown Health Care Center, Doylestown, Ohio, after an extended illness. She was born in Grantsville, a daughter of the late Sydney and Della Stalnaker Stevens. She had resided in Norton since 1947, where she retired from Ideal Nursing Home. She was a member of Sherman Church of Christ, Norton. Surviving are three sons, Duane Smith of Rittman, Ohio, Don Smith of Barberton, Ohio, and Del Smith of Norton; 11 grandchildren, 19 great- grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Holly Smith, in 1980; one brother, Lora Stevens; and one sister, Carrie Williams. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Glendon McKee officiating. Burial was in St. Paul cemetery, Mt. Zion.

SMITH, HAROLD D.

Harold D. Smith, 57, of Brohard, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 1995, at his residence. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of Mildred Shrader Smith of Big Bend and the late Jay W. Smith, Jr. He was self-employed and an avid outdoorsman. Surviving are two sisters, Lenore Jones and Charolette Dickson, both of Big Bend. Services were scheduled Wednesday, 2 p.m., at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Ronald Swiney officiating, and burial in Smith Family cemetery near Brohard.

SMITH, KATHRYN LOUISE

Kathryn Louise Smith, 57, of Weston, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 1995, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, after a brief illness. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late James H. and Mary Barr Smith. Surviving are one son, Ronald Lee Smith of Weston; two brothers, Alvin Smith of Nebo and Roger Smith of Mt. Zion; and two sisters, Jerl Smith of Spencer and Emma Brake of Cleveland. She was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Glendon McKee officiating. Burial was in Mt. Zion cemetery.

SMITH, MICHAEL PAUL

Michael Paul Smith, 18, of Sugar Camp Road, Big Bend, died Tuesday, May 23, 1995, at his residence of an accidental electrocution. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of Gerald Glen Smith and Helen Ann McIntyre, both of Big Bend. Surviving in addition to his parents are one brother, Tony G. Smith of Big Bend; three sisters, Ellen Sueann Smith and Betty Ann Tanner, both of Big Bend, and Shirley Sue Beck of New Jersey; one niece, Riva Tanner of Big Bend; three nephews, Walter Wilson, and Joseph and James Beck, all of New Jersey; aunts and uncles, Boots and Herb Yoak, Nancy and Darl Chadwell, Ruth and Delmas Kellar, and Linda and Harold Kellar, all of Big Bend, Shirley and Denzil Kellar of New Jersey, Geraldine and Al Sauers, Leona and Buck Hartley, all of Vienna, Katherine and Tom Cratty, Emma Risinger, all of Pennsylvania, and Mildred and Gale Floyd of California; and 23 cousins. He was preceded in death by grandparents, Opal and Paul Smith of Munday and Ruth and Elmer Kellar of Big Bend. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Alfred Hickman officiating. Burial was in Snyder cemetery, Creston.

SNIDER, EDNA JANE

Edna Jane Richards Snider, 77, died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 1995, of breast cancer, at her home in Billings, Mont. She was born in Cremo (a town her merchant father named after a 5- cent cigar), the daughter of George Albert Richards and Luverna Arthur. She graduated from Calhoun County High School in 1936, and attended Marshall College and Glenville State College in pre-medical studies. She married William Dale Snider on Aug. 28, 1939, and while he worked in the Baltimore shipyards during World War II, she helped her father with gas leases and general business, eventually owning and running a hardware store from 1946 to 1954. The family relocated to Arizona in 1954 where she lived until her divorce in 1971. She moved to Montana in 1973. She was an artist who worked in all media. Surviving are a son, Robert of Billings; a brother, Walter Carl Richards of Dublin, Ohio; three grandchildren, Kristin Bachman and Robert Jon Snider of Los Angeles, and Erika Sims of Billings; and two great-grandchildren, Kellen and MaKena Sims. Arrangements were not announced. Memorials to St. Vincent Foundation, 1233 N. 30th St., Billings, MT 59101, or Big Sky Hospice, 1041 N. 29th St., Billings, MT 59101.

SNYDER, EDNA O.

Edna O. Snyder, 81, of Tallmadge, Ohio, passed away on Sunday, April 23, 1995. She was born in West Virginia and lived in the Suffield/ Uniontown area all her life. She was a homemaker and a member of Trinity Nazarene Church. She is survived by son, John Snyder of Madison, Ohio; daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Tom Lee of Uniontown; daughter-in-law, Karen Laufenbuger of Hartville, Ohio; grand-children, Randy Tonkovich, Beth Ann Faulk, Malinda Sorboro, Sheri Baker, Chris Lee, and Jennifer, Alexis, and Diane Snyder; brother, Edward Starcher; and sisters, Geneva Ufert, Elizabeth Williams, Madeline Creekmore, and Donna Unger. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest E., in 1988; a son, James, in 1977; and a grandson, Jay Tonkovich, in 1979. Services were held at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, Uniontown, with Rev. William D. Lee officiating. Burial was in Hillside Memorial Park.

SPENCER, PATRICK S.

Patrick Seldon Spencer, 88, of Worthington Manor Health Care Center, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 1995, at the center. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Rev. Herbert and Roxie Haverty Spencer. He was a farmer until 1944. He went to work for Ames Co. at the start of World War II, retiring after 25 years of service. Surviving are two sons, Eugene Spencer of Vincent and Austil Spencer of Richfield, Ohio; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters and six brothers. Services were held at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. Irene Lovett officiating. Burial was in Clover cemetery, Roane County.

SPENCER, RAYMOND D.

Raymond D. Spencer, 84, of Mineral Wells, died Friday, Sept. 8, 1995, at his residence after an extended illness. He was born in Oka, a son of the late Emory and Serepta White Spencer. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in California in the 1930s and as a Naval civilian employee at Mare Island Naval Base, California, during the war. He later worked in the real estate business in Parkersburg during the 1940s and 50s. He moved to Plant City, Fla., where he lived for 17 years, serving as director of maintenance at International Mineral and Chemicals Corp. He retired to Mineral Wells in 1985. He served as superin-tendent of Advent Christian Church, Clover, in his early life and was a member of Seventh Day Adventist Church, Parkersburg. Surviving are his wife of 10 years, Leona Gilcrest Spencer; one son, William Ron Spencer of Spartanburg, S.C.; two daughters, Sandra L. Antony of Washington, Va., and Linda R. Spencer of Rockland County, N.Y.; two grandchildren; and two sisters, Ruby Williams of Parkersburg and Virginia DeLille of Fernandina Beach, Fla. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Cleo Mitchell Spencer, in 1984; two brothers, George Spencer and Everett Spencer; and four sisters, Macie Hickman, Tracie DeLille, Fanny Moore and Gladys Nesselrode. Services were held at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Parkersburg. Burial was in Clover Ridge cemetery, near Spencer, with Elder Randell Murphy and Elder David Ripley officiating.

STARCHER, CECIL E.

Cecil E. Starcher, 82, passed away suddenly on Monday, April 24, 1995. He was born in West Virginia and lived most of his life in Akron, retiring from B.F. Goodrich Tire and Rubber Co. He was an Army veteran of WWII and was a member of Akron Baptist Temple. Surviving are his sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Connie of Akron, Ohio, and Roger and Darlene of Charlotte, N.C.; grandchildren, Tammy, Dawn, Amy, Josh and Kathryn; brothers, Leon of Akron and Cliff of West Virginia; sister, Minnie Zinn of West Virginia; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn "Berdine"; three sisters; and two brothers. Services were held at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, Akron, Ohio, with Rev. William D. Lee officiating. Burial was in Hillside Memorial Park.

STARCHER, DENNIS

Dennis Starcher, 86, of Parkersburg, died Thursday, Feb. 2, 1995, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Marshall and Margaret Blake Starcher. He attended Calhoun County schools. He had been a farmer and was retired from Calhoun General Hospital where he was an orderly. He attended 14th Avenue Gospel Mission. Surviving are his wife, Freeda Roberts Starcher; one daughter, Barbara Wagoner of the home; and three sisters, Elah Whisman and Eulah Kerby, both of Mt. Zion, and Lova Slider of Millstone. He was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters. Services were held at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. Danny Jeffrey officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memory Gardens.

STARCHER, GLEN E.

Glen E. Starcher, 71, of Parkersburg, died Saturday, Sept. 16, 1995, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late William and Lelah Greathouse Starcher. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a retired minister. Surviving are his wife, Garnet Starcher; three sons, Alfred Starcher of Grantsville, Richard Starcher and Toney Starcher, both of Orma; five daughters, Linda Starcher of Cumberland, Md., Carolyn Sue Carpenter of Arnoldsburg, Virginia Marie Starcher and Freda King, both of Grantsville, and Norma Starcher of Orma; and 19 grandchildren. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Pastor Mike Kirby officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olive cemetery, near Mt. Zion.

STARCHER, HAZEL I.

Hazel I. Starcher, 60, of Spencer, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 1995, at Roane General Hospital. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Neil and Grace Sampson Starcher. She was a cook at Gordon Memorial Hospital, Spencer, and was a homemaker. Surviving are two daughters, Jeannette Reed and Debra Rhodes, both of Spencer; two sons, Paul Starcher and David Starcher, both of Spencer; two sisters, Rhoda Griffith and Ora Bowley, both of Spencer; and nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by six brothers and six sisters. Services were held at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Larry Haught officiating. Burial was in Eventide cemetery, Spencer.

STARCHER, JESSIE S.

Jessie S. Starcher, 77, of Worthington Manor Nursing Home, Parkersburg, died Monday, Nov. 13, 1995, at the center. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Jehu and Ellen Jarvis Starcher. She was a homemaker and a member of Salvation Army Church. Surviving are three sons, Carl Crites of Mineral Wells, Rodney Crites and Clellen Starcher, both of Parkersburg; five daughters, Emma Amos and Pam Lovell, both of Parkersburg, Cheryl Stone of New York, Garnet Leone of Baltimore, Md., and Drema Starkey of Mineral Wells; one brother, Harlan Starcher of Lubeck; 15 grandchildren, six great- grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters. Services were scheduled Wednesday, 1 p.m., at Franklin Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. Joseph C. Matthewson officiating, and burial in Sunset Memory Gardens.
