STARKEY, VEDA DELL

Veda Dell Starkey, 84, of Grantsville, died Tuesday, April 4, 1995, at her son's residence in Princeton after an extended illness. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late A. T. and Ellen Metz Yoak. She was a homemaker, and a member of the Fairview United Methodist Church, Big Bend. Surviving are two sons, Fred Starkey of Berea, Ohio, and Joe Starkey of Princeton; one brother, Loyall Yoak of Ravenswood; one sister, Frances Davis of Grantsville; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon Starkey, in 1993; one son, Eddie Starkey, in 1976; eight brothers; and three sisters. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville. Burial was in Pleasant Hill cemetery.

STEVENS, CANDAS S.

Candas S. Stevens, 44, of Sand Fork, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 1995, at home following an extended illness. She was born at Gilmer Station, a daughter of Winona Love Sumpter of Sand Fork and the late Kenneth Sumpter. She was an employee of West Virginia Dept. of Highways, former correspondent for The Glenville Democrat/Pathfinder, and a 1968 graduate of Sand Fork High School. Surviving are her husband, Robert P. Stevens, son of the late Russell and Myrla Stevens, formerly of Pine Creek; a stepson, Russell Paul Stevens of Parkersburg; two brothers, Howard K. Sumpter of Sand Fork and Butch Sumpter of Rochester, N.Y.; and three nephews. Services were held at Stockert-Gibson Funeral Home, Flatwoods, with Rev. Kenny Fisher officiating. Burial was in Big Run cemetery, Napier.

STIRMAN, SUSAN AND R. LAYNE

Susan Stirman, 43, and R. Layne Stirman, 12, both of Raleigh, N.C., died Sunday, Nov. 19, 1995, in a plane crash at Lake Erie. Susan Stirman was born in Elizabeth. She graduated from Monterey High School and attended Texas Tech University. She received a bachelor's degree in nursing from Texas Woman's University. She was a member of St. Mark's Methodist Church, Raleigh, and worked for Lubbock Anesthesiology Associates. Her survivors include her mother, Van Boling of Lubbock; a brother, John L. Boling of Lubbock; and a sister, Margaret Tyler-Dennis of Shallowater, Texas (wife of Don Dennis, formerly of Grantsville). She was preceded in death by her father, Dr. John Boling, a former doctor in Grantsville. Layne Stirman was born in Raleigh. He was a sixth grader at Ravenscroft School, Raleigh. He enjoyed soccer, tennis, swimming and water skiing, and was active in Boy Scouts. He was a member of St. Mark's Methodist Church, Raleigh. His survivors include his father, Dr. Jerry Stirman, Jr., of Raleigh; a stepbrother, Greg Stirman of Boulder, Colo.; and maternal grandparents, Mary Stirman of Dallas and Dr. Jerry Stirman, Sr., of Santa Fe, N.M. Services were held at Gloria Del Lutheran Church, Lubbock, with Rev. Bob Bardy, pastor, officiating.

STRIMPLE, EDWARD E.

Edward E. Strimple, 75, of Champion, Ohio, died Friday, Dec. 2, 1994, in St. Joseph Riverside Hospital. He was born in Grantsville, a son of Nelson and Ruby Knotts Strimple. He retired in 1984 as a millwright in the coke plant at LTV Steel, where he had worked for 30 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, the former Ruth Tindall; five sons, Nelson C. of Strongsville, Ohio; Edward E. of Cascade, Barry L. and James B., both of Champion, and Robert A. of Rock Hill, S. C.; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was a nephew of R. J. Knotts, Jr., of Stumptown. He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Sophia Lachowski, in 1975. Services were held at McCardell-White Funeral Home.

STULL, ROSA

Rosa Stull, 87, of Grantsville, died Wednesday, Mar. 8, 1995, at Americare of Glenville after an extended illness. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late I. T. and Ollie Bush Wright. She was a homemaker, and a member of Grace Independent Baptist Church, Grantsville. Surviving are one daughter, Virgie Johnson of Camden, Tenn.; three sons, Roger Stull of Barberton, Ohio, Rondal "Elick" Stull of Grantsville and Dean Stull of Massillon, Ohio; one sister, Nellie Dobbins of Akron; one brother, Rev. James Wright of Pennsboro; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great- grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Stull, in 1978; one son, Gayle Wright; and one brother, Robert Wright. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Robert Nicholas officiating. Burial was in Wright cemetery, near Grantsville.

STUMP, CARL M.

Carl M. Stump, 52, of Parkersburg, died Monday, May 1, 1995, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Parkersburg, after a brief illness. He was born in Grantsville, a son of the late Alfred B. and Almedia Kerby Stump. He was a supervisor in the Delrin Division of E.I. DuPont's Washington Works for 31 years, and coached Little League at Godbey Field. He was an avid golfer and hunter, past president of the South Parkersburg Jaycees, and was a member of Grantsville Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife of 32 years, Rose Lee Hardman Stump; two daughters, Rita Marie Lowers of Parkersburg and Vicki Lynn Stump of the home; one son, Michael W. "Mick" Stump of Parkersburg; one grandson; three brothers, Bernard Stump of Pineville, Harold Lee Stump of San Jose, Calif., and Alfred Stump, Jr., of Parkersburg; one sister, Joan Stump of Grantsville; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Kenneth Stump; two granddaughters; and three grandsons. Services will be held Thursday, 10:30 a.m., at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. John F. Koerner officiating, and burial in Collins Family cemetery, Stumptown. Visitation was scheduled from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Wednesday.

STUMP, GLADIE

Gladie Stump, 93, of Grantsville, died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 1994, at Nicholas County Health Care Center, Richwood, after an extended illness. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Clayton and Arminta C. Chapman Stump. She was a retired postmaster, and was employed by Calhoun General Hospital. She was a member of Enon Baptist Church, near Grantsville. Surviving are one sister, Mary M. Stump of Grantsville; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Buena Roberts and Vista Lovell; and two brothers, Willard Stump and John H. Stump. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Kenneth Heiney officiating. Burial was in Clayton Stump cemetery, near Grantsville.

STUMP, LENNA G.

Lenna G. Stump, 100, of Stumptown, died Tuesday, April 25, 1995, at Nicholas County Health Care, Richwood, after an extended illness. She was born in Gilmer County, a daughter of the late William F. and Rachel E. Witte Gherke. She was a former merchant, farmer and homemaker. She was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, Stumptown. Surviving are two daughters, Jearl Koontz Turner of Charleston and Wanda Vannoy of Virginia Beach, Va.; nine grandchildren; 12 great- grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Page Stump; and one son, Earl Page Stump. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. J. Herbert Smith officiating. Burial was in Collins Community cemetery, Stumptown.

STUMP, MINTOR B.

Mintor Baxter Stump, 76, of Sand Ridge, was dead on arrival, Sunday, Feb. 12, 1995, at Roane General Hospital, after a sudden illness. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Warder E. and Ethel Poling Stump. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II and was retired from the gas pipeline construction business. He was a former employee of Hardman's and Bartlett Concrete Co., both of Spencer. He was a member of Eureka Lodge #40, AF&AM, Grantsville and Charleston Scottish Rite Bodies, and Albert's Chapel United Methodist Church, Sand Ridge. Surviving are his wife, Estellina Danks Stump; one son, Kenman Stump of Washington Court House, Ohio; two sisters, Eulanee Hathaway and Edith Smith, both of Grantsville; two grandsons, Jack Stump and Gregory Stump, both of Washington Court House; and three great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Leone Keller; and three brothers, Edwin Stump, Dallas Stump and Warder E. Stump, Jr. Services were scheduled Wednesday, 2 p.m., at Albert's Chapel U. M. Church, with Rev. Glendon McKee officiating, and burial in the church cemetery.

TANNER, HELEN B.

Helen Brown Tanner, 61, of Parkersburg, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 1995, at her residence. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Sherman and Zella Weekley Brown. She was a homemaker. Surviving are her husband, Spencer E. Tanner of Parkersburg; one daughter, Vicki M. Karibinus of Charlottesville, Va.; one son, Greg Tanner of Belpre, Ohio; one sister, Sharon Nesbitt of Little Hocking, Ohio; two brothers, James Brown of Sidney, Ohio, and Gerald Brown of Eastover, S.C.; and two grandchildren, Jeremy and Kelley Tanner. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Charley and Jessie Siers Weekley, and paternal grandparents, Albert and Artie Suttle Brown. Services were held at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Evangelist Charlene Spaur officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olivet cemetery, Parkersburg.

TAYLOR, DENZIL C.

Denzil C. Taylor, 56, of Walker, died Friday, June 9, 1995, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, after a brief illness. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of Leona Wagoner Taylor of Newark and the late Herbert Howard Taylor. He was a 1957 graduate of East Cleveland High School and retired in 1986 as a die forman at O. Ames with 17 years of service. He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 2307, and attended Newark House of Prayer. He was an avid golfer and participated in area bowling leagues for many years. He enjoyed raising and caring for horses and was an avid outdoorsman. Surviving in addition to his mother are two sons, Mitchell Lee Taylor of Newark and Gregory Charles Taylor of Parkersburg; one sister, Virginia Forren of Newark; one grandson, Zachary Lee Taylor of Newark; one granddaughter, Chasity Ann Taylor of Newark; five nephews; and one niece. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Pamela Sue Taylor, in 1968. Services were held at Spruce Hollow Community Church, Big Bend, with Rev. Raymond D. Ray officiating. Burial was in Taylor cemetery, Calhoun County.

THOMAS, BEVAGENE

Bevagene Thomas, 59, of Barberton, Ohio, died Friday, Mar. 3, 1995, at Barberton Citizens Hospital after an extended illness. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of Rosie Hicks of Arnoldsburg, and the late Earl Hicks. Surviving in addition to her mother are her husband, William R. Thomas; three sons, William E. Thomas and Roger L. Thomas, both of Akron, Ohio, and Jerry D. Thomas of North Canton, Ohio; a daughter, Rita Glenn of Akron; three brothers, Dayton Hicks of Orma, Darius Hicks of Sand Ridge and James Hicks of Mt. Zion; three sisters, Virginia Poling of Millstone, Mary Groves of Stumptown and Leota Hicks of Arnoldsburg; and 12 grandchildren. Services were scheduled for Wednesday, 1 p.m., at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Charles Franklin officiating, and burial in Bailey cemetery, near Minnora.

THOMPSON, DAVID II

David Keith "Little Keith" Thompson II, 4, of Arnoldsburg, drowned Sunday, Aug. 20, 1995, at his home. He was born in Akron, a son of David Keith and Nannette Williams Thompson, both of Arnoldsburg. Surviving in addition to his parents are two sisters, Alicia Thompson and Elizabeth Thompson, both of the home; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Sherwin Williams of Edinburg, Ohio; maternal grandmother, Nancy Osbourn of Hartville, Ohio; and paternal grandparents, David and Nancy Foote of Boston. Services were scheduled Wednesday, 1 p.m., at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with burial in Orma cemetery. Visitation scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday.
